This article focuses on the motives why, basically in the early 1980s, Foucault, Castoriadis and Rancière dealt with, and wrote, about Ancient democracy. To elucidate the reasons, this article firstly links the authors with one tradition of the French Hellenism, namely the School of Paris. Secondly, it considers the specific biographical trajectory of each one of them and, finally, the challenge provoked by the crisis of Marxism. This work finishes explaining why we can learn from our three authors analyzing the context of production of their ideas.

Francisco Rodríguez Adrados’ La democracia ateniense (1975) was canonical since its publication in 1966 (with a different title). The current article analyses, first, the ideological foundations of the work and, secondly, the prioritization of textual commentary and philological tools in historical analysis, that is, the textual-centrism of the book, pointing out also its accomplishments. The interpretation of our article is based in a textual as well as contextual analysis. It explores the intellectual networks and the configuration of the field of Classics in Spain in the formation of Adrados’s work. On the other hand, it reads the main sources and intertexts of La democracia ateniense, the German philology (Jaeger and Schachermeyr). The aim of this work is to understand the appropriation, limits, scope and ideological horizon of Adrados’ vision of Athenian democracy, as well as his achievements and innovations, the “scholastic creativity”. Adrados is one of the main founding fathers of Classics in Spain.

Direct democracy (DD)—including initiatives and referendums—is increasingly used to decide policy around the world. Based on a wide‐ranging review of literature published over the past 25 years, this article offers theoretical and methodological recommendations to advance the study of DD. First, more focus should be placed on the stages of DD and how they affect one another. Richer theories can only flow once the origins, rules, and context of DD are considered—including the endogeneity of DD. Second, a stronger analysis of how DD is justified by democratic theory is needed; I demonstrate that some mechanisms of DD are clearly supported by democratic theory while others lack a coherent foundation. Finally, historical (e.g., ancient Athens) and contemporary DD are often used interchangeably. An overview of past institutions reveals that contemporary DD is not a return to something that once was. Each lesson provides fruitful avenues for future research.
