PURPOSE: To determine the proportion of patients with undetected symptoms of overactive bladder by using the overactive bladder-validated 8 (OAB-V8) screening questionnaire and investigate these symptoms were undetected in female patients who were hospitalized. METHODS: We invited 2,250 female patients hospitalized in the Aegean region of Turkey to answer a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions on evidence of lower urinary tract symptoms (OAB-V8), relevant medical history, and demographic data. Patients with a total OAB-V8 score≥8 were defined as having OAB symptoms. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with OAB symptoms in this study was 40.6%. Nearly 57% of the patients with OAB symptoms had not been previously admitted to any hospital for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The two most common reasons why women with OAB symptoms did not admit themselves to a hospital because of LUTS were as follows: "I did not think I had a disease" and "The symptoms did not bother me," with a response rate of 74.7%. Aksu, Buket/0000-0001-7555-0603 WOS:000379543300024 Dexketoprofen trometamol is a sensitive molecule and consists of a fine, poor flowing, extremely adhesive powder that leaves behind gummed residue on the punch surface of the tablet press machine. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum formulation utilizing different modeling techniques and the Quality by Design (QbD) approach without sticking problem during production. General full factorial design of experiments (DoE) was formed and the raw experimental data were evaluated using Minitab, artificial neural network (ANN) and gene expression programming (GEP) modules of the INForm. The Minitab, ANN and GEP modeling programs suggested the optimum formulations that should contain 2.03% and 2.50% glyceryl dibehenate by applying slug compression. However, in trial studies, the only lubricant that resolves the sticking problem was sodium stearyl fumarate. Therefore, new optimum formula trials have been performed by employing sodium stearyl fumarate at the same percentages instead of glyceryl dibehenate. All of the optimum formula analysis indicates that quality target product profile (QTPP) was met and the sticking problem was resolved.

10. A new learning trajectory for trigonometric functions

- Abstract
Educational research has shown that many secondary school students consider the subject of trigo-nometric functions as difficult and only develop shallow and fragmented understanding. It is un-clear which of the two popular approaches to introducing trigonometry, namely the ratio method and the unit circle method, works best. In this study we propose a new framework for trigonometric understanding and a new, dynamic geometry supported trajectory for learning trigonometric func-tions. We also report on the results of a classroom case study in which the new approach has been implemented and researched. We discuss the task-related difficulties that students faced in their concept development and we describe their trigonometric understanding in terms of our framework.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Crown is the apparent part of the dental implant. Detection of crown defects is important for health of the patient before the surgery. In this study, a computer aided detection system developed to analyze tooth dental implant crown digital images to detect defects. The developed system detects various implant defects such as fractures, cracks, dents, spots and roughness. Micro fractures are detected using morphologic operations by the system. Dents and spots are also detected using this image processing techniques. Textural analysis can be performed on digital images to detect different roughness and porosity areas on dental implant. WOS: 000264684800018, PubMed ID: 19198719, Objectives: To investigate the frequencies of risk factors and the prevalence of coronary heart disease (CAD) in heavy vehicle drivers. Methods: This cross-sectional type study was conducted between November 2004 and September 2006 in heavy vehicle male drivers registered with the Sivas Professional Drivers Association, Sivas, Turkey. From 400 individuals, 200 heavy vehicle male drivers, and 200 control subjects, 90% were reached for the sample. A questionnaire including sociodemographic specifications, body mass index (BMI), and risk factors for CHD was performed and some blood and physiologic parameters such as lipid profiles, fasting glucose level, resting ECG, were checked in all individuals; if required exercise ECG and angiography was performed. Results: The drivers' weight, body fat mass, triglycerides, very low-density lipoprotein, and BMI means were higher than the control group at a statistically significant level, and their mean high-density lipoprotein level, which is a protective factor for CAD, was lower than the control group at a statistically significant level. In the drivers' group, 9 of the 109 exercise ECGs (8.3%), and in the control group 3 of 61 (4.9%) were evaluated as abnormal. In 5% of the drivers, the exercise test was evaluated as positive and this prevalence was 1.7% in the control group (p=0.081). A total of 3.3% of the participants had a positive exercise ECG. Conclusions: Periodic health check-ups for heavy vehicle drivers would allow for the diagnosis of heart disease at an early stage and the initiation of necessary treatment. 13. A practical, low-cost, short-term storage method for genomic DNA

The aim of this study was to assess the DNA preservation capability of cellulose paper towel and blotting paper as low-cost alternatives to commercial DNA preservation products. Chicken blood was applied as DNA source to each paper towel, blotting paper, FTA® cards and DNA/RNA Shield™. All samples were stored at room temperature for 130 days. DNA extraction from dried blood spots was performed after various time periods using Tris–EDTA and NaOH protocols. PCR activity and the mean amount of DNA isolated from paper towels were reliable. The results of this study demonstrated that cellulose-based blotting paper and especially paper towel had considerable DNA binding and preservation capacity for at least 130 days at room temperature without DNA degradation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate treatment outcome, survival data and prognostic factors in patients with uterine sarcoma treated by postoperative radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The records of 46 patients treated between 1993 and 2003 were reviewed. Median age was 55 (range 31-75). There were 21 mixed mullerian tumors, 12 leiomyosarcomas, 11 endometrial stromal sarcomas and two adenosarcomas. According to FIGO classification 65.2% were Stage I, 17.4% Stage II, 13% Stage III and 4.3% Stage IV. All patients received external radiotherapy with 1.8 Gy daily fractions up to 50.4-64 Gy (median 50.4 Gy). Intracavitary brachytherapy was applied to 39 patients. Twelve patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. Results: Median follow-up time was 48 months (6-144 months). Seventeen patients (37%) developed distant metastases and one patient had local failure. Five-year overall, disease-free and local recurrence-free survival rates were 57.8%, 60.5% and 97.8%, respectively. Univariate analysis demonstrated that stage (p = 0.011), histologic subtype (p = 0.010), tumor size (p = 0.044), positive peritoneal cytology (p = 0.006) and the use of chemotherapy (p = 0.005) had a significant effect on overall survival. Prognostic factors influencing disease-free survival were stage (p = 0.009), positive peritoneal cytology (p = 0.000) and the use of chemotherapy (p = 0.002). The only prognostic factor affecting local control was stage (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Postoperative radiotherapy seems to be an effective adjuvant treatment providing high local control rates in uterine sarcomas. However its efficacy should be clarified by randomized trials. The important prognostic factors influencing the treatment results were stage, histologic subtype, tumor size and positive peritoneal cytology.

Objective: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder classified among the vasculitides, which can affect all types and sizes of blood vessels. Vascular involvement may be seen in 25–50% of BD patients. In this study, we examined the characteristics of vascular involvement in patients with BD. Methods: One hundred and eighty patients with BD were included in the study. The diagnosis of vascular involvement was made on clinical signs, by Doppler ultrasonography and/or angiography using computed tomographic or magnetic resonance techniques where appropriate. Detailed clinical characteristics were recorded for each patient. Results: Seventy-one patients (39.4%) had vascular involvement. In patients with vascular lesions, the frequency of male sex was significantly higher than in patients without vascular lesions (89.8% vs. 63.3%, respectively; p<0.001). Of 71 BD patients with vascular involvement, 68 had venous lesions (95.8%). Three patients had arterial lesions without venous thrombosis. Eleven patients had arterial involvement with venous thrombosis. The most frequent type of vascular involvement was deep venous thrombosis in the lower extremities (n = 56, 78.9%). There was a significant association between deep venous thrombosis and superficial thrombophlebitis (r = 0.325, p<0.01). Twenty-four patients (33.8%) had vena cava thrombosis and two had vena hepatica thrombosis. In patients with vascular involvement, the frequency of erythema nodosum was significantly higher (p = 0.001) and the frequency of ocular involvement was significantly lower (p<0.05) than in patients without vascular involvement. 20. The Structural Characteristics, Management, and Challenges of Backyard Poultry Farming in Residential Areas of Turkey

The aim of this study was to collect, for the first time, comprehensive information about the backyard poultry sector in Turkey. This included a profile of the poultry owners, flock characteristics, husbandry, housing conditions, the owners’ biosecurity measures and the challenges of backyard poultry farming in residential areas of Turkey. An online semi-structured survey was fully completed by 1094 respondents. The majority of respondents (91%) owned fewer than 50 birds and reported raising other poultry species besides chickens (64%). Most of the participants indicated that they kept poultry as food for family use (83%) and had been involved in chicken-raising activities for less than 10 years (86%). Free-range coops were the type of housing most preferred by the respondents (86%). However, there was a lack of awareness about poultry diseases and poultry health care conditions. Respondents that confirmed wild bird and rodent access to their feeders and drinkers reported high rates of internal-external parasites, Escherichia coli infections and chronic respiratory diseases (p < 0.001). Lack of regional regulations (84%), animal theft (80%), lack of information on poultry management (79%), minimizing predation (75%), and the need for vaccination and veterinary services (73%) were the most cited challenges. The results highlighted the need for improved biosecurity measures and for a regulatory framework that takes into account the risks to commercial poultry flocks and public health.

22. A case with insulinoma experiencing syndrome of inappropriate secretion of ADH -- case report.

We report a case of thirty-five years old woman with insulinoma, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). She had a previous history of epidural hematoma operation. She was given oxcarbazepine 300 mg/day because of epilepsy. At the third month of the treatment the patient referred to our clinic with tonic-clonic convulsion, hypoglycemia (serum glucose level of 34 mg/dl) and hyponatremia (118 mEq/l) were detected. The biochemical diagnosis of hypoglycemia was established in the third hour of prolonged fasting test when blood glucose level was 32 mg/dl, serum insulin level was 26.5 microIU/ml, C-peptid was 6.8 ng/ml, the insulin/glucose ratio was 0.82. Endoscopic ultrasonography detected 18x19 mm lesion in pancreas. Hyponatremia was diagnosed as SIADH after excluding other possible etiologies of hyponatremia. Because of hyponatremic effect of oxcarbazepine, it was changed with valproate sodium. Water restriction therapy was applied. After enucleation of insulinoma, hyperglycemia persisted for a week, but there was no need for insulin and plasma glucose levels never exceeded 250 mg/dl. Then sustained improvement in hypoglycemic attacks and hyponatremia has been observed. Thus the patient was cured and remained euglycemic. Although oxcarbazepine was started again, hyponatremia did not reoccur. Hypoglycemia stimulates the secretion of neurotransmitter and neuropeptides including arginine-vasopressin (AVP), but hypoglycemia related hyponatremia has not been reported up to now. This is the first case with insulinoma presenting with persisting hyponatremia and improving after insulinoma resection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dissolution of chromite from the Bushveld Complex of South Africa in liquid slags was studied in the temperature range 1550° to 1665°C under argon gas. The slag compositions were similar to those of ferrochromium production and stainless steel making. Empirical relations between the slag composition and the dissolution of chromite were established through the use of a statistical model. The dissolution process was investigated by using the rotating cylinder technique and measured by the chemical analysis of the samples taken from the melt and the SEM-EDAX analysis of the reacted chromite cylinder samples. The chromite grains were depleted in iron and chromium as the dissolution progressed, leaving behind an alumina and magnesia rich spinel. The experimental data was evaluated by using kinetic models and mass transfer coefficients of chromium, iron and oxygen ions through the phase boundary between the solid chromite cylinder and the liquid slag were determined.

24. Abnormal Ductus Venosus Flow and Tricuspid Regurgitation at 11–14 Weeks' Gestation have High Positive Predictive Values for Increased Risk in First-Trimester Combined Screening Test: Results of a Pilot Study

Objective: To investigate the relationship between two novel first-trimester ultrasound markers (abnormal fetal ductus venosus [DV] flow and presence of tricuspid regurgitation [TR]) and the results of the first-trimester combined screening test in pregnancies with a normal karyotype. The screening test involves nuchal translucency measurement by ultrasound, and measurement of serum free β-chorionic gonadotropin and pregnancyassociated plasma protein A. Materials and Methods: The study included 58 pregnancies with amniocentesis-proven normal karyotypes and ultrasound-proven normal fetal anatomy. DV flow and TR were initially evaluated by ultrasound at 11–14 weeks' gestation. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of abnormal DV flow and TR for determining increased test risk (> 1 in 300) were calculated. Results: Abnormal DV flow and TR were detected in seven (12%) and six (10%) women, respectively. The sensitivities of abnormal DV flow, TR, and dual abnormalities (abnormal DV flow plus TR) for predicting increased risk in the combined screening test were low (33.3%, 27.7%, and 26.3%, respectively). However, their corresponding specificities (97.5%, 97.5%, and 100%) and positive predictive values (85.7%, 83.3%, and 100%) were reasonably high, with particularly low false-positive rates (2.5%, 2.5%, and 0%). When abnormal DV flow and TR were both positive, the combined test risk was consistently above 1 in 300. Conclusion: Determination of DV flow and TR as initial markers in unselected pregnancies merits further investigation, as the combination of these parameters might reliably predict an increased risk in combined screening test result, with low false positivity.

Context. Although, many studies have been made on the clinical course of autoimmune thyroiditis, this study focused on women and the factors effecting the natural course such as Selenium. Objective. The study aimed to determine Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) clinical course in adults and the factors that could affect it. Design. The study was in a retrospective manner between 2010-2018. Subjects and Methods. 101 patients with HT were followed for 60.7±32.7 months. Biochemical and ultrasonographic data were collected. We investigated whether the age at diagnosis, family history, smoking habits, levothyroxine replacement therapy, and serum selenium (Se) levels influenced the disease course. Results. No relationship was observed between age and thyroid functions, thyroid volumes (TV), and autoantibody (Ab) levels at diagnosis. Ab levels were irrelevant with TV, echogenicity, and nodularity at diagnosis. However, initial TSH levels were significantly associated with anti-TPO levels (p=0.028, r=0.218). In the untreated group, thyroid functions seemed to be stable. TV decreased significantly in both treated and untreated patients (p<0.001). The decrease in TV was significantly higher in the treatment group (p=0.002). In euthyroid and subclinical hypothyroid patients, levothyroxine therapy did not affect the decrease in TV. Ab levels remained stable in untreated patients, but anti-TPO levels significantly decreased in treated patients (p<0.001). Smoking seemed to increase only anti-Tg levels (p=0.009). Family history was not associated with any of the studied parameters. Serum Se level was negatively correlated only with thyroid echostructure and only in treated patients. TV showed a "Gaussian distribution" in all patients at the diagnosis and at the end, independent of levothyroxine treatment. Conclusions. Most euthyroid patients remained euthyroid during five years of follow-up. The decrease in TV was significantly prominent with LT4 treatment. The study aimed to investigate whether dietary supplementation of oleuropein (O) alone or with organic selenium (OSe) will show the similar effects as the dietary supplementation of α-tocopherol acetate (TA) on performance, blood Heterophil/Lymphocyte ratio (H/L ratio) and brain Hsp70 gene in Japanese quails reared under heat stress (34°C). A total of 800 Japanese quails were kept in wire cages in a temperature-controlled room at either 22°C (thermoneutral, TN) or 34°C (heat stress, HS) for 8 h/days and fed 5 different dietary treatments. Quails were fed on a basal diet (NC) or the diets supplemented with TA (TA200) or O (O200) at 200 mg/kg alone or with OSe (TA200+OSe and O200+OSe) to NC. HS decreased the final body weights (BWs) (PHsp70 gene expression (PHsp70 gene expression had positive effects. Consequently, the present study showed that supplementation of O alone or with OSe eliminated the deleterious effects of heat stress on growth performance, blood H/L ratio and brain Hsp70 gene expression of Japanese quails.

The study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of oregano essential oil (OEO) on the morphological development of small intestine of broilers with different feeding times (immediate, 24, 48 or 72 h posthatching delayed feeding) from d 0 to 14. The diets were supplemented with: no, 250 or 500 mg/kg of the OEO (OEO250 and OEO500, respectively). Fasting for 72 h significantly increased the weight and length of small intestine segments of broilers on d 14. The OEO250 and OEO500 significantly increased the jejunum villus height of chickens fed immediately and the duodenum villus height of broilers fasted for 48 h. The duodenum villus surface area of chickens fasted for 48 h and the ileum villus surface area of broilers fasted for 24 h were significantly increased by the OEO250. The OEO500 significantly enhanced the duodenum villus surface area of broilers fasted for 24 h and their ileum villus surface area fasted for 48 h. The crypt depths of small intestine segments of broilers fasted for 72 h were significantly reduced by OEO250 and OEO500. In conclusion, the dose of phenolic compounds in OEO reaching the small intestine might be enough for protecting the intestinal epithelial cells from damages of toxins and for removing the negative effects of delayed feeding on the morphological development of all the small intestine segments of broiler chicks on d 14.

Increased global use of highly productive breeds of farm animals has been associated with loss of genetic diversity in most species, but especially in local poultry species. In Italy, especially in the Veneto region since 2000, various governmental, non-governmental and private organizations have tried to preserve the genetic diversity of poultry resources. This successful conservation effort has included various activities: improving knowledge of biological functions, conservation of typical morphological characteristics, development of selection strategies, control of inbreeding and, finally, valorization strategies to diffuse the breed in local productive systems. These activities provide a good example for developing countries, such as Turkey. With the aim of contributing to conservation activities relating to the poultry resources of Turkey, this study described the current status of local chicken breeds in Turkey and Italy, and also makes some recommendations for developing countries such as Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: The cases of 22 patients with uterine serous papillary carcinoma (USPC) were reviewed for this study. STUDY DESIGN: The data of 22 patients diagnosed with USPC was examined. 18 patients underwent formal staging surgery including type I hysterectomy, bilateral salphingo-oophorectomy, para-aortic and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy, appendectomy and omentectomy in our clinic. Four patients were sent to our clinic from other hospitals after primary surgery. Staging of the disease was based on the FIGO 1998. RESULTS: At the time of diagnosis the median age was 62.2 years. The most common clinic complaint was vaginal bleeding (86.3%). seven patients were stage I (31.8%), one was stage II (4.5%), eight were stage III (36.3%) and six were stage IV (27.3%). Median disease-free survival was 25 months. Recurrence was not influenced by the stage of disease, lymphatic metastasis, depth of myometrial invasion, adjuvant therapy and the type of adjuvant treatment. However, the recurrence was influenced by positive cytology and invasion of omentum. CONCLUSIONS: Staging surgery should be performed on patients with USPC. Invasion of omentum and positive cytology were poor prognostic factors. The effect of adjuvant therapy on prognosis is not clear.

31. Postmortem Identification of a Foreign Body in the Heart: A Case Report.

- Abstract
The presence of a foreign body in the heart have been reported, mostly in adults. Deaths and injuries can result from the breakage or rupture of angiography catheters. We present a case in which an angiocath tip was identified in the right ventricle of a pediatric patient, and the patient died as a result thereof. As no similar cases have been reported, we would like to draw attention to this subject. A 4.5-month-old female patient who was hospitalized 3 times during her life had a history of peripheral venous access establishment in the extremities with angiocatheters. During these hospital admissions, a central catheter was not inserted, and no additional problems were identified. Emergency personnel responded and found the patient at home, experiencing bradycardia and arrhythmia. She was resuscitated and taken to the hospital, where she died. The autopsy revealed, the tip of a 1.5 cm long, 1 mm wide lumen catheter had penetrated the right ventricular wall (Fig. 1) (Fig. 2), thus her death was attributed to complications that developed as a result of the peripheral vascular access catheter tip breaking and migrating to the right ventricle. Although the patient did not have an ECG, physical examination by the emergency ambulance personnel revealed an irregular and bradycardic heartbeat, suggesting that the child may have developed arrhythmia and atrioventricular conduction block. Health care professionals must check upon removal of peripheral intravenous access, and record whether the integrity of the peripheral catheter tip was compromised to prevent similar events in future. - Abstract
Objectives: The aim of the study is to assess the prevalence and clinical features of headache in patients treated with botulinum toxin for blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. In addition, our secondary aim was to identify potential factors influencing the development of these headaches., Methods: A total of 70 patients who were treated with on a botulinum toxin A for dystonia treatment in our clinic between January 2023 and March 2023 were retrospectively screened, and the clinical and demographic characteristics of the patients who reported headache complaints after the last botulinum toxin treatment were examined., Results: Headache was reported in 8 (%11.4) of the 70 patients included in the study. Of the 8 patients who reported headaches, 6 (%75) had the onset of the complaint within the first 24 hours. There was no significant correlation between headache occurrence and factors like age, gender, diagnosis, botulinum toxin dosage, application site, comorbid diseases, or hypertension. However, a statistically significant link was observed between the intensity of pain experienced during treatment and the frequency of headaches after the treatment., Conclusions: Botulinum toxin treatment can lead to short-term headaches in some patients, starting early after the procedure. The significant link between the frequency of these headaches and the pain experienced during injection highlights the need to examine factors like the volume and dilution rate of the toxin, the solvent used, treatment area, treatment purpose, patient characteristics, and the physician's technique. - Abstract
Objectives: Skin changes in acromegaly are often the first sign of the disease. The aim of this study was to describe the cutaneous findings in patients with acromegaly. In addition, a secondary aim was to investigate the possible association of these findings with remission status and concomitant endocrinopathies., Design, Patients, and Measurements: In this prospective multicenter study, 278 patients over the age of 18 years with acromegaly who were followed up in 14 different tertiary healthcare institutions were included. These patients, who were followed up by the Endocrinology Department, were then referred to a dermatologist for dermatological examination. The frequency of skin lesions was investigated by detailed dermatologic examination. Dermatological diagnosis is reached by clinical, dermatological and/or dermoscopic examination, and rarely skin punch biopsy examinations in suspicious cases. The possible association of the skin findings between remitted and nonremitted patients and with concomitant endocrinopathies were evaluated., Results: The most common skin findings in patients with acromegaly in our study were skin tags (52.5%), cherry angiomas (47.4%), seborrhoea (37%), varicose veins (33%), acneiform lesions (28.8%), hyperhidrosis (26.9%) and hypertrichosis (18.3%). Hypertrichosis was significantly more prevalent in patients nonremitted (p: .001), while xerosis cutis was significantly more prevalent in patients remitted (p: .001). The frequency of diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism was significantly higher in patients with varicose veins and seborrhoeic keratosis than those without. Additionally, the coexistence of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and galactorrhea was significantly higher in patients with Cherry angioma than in those without Cherry angioma (p-values: .024, .034 and .027, respectively). The frequency of hypogonadism in those with xerosis cutis was significantly higher than in those without (p: .035)., Conclusions: Cutaneous androgenization findings such as skin tag, seborrhoea, acne and acanthosis nigricans are common in patients with acromegaly. Clinicians should be aware that skin findings associated with insulin resistance may develop in these patients. It can be said that the remission state in acromegaly has no curative effect on cutaneous findings. Only patients in remission were less likely to have hypertrichosis. This may allow earlier review of the follow-up and treatment of acromegaly patients presenting with complaints of hypertrichosis. Additionally, it can be said that patients with skin findings such as cherry angioma may be predisposed to a second endocrinopathy, especially hypothyroidism. - Abstract
p53 is a crucial tumor suppressor in vertebrates that is frequently mutated in human cancers. Most mutations are missense mutations that render p53 inactive in suppressing tumor initiation and progression. Developing small-molecule drugs to convert mutant p53 into an active, wild-type-like conformation is a significant focus for personalized cancer therapy. Prior research indicates that reactivating p53 suppresses cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth in animal models. Early clinical evidence with a compound selectively targeting p53 mutants with substitutions of tyrosine 220 suggests potential therapeutic benefits of reactivating p53 in patients. This study identifies and examines the UCI-1001 compound series as a potential corrector for several p53 mutations. The findings indicate that UCI-1001 treatment in p53 mutant cancer cell lines inhibits growth and reinstates wild-type p53 activities, including DNA binding, target gene activation, and induction of cell death. Cellular thermal shift assays, conformation-specific immunofluorescence staining, and differential scanning fluorometry suggest that UCI-1001 interacts with and alters the conformation of mutant p53 in cancer cells. These initial results identify pyrimidine trione derivatives of the UCI-1001 series as candidates for p53 corrector drug development.

Aim: The study aimed to measure and compare differences (a) in the unfinished nursing care interventions overall and the order in which they are left unfinished; and (b) in the underline reasons, as perceived by Italian, Slovak and Turkish nursing students., Background: In recent years, in the nursing education context a novel line of research in the field of unfinished nursing care as those interventions required by patients, but omitted or delayed, has emerged. However, no studies have been conducted at the international level., Design: An international, comparative cross-sectional study was performed in 2022-2023 and reported here according to Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines., Methods: A multinational research network was formed with a convenient sample of 13 universities and 60 campuses (4595 students). The Unfinished Nursing Care Survey for Students (UNCS4S) was administered. A total of 1850 students participated., Results: According to the UNCS4S total score, Italians reported an average 50.9 out of 110 unfinished nursing care interventions (CI95 % 47.6-54.1), Slovakians 54.9 (CI95 % 53.7-56.1) and Turkish students 50.4 (CI95 % 49.2-51.5) (p<0.001). Some interventions were reported more often as unfinished across countries as supervising the task assigned to the nursing aides, going to the patient without being called, spending the required time with the patient and their caregivers and emotionally supporting patients and their caregivers. In terms of reasons, total scores were statistically different across countries (Italy: 45.92 out of 90, CI95 % 43.91-47.9; Slovakia: 62, CI95 % 61.02-62.98; Türkiye: 72.29, CI95 % 71.13-73.45; p<0.001); however, at the factor level, communication issues, lack of material resources and issues in supervision of nursing aides were reported in all countries as the most important reasons of the unfinished nursing care., Conclusions: Students learn to shape and set priorities early in their nursing careers with similar order in what to leave unfinished as first, despite the different educational structures, care cultures and healthcare systems. Among the unfinished nursing care reasons perceived, the most influential were similar across countries, suggesting common areas for improvement. 36. Common human leucocyte antigensassociated with the development of subacute thyroiditis and COVID-19.

- Abstract
Purpose: Case reports of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) following coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) have been reported. Because the relationship between SAT and human leucocyte antigen (HLA) alleles is known, we aimed to determine HLA alleles that may predispose a patient to coronavirus infection and/or post-COVID-19 SAT., Method: This retrospective study was conducted in 51 patients with SAT and 190 healthy bone marrow donor volunteers. HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1 were genotyped using next-generation sequencing. The study population was grouped into four groups according to SAT and COVID-19 history., Results: The frequency of HLA-DQB1*04:02 was higher in the COVID-19(-) participants than in the COVID-19(+) participants (=0.045). The presence of HLA-DQB1*04:02 was associated with a lower risk of developing COVID-19 in all groups. The frequencies of HLA-B*35:01, HLA-B*35:03, HLA-DRB1*12:01, and HLA-DRB1*14:01 were different in the SAT(+) group than in the SAT(-) group in COVID-19(-) group. The frequencies of HLA-C*12:03, HLA-DQB1*06:04, HLA-DRB1*13:02, and HLA-DRB1*13:03 were different in the SAT(+) group than in the SAT(-) group in the COVID-19 (+) group. The difference in the frequency of these HLA types remains significant when the four groups are included together as follows: In the COVID-19(+) group, the frequencies of HLA-DRB1*13:02, and HLA-DRB1*13:03 were higher in the SAT(+) group than in the SAT(-) group. - Abstract
Ash dieback, caused by the fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (Helotiales, Ascomycota) , is threatening the existence of the European ash, Fraxineus excelsior . During our search for biological control agents for this devastating disease, endophytic fungi were isolated from healthy plant tissues and co-cultivated with H. fraxineus to assess their antagonistic potential. Among the strains screened, Penicillium cf. manginii DSM 104493 most strongly inhibited the pathogen. Initially , DSM 104493 showed promise in planta as a biocontrol agent. Inoculation of DSM 104493 into axenically cultured ash seedlings greatly decreased the development of disease symptoms in seedlings infected with H. fraxineus . The fungus was thus cultivated on a larger scale in order to obtain sufficient material to identify active metabolites that accounted for the antibiosis observed in dual culture. We isolated PF1140 (1) and identified it as the main active compound in the course of a bioassay-guided isolation strategy. Furthermore, its derivative 2, the mycotoxin citreoviridin (3), three tetramic acids of the vancouverone type (4-6), and penidiamide (7) were isolated by preparative chromatography. The structures were elucidated mainly by NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), of which compounds 2 and 6 represent novel natural products. Of the compounds tested, not only PF1140 (1) strongly inhibited H. fraxineus in an agar diffusion assay but also showed phytotoxic effects in a leaf puncture assay. Unfortunately, both the latent virulent attributes of DSM 104493 observed subsequent to these experiments in planta and the production of mycotoxins exclude strain Penicillium cf. manginii DSM 104493 from further development as a safe biocontrol agent.IMPORTANCEEnvironmentally friendly measures are urgently needed to control the causative agent of ash dieback, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus . Herein, we show that the endophyte DSM 104493 exhibits protective effects in vitro and in planta . We traced the activity of DSM 104493 to the antifungal natural product PF1140, which unfortunately also showed phytotoxic effects. Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the malignant potential of thyroid nodules with macrocalcifications and to evaluate the role of other sonographic findings in the diagnosis of malignancy in thyroid nodules besides macrocalcifications., Methods: The findings of 8250 patients who applied to our outpatient clinic and underwent thyroid ultrasonography(US) between 2008 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. We included a total of 296 patients with 296 macrocalcified nodules (macrocalcification group) and an age- and sex matched group of 300 patients (control group) with the cytopathologic and/or histopathologic data of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of thyroid nodules without calcification. Demographic characteristics of these patients, US characteristics of the nodules, and thyroid function tests were recorded. Cytopathological data of FNAB were classified according to BETHESDA., Results: The malignancy rate was 14.2% (42/296) in the macrocalcification group and 5.3% (16/300) in the control group (p < 0.001). There was no significant relationship between interrupted peripheral calcification and malignancy. Hypoechoic or markedly hypoechoic appearance, irregular border, solid structure, presence of accompanying pathological lymphadenopathy on sonographic examination and upper and middle zone localization were other sonographic features that increased the risk of malignancy of a nodule. The presence of autoimmunity was not found to be associated with the risk of malignancy. TSH and calcitonin levels of malignant nodules were higher than benign nodules. There was no significant difference between gender and malignancy. In the univariate analysis, it was found that the presence of macrocalcification increased the risk of malignancy 2.935 times. (OR:2.935, p < 0.001.95% CI for OR 1.611-5.349) In addition, being younger, being in the high TIRADS category, and being in the upper and middle zones were factors that increased the risk of malignancy. Gender, TSH level, nodule volume and structure were not associated with malignancy. However, after multivariate analysis, factors that significantly increased the risk of malignancy were younger age, higher TIRADS category, and nodule localization., Conclusion: In our study, the malignancy rate was higher in the macrocalcification group than in the control group. However, no correlation was found after multivariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, younger age, higher TIRADS category, and nodules located in the upper and middle zone were other factors associated with malignancy. 39. Development of Allosteric Small Molecule APOBEC3B Inhibitors from In Silico Screening.

- Abstract
APOBEC3B cytosine deaminase contributes to the mutational burdens of tumors, resulting in tumor progression and therapy resistance. Small molecule APOBEC3B inhibitors have potential to slow or mitigate these detrimental outcomes. Through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and computational solvent mapping analysis, we identified a novel putative allosteric pocket on the C-terminal domain of APOBEC3B (A3Bctd), and virtually screened the ChemBridge Diversity Set (N~110,000) against both the active and potential allosteric sites. Selected high-scoring compounds were subsequently purchased, characterized for purity and composition, and tested in biochemical assays, which yielded 13 hit compounds. Orthogonal NMR assays verified binding to the target protein. Initial selectivity studies suggest these compounds preferentially target A3Bctd over related deaminase APOBEC3A (A3A), and MD simulations indicate this selectivity may be due to the steric repulsion from H56 that is unique to A3A. Taken together, our studies represent the first virtual screening effort against A3Bctd that has yielded candidate inhibitors suitable for further development.

40. Relationship between care dependency, adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with care: The mediating role of patient-reported missed care.

- Abstract
Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the mediating effect of patient-reported missed care in the relationship between care dependency, adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care., Design: A cross-sectional and correlational study., Methods: A total of 374 patients were recruited from the medical and surgical inpatient units of two public university hospitals in Türkiye using a convenience sampling method from May to August 2022. The data were collected using the Care Dependency Scale, MISSCARE Survey-Patient, Trust in Nurses Scale and Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Care Scale. The relationships between the variables were analysed using a sequential mediation model (Model 6) in Hayes' PROCESS macro., Results: Care dependency was found to have a significant negative effect on misscare-communication; however, it had no significant effect on misscare-basic care. Misscare-communication had a significant positive effect on the experience of adverse events, while misscare-basic care had no significant effect. Misscare-communication and basic care had a significant negative effect on trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care. Misscare-communication was found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between care dependency and experiencing adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care., Conclusion: The results emphasize the importance of misscare-basic care, communication and patients' care dependency in improving patient outcomes such as experiencing adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care, and they extend existing nursing studies by addressing missed care and care dependency together from the perspective of patients., Impact: We urge nurse managers to consider the role of misscare in the impact of patients' level of care dependency on patient outcomes. Accordingly, nurse managers should focus first on interventions to eliminate misscare-communication. Purpose: Asymptomatic pyuria and bacteriuria are more prevalent in diabetic patients and may be associated with urinary tract infection (UTI). The aim of this study is to investigate the association between asymptomatic pyuria/bacteriuria at the initiation of SGLT2 inhibitor and UTI risk in female patients with type 2 diabetes., Methods: The study was designed as a practical, single-center, prospective, cohort study. The female outpatients with type 2 diabetes initiated SGLT2 inhibitor were included. Patients who were symptomatic or treated in the past 3 months for urinary or genital tract infection, had a high risk for UTI were excluded. Hospitalization/antibiotic use for indications other than UTI were exclusion criteria during follow-up. All patients were followed up for 3 months. Pyuria and bacteriuria were exposure and, UTI was the outcome. Cumulative incidence and relative risk of UTI were analyzed for pyuria and bacteriuria., Results: 143 female patients were included among 1132 female type 2 diabetic patients. 13 patients were excluded during follow-up. 41.5% of the patients (n = 54) had pyuria and 28.5% (n = 37) had bacteriuria. The cumulative incidence of UTI was 20% in the whole cohort, 25,9% (n = 14/54) in the pyuria group and 18.9% (n = 7/37) in the bacteriuria group. The relative risk of UTI was 1.64 (95% CI: 0.82-3.26, p = 0.15) for pyuria, 0.92 (95% CI: 0.42-2.01, p = 0.84) for bacteriuria, and 1.2 (95% CI: 0.47-3.08, p = 0.69) for pyuria plus bacteriuria. Adjusted odd ratios revealed similar results., Conclusions: Asymptomatic pyuria/bacteriuria at the initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors are not risk factors for UTI in women with type 2 diabetes., (© 2023. 42. Apatite/Chitosan Composites Formed by Cold Sintering for Drug Delivery and Bone Tissue Engineering Applications.

- Abstract
In the biomedical field, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite is still one of the most attractive candidates as a bone substitute material due to its analogies with native bone mineral features regarding chemical composition, bioactivity and osteoconductivity. Ion substitution and low crystallinity are also fundamental characteristics of bone apatite, making it metastable, bioresorbable and reactive. In the present work, biomimetic apatite and apatite/chitosan composites were produced by dissolution-precipitation synthesis, using mussel shells as a calcium biogenic source. With an eye on possible bone reconstruction and drug delivery applications, apatite/chitosan composites were loaded with strontium ranelate, an antiosteoporotic drug. Due to the metastability and temperature sensitivity of the produced composites, sintering could be carried out by conventional methods, and therefore, cold sintering was selected for the densification of the materials. The composites were consolidated up to ~90% relative density by applying a uniaxial pressure up to 1.5 GPa at room temperature for 10 min. Both the synthesised powders and cold-sintered samples were characterised from a physical and chemical point of view to demonstrate the effective production of biomimetic apatite/chitosan composites from mussel shells and exclude possible structural changes after sintering. Preliminary in vitro tests were also performed, which revealed a sustained release of strontium ranelate for about 19 days and no cytotoxicity towards human osteoblastic-like cells (MG63) exposed up to 72 h to the drug-containing composite extract.

- Abstract
Sepsis-induced cardiac injury represents a major clinical challenge, amplifying the urgency for effective therapeutic interventions. This study aimed to delve into the individual and combined prophylactic effects of Vitamin C (Vit C) and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) against inflammatory heart injury in a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) induced polymicrobial sepsis rat model. Thirty adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups: Control, CLP, Vitamin C, CoQ10, and Vit C + CoQ10, each consisting of six rats. Treatments were administered orally via gavage for 10 days prior to the operation. Eighteen hours post-sepsis induction, the animals were euthanized, and specimens were collected for analysis. The study examined variations in oxidative (TOS, OSI, MDA, MPO) and antioxidative markers (TAS, SOD, CAT, GSH), histopathological changes, inflammatory cytokine concentrations (TNF-α, IL-1β), nitric oxide (NO) dynamics, and cardiac indicators such as CK-MB. Impressively, the combined regimen markedly diminished oxidative stress, and antioxidative parameters reflected notable enhancements. Elevated NO levels, a central player in sepsis-driven inflammatory cascades, were effectively tempered by our intervention. Histological examinations corroborated the biochemical data, revealing diminished cardiac tissue damage in treated subjects. Furthermore, a marked suppression in pro-inflammatory cytokines was discerned, solidifying the therapeutic potential of our intervention. Interestingly, in certain evaluations, CoQ10 exhibited superior benefits over Vit C. In the realm of regenerating damaged or degenerated bones through minimally invasive techniques, injectable materials have emerged as exceptionally promising. Among these, calcium phosphate bone cements (CPCs) have garnered significant interest due to their remarkable bioactivity, setting it apart from non-degradable alternatives such as polymethyl methacrylate cements. α-Tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) is a widely used solid phase component in CPCs. It can transform into calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHAp) when it comes in contact with water. In this study, we aimed to create an injectable, self-setting bone cement using low-temperature synthesized α-TCP powder as a single precursor of the powder phase. We found that changes in the pH of the liquid phase (pH 6.0, pH 6.2, pH 7.0 and pH 7.4) significantly altered the cement's setting, handling, and mechanical properties. The formation of the octacalcium phosphate (OCP) phase was identified in our study, which positively affects the osteoblastic cell response. Hardened OCP-forming bone cements prepared using a liquid phase with pH 7.0 and 7.4 showed better osteogenic cell attachment and proliferation than those prepared with pH 6.0 and 6.2. As the primary solid phase, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is a pivotal precursor in cellular biomineralization. The intrinsic interplay between ACP and Howard factor underscores the significance of understanding their association for advancing biomimetic ACP development. While organic compounds play established roles in biomineralization, this study presents the synthesis of ACP with naturally occurring organic compounds (ascorbate, glutamate, and itaconate) ubiquitously found in mitochondria and vital for bone remodeling and healing. The developed ACP with organic compounds was meticulously characterized using XRD, FTIR, and solid-state
13 C and31 P NMR. The morphological analysis revealed the characteristic spherical morphology with particle size close to 20 nm of all synthesized ACP variants. Notably, the type of organic compound strongly influences true density, specific surface area, particle size, and transformation. The in vitro analysis was performed with MC3T3-E1 cells, indicating the highest cell viability with ACP_ASC (ascorbate), followed by ACP_ITA (itaconate). The lowest cell viability was observed with 10 %w/v of ACP_GLU (glutamate); however, 1 %w/v of ACP_GLU was cytocompatible. Five new coordination polymers (CPs) were obtained as a result of hydrothermal reactions of 2,2-dimethylglutaric acid (H
2 dmg) and 1,4-bis(1 H -1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene ( pbtx )/1,2-bis(1 H -1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene ( obtx ) ligands with some metal ions [Co(μ-dmg)(μ-obtx)]n ( 1 ), [Zn(μ-dmg)(μ-obtx)]n ( 2 ), [Cd(μ-dmg)(μ-obtx)]n ( 3 ), [Co2 (μ-dmg)2 (μ-pbtx)2 ]n ( 4 ), and [Cd(μ-dmg)(H2 O)(μ-pbtx)]n ( 5 ). All of the compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis techniques. The single-crystal X-ray studies show that all compounds exhibit 2D layer structures. To examine the ammonia sensing properties of five new coordination complexes ( 1-5 ), the absorption and emission spectra of CPs embedded in ethyl cellulose thin films were measured by exposure to different concentrations of ammonia (NH3 ) vapor. Introduction: The most important toxicity of transarterial radioembolization therapy applied in liver malignancies is radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis due to hepatopulmonary shunt of Yttrium-90 (
90 Y) microspheres. Currently, Technetium-99m macroaggregated albumin (99m Tc-MAA) scintigraphic images are used to estimate lung shunt fraction (LSF) before treatment. The aim of this study was to create a phantom to calculate exact LFS rates according to99m Tc activities in the phantom and to compare these rates with LSF values calculated from scintigraphic images., Materials and Methods: A 3D-printed lung and liver phantom containing two liver tumors was developed from Polylactic Acid (PLA) material, which is similar to the normal-sized human body in terms of texture and density. Actual %LSFs were calculated by filling phantoms and tumors with99m Tc radionuclide. After the phantoms were placed in the water tank made of plexiglass material, planar, SPECT, and SPECT/CT images were obtained. The actual LSF ratio calculated from the activity amounts filled into the phantom was used for the verification of the quantification of scintigraphic images and the results obtained by the Simplicity90 YTM method., Results: In our experimental model, LSFs calculated from99m Tc activities filled into the lungs, normal liver, small tumor, and large tumor were found to be 0%, 6.2%, 10.8%, and 16.9%. According to these actual LSF values, LSF values were calculated from planar, SPECT/CT (without attenuation correction), and SPECT/CT (with both attenuation and scatter correction) scintigraphic images of the phantom. In each scintigraphy, doses were calculated for lung, small tumor, large tumor, normal liver, and Simplicity90 YTM . The doses calculated from planar and SPECT/CT (NoAC+NoSC) images were found to be higher than the actual doses. The doses calculated from SPECT/CT (with AC+with SC) images and Simplicity90 YTM were found to be closer to the real dose values., Conclusion: LSF is critical in dosimetry calculations of90 Y microsphere therapy. - Abstract
Background: There are several studies investigating the role of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in the development and recurrence of subacute thyroiditis (SAT). The HLA subtypes associated with SAT were usually determined in a population-based manner and HLA-B*35 , HLA-B*18:01 , HLA-C*04:01 , and HLA-DRB1*01 were detected to play a role in the disease susceptibility and prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine HLA alleles associated with the tendency of recurrence and prevention of SAT within the Turkish population. Methods: This prospective study was conducted with 51 SAT patients and 720 healthy bone marrow donor volunteers. HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1 were genotyped using next-generation sequencing. Results: The frequency of HLA-A*02:09 , HLA-B*35:01/35:02/35:03 , HLA-C*04:01 , HLA-DRB1*12:01 , and DRB1*13:03 were associated with an increased risk of SAT development (Odds Ratio: 22.4, 9.5, 10.3, 4.2, and 3.5, respectively). While HLA-A*02:09 , HLA-B*35:01 , HLA-B*44:02 HLA-C*07:18 , and HLA-C*16:04 were associated with nonrelapsing SAT, HLA-DR*12:01 was associated with relapsing SAT. HLA-B*35:02 , HLA-B*35:03 , and HLA-C*04:01 were more frequent both in relapsing and nonrelapsing groups according to control group. The frequency of HLA-B*18:01 , reported as a risk factor previously, was similar in the SAT and control groups ( p = 0.959). HLA-DRB1*11:01 was associated with a lower risk of SAT development. Conclusions: Along with - B*358 and -C*04 , HLA-A*02:09 was detected as an important risk factor for SAT development in our population. HLA-DRB1*11:01 appears to be the protective HLA subtype against SAT. HLA-A*02:09 , HLA-B*35:01 , HLA-B*44:02 , HLA-C*07:18 , HLA-C*16:04 , HLA-DQ*06:03 , and HLA-DR*12:01 subtypes can establish a tendency to relapsing or nonrelapsing SAT.

- Abstract
A fungal endophyte originating from the Canary Islands was identified as a potent antagonist against the fungal phytopathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus , which causes the devastating ash dieback disease. This endophyte was tentatively identified as Pezicula cf. ericae , using molecular barcoding. Isolation of secondary metabolites by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) yielded the known compounds CJ-17,572 ( 1 ), mycorrhizin A ( 3 ) and cryptosporioptides A-C ( 4 - 6 ), besides a new N -acetylated dihydroxyphenylalanin derivative 2 , named peziculastatin. Planar structures were elucidated by NMR and HRMS data, while the relative stereochemistry of 2 was assigned by H,H and C,H coupling constants. The assignment of the unknown stereochemistry of CJ-17,572 ( 1 ) was hampered by the broadening of NMR signals. Nevertheless, after semisynthetic conversion of 1 into its methyl derivatives 7 and 8 , presumably preventing tautomeric effects, the relative configuration could be assigned, whereas comparison of ECD data to those of related compounds determined the absolute configuration. Metabolites 1 and 3 showed significant antifungal effects in vitro against H. fraxineus . Furthermore, 4 - 6 exhibited significant dispersive effects on preformed biofilms of S. aureus at concentrations up to 2 µg/mL, while the biofilm formation of C. albicans was also inhibited. Thus, cryptosporioptides might constitute a potential source for the development of novel antibiofilm agents.

- Abstract
Abstract: Sepsis-induced acute liver injury is a life-threatening condition involving inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. In the present study, the preventive effects of resveratrol (RV) alone and RV-loaded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs + RV) against sepsis-induced damage were investigated and compared in a rat model of polymicrobial sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Rats were divided into four groups: Sham, CLP, RV, and AgNPs + RV. Pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) activation, presepsin, procalcitonin (PCT), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHDG), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) levels were assessed to determine the treatments' effects. AgNPs + RV treatment significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines, NF-κB activation, presepsin, PCT, 8-OHDG, and VEGF levels compared with the CLP group, indicating attenuation of sepsis-induced liver injury. Both RV and AgNPs + RV treatments increased SIRT1 levels, suggesting a potential role of SIRT1 activation in mediating the protective effects. In conclusion, AgNPs + RV treatment demonstrated extremely enhanced efficacy in alleviating sepsis-induced liver injury by modulating inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction, potentially mediated through SIRT1 activation.
