Based on three years of data observed by Beijing MST radar between 2012 and 2014, this study gives the distribution characteristics of the turbulence energy dissipation rate ε and the vertical turbulence diffusion coefficient Kz in the troposphere–lower stratosphere over Beijing based on the spectral width method. Additionally, from the perspective of atmospheric stability expressed by the Brunt–Väisälä frequency N and the gradient Richardson number Ri, the seasonal variations of turbulence parameters at different heights are analyzed. The results show that ε (Kz) is distributed in the range of 10−4 to 10−1.5 m2 s−3 (100 to 101 m2 s−1), with median values of 10−3 to 10−2.5 m2 s−3 (100.4 to 100.75 m2 s−1). In the height range of −1 km to about +1 km from the tropopause, the profiles of ε have no noticeable seasonal difference from October to next May, and ε increases sharply with the slope of linear regression ∇log(ε)/∇h = 0.25 (m2 s−3) km−1. The seasonal variation of turbulence parameters has noticeable differences at different atmospheric layers. Furthermore, the atmospheric static/dynamic stability and turbulence intensity are the influencing factors of turbulence parameters. From the tropopause to 14 km, the values of ε and N both have a peak from October to next May, and this peak layer disappears from July to August. Within the range of 2–4 km from the ground, Kz and the frequency of Ri < 0.25 have a significant positive correlation, with a Pearson correlation coefficient greater than 0.5, and both have large value layers in March to May and September to October. The turbulence intensity above 15 km is likely the main factor affecting the turbulence dissipation rate and vertical turbulence diffusion coefficient.

Ozonesonde launches were routinely performed in Beijing from March 2001 to February 2019 to generate a unique long-term (18 years) vertical ozone profile dataset over mainland China. This study elucidates the vertical ozone structure on various temporal scales during this 18 years period by using the entire ozonesonde data product for the first time. Moreover, the long-term variability in the integrated ozone column over the North China Plain (NCP) is also explored by comparing the retrievals from ozonesonde at the Beijing urban site and a Dobson ozone spectrometer at the Xianghe suburban site. Our results indicate that vertical ozone exhibited clear monthly variability characterized by high values of tropospheric ozone during warm seasons and high values of stratospheric ozone during cold seasons. Stratospheric intrusions frequently occurred during spring and effectively transported cold air masses with high ozone from the lower stratosphere downward into the upper troposphere. Evident interannual variability in the lower troposphere and in ozone-rich areas of the stratosphere was revealed by vertical ozone distributions. The integrated total ozone columns retrieved from ozonesonde and Dobson bear close resemblance and exhibit strong sinusoidal monthly variations. In the troposphere and boundary layer, the integrated ozone column presented a significant positive trend during 2001–2012 in Beijing; a sudden decline occurred between 2011 and 2013, which was followed by a slow and insignificant increase after the implementation of the Clean Air Action plan in 2013 on the NCP.

41 patients with clinical features of discogenic sciatica during the last 25 years, proved later on by investigations and imaging to be a nondiscogenic in origin, The aim of the study is to inform spinal surgeons of possible differential diseases that mimic discogenic sciatica. All patients present clinically with a sciatica. They were recorded and treated accordingly and sent for investigations. Patients proved to have discogenic sciatica were excluded. Others further investigated and followed until finding a cause for the symptoms and recorded as nondiscogenic sciatica syndrome. 22 individual aetiologies were found to cause nondiscogenic including infectious, traumatic, oncogenic, degenerative, metabolic and ischemic causes. In conclusion a proper history and thorough physical examination, in addition to imaging and investigations were very useful in detecting the exact etiology of sciatica. The pain pattern and the related clinical features were the guide for the diagnosis. High index of suspicion is vital to achieve the definite diagnosis to avoid missing the diagnosis of nondiscogenic sciatica. The unique geographical location and high altitude of the Tibetan Plateau can greatly influence regional weather and climate. In particular, the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) anticyclone circulation system over the Tibetan Plateau is recognized to be a significant transport pathway for water vapor and pollutants to enter the stratosphere. To improve understanding of these physical processes, a multi-location joint atmospheric experiment was performed over the Tibetan Plateau from late July to August in 2018, funded by the five-year (2018–2022) STEAM (stratosphere and troposphere exchange experiment during ASM) project, during which multiple platforms/instruments—including long-duration stratospheric balloons, dropsondes, unmanned aerial vehicles, special sounding systems, and ground-based and satellite-borne instruments—will be deployed. These complementary methods of data acquisition are expected to provide comprehensive atmospheric parameters (aerosol, ozone, water vapor, CO2, CH4, CO, temperature, pressure, turbulence, radiation, lightning and wind); the richness of this approach is expected to advance our comprehension of key mechanisms associated with thermal, dynamical, radiative, and chemical transports over the Tibetan Plateau during ASM activity.

The radiances scattered or emitted by clouds demonstrate diverse features at different wavelengths due to different cloud physical structures. This paper presents a method (the smallest-radiance-distance method, SRaDM) of revealing the physical structures of clouds. The method is based on multi-spectral radiances measured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Aqua. The principle and methodology of SRaDM is deduced and provided in this paper. Correlation analysis based on data from MODIS and Cloud Profiling Radar (onboard CloudSat), collected from January 2007 to December 2010 over an ocean area (15°N–45°N, 145°E–165°E), led to selection of radiances at 13 wavebands of MODIS that demonstrated high sensitivity to cloud physical structures; radiances at the selected wavebands were subjected to SRaDM. The Standardized Euclidean distance is introduced to quantify the degree of changes in multi-spectral radiances (termed Drd) and in physical structures (termed Dst) between cloud profiles. Statistics based on numerous cloud profiles show that Drd decreases monotonically with a decrease in Dst, which implies that small Drd always accompanies small Dst. According to the law of Drd and Dst, the new method, SRaDM, for revealing physical structures of clouds from the collocation of cloud profiles of similar multi-spectral radiances, is presented. Then, two successful experiments are presented in which cloud physical structures are captured using multi-spectral radiances. SRaDM provides a way to obtain knowledge of the physical structures of clouds over relatively larger areas, and is a new approach to obtaining 3D cloud fields.

Part physical and chemical characteristics of dust aerosol were determined for samples collected from Otindag Sandland of China in spring, 2001. Number concentration, mass concentration, chemical element concentration and size distribution of aerosol particles with 0.5 μm < DP < 100.0 μm were examined. The average number and mass concentrations of aerosols were 274.8 cm-3 and 0.54 mg/m³ for the field period respectively, and 31.4 cm³ and 0.07 mg/m³ for the non-dusty days. PM10 played a dominant role in the aerosol mass concentrations. The particles with DP < 8.0 μm accounted for about 93.7% of total aerosol number loading in dusty days. The particle size distributions of aerosols were characterized by bi-modal logarithm normal function in heavy and moderate dusty days, and mono-modal in windblown and non-dusty days. Crustal elements such as Al, Fe, etc. in aerosols almost originated from soils. Pollutant elements of S, Pb, etc. associated with aerosols were affected by remote anthropogenic pollutant sources in upwind regions. Mo, V and Co in aerosols were possibly from other dust sources other than local soils. We present absorption properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) sampled in six different water bodies along extreme altitudinal, latitudinal, and trophic state gradients. Three sites are in Norway: the mesotrophic Lysefjord (LF), Samnangerfjord (SF), and Røst Coastal Water (RCW); two sites are in China: the oligotrophic Lake Namtso (LN) and the eutrophic Bohai Sea (BS); and one site is in Uganda: the eutrophic Lake Victoria (LV). The site locations ranged from equatorial to subarctic regions, and they included water types from oligotrophic to eutrophic and altitudes from 0 m to 4700 m. The mean CDOM absorption coefficients at 440 nm [ a CDOM ( 440 ) ] and 320 nm [ a CDOM ( 320 ) ] varied in the ranges 0.063−0.35 m − 1 and 0.34−2.28 m − 1 , respectively, with highest values in LV, Uganda and the lowest in the high-altitude LN, Tibet. The mean spectral slopes S 280 − 500 and S 350 − 500 were found to vary in the ranges of 0.017−0.032 nm − 1 and 0.013−0.015 nm − 1 , respectively. The highest mean value for S 280 − 500 as well as the lowest mean value for S 350 − 500 were found in LN. Scatter plots of S 280 − 500 versus a CDOM ( 440 ) and a CDOM ( 320 ) values ranges revealed a close connection between RCW, LF, and SF on one side, and BS and LV on the other side. CDOM seems to originate from terrestrial sources in LF, SF, BS, and LV, while RCW is characterized by autochthonous-oceanic CDOM, and LN by autochthonous CDOM. Photobleaching of CDOM is prominent in LN, demonstrated by absorption towards lower wavelengths in the UV spectrum. We conclude that high altitudes, implying high levels of UV radiation and oligotrophic water conditions are most important for making a significant change in CDOM absorption properties.
