This document provides a general overview of the MAORY system with a description of the general architecture and the main characteristics of all sub-systems. A short description of the performance expected is also provided. A more detailed description of the MAORY design is available in the document MAORY Design Report while for all the AO related aspects of MAORY the reader is referred to the MAORY AO Design and Analysis Report. This document can be viewed, together with the Executive Summary and the MAORY System Design Report, as an introductory reading to understand the MAORY instrument

In this paper the results obtained during the CATARSI project have been shown. The aim was to implement an algorithm capable to extract soil moisture and vegetation biomass from SAR data at both L and X bands. An algorithm based on Artificial Neural Networks was tested on SAR images collected in 2010 during the BioSAR (L-band) campaign in Sweden for the retrieval of forest biomass and in 2010-2012 in Italy by using COSMO-SkyMed (X-band) data for the retrieval of agricultural crop biomass. The results obtained demonstrated a clear sensitivity of backscattering at these frequencies to the biomass of both agricultural crops and forests. The retrieval algorithm was able to identify different levels of biomass with a notable accuracy.

The effective preservation of both current and historical scientific data will underpin a multitude of ecological, economic and political decisions that shape the future of our society. The SCIDIP-ES project addresses the long-term preservation of the knowledge encoded in scientific data by providing preservation e- infrastructure services which support the persistent storage, access and management needs. Using exemplars from the Earth Science domain we highlight the key preservation challenges and barriers to be overcome by the SCIDIP-ES infrastructure. SCIDIP-ES augments existing science data e-infrastructures by adding specific services and toolkits which implement core preservation concepts, thus guaranteeing the long-term access and exploitation of data assets across and beyond their designated communities.
