ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the effects of lingual frenotomy on the breastfeeding of infants, based on the electrical activity of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles and assessment of the breastfeeding. Methods Observational study developed between October 2017 and June 2018 with a sample of 20 newborns and infants who attended a dental clinic and were diagnosed with ankyloglossia. Another 20 were excluded for meeting some of the following exclusion criteria: babies more than 6 months old, who were not on exclusive or mixed breastfeeding, who had other clinical impairments that interfered with breastfeeding, who had other foods introduced into their diet, who had neurological changes and/or craniofacial deformities, and/or who did not finish all the stages of the study. Breastfeeding was assessed with the UNICEF Breastfeeding Assessment and Observation Protocol, while the muscle electrical activity was assessed with the Electrical Activity Assessment Protocol for the Masseter and Suprahyoid Muscles in Newborns During Breastfeeding. The same speech-language-hearing therapist conducted the two assessments both before the conventional frenotomy and 7 days after it. Results The signs suggestive of breastfeeding difficulties changed 7 days after the surgery, with a p-value ≤ 0.002 for general observation of the mother, position of the infant, latch, and sucking. The maximum voluntary contraction of the masseter was the only integral parameter with a difference, as the electrical activity had decreased. Conclusion Behaviors favorable to breastfeeding increased 7 days after the frenotomy in all the breastfeeding assessment categories, whereas the electrical activity of the masseter decreased.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the relationship between microcephaly and social inequality indicators in the state of Paraíba during the biennium January 2015 and December 2016. Methods Ecological study with data from newborn microcephaly records and municipal socioeconomic, environmental, and demographic indicators was conducted using two health information systems from the Brazilian Ministry of Health (SINASC and SINAN) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. A Poisson multiple regression model was applied with a significance level of 5%. Results Among 223 municipalities in Paraíba, 74 registered new cases of microcephaly. The number of Zika virus cases, number of inhabitants, number of households without adequate water supply, and household income were predictor variables of the number of new cases of microcephaly in Paraíba. Conclusion Microcephaly is associated with indicators of social inequality in Paraíba. Zika virus cases, water supply, and family income are the indicators that best explain the increase in microcephaly cases. Therefore, these variables must be monitored by health professionals and authorities.

ABSTRACT This study aimed at investigating the effects of nasal cleansing and massage maneuvers on upper airway patency in mouth-breathing children. This is a case report on eight children, aged 7 to 10 years, with a speech-language-hearing diagnosis of mouth breathing and otorhinolaryngological assessment and clinical diagnosis of rhinitis. Nasal airflow and patency were respectively assessed with the Glatzel mirror and Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF). Then, they were submitted to nasal cleansing and massage maneuvers with a saline solution, followed by reassessment with the Glatzel mirror and PNIF to compare results. The medians of total nasal airflow quantification were significant. Data on unilateral nasal cavity measurement indicated a sharp increase in nasal airflow in each nostril, with statistically significant differences between before and after nasal cleansing and massage maneuvers. The medians of the total PNIF were significant after the cleansing. It is concluded that the nasal airflow increased in PNIF after the cleansing maneuver.

ABSTRACT Purpose To carry out an integrative review of the literature on the use of photobiomodulation (PBM) for the head and neck muscles. Research strategy The research took place between June/2019 and March/2021, in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO. The MeSH used were Low-Level Light Therapy, Phototherapy, Masseter Muscle, Masticatory Muscles, Tongue, Palate, Mouth, Neck Muscles, and Facial Muscles in English and Portuguese. No limitation was imposed on the year and language of publication. Selection criteria studies that answered the guiding question: what is the use of photobiomodulation to the head and neck muscles?. Results 2857 articles were found, of which 102 were selected for full reading, 52 of those were excluded, giving a total of 50 articles included. The included publications date from 2003 to 2020. Brazil was the country that most published on the topic. With regard to the objectives, 82% of the studies aimed to investigate the analgesic effect of PBM, of these, 50% were related to articular or muscular temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The heterogeneity of the studies makes it impossible to define the dose protocols. Conclusion PBM has been applied to the head and neck muscles mainly for the treatment of pain caused by TMD. There is no treatment protocol to define the doses to be used, due the heterogeneity of the methodologies applied and results found.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate what effects lingual frenotomy has on breastfeeding. Methods: based on the research question - “Is there a relationship between the improvement in breastfeeding and the lingual frenotomy?” -, a bibliographical survey was carried out in three databases, using the following descriptors: ankyloglossia, lingual frenum, breastfeeding and frenotomy. Frenotomy is a free term. Original articles with babies up to 6 months old who had difficulties breastfeeding due to ankyloglossia and who had been submitted to lingual frenotomy were chosen. An instrument was developed, containing the following information: name of the authors, year of publication, country of origin, the objective of the study, type of study, sample, main results, and conclusion. Literature Review: of the 243 articles screened, four met the inclusion criteria for this study. It was observed that, after lingual frenotomy, some changes may take place in breastfeeding patterns, such as an increase in the number of suctions and a decrease in the time of pause in between series of suctions. Conclusion: the lingual frenotomy can be an important procedure in the treatment of babies with ankyloglossia, possibly helping improve the latch and breastfeeding.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare nasal geometry between two groups of patients with different degrees of obstructive sleep apnea and to correlate apnea-hypopnea index, apnea severity and degree of daytime sleepiness with nasal areas and volume. Methods: a total of 20 adults (15 women and 5 men, mean age of 52.0±11.4 years old) without nasal obstruction were submitted to polysomnography. The subjects were divided into two groups: a) 10 individuals without apnea or with mild-grade apnea; b) 10 with moderate or severe apnea. Nasal geometry was evaluated by acoustic rhinometry. The volume, comprising the distance from the nasal valve to the posterior part of the middle nasal turbinate, and the three sectional areas corresponding to nasal valve, anterior part of the inferior nasal turbinate and posterior part of the inferior nasal turbinate, were considered. The Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, Student’s t tests for independent samples and Spearman’s correlation coefficient were used for the analysis, with a significance level lower than 5%. Results: group 2 presented lower values in the area corresponding to the nasal valve (on the right), and higher values in the nasal turbinate areas. There was no correlation between the drowsiness scale and nasal areas and volumes. Conclusion: the area of the nasal valve was unilaterally smaller in the group with moderate and severe apnea. There was no correlation between volumes and nasal areas and excessive daytime sleepiness.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to evaluate the nutritional status associated with dysphagia, and compare the calorie and protein intake of dysphagic elderly patients to that of non dysphagic ones, during hospitalization. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study with elderly people ranging from 60 to 80 years old admitted as inpatients in a medical and neurological clinic of a public hospital. They formed two groups, according to the presence of dysphagia: dysphagic and non dysphagic ones. The inclusion criteria were: dysphagia secondary to stroke and exclusive oral feeding. Anthropometric measurements and the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were applied. The 24-hour recall was used to analyze food consumption. The statistical analysis used the Fisher's exact test for the association of variables, and the Mann-Whitney test, for their comparison. Results: a total of 12 elderly people participated, whose mean age was 70.50 ± 7.77 years in the dysphagia group (n = 6), and 72.67 ± 5.01 years in the non dysphagia group (n = 6).There was an association between the presence of dysphagia and the risk of malnutrition, according to MNA (p = 0.028). No significant difference in calorie and protein intake was seen between the groups. The group with dysphagia had a lower water intake as compared to the non dysphagia group (p = 0.045). Conclusion: dysphagia was associated with the risk of malnutrition and lower fluid intake in dysphagic patients, thus, increasing their risk of dehydration.

Abstract Introduction The III Brazilian Consensus on Rhinitis (2012) defines allergic rhinitis as a nasal mucosa inflammation, mediated by immunoglobulin E, after exposure to allergens. The classic signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis are nasal obstruction, watery rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal itching, often reversible either spontaneously or with treatment, and mouth breathing (breathing predominantly through the mouth, regardless of the cause, due to a nasal breathing impairment) in some cases. Objective To evaluate the literature on masticatory changes in children with mouth breathing due to allergic rhinitis. Methods We conducted a search of the past 10 years, at Bireme and MEDLINE databases, for articles that covered masticatory changes in children with mouth breathing secondary to allergic rhinitis. Results We found 1,986 articles, including 15 repeated in databases, but only two articles met the inclusion criteria fully. Discussion We found few studies to answer the question raised in this review, and those studies have some methodological limitations. Most articles claimed no have statistically significant differences in masticatory changes in this population. Conclusion A better controlled study (isolating diseases, exposure time), with a larger sample (sample calculation appropriate), would be necessary to examine such changes.

Summary Introduction: Total laryngectomy creates deglutition disorders and causes a decrease in quality of life Aim: To describe the impact of swallowing and quality of life of patients after total laryngectomy. Method: A case series study. Patients completed a Swallowing and Quality of Life questionnaire composed of 44 questions assessing 11 domains related to quality of life (burden, eating duration, eating desire, frequency of symptoms, food selection, communication, fear, mental health, social functioning, sleep, and fatigue). The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency and variability. Results: The sample comprised 15 patients who underwent total laryngectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy. Of these, 66.7% classified their health as good and 73% reported no restrictions on food consistency. The domains “communication” and “fear” represented severe impact and “eating duration” represented moderate impact on quality of life. The items with lower scores were: longer time to eat than others (domain “eating duration”), cough and cough to remove the liquid or food of the mouth when they are stopped (domain “symptom frequency”), difficulties in understanding (domain “communication”) and fear of choking and having pneumonia (domain “fear”). Conclusion: After total laryngectomy, patients report that swallowing issues have moderate to severe impact in “communication,” “fear,” and “eating duration” domains.

The chewing, a complex action controlled by the central nervous system, is one of the most important functions of the Stomatognathic System. During this action, the electrical activity of the masticatory muscles may be quantified using a surface electromyography. In order to systematically review the literature, on the methods and foods used in EMGS masseter muscle during mastication, we carried out a search in the databases SciELO, Brazil, Lilacs and Medline / Pubmed, from September to October 2009. We included population-based studies and excluded review studies without clear methodological definition and studies with children, adolescents and elderly. About 657 articles were found at the intersection of the following descriptors and their corresponding in English: chewing and masseter and electromyography, which 12 of them selected. It was found that the methods involved in the execution of surface electromyography of the masseter muscle during mastication, vary according to each author, and there is no standard for a specific food in order to perform the examination.

Summary Introduction: The prevalence of asthma has grown considerably in recent decades, but some studies have shown stabilization of this trend. The masticatory process of asthmatic children may be altered due to asthma-related anatomo-functional changes. Objective: The study objective was to determine the clinical and electromyographic characteristics of the masticatory process in asthmatic children and compare the electrical activities of their masseter and anterior temporal muscles (at rest and during maximal voluntary contraction and mastication) with those of non-asthmatic children. Method: Case study. Asthmatic and non-asthmatic groups, each consisting of 30 children of both sexes between 6 and 10 years of age, were evaluated. Mastication was evaluated clinically and electromyographically in all subjects. RESULTS: The masticatory process did not differ significantly between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children. Conclusion: Although the masticatory process did not differ significantly between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children, the masticatory process of asthmatic children may be altered because of anatomical changes of Asthma.

A duração da contração muscular não diferiu significativamente entre os sujeitos com doença de Parkinson e idosos sem doença neurológica e foi menor para a consistência líquida.PURPOSE: to investigate differences between electromyographic samples of right and left suprahyoid muscles during deglutition of thickened liquids and liquid consistencies by elderly people with Parkinson disease and elderly people without any neurological disease. METHODS: 30 subjects, from both genders, took part in this study. Fifteen were elderly without neurological disease whereas the others showed Parkinson disease. All of them were submitted to a clinical evaluation protocol and surface electromyography. RESULTS: significant amplitude difference was found between subjects (f=14.4 and p=0.000) and between sides (t=4,4 and p=0.0037). As for muscular contraction time, the differences were just significant between the consistencies (f=8.2 and p=0.005). CONCLUSION: the electromyographic amplitude was shorter for subjects with Parkinson disease and this amplitude was higher in both groups at the right side. The duration of the muscular contraction did not display significant difference between the subjects with Parkinson disease and elderly without neurological disease. This duration was shorter during the deglutition of liquid consistencies.

METHODS: 34 aged people, of both genders, being 15 feminine and 19 masculine, with ages ranging from 65 to 88 years, took part in the study. Interviews were carried through containing questions for the aged people on general health and feeding and speech therapy evaluations were performed in order to characterize functions of chew, deglutition and speech. RESULTS: as for chew, it was observed that the majority of aged people showed an adapted chew, with exaggerated participation of perioral muscles, heaves of jaw and predominant chew standard was bilateral simultaneous. As for deglutition, it was observed that this function as well as chew were an adapted form into the majority of volunteers majority, we also observed the occurrence of exaggerated participation of perioral muscles and noise during deglutition. In speech evaluation we noted that in more than 50% of the aged people, there was great air escape occurring during speaks, as well as a rise of reduced larynx and the presence of substitution, omission, distortion and imprecision. CONCLUSION: it was observed that aged people get adaptations during chew process in order to keep their possible diet next to when they were young. It was also noted that the studied aged people carry through some compensations during deglutition. The found speech characteristics do not limit severely aged people communication currently. It was still possible to observe that attendance to aged people needed to be carried through by an interdisciplinary team and that speech therapist can and must be part of this team assisting in preventing and/or rehabilitating issues related to stomatognathic functions.

CONCLUSÃO: esses resultados sugerem a importância da fonoterapia em indivíduos portadores de afasia e do exame de PEALL no acompanhamento da evolução clínica.PURPOSE: to report the test results for evoked potential auditory of long latency (PEALL) and the language evaluation of a patient with aphasia. METHODS: a man volunteer that suffered a cortical injury in the left frontal area for 20 months took part in a speech therapy for 4 months and was submitted to PEALL examination in the pre and post treatment. RESULTS: the evaluation of the language showed 64.94% of hits with regards to the total of points, showing better performance in the activity of understanding/expression as for the verbal language, however, with more difficulty in organizing the written language. As for the evaluation of N2, a delay was observed in the right cerebral hemisphere (HR) and left hemisphere (HL). The amplitude of N2 diminished in both hemispheres. The latency of P3 was delayed in HL. For the amplitude P3, one observed increased values in HL. The improvement observed in the components N2 and P3 in the examination after treatment, is possibly due to influence of stimulation of speech exercises. CONCLUSION: these results suggest the importance of speech therapy in individuals with aphasia and the examination of PEALL in the follow-up of clinical evolution.

ABSTRACT Objetive: to identify, in the literature, studies that address the use of motor imagery of swallowing. Methods: a systematic review in SCOPUS databases, Science Direct and Medline, with descriptors and free terms "Motor Imagery"; "Swallow"; "Feeding"; "Stomatognathic System"; "mastication ", "Chew "; "Deglutition "; "Deglutition Disorders "; and "Mental Practice". Original articles using the motor imagery of swallowing were included, while reviews were excluded. For data analysis, at the first and second steps, the reading of titles and abstracts of the studies was carried out. In the third step, all studies that were not excluded were read in full. Results: four manuscripts were selected. The use of motor imagery in the rehabilitation of swallowing shows to be a recent proposal (2014-2015). The sample was reduced and comprised mainly healthy individuals. The EMG of the supra-hyoid muscles was used in two manuscripts. The most used neuroimaging technique was the Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, demonstrating the occurrence of hemodynamic changes during motor imagery and motor execution of swallowing. Conclusion: the motor imagery produces brain response in the motor area of the brain, suggesting that mentalization of actions related to swallowing is effective. However, further studies are needed for the application of this approach in the swallowing rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT Objective: to verify if the chewing side preference interferes in the postural muscular electrical potential. Methods: fifty-five volunteers (41 women and 14 men; average age of 26 years) were evaluated by Odontology (determining the type of dental occlusion), by a speech therapist (determining the chewing side preference) and by a physiotherapist (evaluating the postural muscular electrical potential). The three professionals had no communication regarding the evaluations, in order to keep the study partially blind. For chewing preference electrognatography was used for muscles: sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezium, gluteus medius and tibialis anterior, bilaterally, in static orthostatic posture. Results: there was statistical significance for the muscular electrical potential of the sternocleidomastoid and anterior tibial, when there was right chewing preference (p=0.030 for both) and left chewing preference (p=0.0028 and p=0.0020, respectively). In alternate bilateral chewing there was tendency to symmetry of postural muscular electrical activation, in all muscles. Conclusion: there was presence of asymmetry of postural muscular electrical activation in the sternocleidomastoid and tibialis anterior, when chewing side preference was at right or left. In the presence of alternate bilateral mastication, there was tendency of symmetry of postural muscular electrical activation for all studied musculatures.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to correlate the electrical activity of the suprahyoid musculature and tongue pressure during swallowing, in the elderly. Methods: thirteen elderly aged from 60 to 80 years participated in this study. They were submitted to electromyographic assessment and tongue pressure measurement while swallowing. After the evaluation, the relationship between suprahyoid musculature activity and tongue pressure during swallowing was verified. To obtain the electrical signal, surface electromyography was used and electrodes were placed in the submental region. They swallowed saliva and held the tongue against the palate for three seconds to record the maximum voluntary contraction, as well as saliva, and then, 50ml of water for the electromyographic recording. Tongue pressure was measured using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument during swallowing of 10ml of water. Swallowing was performed with a bulb positioned between the dorsum of the tongue and the hard palate. Statistical analysis was carried out by using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Results: there was a relationship between the electrical activity of the suprahyoid musculature and tongue pressure, during water swallowing (p=0.093%), showing an increase in the maximum tongue pressure level as the electrical activity increased, while swallowing. Conclusion: the values of tongue pressure and electrical activity of the suprahyoid musculature are related when swallowing in the presence of a greater volume of liquid to be swallowed.

Purpose To analyze the effects of lingual frenotomy on the breastfeeding of infants, based on the electrical activity of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles and assessment of the breastfeeding.

Purpose: To carry out an integrative review of the literature on the use of photobiomodulation (PBM) for the head and neck muscles. Research strategy: The research took place between June/2019 and March/2021, in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO. Selection criteria: studies that answered the guiding question: what is the use of photobiomodulation to the head and neck muscles?. Results: 2857 articles were found, of which 102 were selected for full reading, 52 of those were excluded, giving a total of 50 articles included. Conclusion: PBM has been applied to the head and neck muscles mainly for the treatment of pain caused by TMD. There is no treatment protocol to define the doses to be used, due the heterogeneity of the methodologies applied and results found. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Purpose: to compare nasal geometry between two groups of patients with different degrees of obstructive sleep apnea and to correlate apnea-hypopnea index, apnea severity and degree of daytime sleepiness with nasal areas and volume.

Introduction: Taste is of great importance for the feeding process. Seen in this light, it is essential to investigate this sense in children as developing human beings. However, despite little variation in the use of tests that measure the gustatory capacity, there are still questions about the applicability and effective use of tools for quantitative assessment in children. Objective: To search the literature on quantitative instruments used for the evaluation of taste used in studies with children. Methods: A search was conducted in the PUBMED and Web of Science platforms, and subsequently, the identified articles were selected and reviewed. The descriptors and terms used were "taste," "child," "assessment," "diagnosis," and "dysgeusia". Original articles related to the theme in English, restricted to children and with no year limitation, were selected. Studies conducted in other stages of human development, exclusively or concurrently with the pediatric population; animal studies; literature review articles; dissertations and book chapters; and case studies and editorials were excluded. The data analysis was performed through a cataloging protocol created for this study, including the following points: author, research department, year, location, population/sample, age, purpose of the study, methods, and primary results. Results: 5613 items were found. 5307 were excluded based on title, 248 by abstract analysis, and 43 by full text evaluation. Fifteen articles were selected for analysis; of these, six were repeated articles, and thus nine articles were selected for review. Conclusion: The tests aiming at evaluation of taste were judiciously used, ensuring reliability for future research, which may employ methods similar to previous studies.

Summary Introduction: Changes in the respiratory system of asthmatics are also due to the mechanical disadvantage caused by the increased airway resistance. Objective: The study aims to evaluate the respiratory muscle strength and nutritional status of asthmatic children. Method: This is a prospective descriptive and transversal study with 50 children aged 7 to 12 years, who were placed into 2 groups, asthmatic and non-asthmatic. Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated on the basis of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP). The nutritional status was evaluated by measuring the anthropometric data, including height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). The findings were subjected to analysis of variance, chi-square, and Student's t test, and p-values

Rev Port Pneumol 2010; XVI (4): 617-626 Abstract: Introduction: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of high prevalence, considered a public health problem and is thought to be one cause of low birth weight and growth retardation. Purpose: The purpose of this article was to review in literature the effects of asthma on the nutritional status in children. Material and methods: A systematic review was made by searching for articles in PubMed, SciELO and LILACS databases. Review articles, studies with adults or research that did not evaluate the effects of asthma in children were excluded. Hence original articles in humans were included. Results: In the systematic review we found 901 articles in MEDLINE (1966-1996), 47 in LILACS and SciELO in the 16 Brazil, totaling 964 articles. Of these, 17 articles were selected.
