The popularity and demand for high-quality date palm fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.) have been growing, and their quality largely depends on the type of handling, storage, and processing methods. The current methods of geometric evaluation and classification of date palm fruits are characterised by high labour intensity and are usually performed mechanically, which may cause additional damage and reduce the quality and value of the product. Therefore, non-contact methods are being sought based on image analysis, with digital solutions controlling the evaluation and classification processes. The main objective of this paper is to develop an automatic classification model for varieties of date palm fruits using a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on two fundamental criteria, i.e., colour difference and evaluation of geometric parameters of dates. A CNN with a fixed architecture was built, marked as DateNET, consisting of a system of five alternating Conv2D, MaxPooling2D, and Dropout classes. The validation accuracy of the model presented in this study depended on the selection of classification criteria. It was 85.24% for fruit colour-based classification and 87.62% for the geometric parameters only; however, it increased considerably to 93.41% when both the colour and geometry of dates were considered. Dual use of water for fish and crop production could be a promising approach to improve irrigation under arid conditions. A watercress pot study was carried out to assess the effects of irrigation by catfish and tilapia aquaculture water on the sandy soil properties as well as the growth parameters of watercress with various combinations of artificial NPK fertilizers at El-Minia Governorate of Egypt (28°18′16″ N latitude and 30°34′38″ E longitude). Catfish aquaculture water had the greatest phytoplankton abundance at 83,762 units (×104/L), while the minimum number of phytoplankton existed in tilapia aquaculture water, recorded at 14,873 units (×104/L). There were significant average changes that varied from 120 to 237 (×104 cfu/mL−1) in total bacterial counts in tilapia and catfish waters. Watercress growth quality parameters closely paralleled at all NPK application rates, indicating that the highest quality plants were produced in pots receiving 25% of the recommended levels and irrigated with catfish aquaculture water. Nitrate concentrations of watercress plants were determined under pollution levels established by the European Commission for leafy and tuber vegetables. In conclusion, the use of microbial and phytoplankton-rich aquaculture water to irrigate vegetables and as fertilizer can maintain a balanced soil ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study outlines the potential of wild plant species (Pluchea dioscoridis (L.) DC.) for the phytoremediation of trace elements (TEs) such as Pb, Cd, Zn, Mn, and Cu at various contaminated locations: an industrial area (S1); a residential area with a high traffic load (S2); and a rural area (S3). Data showed that the photosynthetic pigments and flavonoids decreased significantly at S1, at which TEs accumulated with high concentrations. This drop in chlorophyll concentration reflects foliar damage caused by TE contamination. The carotenoids/chlorophyll index (Car/Chl) ratio showed non-significant variations for all studied spheres. High values of chlorophyll ratio (a/b) were also recorded in plant leaves which faced TE stress. The translocation factors (TF); enrichment coefficient for root (ECR); and shoot (ECS) varied clearly among the TEs as well as the studied sites, proving the ability of the plant to carry out phytoremediation of Pb, Cd, and Zn. The highest values of the metal accumulation index (MAI) were recorded at S1. Significant positive correlations for the pairs Cd and Pb in soil versus P. dioscoridis tissues indicated its usefulness as a phytoextraction strategy for these elements. The Soil Fertility Clock (SFC) concept is based on the assumption that the critical content (range) of essential nutrients in the soil is adapted to the requirements of the most sensitive plant in the cropping sequence (CS). This provides a key way to effectively control the productivity of fertilizer nitrogen (Nf). The production goals of a farm are set for the maximum crop yield, which is defined by the environmental conditions of the production process. This target can be achieved, provided that the efficiency of Nf approaches 1.0. Nitrogen (in fact, nitrate) is the determining yield-forming factor, but only when it is balanced with the supply of other nutrients (nitrogen-supporting nutrients; N-SNs). The condition for achieving this level of Nf efficiency is the effectiveness of other production factors, including N-SNs, which should be set at ≤1.0. A key source of N-SNs for a plant is the soil zone occupied by the roots. N-SNs should be applied in order to restore their content in the topsoil to the level required by the most sensitive crop in a given CS. The goals of this study were to assess retention on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to identify predictors of loss to follow-up (LTFU) among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Senegal. HIV-positive individuals presenting for initiation of ART in Dakar and Ziguinchor were enrolled and followed for 12 months. Data were collected using interviews, clinical evaluations, laboratory analyses, chart review, and active patient tracing. Of the 207 individuals enrolled, 70% were female, 32% had no formal education, and 28% were severely food insecure. At the end of the follow-up period, 58% were retained on ART, 15% were deceased, 4% had transferred care, 5% had migrated, and 16% were lost to follow-up. Enrollment in Ziguinchor (OR 2.71 [1.01-7.22]) and severe food insecurity (OR 2.55 [1.09-5.96]) were predictive of LTFU. Sex, age, CD4 count, BMI <18.5, country of birth, marital status, number of children, household size, education, consultation with traditional healers, transportation time, and transportation cost were not associated with LTFU. The strongest predictor of severe food insecurity was lack of formal education (OR 2.75 [1.30-5.80]). Addressing the upstream drivers of food insecurity and implementing strategies to enhance food security for PLHIV may be effective approaches to reduce LTFU and strengthen the HIV care cascade in the region. The main purpose of this paper was to outline a novel approach for the use of industrial by-products generated in coal mines and coal-fired power plants as the components for artificial soils. Several coal combustion by-products, coal mine waste and organic waste materials were tested at laboratory scale for use in the reclamation of areas degraded by coal mining activity. The role of artificial soils was the land rehabilitation of the high acidic waste heap. The results revealed that the amounts of organic matter (14.87–25.01%) and nutrients in the soil substitutes were sufficient to support plant growth, i.e., N (0.37–0.51%), P (0.23–0.47%), K (1.78–3.17%), Ca (4.93–8.39%) and Mg (1.16–1.71%). A phytotoxicity test using white mustard (Sinapis alba) seeds under laboratory conditions showed good germination results (56–66%) for three soil substitutes that did not contain fly ash from biomass combustion, compared to the reference soil (84%). The relationships established for the aqueous leachate parameters of soil substitutes vs. the Sinapis alba germination revealed negative correlations with electrical conductivity (r = −0.88), SO42− (r = −0.91) and Cl− (r = −0.70) ions; the two latter ones were responsible for the salinity which hampered the germination process of the soil substitutes. Moreover, quite similar correlations were obtained between the germination of Sinapis alba and the trace elements of the soil substitutes: Fe (r = −0.69), Cd (r = −0.72), Cu (r = −0.80), Pb (r = −0.78) and Zn (r = −0.74). However, negative and significant correlations in aqueous leachates were shown only with Ni concentration (r = −0.73). The relevance of these results for the effect of salinity on germination and the early growth of S. alba was discussed in detail and was confirmed with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The study proved that the physicochemical characteristic of recycled wastes exhibited their potential usefulness for the reclamation of affected areas such as mine waste heaps. Background Programmatic treatment outcome data for people living with human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) in West Africa, where the virus is most prevalent, are scarce. Methods Adults with HIV-2 initiating or receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) through the Senegalese national AIDS program were invited to participate in this prospective, longitudinal observational cohort study. We analyzed HIV-2 viral loads, CD4 cell counts, antiretroviral drug resistance, loss to follow-up, and mortality. We also examined changes in treatment guidelines over time and assessed progress toward the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 90-90-90 targets for HIV-2. Results We enrolled 291 participants at 2 sites for 926.0 person-years of follow-up over 13 years. Median follow-up time was 2.2 years per participant. There were 21 deaths reported (7.2%), and 117 individuals (40.2%) were lost to follow-up, including 43 (14.7%) who had an initial visit but never returned for follow-up. CD4 counts and HIV-2 viral suppression (< 50 copies/mL) at enrollment increased over calendar time. Over the study period, 76.7% of plasma viral loads for participants receiving ART were suppressed, and median CD4 gain was 84 cells/μL in participants' first 2 years on study. Since the UNAIDS 90-90-90 strategy was published, 88.1% of viral loads were suppressed. Fifteen percent of patients experienced virologic failure with no known resistance mutations, while 56% had evidence of multiclass drug resistance. Conclusions Participants in the Senegalese national AIDS program are initiating ART earlier in the course of disease, and more modern therapeutic regimens have improved outcomes among those receiving therapy. Background: Food insecurity can contribute to poor adherence to both tuberculosis treatment and HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART). Interventions that target food insecurity have the potential to increase treatment adherence, improve clinical outcomes, and decrease mortality. The goals of this study were to compare the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of implementing two different forms of nutrition support for HIV-TB co-infected adults in the Casamance region of Senegal. Methods: We conducted a randomized pilot implementation study among HIV-TB co-infected adults initiating treatment for TB (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03711721). Subjects received nutrition support in the form of a local food basket or Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), distributed on a monthly basis for six months. Results: A total of 178 monthly study encounters were completed by 26 HIV-TB co-infected adults; 14 received food baskets and 12 received RUTF. For both the food basket and RUTF, 100% of subjects obtained the supplement at every study encounter, transferred the supplement from the clinic to their household, and consumed the supplement. The food basket had greater acceptability and was more likely to be shared with members of the household. Adherence to TB treatment and ART exceeded 95%, and all outcomes, including CD4 cell count, hemoglobin, nutritional status, and food security, improved over the study period. All subjects completed TB treatment and were smear negative at treatment completion. The total cost of the local food basket was approximately $0.68 per day versus $0.99 for the RUTF. Conclusion: The implementation of nutrition support for HIV-TB co-infected adults in Senegal is feasible and may provide an effective strategy to improve adherence, treatment completion, and clinical outcomes for less than 1 USD per day. Soil humus degradation strengthens nutrient mining, especially phosphorus. This study was carried out on the Ukrainian Forest-Steppe Zone (UFSZ). A total of 21 soil profiles have been investigated: 11 Phaeozems, 6 Luvisols, and 4 Chernozems. Soils were tested for particle size distribution, calcium carbonate (CC), pH, and organic carbon (Corg). The evaluation of humus degradation as a reason of P depletion was performed based on indicators such as Humus Stock Gap (HSG), Humus Stability Index (S), and Yield Gap/Gain (YG/G). In order to evaluate the degree of P depletion, total phosphorus (Ptot) and its five fractions: water soluble - PH2O, exchangeable - PEX, bound to Fe and Al - PFe/Al, bound to Ca - PCa, and residual P - Pres, have been determined. Data revealed that in 14 of 21 investigated soils, S indices were below the threshold its value of nine, considered as the balanced content of humus with respect to soil texture. Next, in 11 of 21 cases, the negative humus balance indicates the yield gap in Phaeozems and Chernozems. The first three P pools (PH2O, P-EX and PAl/Fe) in Phaeozems were exhausted, constituting less than 10% of the Ptot. In Phaeozems, PAl/Fe, in Luvisols, PEX, and in Chernozems, PH2O fractions were basic indicators of available P status. Their pools were directly or indirectly controlled by PCa. Humus content in Phaeozems and Chernozems revealed as the key factor impacting both total P and/or its available resources. The concept of the research is based on the effects of acid rains on the foliage of plants. The study was carried out on 12 coniferous tree (thuya, fir, larch, juniper, Scots pine, black pine, common spruce, silver spruce, cypress, yew tree, oriental thuya, Douglas fir) and 8 monocotyledonous plants (maize, wheat, barley, oats, rye, ryegrass, fescue, ditch reed). Samples of needles and leaves were collected from 20 species during the growth season from spring to summer at different sites of Poznan agglomeration. The needles and leaves were treated with 6 simulated acid rains (SAR) of pH 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 and kept for 72 hours at 22°C. The filtrates were tested for Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn and Fe. The data showed that the concentrations of leaked elements were closely related to the pH of SAR and also depended on the species. The most deleterious simulated acid rains for all tested plants were within the range pH = 3.0-4.0. Mineral leakage of coniferous needles as well as monocotyledonous leaves fitted mostly exponential and linear models, with exception of Na, which was described by the quadratic course. On the basis of the photosynthetic maintenance index [PMI = Mg/(Zn+Fe)], 67% of coniferous tree (CT) represented very low photosynthetic maintenance, contrary to monocotyledons (MP) with 75% corresponding to low photosynthetic maintenance. The high share of MP in this range is the finding which clearly points to the potential adaptability of the latter species to highly anthropogenic ecosystems. Urban greens should not be planted predominantly with conifers, although some may develop slight (grand fir, cypress, oriental thuya, Douglas fir) to high adaptability (Thuya occidentalis, juniper, yew tree) to urban conditions. Nearly all monocotyledons, particularly ryegrass, fescue, wheat, barley, oats and rye may be growing within anthropogenic zones, having strong adaptability features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The geochemical reactivity of single superphosphate (SSP), triple superphosphate (TSP), phosphate rock (PR), partially acidulated phosphate rock (PAPR) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) was evaluated in an incubation trial. The soil was Anthrosols, Ap horizon (Sandy loam). Solubility equilibrium of phosphates was calculated by phosphate (PPot = logH2PO4 - pH) and calcium (CaPot = logCa + 2pH) potentials. Next, activity ratio (AR°) and Woodruff potential (ΔF) were considered for estimating phosphate dynamics in the soil. Data showed that phosphate potentials stressed on significant solubility process and varied accordingly to the rates of the fertilizers: −5.50, −4.81, −4.47 and −4.09 for 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg P ha−1. The values of the Woodruff potential (ΔF) varied widely from −1929 to 8573 cal mol−1, i.e., from marginal supplying power in the case of the control treatment to very high supplying power for the TSP (Triple superphosphate). These findings are of practical value for the following reasons: TSP and KH2PO4 are recommended for quick and high P supply to plants; SSP and PAPR for moderate supply and finally PR for slow and low supply. Human diets have proportionally altered throughout centuries depending mostly on food access (basically staple crops) and available conservation practices (processing methods). The driving forces were decidedly the amounts of harvested crops biomass than the nutritive values (organic and mineral components), since agricultural practices did not favor the so-called mineral dilution effect. The dynamic growth of world population has induced huge application of fertilizers, which in turn boosted biomass production and consequently, led to the emergence of mineral dilution. The greatest impact has been recorded on micronutrients, and health concerns are alarming and being identified as epidemiological challenges. This conceptual résumé "Unprocessed versus Processed Food - Micronutrients Dilemma" outlines the real tasks we are facing at several levels, among others i) defining micronutrients, ii) methods of measuring the intakes, iii) agricultural practices and micronutrient phytoavailability, iv) staple crops and micronutrient concentrations, v) biofortification and meeting nutritional requirements, vi) food processing and micronutrient bioavailability, vii) food canning and quality. The slogan "Good nutrition for sustainable development" is not longer applicable for developing countries only. It is becoming a transboundary concern like for iodine (I), (salt iodization) and selenium (Se), simultaneously with iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) worldwide deficiencies. Two human groups are directly targeted: children and pregnant woman, irrespective of geographical origin. The study compared coal fly and bottom ashes for their ability to inactivate metals and lead to soil remediation. Soil was artificially contaminated with Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd at five degrees. Next, both ashes were added at five rates: 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% and all treatments incubated. Data showed that for moderately contaminated soils, ash rates of 0.5 ' 1.0% were efficient from 40 to 70% for Zn and Cd, and raised markedly to between 70 and 93% for Cu and Pb. For extremely contaminated soils, the rates of ashes at 1.0, 1.5 and 2% were much more efficient (60 ' 80%). The use of fly and bottom ashes for metal inactivation and soil remediation should give greater consideration to the effect of pH and the type of heavy metals than the content of SiO2 and Al2O3. Acid soils are still a constraint for agrochemists as well as crop plant breeders and growers. The emerging acidity activates aluminum, which becomes harmful for crop plants at relatively high levels. Under such conditions, plant growth and the consecutive formation of dry matter are strictly controlled by nitrogen and aluminum. The boosting properties of nitrogen versus the depressing effect of aluminum are considered as agrochemical driving forces potentially regulating cropping goals. The field study (agricultural farm in Western Poland) was scheduled on the basis of the concept illustrated on the graph 1. It was assumed that the index NO3/Alex (ratio of nitrate to exchangeable aluminum) should be a targeted parameter for evaluating their pH-mediated geochemical interactions and the resulting effects on crop plant growth. Next, two contrasting crop plants i.e., winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L) were used for calibrating the biomass and elaborating ranges of NO3/Alex indices. On the basis of the study, four operational NO3/Alex ranges were elaborated and implemented within the values < 0.50 to 2.00 (for winter wheat) and < 0.35 to 1.40 (for sugar beet). Experimental sites were characterized by less favorable growth conditions, specifically for sugar beet with 85% of root biomass formed at NO3/Alex< 0.35. The same applies for winter wheat with slightly improved growth medium (i.e., 75% of green biomass established at NO3/Alex< 0.50. The NO3/Alex phytotoxicity index was conceived as a simple, easily applicable, but critical tool for assessing crop plant response under acidification constraints, where the "curative" application of nitrogen seems to be the sole aluminum salutary "escapement".
