The photoluminescence (PL) intensity is often used as an indicator of the performance of perovskite solar cells and indeed the PL technique is often used for the characterization of these devices and their constituent materials. Herein, a systematic approach is presented to the comparison of the conversion efficiency and the PL intensity of a cell in both open-circuit (OC) and short-circuit (SC) conditions and its application to multiple heterogeneous devices. It is shown that the quenching of the PL observed in SC conditions is a good parameter to assess the device efficiency. The authors explain the dependence of the PL quenching ratio between OC and SC on the cell efficiency with a simple model that is also able to estimate the carrier extraction time of a device.

Space and mirror charge effects in time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy can be modeled to obtain relevant information on the recombination dynamics of charge carriers. We successfully extracted from these phenomena the reneutralization characteristic time of positive charges generated by photoexcitation in CeO2-based films. For the above-band-gap excitation, a large fraction of positive carriers with a lifetime that exceeds 100 ps are generated. Otherwise, the sub-band-gap excitation induces the formation of a significantly smaller fraction of charges with lifetimes of tens of picoseconds, ascribed to the excitation of defect sites or to multiphoton absorption. When the oxide is combined with Ag nanoparticles, the sub-band-gap excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances leads to reneutralization times longer than 300 ps. This was interpreted by considering the electronic unbalance at the surface of the nanoparticles generated by the injection of electrons, via localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) decay, into CeO2. This study represents an example of how to exploit the space charge effect in gaining access to the surface carrier dynamics in CeO2 within the picosecond range of time, which is fundamental to describe the photocatalytic processes.

Zn–salophen complexes are a promising class of fluorescent chemosensors for nucleotides and nucleic acids. We have investigated, by means of steady state UV–Vis, ultrafast transient absorption, fluorescence emission and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) the behavior of the excited states of a salicylidene tetradentate Schiff base (Sal), its Zn(II) coordination compound (Zn–Sal) and the effect of the interaction between Zn–Sal and adenosine diphosphate (ADP). TD-DFT shows that the deactivation of the excited state of Sal occurs through torsional motion, due to its rotatable bonds and twistable angles. Complexation with Zn(II) causes rigidity so that the geometry changes in the excited states with respect to the ground state structure are minimal. By addition of ADP to a freshly prepared Zn–Sal ethanol solution, a longer relaxation constant, in comparison to Zn–Sal, was measured, indicative of the interaction between Zn–Sal and ADP. After a few days, the Zn–Sal–ADP solution displayed the same static and dynamic behavior of a solution containing only the Sal ligand, demonstrating that the coordination of the ADP anion to Zn(II)leads to the demetallation of the Sal ligand. Fluorescence measurements also revealed an enhanced fluorescence at 375 nm following the addition of ADP to the solution, caused by the presence of 2,3-diamino naphthalene that is formed by demetallation and partial decomposition of the Sal ligand. The efficient fluorescence of this species at 375 nm could be selectively detected and used as a probe for the detection of ADP in solution. Graphical abstract

Noble metal nanoparticles exhibit localized plasmon resonance modes that span the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges and have many applications. Modifying the size, shape, and composition of the nanoparticles changes the number of modes and their properties. The characteristics of these modes are transiently affected when illuminating the nano-objects with ultrashort laser pulses. Here, core-shell gold-silver nanocuboids are synthesized and their spectral signature in the stationary and ultrafast transient regimes are measured. Their dipolar transverse mode vanishes with increasing Ag-shell thickness, while higher-order modes grow in the near-ultraviolet range where no plasmon resonance can be generated with single noble metal nanoparticles. These higher-energy modes are associated with sharp spectral variations of the ultrafast transient light extinction by the bimetallic nanocuboids. By carrying out a theoretical investigation, the different contributions to this response are broken down and a physical interpretation of its spectral profile is provided. The transient optical signal is then shown to reveal resonance modes hidden in the stationary regime spectra.

Methanol is one of the most abundant and ubiquitous molecules in the space. Its chemistry is fundamental to understand the molecular growing from prebiotic molecules, ions and radicals. In this work the reaction of labelled methanol CD3OH•+ radical cation, produced with different internal energies by monochromatic synchrotron radiation, with neutral CD3OH was studied. The dynamics of the main reaction channels were investigated by theoretical calculations. The results show how these processes can be considered suitable pathways for the formation of fundamental species as CH3O(H)H+, CH3O•, •CH2OH, CH2O which are potential precursors to prebiotic molecules.

A graphene/Si heterojunction device has been realized to overcome many different requests necessary to make it a versatile, widely used and competitive detector. The obtained photodetectors, which operate at room temperature, are sensitive in the spectral region from ultraviolet (240 nm) to infrared (2000 nm) and they can be used in different configurations that allow a high responsivity up to 107 A W−1, a rise time of a few nanoseconds, an external quantum efficiency greater than 300%, and a linear response for different light sources. This is allowed by the high quality of the graphene deposited on a large area of 8 mm2, and by the interdigitated design of the contacts, both preserving the excellent properties of graphene when switching from nanoscale to macroscopic dimensions of commonly used devices.

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) often present different structural and opto-electronic properties than their thin film counterparts. The thinner they are, the larger these differences are. Here, we present femtosecond transient absorbance measurements on ${\mathrm{GaAs}}_{0.8}{\mathrm{P}}_{0.2}$ NWs of two different diameters, 36 and 51 nm. The results show that thinner NWs sustain a higher carrier temperature for longer times than thicker NWs. This observation suggests that, in thinner NWs, the buildup of a hot-phonon bottleneck is easier than in thicker NWs because of the increased phonon scattering at the NW sidewalls, which facilitates the buildup of a large phonon density. Moreover, the important observation that the carrier temperature in thin NWs is higher than in thick NWs already at the beginning of the hot carrier regime suggests that the phonon-mediated scattering processes in the nonthermal regime play a major role at least for the carrier densities investigated here $(8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{18} \mathrm{to} 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{19}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{\text{--}3}$). Our results also suggest that the phonon scattering at crystal defects is negligible compared with the phonon scattering at the NW sidewalls.

The study of nonthermal electrons, generated upon photoexcitation of plasmonic nanostructures, plays a key role in a variety of contexts, from photocatalysis and energy conversion to photodetection and nonlinear optics. Their ultrafast relaxation and subsequent release of energy to a low energy distribution of thermalized hot electrons has been the subject of a myriad of papers, mostly based on femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (FTAS). However, the FTAS signal stems from a complex interplay of different contributions arising from both nonthermal and thermal electrons, making the disentanglement of the two a very challenging task, so far accomplished only in terms of numerical simulations. Here a combined approach is introduced, based on a post-processing of the FTAS measurements guided by a reduced semiclassical model, the so-called extended two-temperature model, which has allowed the purely nonthermal contribution to the pump-probe experimental map recorded for 2D arrays of gold nanoellipsoids to be isolated. This approach displays the intimate correlation between electron energy and probe photon energy on the ultrafast time-scale of electron thermalization. It also sheds new light on the ultrafast transient optical response of gold nanostructures, and will help the development of optimized plasmonic configurations for nonthermal electrons generation and harvesting.

A new fabrication process is developed for growing Bi2Se3 topological insulators in the form of nanowires/nanobelts and ultra-thin films. It consists of two consecutive procedures: first Bi2Se3 nanowires/nanobelts are deposited by standard catalyst free vapour-solid deposition on different substrates positioned inside a quartz tube. Then, the Bi2Se3, stuck on the inner surface of the quartz tube, is re-evaporated and deposited in the form of ultra-thin films on new substrates at temperature below 100 {\deg}C, which is of relevance for flexible electronic applications. The method is new, quick, very inexpensive, easy to control and allows obtaining films with different thickness down to one quintuple layer (QL) during the same procedure. The composition and the crystal structure of both the nanowires/nanobelts and the thin films is analysed by different optical, electronic and structural techniques. For the films, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy shows that the Fermi level is positioned in the middle of the energy bandgap as a consequence of the achieved correct stoichiometry. Ultra-thin films, with thickness in the range 1-10 QLs deposited on n-doped Si substrates, show good rectified properties suitable for their use as photodetectors in the ultra violet-visible-near infrared wavelength range, Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, paper

The photofragmentation of the isoxazole molecules producing ionized atomic and molecular fragments was investigated in the photon energy range of 9–32 eV, using synchrotron radiation excitation combined with ion time-of-flight spectrometry. Twenty-one well resolved cations were identified in the mass spectra of the isoxazole, and their appearance energies were determined. The yield curves of these cations were obtained in the photon energy ranges from their appearance energies up to 32 eV. Moreover, the total ion yield of isoxazole was recorded with high precision in the photon energy range of 9.9–10.5 eV. This allowed the determination of the adiabatic ionization energy of 9.96 (0.02) eV in excellent agreement with earlier spectroscopic studies. Our results show that the dissociative ionization of isoxazole starts from the ring-opening and isomerization of isoxazole, and further it follows strictly through its ionic states. Possible ionic fragmentation channels yielding particular ions are discussed.

In this work we show how the optical properties of ZnSe nanowires are modified by the presence of Ag nanoparticles on the sidewalls of the ZnSe nanowires. In particular, we show that the low-temperature luminescence of the ZnSe nanowires changes its shape, enhancing the phonon replicas of impurity-related recombination and affecting rise and decay times of the transient absorption bleaching at room temperatures, with an increase of the former and a decrease of the latter. In contrast, the deposition of Au nanoparticles on ZnSe nanowires does not change the optical properties of the sample. We suggest that the mechanism underlying these experimental observations is energy transfer via a resonant interaction, based on the fact that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles spectrally overlaps with absorption and emission of ZnSe, while the Au LSPR does not.

Dihalomethanes XCH2Y (X and Y = F, Cl, Br, and I) are a class of compounds involved in several processes leading to the release of halogen atoms, ozone consumption, and aerosol particle formation. Neutral dihalomethanes have been largely studied, but chemical physics properties and processes involving their radical ions, like the pathways of their decomposition, have not been completely investigated. In this work the photodissociation dynamics of the ClCH2I molecule has been explored in the photon energy range 9-21 eV using both VUV rare gas discharge lamps and synchrotron radiation. The experiments show that, among the different fragment ions, CH2I+ and CH2Cl+, which correspond to the Cl- and I-losses, respectively, play a dominant role. The experimental ionization energy of ClCH2I and the appearance energies of the CH2I+ and CH2Cl+ ions are in agreement with the theoretical results obtained at the MP2/CCSD(T) level of theory. Computational investigations have been also performed to study the isomerization of geminal [ClCH2I]o+ into the iso-chloroiodomethane isomers: [CH2I-Cl]o+ and [CH2Cl-I]o+.

Ultrafast optical reflectivity measurements of silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide have been carried out using an advanced set-up providing intense subpicosecond pulses (35 fs FWHM, $$\lambda $$ λ = 400 nm) as a pump and broadband 340–780 nm ultrafast pulses as a white supercontinuum probe. Measurements have been performed for selected pump fluence conditions below the damage thresholds, that were carefully characterized. The obtained fluence damage thresholds are 30, 20.8, 9.6 mJ/$$\hbox {cm}^2$$ cm 2 for Si, Ge and GaAs respectively. Ultrafast reflectivity patterns show clear differences in the Si, Ge, and GaAs trends both for the wavelength and time dependences. Important changes were observed near the wavelength regions corresponding to the $$E_1$$ E 1 , $$E_1+\Delta $$ E 1 + Δ singularities in the joint density of states, so related to the peculiar band structure of the three systems. For Ge, ultrafast reflectivity spectra were also collected at low temperature (down to 80 K) showing a shift of the characteristic doublet peak around 2.23 eV and a reduction of the recovery times.

The valence and core-level photoelectron spectra of gaseous indole, 2,3-dihydro-7-azaindole, and 3-formylindole have been investigated using VUV and soft X-ray radiation supported by both an ab initio electron propagator and density functional theory calculations. Three methods were used to calculate the outer valence band photoemission spectra: outer valence Green function, partial third order, and renormalized partial third order. While all gave an acceptable description of the valence spectra, the last method yielded very accurate agreement, especially for indole and 3-formylindole. The carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen is core-level spectra of these heterocycles were measured and assigned. The double ionization appearance potential for indole has been determined to be 21.8 +/- 0.2 eV by C is and N is Auger photoelectron spectroscopy. Theoretical analysis identifies the doubly ionized states as a band consisting of two overlapping singlet states and one triplet state with dominant configurations corresponding to holes in the two uppermost molecular orbitals. One of the singlet states and the triplet state can be described as consisting largely of a single configuration, but other doubly ionized states are heavily mixed by configuration interactions. This work provides full assignment of the relative binding energies of the core level features and an analysis of the electronic structure of substituted indoles in comparison with the parent indole.

Light absorption and charge transport in oxide semiconductors can be tuned by the introduction, during deposition, of a small quantity of foreign elements, leading to the improvement of the photoelectrocatalytic performance. In this work, both unmodified and vanadium-modified TiO2 thin films deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering are investigated as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Following a structural characterization by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoelectrocatalysis is discussed based on ultrafast transient absorbance spectroscopy measurements. In particular, three different pump wavelengths from UV to the visible range are used (300, 390, and 530 nm) in order to cover the relevant photoactive spectral range of modified TiO2. Incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency spectra show that incorporation of vanadium in TiO2 extends water splitting in the visible range up to approximate to 530 nm, a significant improvement compared to unmodified TiO2 that is active only in the UV range less than or similar to 390 nm. However, transient absorbance spectroscopy clearly reveals that vanadium accelerates electron-hole recombination upon UV irradiation, resulting in a lower photon-to-current conversion efficiency in the UV spectral range with respect to unmodified TiO2. The new photoelectrocatalytic activity in the visible range is attributed to a V-induced introduction of intragap levels at approximate to 2.2 eV below the bottom of the conduction band. This is confirmed by long-living transient signals due to electrons photoexcited into the conduction band after visible light (530 nm) pulses. The remaining holes migrate to the semiconductor-electrolyte interface where they are captured by long-lived traps and eventually promote water oxidation under visible light.

Upon photoexcitation with a femtosecond laser pulse, the plasmonic resonance of a nanorod can couple with coherent vibrational modes generating a regular oscillating pattern in the transient absorbance of the nanostructure. The dynamics of the plasmon resonances of these materials are probed through femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the spectral region between 400 nm and 1600 nm. Whereas in the visible range the spectra are comparable with the findings reported in the literature, the analysis of the transient NIR spectra revealed that their oscillation frequencies vary with wavelength, resulting in a strong distortion of the transient features that can be related to the specific lengths distribution of the nanorods contained in the sample. These findings suggest that in the design of efficient and highly sensitive gold-nanorod based plasmonic sensors a narrow size distribution of nanostructures is required.

The excitation of plasmonic nanoparticles by ultrashort laser pulses sets in motion a complex ultrafast relaxation process involving the gradual re-equilibration of the system's electron gas, lattice, and environment. One of the major hurdles in studying these processes is the lack of direct measurements of the dynamic temperature evolution of the system subcomponents. We measured the dynamic optical response of ensembles of plasmonic Au nanoparticles following ultra-short-pulse excitation, and we compared it with the corresponding static optical response as a function of the increasing temperature of the thermodynamic bath. Evaluating the two sets of data, the optical fingerprints of equilibrium or off-equilibrium responses could be clearly identified, allowing us to extract a dynamic thermometric calibration scale of the relaxation process, yielding the experimental ultrafast temperature evolution of the plasmonic particles as a function of time.

The knowledge of the carrier dynamics in nanostructures is of fundamental importance for the development of (opto)electronic devices. This is true for semiconducting nanostructures as well as for plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs). Indeed, improvement of photocatalytic efficiencies by combining semiconductor and plasmonic nanostructures is one of the reasons why their ultrafast dynamics are intensively studied. In this work, we will review our activity on ultrafast spectroscopy in nanostructures carried out in the recently established EuroFEL Support Laboratory. We have investigated the dynamical plasmonic responses of metal NPs both in solution and in 2D and 3D arrays on surfaces, with particular attention being paid to the effects of the nanoparticle shape and to the conversion of absorbed light into heat on a nano-localized scale. We will summarize the results obtained on the carrier dynamics in nanostructured perovskites with emphasis on the hot-carrier dynamics and in semiconductor nanosystems such as ZnSe and Si nanowires, with particular attention to the band-gap bleaching dynamics. Subsequently, the study of semiconductor-metal NP hybrids, such as CeO$_2$-Ag NPs, ZnSe-Ag NPs and ZnSe-Au NPs, allows the discussion of interaction mechanisms such as charge carrier transfer and F{\"o}rster interaction. Finally, we assess an alternative method for the sensitization of wide band gap semiconductors to visible light by discussing the relationship between the carrier dynamics of TiO$_2$ NPs and V-doped TiO$_2$ NPs and their catalytic properties., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, review type article

We investigated the effects of ultrafast laser excitation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) having strong interparticle electromagnetic coupling by irradiating the NPs either at interband or plasmon-resonance wavelengths (13-100 J/m(2) fluence regime). We observed that interband excitation is significantly more efficient than plasmonic excitation in reshaping, coalescing, and ultimately sublimating the NPs, despite the light-absorption cross section of interband excitation being almost half that of plasmonic irradiation. We ascribed this to the different localizations of radiation-induced heat sources in the strongly coupled NPs in the two cases. Interband excitation induces homogeneous heat generation in Au, and so the conventional NP heating pathway is followed, eventually leading to overall melting, coalescence, and ablation of Au. Plasmonic irradiation, on the other hand, promotes strong localization of the heat sources within small energetic hot spots, a fact that we suggest may lead to nonthermal effects that melt and reshape the NPs only on the local scale, leaving the system otherwise relatively unscathed.

Hot-carriers, that is, charge carriers with an effective temperature higher than that of the lattice, may contribute to the high power conversion efficiency (PCE) shown by perovskite-based solar cells (PSCs), which are now competitive with silicon solar cells. Hot-carriers lose their excess energy in very short times, typically in a few picoseconds after excitation. For this reason, the carrier dynamics occurring on this time scale are extremely important in determining the participation of hot-carriers in the photovoltaic process. However, the stability of PSCs over time still remains an issue that calls for a solution. In this work, we demonstrate that the insertion of graphene flakes into the mesoscopic TiO2 scaffold leads to stable values of carrier temperature. In PSCs aged over 1 week, we indeed observe that in the graphene-free perovskite cells the carrier temperature decreases by about 500 K from 1800 to 1300 K, while the graphene-containing cell shows a reduction of less than 200 K after the same aging time delay. The stability of the carrier temperature reflects the stability of the perovskite nanocrystals embedded in the mesoporous graphene-TiO2 layer. Our results, based on femtosecond transient absorption measurements, show that the insertion of graphene can be beneficial for the design of stable PSCs with the aim of exploiting the hot-carrier contribution to the PCE of the PSCs.

Photodetectors (PDs) based on single-walled carbon nanotube film/silicon and graphene/silicon heterojunctions have been realized for fast applications. We investigated the response of the PDs to femtosecond pulsed laser using a three-electrode configuration for photoconductive operations. Both junction PDs exhibit rise times of some nanoseconds, detecting light from ultraviolet (275[Formula: see text]nm) to infrared (1150[Formula: see text]nm). Applying a gate voltage [Formula: see text], the rise time decreases down to about 1[Formula: see text]ns, making our devices comparable to most commercial PDs.

The coupling with plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs) represents a promising opportunity to sensitize wide band gap oxides to visible light. The processes which come into play after the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in the NPs largely determine the efficiency of the charge/ energy transfer from the metal NP to the oxide. We report a study of plasmon-mediated energy transfer from mass-selected silver NPs into the cerium oxide matrix in which they are embedded. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is used to probe the dynamics of charge carrier relaxation after the excitation of the LSPR of the silver nanoparticles and to evaluate the plasmon-mediated electron transfer efficiency from the silver nanoparticles to the cerium oxide. High injection efficiencies in the 6-16% range have been identified for excitation between 400 and 600 nm. These high values have been explained in terms of plasmon-mediated direct electron injection as well as indirect hot electron injection from the NPs to the oxide. The information obtained provides an important contribution towards a knowledge- driven design of efficient cerium oxide based nanostructured materials for solar to chemical energy conversion.

In this work, we show how to control the morphology of femtosecond laser melted gold nanosphere aggregates. A careful choice of both laser fluence and wavelength makes it possible to selectively excite different aggregate substructures to produce larger spherical nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanoprisms or necklace-like 1D nanostructures in which the nanoparticles are interlinked by bridges. Finite integral technique calculations have been performed on the near-field concentration of light in the nanostructures which confirm the wavelength dependence of the light concentration and suggest that the resulting localized high intensities lead to nonthermal melting. We show that by tuning the wavelength of the melting light it is possible to choose the spatial extension of the ensembles of NPs heated thus allowing us to exhibit control over the morphology of the nanostructures formed by the melting process. By a proper combination of this method with self-assembly of chemically synthesized nanoparticles, one can envisage the development of an innovative high-throughput high-resolution nanofabrication technique.

Vanadium-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (V-TiO2 NPs) with a V/Ti ratio of 3.0 at. % were prepared by gas-phase condensation and subsequent oxidation at elevated temperature. Both photocatalytic activity for -NO2 reduction and photoelectrochemical water splitting were induced by V-doping in the visible spectral range lambda > 450 nm, where undoped TiO2 NPs are completely inactive. The photocatalytic properties were correlated with the ultrafast dynamics of the photoexcited charge carriers studied by femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy with three different excitation wavelengths, i.e. lambda(e) = 330, 400, and 530 nm. Only in V-doped NPs, the photoexcitation of electrons into the conduction band by sub-bandgap irradiation (lambda(e) = 530 nm) was detected by TA spectroscopy. This observation was associated with electronic transitions from an infra-gap level localized on V4+ cations. The photoexcited electrons subsequently relaxed, with characteristic times of 200-500 ps depending on lambda(e), into Ti-related surface traps that possessed suitable energy to promote -NO2 reduction. The photoexcited holes migrated to long-lived surface traps with sufficient overpotential for the oxidization of both 2-propanol and water. On the basis of TA spectroscopy and photocurrent measurements, the position of the dopant-induced infra-gap level was estimated as 2.2 eV below the conduction band minimum.

The insertion of a DNA nanolayer into polymer based solar cells, between the electron transport layer (ETL) and the active material, is proposed to improve the charge separation efficiency. Complete bulk heterojunction donor–acceptor solar cells of the layered type glass/electrode (indium tin oxide)/ETL/P3HT:PC70BM/hole transport layer/electrode (Ag) are investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy both in the NIR and the UV–vis regions of the spectrum. The transient spectral changes indicate that when the DNA is deposited on the ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO‐NPs) it can imprint a different long range order on the poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) polymer with respect to the non‐ZnO‐NPs/DNA containing cells. This leads to a larger delocalization of the initially formed exciton and its faster quenching which is attributed to more efficient exciton dissociation. Propylene oxide, a favorite target of experimental and theoretical studies of circular dichroism, was recently discovered in interstellar space, further amplifying the attention to its role in the current debate on protobiological homochirality. In the present work, a photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence technique, using an ion-imaging detector and tunable synchrotron radiation in the 18.0-37.0 eV energy range, permits: (i)-to observe six double-ionization fragmentation channels, their relative yields being accounted for about two-thirds by the couple (C2H4+, CH2O+), one-fifth by (C2H3+, CH3O+); (ii)-to measure thresholds for their openings as a function of photon energy; (iii)-to unravel a pronounced bimodality for a kinetic-energy-released distribution, fingerprint of competitive non-adiabatic mechanisms., 27 pages, 6 figures

We present stationary and transient absorption measurements on 3D Au nanoparticle (NP)-decorated $\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ nanowire arrays. The 3D NP array has been produced by the dewetting of a thin Au film deposited on silica nanowires produced by oxidation of silicon nanowires. The experimental behaviors of the spectral and temporal dynamics observed in the experiment are accurately described by a two-step, three-temperature model. Using an arbitrary set of Au NPs with different aspect ratios, we demonstrate that the width of the experimental spectra, the energy shift of their position with time, and the asymmetry between the two positive wings in the dynamical variation of absorption can all be attributed to the nonuniform shape distribution of the Au NPs in the sample.

Nitromidazoles are relevant compounds of multidisciplinary interest, and knowledge of their physical chemical parameters as well as their decomposition under photon irradiation is needed. Here we report an experimental and theoretical study of the mechanisms of VUV photo fragmentation of 2- and 4(5)-nitromidazoles, compounds used as radiosensitizers in conjunction with radiotherapy as well as high-energy density materials. Photoelectron photoion coincidence experiments, measurements of the appearance energies of the most important ionic fragments, density functional theory, and single-point coupled cluster calculations have been used to provide an overall insight into the energetics and structure of the different ionic/neutral products of the fragmentation processes. The results show that these compounds can be an efficient source of relevant CO, HCN, NO, and NO2 molecules and produce ions of particular astrophysical interest, like the isomers of azirinyl cation (m/z 40), predicted to exist in the interstellar medium, and protonated hydrogen cyanide (m/z 28).

Spectroscopies based on circular polarized light are sensitive to the electronic and structural properties of chiral molecules. Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a powerful technique that combines the chiral sensitivity of the circular polarized light and the electronic information obtained by photoelectron spectroscopy. An experimental and theoretical PECD study of the outer valence and C 1s core states of 1-amino-2-propanol in the gas phase is presented. The experimental dichroic dispersions in the photoelectron kinetic energy are compared with theoretical calculations employing a multicentric basis set of B-spline functions and a Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. In order to understand analogies and differences in the dichroism of structural isomers bearing the same functional groups, a comparison with previous PECD study of valence band of 2-amino-1-propanol is carried out.

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the carrier dynamics and optical properties of ZnSe nanowires (NWs). The transparency of the sample, obtained by the growth of the ZnSe NWs on glass, allowed us to perform transmittance, reflectance, photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL, and pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy on as-grown samples. All measurements were performed at room temperature. Strong light trapping at the band-gap energy has been observed in reflectivity measurements. Fast transient absorption bleaching due to band filling and band-gap renormalization has been observed. The band-gap renormalization has a rise time constant of about 170 fs and a decay time of about 4 ps. Fast transient absorption bleaching is also observed at energies below the band gap, suggesting that intrinsic processes prevail over extrinsic photoinduced transitions in our high-quality NWs. The PL reveals the presence at room temperature of excitonic emission that shows a decay time of 0.5 ns. All of these features indicate that our ZnSe NWs have quality comparable to epitaxial films and can be used for optical devices and nonlinear optics.

A study of (R)-3-methylcyclopentanone [(R)-3-MCP] by photoelectron spectroscopy and photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is presented. The synchrotron radiation gas-phase photoelectron spectra of (R)-3-MCP were measured and are discussed on the basis of different theoretical methodologies. The experimental dichroism of (R)-3-MCP for selected deconvoluted valence states and for the carbonyl carbon 1s core state are reported and reproduced well by calculated dispersions generated by considering the contributions of two different conformers. The theoretical dichroic parameters are calculated by employing a multicentre basis set of B-spline functions and a Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. Temperature-dependent PECD studies of the HOMO state and the carbonyl carbon 1s core level allowed the separation of the contributions of each conformer by photoelectron dichroism. This new approach clearly shows how the PECD methodology is sensitive to conformational and structural changes of unoriented (R)-3-MCP in the gas phase, opening up new perspectives in the characterisation of chiral molecular systems. Dichroism and conformers: Temperature-dependent photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) studies of the HOMO state and the carbonyl carbon 1s core level of R-3-methylcyclopentanone (R-3-MCP) allowed to separate the contributions of each conformer, showing how the PECD methodology can be sensitive to the conformational and structural changes of unoriented chiral molecules. The chemical physics of halomethanes is an important and challenging topic in several areas of chemistry in particular in the chemistry of the atmosphere. Among the class of halomethanes, the diiodomethane molecule has attracted some interest in the last years, but despite this, the information on its radical cation [CH2I2](⋅+) is still limited. In this work, we measured and calculated the appearance energy (AE) of the ionic fragments I2(⋅+) and CH2(⋅+) and correlated the different fragmentation channels to the electronic states of the cation via photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) experiments. In the case of the CH2/I2(⋅+) channel, the experimentally determined AE is in excellent agreement with the adiabatic theoretical value while a discrepancy is observed for the CH2(⋅+)/I2 channel. This discrepancy can be understood accounting for a fragmentation involving the formation of two I atoms (CH2(⋅+)/2I channel), which, as explained by time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, occurs when [CH2I2](⋅+) excited states are involved.

Chiral self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) are important for technological and fundamental reasons. In spite of the large number of works in this field, the mechanism of chirality transfer from single molecules to large-scale two-dimensional (2D) networks is not fully understood yet. This work reports on the self-assembly of simple amino alcohols with different chirality measures on Cu(100). Ethanolamine (2-amino-1-ethanol), alaninol (2-amino-1-propanol) and butanolamine (2-amino-1-butanol) adsorbed on Cu(100) have been investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study addresses the role of the single-molecule handedness in the global chirality expression, showing how the chirality measure of the precursors plays an important role in the formation of globally chiral superstructures. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The assembly and the orientation of functionalized pentacene at the interface with inorganics strongly influence both the electric contact and the charge transport in organic electronic devices. In bis(triisopropylsilylethnyl)pentacene (TIPS-Pc) the TIPS functional groups not only improve the solubility in common organic solvents, but also features good transport properties arising from the "brick-wall" face-to-face arrangement of the molecular planes, that increases the intermolecular interactions with respect to the edge-to-face "herringbone" stacking of pentacene. In order to understand and control the assembling of TIPS-Pc on the Au(111) surface, we have combined electronic spectroscopies and theoretical modeling to investigate the properties TIPS-Pc/Au(111) interface as a function of the molecular coverage, to compare the molecular state in the gas- and in the adsorbed-phase and to determine the thermal stability of TIPS-Pc in contact with gold. Our results show that in the free molecule only the acene atoms directly bonded to the ligands are affected by the functionalization. Adsorption on Au(111) leads to a weak coupling which causes only modest binding energy shifts in the TIPS-Pc and substrate core level spectra. In the first monolayer the acene plane form an angle of 33º ± 2º with the Au(111) surface at variance with the vertical geometry reported for thicker solution-processed or evaporated films, whereas the presence of configurational disorder was observed in the multilayer. The thermal annealing of the TIPS-Pc/Au(111) interface reveals the ligand desorption at ~ 470 K, which leaves the backbone of the decomposed molecule flat-lying on the metal surface as in the case of the unmodified pentacene. The weak interaction with the metal substrate causes the molecular dissociation to occur 60 K above the thermal decomposition taking place in thick drop-cast films.

In the present work, we studied the photoinduced ion chemistry of the halogenated pyrimidines, a class of prototype radiosensitizing molecules, in the energy region 9-15 eV. The work was stimulated by previous studies on inner shell site-selective fragmentation of the pyrimidine molecule, which have shown that the fragmentation is governed by the population/formation of specific ionic states with a hole in valence orbitals, which in turn correlate to accessible dissociation limits. The combined experimental and theoretical study of the appearance energies of the main fragments provides information on the geometric structure of the products and on the role played by the specific halogen atom and the site of halogenation in the dissociation process. This information can be used to gain new insights on the elementary mechanisms that could possibly explain the enhanced radiation damage to the DNA bases or to the medium in which the bases are embedded, thereby contributing to their radiosensitizing effect.

A comparison between theoretical and experimental results for the photoelectron intensity and circular dichroism is reported for the valence electron states of the metal complex Delta-Cobalt(III) tris-acetylacetonate. The measured intensities of the valence features and their dichroic behaviour are reproduced in the time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) framework. The satisfactory agreement between theoretical and experimental results in the photon energy range 15-29 eV proves that the TDDFT procedure is suitable for describing electronic processes and circular dichroism.

Molecular fragmentation induced in organic molecules by absorption of VUV and soft X-ray radiation can cause damage on living organisms. In this work, the site-selective molecular fragmentation of pyrimidine and 2Br–pyrimidine has been studied and explained as a combined effect of the selective electron decay of a localised core vacancy and the selective fragmentation of specific valence shell electronic states.

A sizable enhancement of the circular dichroism in photoelectron spectroscopy has been measured and computed for the metal complex $\ensuremath{\Delta}$-cobalt(III) tris-acetylacetonate highest occupied molecular orbital state in the region of the Co $3p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3d$ Fano resonance. In the resonance the dichroism reaches the maximum value of 5% and even changes its sign as compared to the direct photoionization channel. We ascribe this enhancement to electron correlation processes, namely, with the coupling between discrete excitations and the continuum, which is correctly described in the time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) framework. These findings open new physical aspects of photoelectron circular dichroism that now can be interpreted not only via the simple direct ionization, but also through more complex electron correlation processes.

Studies of self-assembled chiral molecules on achiral metallic surfaces have mostly focused on the determination of the geometry of adsorbates and their electronic structure. The aim of this paper is to provide direct information on the chirality character of the system and on the chirality transfer from molecules to substrate by means of circular dichroism in the angular distribution of valence photoelectrons for the extended domain of the chiral self-assembled molecular structure, formed by alaninol adsorbed on Cu(100). We show, by the dichroic behavior of a mixed molecule–copper valence state, that the presence of molecular chiral domains induces asymmetry in the interaction with the substrate and locally transfers the chiral character to the underlying metal atoms participating in the adsorption process; combined information related to the asymmetry of the initial electronic state, which is expected to be chiral, and the final electronic state, which locally probes the asymmetry of the potential, has been obtained. Identification of chirality in the adsorption footprint sheds new light on the transfer of chirality from a chiral modifier to a symmetric metal surface and represents an important aspect for controlling and tuning the functionality of the molecule–metal interfaces. ©2012 American Physical Society

The electronic structure of epichlorohydrin is investigated in the whole valence region by a combined experimental and theoretical study. The issue of controversial assignments of the molecular electronic structure is here addressed. Photoelectron spectra (PES) and Threshold Photoelectron spectra (TPES) of room temperature molecules in the gas phase are recorded. Geometries and energies of the stable conformers due to internal rotation of the C-C-C-Cl dihedral angle, gauche-II (g-II), gauche-I (g-I), and cis, are calculated, and the effect of the conformational flexibility on the photoionization energetics is studied by DFT and 2h-1p Configuration Interaction (CI) methods. Strong breakdown of the Koopmans Theorem (KT) is obtained for the four outermost ionizations, which are further investigated by higher level ab initio calculations. The full assignment of the spectrum is put on a firm basis by the combination of experimental and theoretical results. The orbital composition from correlated calculations is found closer to the DFT orbitals, which are then used to analyze the electronic structure of the molecule. The Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and HOMO--2 are n(O)/n(Cl) mixed orbitals. The nature of each valence MO is generally preserved in all the conformers, although the magnitude of the n(O)/n(Cl) mixing in HOMO and HOMO--2 varies to some extent with the C-C-C-Cl dihedral angle. The low energy part of the HOMO PE band is predicted to be substantially affected by the conformational flexibility, as experimentally observed in the spectra. The rest of the spectrum is described in terms of the dominant conformer g-II, and a good agreement between experiment and theory is found. The inner-valence PE spectrum is characterized by satellite structures, due to electron correlation effects, which are interpreted by means of 2h-1p CI calculations.
