1. Anisotropic Ion Conducting Particulate Composites for Bioelectronics

Abstract

Abstract Acquisition, processing, and manipulation of biological signals require transistor circuits capable of ion to electron conversion. However, use of this class of transistors in integrated sensors or circuits is limited due to difficulty in patterning biocompatible electrolytes for independent operation of transistors. It is hypothesized that it would be possible to eliminate the need for electrolyte patterning by enabling directional ion conduction as a property of the material serving as electrolyte. Here, the anisotropic ion conductor (AIC) is developed as a soft, biocompatible composite material comprised of ion‐conducting particles and an insulating polymer. AIC displays strongly anisotropic ion conduction with vertical conduction comparable to isotropic electrolytes over extended time periods. AIC allows effective hydration of conducting polymers to establish volumetric capacitance, which is critical for the operation of electrochemical transistors. AIC enables dense patterning of transistors with minimal leakage using simple solution‐based deposition techniques. Lastly, AIC can be utilized as a dry, anisotropic interface with human skin that is capable of non‐invasive acquisition of individual motor action potentials. The properties of AIC position it to enable implementation of a wide range of large‐scale organic bioelectronics and enhance their translation to human health applications.

Individuals with multimorbidity typically present with complex needs and show significant changes in their functional health and quality of life. Multimorbidity in the aging population is well recognized, but there has been limited research on ways to manage the problem effectively. More recent studies have demonstrated a high prevalence of multimorbidity in the younger demographics aged under 65 years. There is a definite need to develop models of care that can manage these individuals effectively and mitigate the impact of illness on individuals and the financial burden to the health care system. An integrated model of care has been developed and implemented in a facility in Nova Scotia that routinely treats individuals with multiple chronic conditions. This care model is designed to address the specific needs of this complex patient population, with integrated and coordinated care modules that meet the needs of the person versus the disease. Abstract

Soft robotics presents innovative solutions across different scales. The flexibility and mechanical characteristics of soft robots make them particularly appealing for wearable and implantable applications. The scale and level of invasiveness required for soft robots depend on the extent of human interaction. This review provides a comprehensive overview of wearable and implantable soft robots, including applications in rehabilitation, assistance, organ simulation, surgical tools, and therapy. We discuss challenges such as the complexity of fabrication processes, the integration of responsive materials, and the need for robust control strategies, while focusing on advances in materials, actuation and sensing mechanisms, and fabrication techniques. Abstract

Since 2002, National Outcomes and Casemix Collection of clinician‐rated and consumer‐rated outcome measures has become part of routine care within Australian clinical mental health services, aiming to ensure that services understand, improve and are accountable for effectiveness of treatment and care provision. Consumer‐rated outcome measures, implemented well, support basic human rights of consumers to be asked, heard and included equally in their own care. However, their use has lagged due to clinician inertia, uncertainty about their value to clinical care, assumptions about consumers' capacity to complete the measures and organisational cultural issues that have hampered more holistic assessment, consumer inclusion and care collaboration. Much is known about negative, largely tokenistic use of such measures, poor uptake and dominance of clinical approaches to measurement that privilege clinical expertise; however, little is known about consumers' positive experiences of using consumer‐rated measures, Therefore, our aims were as follows: to seek the views and experiences of mental health consumers of using consumer‐rated measures in their encounters with clinicians; to understand better whether there were benefits (and if so what) of consumer‐rated measures being used in routine mental health practice; to understand how feedback on the use of consumer‐rated measures can inform training for mental health staff; and to promote their wider use within mental health services. In‐depth interviews conducted with 10 Australian mental health consumers used interview questions co‐designed with lived experience and clinical advocates. Descriptive thematic analyses produced four themes emphasising consumers' preferences for completing the measures, the importance of explaining their purpose, how the process validated their feelings and was an opportunity for self‐reflection, sense‐making, trust‐building, and transparency in the encounter and empowerment. 13. The hermeneutics and translation stylistics of the septuagintal books of Haggai and Malachi

Abstract

In Chapter 1 I introduce the study and explain that virtually all of the post major treatments of the LXX of the Minor Prophets were essentially atomistic in nature and made no effort to treat the Greek text as a coherent, unified literary and theological work with its own independent integrity. I argue that the nature of the LXX of these books and the function of the LXX in history both constitute compelling reasons to treat the text as something other than a more or less defective witness toward a reconstructed Hebrew Voriage which might be useful in the text-criticism of the Hebrew Old Testament. In Chapter 2 I undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the Kethib/Dere variants, the Sebirin, the Tiggune Sopherim and the variants attested directly or indirectly in the manuscripts discovered in the Dead Sea region as these might bear upon the Hebrew text of the Minor Prophets. I conclude that there is no evidence of systematic conformity to a proto-septuagintal text-type and that the textual evidence suggests a stream-like history with a constant intermixing of texts. In Chapters 3 and 4 I provide a detailed textual comentary of Haggai and Malachi. In this commentary, I typically address the relation of the LXX's Vorlage to the MT, the meaning of the Vorlage, the meaning of the MT, the translator's understanding of the meaning of his Vorlage, the reasons the translator translated as he did and the significance of his Greek language without any concern for the motives or confusion which might be behind the Greek. In Chapter 5 I conclude the study with an argument that the LXX of the Minor Prophets illustrates that an ancient translation could be both highly literal and yet reflect a high degree of hermeneutical intentionality bg the translator.

29. Considering EU External Relations after Brexit: Introduction

Abstract

This special issue of Europe and the World: A law review consists of selected articles that were presented at a workshop on External Relations in the post-Brexit EU, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in October 2018. The workshop was generously funded by the James Madison Charitable Trust and the New Professors Fund of the University of Strathclyde. The purpose of the workshop was to consider the multifaceted dimensions of Brexit on the European Union’s external relations, and in particular to consider how interdisciplinary perspectives can enrich our understanding of the law underpinning the subject. This includes the EU’s externally facing institutional frameworks; law and policy on foreign, security and defence policies; trade and the Common Commercial Policy; and bilateral agreements with third countries or regions. The workshop was held around the mid-point in time from the referendum of June 2016 until the eventual departure of the UK on 31 January 2020 (although the final departuredate and exit arrangements were unknown at the time). As such, the workshop contributors based their analyses on what the future impact of Brexit might be. Drawing on the extensive scholarship on EU external relations that has blossomed over previous decades, the authors of this special issue have been able to comprehensively analyse what future EU external relations might look like.

Abstract

Background Despite a modest association between tobacco smoking and breast cancer risk reported by recent epidemiological studies, it is still equivocal whether smoking is causally related to breast cancer risk. Methods We applied Mendelian randomisation (MR) to evaluate a potential causal effect of cigarette smoking on breast cancer risk. Both individual-level data as well as summary statistics for 164 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) reported in genome-wide association studies of lifetime smoking index (LSI) or cigarette per day (CPD) were used to obtain MR effect estimates. Data from 108,420 invasive breast cancer cases and 87,681 controls were used for the LSI analysis and for the CPD analysis conducted among ever-smokers from 26,147 cancer cases and 26,072 controls. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to address pleiotropy. Results Genetically predicted LSI was associated with increased breast cancer risk (OR 1.18 per SD, 95% CI: 1.07–1.30, P = 0.11 × 10–2), but there was no evidence of association for genetically predicted CPD (OR 1.02, 95% CI: 0.78–1.19, P = 0.85). The sensitivity analyses yielded similar results and showed no strong evidence of pleiotropic effect. Conclusion Our MR study provides supportive evidence for a potential causal association with breast cancer risk for lifetime smoking exposure but not cigarettes per day among smokers.

42. Decision‐making by the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee

Abstract

Background\ud \ud This study explored the evidence base for recommendations by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee, the only NICE committee not to consider cost. The four potential recommendations are: Standard Arrangements (can be performed as routine practice in the NHS); Special Arrangements (can be done under certain conditions); Research Only; and Do Not Do.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud Quantitative content analysis of data extracted from all published Interventional Procedure Guidance (IPG) for 2003–2018 (n = 496) was undertaken. All data were extracted independently by two researchers; disagreements were clarified by consensus. Data were tabulated, descriptive statistics produced, and regression analyses performed.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud The proportion of IPGs by recommendation was: 50·0 per cent Standard Arrangements; 37·2 per cent Special Arrangements; 11·1 per cent Research Only; and 1·6 per cent Do Not Do. There was a clear trend over time: the proportion of recommendations for Standard Arrangements decreased, whereas the evidence threshold increased. Adjusted mean numbers of patients in the evidence base by recommendation type were: Standard, 4867; Special, 709; Research Only, 386. Regression analyses confirmed that the year of recommendation, numbers of patients and levels of evidence all affected the likely recommendation.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusion\ud \ud This study suggests that the likelihood of achieving the most positive recommendation (Standard Arrangements) is decreasing, and that this is most likely due to evidential requirements becoming more demanding. These findings are distinct from those reported for other NICE committees, for which the cost and statistical superiority of new therapies are among the drivers of recommendations.

Abstract

Acquisition, processing, and manipulation of biological signals require transistor circuits capable of ion to electron conversion. However, use of this class of transistors in integrated sensors or circuits is limited due to difficulty in patterning biocompatible electrolytes for independent operation of transistors. It is hypothesized that it would be possible to eliminate the need for electrolyte patterning by enabling directional ion conduction as a property of the material serving as electrolyte. Here, the anisotropic ion conductor (AIC) is developed as a soft, biocompatible composite material comprised of ion‐conducting particles and an insulating polymer. AIC displays strongly anisotropic ion conduction with vertical conduction comparable to isotropic electrolytes over extended time periods. AIC allows effective hydration of conducting polymers to establish volumetric capacitance, which is critical for the operation of electrochemical transistors. AIC enables dense patterning of transistors with minimal leakage using simple solution‐based deposition techniques. Lastly, AIC can be utilized as a dry, anisotropic interface with human skin that is capable of non‐invasive acquisition of individual motor action potentials. The properties of AIC position it to enable implementation of a wide range of large‐scale organic bioelectronics and enhance their translation to human health applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
