In nature, methylmercury (MeHg) is primarily generated through microbial metabolism, and the ability of bacteria to methylate Hg(II) depends on both bacterial properties and environmental factors. It is widely known that, as a metabolic analog, molybdate can inhibit the sulfate reduction process and affect the growth and methylation of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). However, after it enters the cell, molybdate can be involved in various intracellular metabolic pathways as a molybdenum cofactor; whether fluctuations in its concentration affect the growth and methylation of aerobic mercury methylating strains remains unknown. To address this gap, aerobic γ-Proteobacteria strains Raoultella terrigena TGRB3 (B3) and Pseudomonas putida TGRB4 (B4), as well as an obligate anaerobic δ-Proteobacteria strain of the SRB Desulfomicrobium escambiense CGMCC 1.3481 (DE), were used as experimental strains. The growth and methylation ability of each strain were analyzed under conditions of 500 ng·L−1 Hg(II), 0 and 21% of oxygen, and 0, 0.25, 0.50, and 1 mM of MoO42−. In addition, in order to explore the metabolic specificity of aerobic strains, transcriptomic data of the facultative mercury-methylated strain B3 were further analyzed in an aerobic mercuric environment. The results indicated that: (a) molybdate significantly inhibited the growth of DE, while B3 and B4 exhibited normal growth. (b) Under anaerobic conditions, in DE, the MeHg content decreased significantly with increasing molybdate concentration, while in B3, MeHg production was unaffected. Furthermore, under aerobic conditions, the MeHg productions of B3 and B4 were not influenced by the molybdate concentration. (c) The transcriptomic analysis showed several genes that were annotated as members of the molybdenum oxidoreductase family of B3 and that exhibited significant differential expression. These findings suggest that the differential expression of molybdenum-binding proteins might be related to their involvement in energy metabolism pathways that utilize nitrate and dimethyl sulfoxide as electron acceptors. Aerobic bacteria, such as B3 and B4, might possess distinct Hg(II) biotransformation pathways from anaerobic SRB, rendering their growth and biomethylation abilities unaffected by molybdate.

Mercury accumulation in alpine permafrost vegetation via root uptake increases with altitude relative to foliage uptake from the atmosphere, according to analyses of mercury concentrations and isotopic signatures in grass and soil profiles in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The plant microbiota can affect plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soil. Although most well-known mercury (Hg) methylators are observed in the soil, it remains unclear how rice rhizosphere assemblages alter MeHg production. Here, we used network analyses of microbial diversity to identify bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere (RS) and root bacterial networks during rice development at Hg gradients. Hg gradients greatly impacted the niche-sharing of taxa significantly relating to MeHg/THg, while plant development had little effect. In RS networks, Hg gradients increased the proportion of MeHg-related nodes in total nodes from 37.88% to 45.76%, but plant development enhanced from 48.59% to 50.41%. The module hub and connector in RS networks included taxa positively (Nitrososphaeracea, Vicinamibacteraceae and Oxalobacteraceae) and negatively (Gracilibacteraceae) correlating with MeHg/THg at the blooming stage. In BS networks, Deinococcaceae and Paludibacteraceae were positively related to MeHg/THg, and constituted the connector at the reviving stage and the module hub at the blooming stage. Soil with an Hg concentration of 30 mg kg−1 increased the complexity and connectivity of root microbial networks, although microbial community structure in roots was less affected by Hg gradients and plant development. As most frequent connector in root microbial networks, Desulfovibrionaceae did not significantly correlate with MeHg/THg, but was likely to play an important role in the response to Hg stress.

Hydrological management of the Three Gorges Dam has resulted in the interception of heavy metals in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). However, the exposure to heavy metals and health risks among local residents remained poorly understood. Here we collected 208 biomarker samples (hair) and 20 food species from typical regions in the TGR to assess the exposure levels of three toxic metals (Cr, Pb and As) in residents of the TGR, and subsequently investigated their health risk via dietary intake. Results indicated that hair Cr and As levels were below the reference value for normal people and threshold of skin lesions, respectively, whereas about 22% hair Pb exceeded the reference for clinical medicine, indicating a potential Pb exposure of local residents. Smoking habit and fish consumption were found to be predictors for hair Pb. In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals in all investigated food samples were below the limits of contaminants in food in China, except for Pb in the sweet potato and fish. The estimated daily intake of metals (DIMs) revealed that the intakes of Cr and As from studied food were under the recommended thresholds of Cr and As. However, the intake of Pb via diet exceeded the limit of the prevalence of chronic kidney disease and closed to the threshold for cardiovascular, which was probably associated with the high Pb concentrations of fish and sweet potato. Overall, residents around the TGR were at low exposure to Cr and As, but Pb exposure may need more attention.

It is of great importance to elucidate the mechanism of mercury (Hg) migration in the forest litterfall so as to clearly understand global Hg deposition. However, it is still unclear for the migration and transformation of Hg in different forest litters during long-term decomposition. Therefore, the dynamics of total Hg (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), carbon, nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen in the litterfall of the evergreen broadleaf (EB) and mixed broadleaf-conifer (MBC) forests, southwest China were investigated, aiming to understand the migration characteristics of Hg in the two-year decomposing litterfall. Results showed that carbon decreased, while nitrogen accumulated slightly in the process of litterfall decomposition. THg levels in the second year of the EB and MBC forests decreased by 16.9% and 11.3%, while MeHg levels reduced by 141.4% and 210.7% respectively comparing with those in the first year. The total percentage of hydrochloric acid-soluble mercury (Hg-h) and water-soluble mercury (Hg-w) had a significant impact on the migration of THg and MeHg in the two forest stands. The C/N ratio in the EB forest bore a positive correlation with THg and MeHg levels, whereas that in the MBC forest was adverse. Besides, microbial biomass C and N were positively related with THg and MeHg levels in both the EB and MBC forests. It is proposed that THg and MeHg accumulation in the second year drastically decreased probably due to finite nutritional conditions, which implies that Hg accumulation risks alleviate with degradation time.

Limited information is available about the bio-methylation of inorganic mercury (iHg) under aerobic conditions. In this study, two γ-proteobacteria strains (P. fluorescens TGR-B2 and P. putida TGR-B4) were obtained from the soil of The Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), demonstrating effective aerobic transformation capacities of iHg into methylmercury (MeHg). Based on periodical changes in soil oxygen content of the TGR, a culture system was established, in which 300 ng Hg (II) L–1 and O2 were set at 7%, 14%, and 21%, respectively. Results indicated that the two strains differed significantly in bacterial growth rate and MeHg production. The kinetic model of MeHg showed typical characteristics of a “two-staged” process: The first stage was dominated by bio-methylation, which was shown by increasing of net MeHg content. Moreover, the second stage was dominated by bio-demethylation, which decreased net MeHg content. Thus, we hypothesized that the mechanism of aerobic bacterial iHg bio-methylation: (1) should inefficiency compared to anaerobic bacteria i.e.SRB, which were regulated by hgcA/B gene clusters, (2) might be regarded as a passive stress response and depended on the bacterial iHg intoxication threshold and MeHg tolerance threshold.

The adjacent agricultural watershed is a vital component of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR); however, it is affected by serious soil erosion. Assessing soil erosion dynamics in such watersheds is useful for identifying its causes and tendencies to develop, in turn providing scientific information for soil and water conservation at the regional scale. In the present study, the spatial and temporal patterns of soil erosion of a small agricultural watershed in central TGRR were investigated from 2002 to 2014 using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model, combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The trends and processes of the overall soil erosion intensity were analyzed using spatial overlay analysis and the Markov transition matrix model, respectively. The spatial distribution of soil erosion rates within this watershed was relatively consistent during the study period. Erosion intensity was moderate, with a mean soil loss of 35.1 t·ha−1·year−1. Precipitation was a dominant factor influencing the intensity of soil erosion. Moreover, most erosion intensities shifted closely to middle grades from 2002 to 2008, and declined from 2008 to 2014, indicating that soil erosion in the Wangjiagou watershed has recently decreased. These results suggest that recently implemented integrated soil management practices were responsible for the recently observed erosion patterns.

In order to reveal the mercury (Hg) emission and exchange characteristics at the soil–air interface under different vegetation cover types, the evergreen broad-leaf forest, shrub forest, grass, and bare lands of Simian Mountain National Nature Reserve were selected as the sampling sites. The gaseous elementary mercury (GEM) fluxes at the soil–air interface under the four vegetation covers were continuously monitored for two years, and the effect of temperature and solar radiation on GEM fluxes were also investigated. Results showed that the GEM fluxes at the soil–air interface under different vegetation cover types had significant difference (p < 0.05). The bare land had the maximum GEM flux (15.32 ± 10.44 ng·m−2·h−1), followed by grass land (14.73 ± 18.84 ng·m−2·h−1), and shrub forest (12.83 ± 10.22 ng·m−2·h−1), and the evergreen broad-leaf forest had the lowest value (11.23 ± 11.13 ng·m−2·h−1). The GEM fluxes at the soil–air interface under different vegetation cover types showed similar regularity in seasonal variation, which mean that the GEM fluxes in summer were higher than that in winter. In addition, the GEM fluxes at the soil–air interface under the four vegetation covers in Mt. Simian had obvious diurnal variations.

Treatment of refractory organic dyeing wastewater is a serious issue in the chemical industry and environmental protection. ZnO nanomaterials have a good potential for dyes removal from wastewater. To optimize the synthetic technology for ZnO and improve the photocatalytic activity for hazardous organic matters, an improved route of ZnO were proposed via microwave-assisted co-precipitation method using polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) as a surfactant. The facile and moderate synthesis conditions of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were confirmed owing to lower reaction temperature (35°C) and quick reaction time (5 min microwave irradiation). The as-prepared ZnO NPs exhibited excellent photocatalytic degradation performance for refractory dyes crystal violet (CV) and Congo red (CR) in terms of rapid degradation rate, high degradation efficiency and broad pH range. In summary, the study is very useful for optimizing the synthetic conditions for the ZnO NPs and enhancing the potential applications in photocatalytic degradation for refractory organic pollutants. Rice paddy plantation is the dominant agricultural land use throughout Asia. Rice paddy fields have been identified as important sites for methylmercury (MeHg) production in the terrestrial ecosystem and a primary pathway of MeHg exposure to humans in mercury (Hg) mining areas. We compared the source and distribution of Hg species in different compartments of the rice paddy during a complete ricegrowing season at two different typical Hg-contaminated mining sites in Guizhou province, China: an abandoned site with a high Hg concentration in soil but a low concentration in the atmosphere and a current-day artisanal site with a low concentration in soil but a high concentration in the atmosphere. Our results showed that the flux of new Hg to the ecosystem from irrigation and atmospheric deposition was insignificant relative to the pool of old Hg in soil; the dominant source of MeHg to paddy soil is in situ methylation of inorganic Hg (IHg). Elevated MeHg concentrations and the high proportion of Hg as MeHg in paddy water and the surface soil layer at the artisanal site demonstrated active Hg methylation at this site only. We propose that the in situ production of MeHg in paddy water and surface soil is dependent on elevated Hg in the atmosphere and the consequential deposition of new Hg into a low-pH anoxic geochemical system. The absence of depth-dependent variability in the MeHg concentration in soil cores collected from the abandoned Hg mining site, consistent with the low concentration of Hg in the atmosphere and high pH of the paddy water and irrigation water, suggested that net production of MeHg at this site was limited. A systematic survey of heavy metals and As concentrations in vegetables and soil in Chongqing was carried out to assess their potential health risks to local people. The results indicated that the Cr, Cd, Pb and As levels in some vegetables exceeded the Chinese safety standard of pollutants in food. The total carcinogenic risks of the heavy metals and As in 10 kinds of vegetables were all over the standard limits provided by USEPA and ICRP. Therefore, great attention should be paid to the issues of the heavy metals and As pollution in vegetables and the corresponding soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photodegradation (PD) of methylmercury (MMHg) is a key process of mercury (Hg) cycling in water systems, maintaining MMHg at a low level in water systems. However, we possess little knowledge of this important process in the Jialing River of Chongqing, China. In situ incubation experiments were thus performed to measure temporal patterns and influencing factors of MMHg PD in this river. The results showed that MMHg underwent a net demethylation process under solar radiation in the water column, which predominantly occurred in surface waters. For surface water, the highest PD rate constants were observed in spring (12 × 10−3 ± 1.5 × 10−3 m²/E), followed by summer (9.0 × 10−3 ± 1.2 × 10−3 m²/E), autumn (1.4 × 10−3 ± 0.12 × 10−3 m²/E), and winter (0.78 × 10−3 ± 0.11 × 10−3 m²/E). UV-A radiation (320-400 nm), UV-B radiation (280-320 nm), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm) accounted for 43%-64%, 14%-31%, and 16%-45% of MMHg PD, respectively. PD rate constants varied substantially with the treatments that filtered the river water and amended it with chemicals (i.e., Cl−, NO−3, dissolved organic matter (DOM), Fe(III)), which reveals that suspended particulate matter and water components are important factors in affecting the PD process. For the entire water column, the PD rate constant determined for each wavelength range decreased rapidly with water depth. UV-A, UV-B, and PAR contributed 27%-46%, 6.2%-12%, and 42%-65% to the PD process, respectively. PD flux was estimated to be 4.7 μg/(m²·year) in the study site.
