Introduction/Objective. The essence of the treatment of degenerative knee joint diseases is pain relief, restoring motion range and stability of knee joints. Methods. In this study, 35 patients participated after having surgery of the knee joint. The patients had a posterior-stabilized (PS) endoprosthesis in one joint, and a posterior cruciate ligament retaining (CR) endoprosthesis in the other. Kinematic data was collected using a 3D optical system for tracking fluorescent markers in time. Based on these data, the following parameters were determined: degree of flexion, mediolateral (ML) translation, lateral gap, medial gap, and the angle of change between the transtibial and transfemoral axes. Results. The results show a more pronounced flexion degree with the PS prosthesis compared to the CR prosthesis. Also, the results show negligible values of the ML translation, lateral gap, and medial gap in both types of prostheses. Using the non-parameter Wilcoxon test, a substantial difference in the angle change between the transtibial and transfemoral axes was confirmed, that is, in the flexion angles on the CR and PS prostheses. Conclusion. This study shows that there is no great difference in the use of the PS or CR designs of endoprostheses. Better behavior and range of motion in the knee joint were established with the implantation of the PS endoprosthesis. This conclusion is confirmed by the substantial difference in the degree of flexion of the knee joint and in the position of the transversal axes of the tibia and femur.

We developed the OBR-Scolio ontology that models scoliosis as pathological state of spine using the method of extracting from the FMA reference ontology in anatomical domain and the principal ontology framework of the OBR reference ontology, which is spread over anatomy, physiology and pathology domains. Following the FMA modeling framework, OBR-Scolio ontology initially is created in Protégé using its frame based representation. In order to enable more powerful reasoning support, ontology visualization, and more precise concepts' definition and description, we converted OBR-Scolio in OWL DL language, due to its higher expressiveness. The authors discuss the stability of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction which is based on biomechanical modeling. They state that stress and strain distribution has been determined by finite element model of bones. The authors explore underlying mechanisms of knee function after ACL reconstruction.

The article discusses the application of alternative time-frequency methods for embedded biomedical signal processing which is optimized by wavelet based algorithms. It notes that the entirety of global signal can be modified by Fourier Transformations (FT). It mentions that the compatibility of electrocardiography to biomedical signals has improved.

The paper presents the methodology for multicriteria decision analysis based on negative-positive-neutral (NPN) logic, which is an extension of both crisp and fuzzy logic. As the basic modeling framework we use fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) which are a set of meaningful concepts, connected to form a network, with fuzzy weighted links measuring the strength and direction of effect of cause concept over target concept. Introducing NPN logic to FCM modeling framework provides the possibility to measure, the so-called, side effect of each decision-making path. This information additionally describes under what mutual conditions between concepts FCM settles down in equilibrium. An illustrative example from the real industrial environment related to metal cutting process planning parameters analysis demonstrates the potential of the methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyzes the basic notion of negative-positive-neutral (NPN) logic and relations, and its proposed adaptive approach to causality weights assessment in Serbia & Montenegro. The NPN logic is mentioned to provide an alternative framework for fuzzy cognitive maps development and decision. Furthermore, it explains that linguistic models allow for quasi-dynamical adaptation to the change of concepts values that provides deeper understanding of possible effects.

Cutting temperature, which depends on many factors, has a significant and, mostly negative influence on cutting process parameters. On the other hand, the quality of the machined surface is one of the most important qualitative indicators of a cutting process. Both parameters cannot be omitted in the modeling of metal cutting. Due to the high complexity of the process itself, it is almost impossible to encompass all the relevant factors and their influence within a mathematical formula. In such cases, it is much more efficient to use and process data obtained through experiments. Nowadays, systems that are based on artificial intelligence are often used for this purpose. The paper presents the application of the artificial neural networks and hybrid, neuro-fuzzy model in the prediction of a workpiece temperature and surface roughness. One of the most common causes of human death is stroke, which can be caused by carotid bifurcation stenosis. In our work, we aim at proposing a prototype of a medical expert system that could significantly aid medical experts to detect hemodynamic abnormalities (increased artery wall shear stress). Based on the acquired simulated data, we apply several methodologies for1) predicting magnitudes and locations of maximum wall shear stress in the artery, 2) estimating reliability of computed predictions, and 3) providing user-friendly explanation of the model's decision.
