The critical components for applying the correct amount of agrochemicals are fruit tree characteristics such as canopy height, canopy volume, and canopy coverage. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based tree canopy characteristics measurement system was developed using image processing approaches. The UAV captured images using a high-resolution red-green-blue (RGB) camera. A digital surface model (DSM) and a digital terrain model (DTM) were generated from the captured images. A tree canopy height map was generated from the subtraction of DSM and DTM. A total of 24 apple trees were randomly targeted to measure the canopy characteristics. Region of interest (ROI) was generated across the boundary of each targeted tree. The height of all pixels within each ROI was computed separately. The pixel with maximum height was considered as the height of the respective tree. For computing canopy volume, the sum of all pixel heights from individual ROI was multiplied by the square of ground sample distance (GSD) of 5.69 mm·pixel−1. A segmentation method was employed to calculate the canopy coverage of the individual trees. The segmented canopy pixel area was divided by the total pixel area within the ROI. The results showed an average relative error of 0.2 m(6.64%) while comparing automatically measured tree height with ground measurements. For tree canopy volume, a mean absolute error of 0.25 m3 and a root mean square error of 0.33 m3 were achieved. The study estimated the possible agrochemical requirement for spraying the fruit trees, ranging from 0.1 to 0.32 l based on tree canopy volumes. The overall investigations suggest that the UAV-based tree canopy characteristics measurements could be a potential tool to calculate the pesticide requirement for precision spraying applications in tree fruit orchards.

Herein, we present a new method for the calculation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) of rats (named time-weighted SAR) to practically consider the effect of the ever-changing movements of rats on their SARs. First, nine rats in separate cages were recorded for approximately 22 h, and the footage every 1 min was collected to obtain 1,307 still shots per rat. Next, five representative postures, which were classified according to the similarity of the still shots, were selected. Subsequently, the percentage of each posture was calculated by computing the number of still shots classified into the corresponding representative postures. Lastly, we demonstrated that although each rat exhibited relatively different and diverse movements during the observation period, the application of this percentage to the SARs of each posture resulted in very similar SAR levels among the rats. This indicates that the time-weighted SAR can be a suitable parameter for accounting for various behavior patterns of rats, as it can measure the total amount of real RF exposure more precisely and practically.

Precision irrigation with sensors has proven to be effective for water saving in crop production. An Internet of Things (IoT) system is necessary for monitoring real-time data from sensors and automating irrigation systems. Long-range wide-area network (LoRaWAN), a type of low-power wide-area network (LPWAN), is a low-cost and easily implemented IoT system which can be used for precision crop irrigation. In this study, a LoRaWAN based IoT system was developed and evaluated as a precision irrigation tool on fresh-market tomato production in a plasticulture system. Four irrigation scheduling treatments were designed and tested, including irrigation based on crop evapotranspiration (ET), soil matric potential sensors (Watermark 200SS-5) at -60 kPa (MP60) or -40 kPa (MP40), and GesCoN fertigation decision support system (DSS). The treatments were arranged based on a randomized complete block design with four replicates. System feasibility, irrigation water use efficiency (iWUE), and crop yield were evaluated. Throughout the season, the overall water use efficiencies were 22.2, 26.5, 27.9, and 28.4 kg·m−3 for ET, MP60, MP40, and GesCoN, respectively. The results indicated that treatment MP60 and GesCoN had 15.2 and 22.1% higher marketable fruit yield than ET, while, MP40 had 12.5% lower marketable yield compared to ET. Overall, the LoRaWAN-based IoT system performed well in terms of power consumption, communication, sensor reading, and valve control. These results suggested that the IoT system can be implemented for precision and automatic irrigation operations for vegetable and other horticultural crops with enhancing crop's water use efficiency and sustainability.

Abstract Amphibian biodiversity is declining globally, with over 40% of species being considered threatened to become extinct. Crucial to the success of conservation initiatives are a comprehensive understanding of life history and reproductive ecology of target species. Here we provide an overview of the Pseudacris genus, including breeding behaviour, reproduction, development, survival and longevity. We present an updated distribution map of the 18 species found throughout North America. We also summarize the conservation status at the national and subnational (state, provincial, and territorial) levels, in Canada, USA, and Mexico, to evaluate the relationship between life history traits and extinction risk. Results show a high degree of consistency in the life history traits of Pseudacris species considering their relative diversity and wide distribution in North America. However, data are lacking for several species, particularly in the Fat Frog and West Coast clades, causing some uncertainties and discrepancies in the literature. We also found that the most threatened populations of chorus frog were located in the east coast of the USA, potentially as a result of increased levels of anthropogenic disturbance. We suggest that the similarities in life history traits among chorus frog species provides an opportunity for collaboration and united efforts for the conservation of the genus.

Frost is a natural disaster that can cause catastrophic damages in agriculture, while traditional temperature monitoring in orchards has disadvantages such as being imprecise and laborious, which can lead to inadequate or wasteful frost protection treatments. In this article, we presented a heating requirement assessment methodology for frost protection in an apple orchard utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based thermal and RGB cameras. A thermal image stitching algorithm using the BRISK feature was developed for creating georeferenced orchard temperature maps, which attained a sub-centimeter map resolution and a stitching speed of 100 thermal images within 30 s. YOLOv4 classifiers for six apple flower bud growth stages in various network sizes were trained based on 5040 RGB images, and the best model achieved a 71.57% mAP for a test dataset consisted of 360 images. A flower bud mapping algorithm was developed to map classifier detection results into dense growth stage maps utilizing RGB image geoinformation. Heating requirement maps were created using artificial flower bud critical temperatures to simulate orchard heating demands during frost events. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed orchard heating requirement determination methodology, which has the potential to be a critical component of an autonomous, precise frost management system in future studies.

The colonic response to stress is greater in female rats than in male rats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotics in the repeated water avoidance stress (rWAS)-induced colonic microinflammation model of Wistar rats in a sex-specific manner. The three groups (no-stress, WAS, and WAS with probiotics) were exposed to r-WAS for 1 h daily for 10 days, and Lactobacillus farciminis was administered by oral gavage for 10 days to animals in the probiotics group. The visceromotor response (VMR) to colorectal distension (CRD) was assessed using a barostat and noninvasive manometry before and after WAS exposure. Immunohistochemistry for mast cells and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for detection of mucosal cytokines were performed using distal colon tissue after the animals were sacrificed. Significant reduction of VMR to CRD (visceral analgesia) was observed at 60 mmHg in the female WAS group (P = 0.045), but not in males. In addition, the female WAS with probiotics group showed a significantly lower colonic mucosal mast cell count in comparison to the female WAS group (P = 0.013), but this phenomenon was not observed in the male group. The colonic mucosal mRNA levels of interferon-γ (IFNR), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFA), interleukin (IL) 6, and IL17 were higher in the female WAS group than in the male WAS group. The mRNA levels of IFNR, TNFA, and IL6 were significantly decreased in WAS females who received probiotics (all P < 0.050). In conclusion, rWAS is induced in a sex-specific manner. A 10-day-long treatment with L. farciminis is an effective therapy for rWAS-induced colonic microinflammation in female rates, but not in male rats.

The aging-associated cellular and molecular changes in esophagus have not been established, yet. Thus we evaluated histological structure, interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-positive cells, and contractility in the esophagus of Fischer 344 rat at different ages (6-, 31-, 74-weeks, and 2-years). The lamina propria thickness and endomysial area were calculated. The immunoreactivity of c-Kit, nNOS and protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 was counted after immunohistochemistry. Expression of c-Kit, stem cell factor (SCF), nNOS and PGP 9.5 mRNA was measured by real-time PCR, and expression of c-Kit and nNOS protein was detected by Western blot. The airflow discharged from orchard airblast sprayers is a primary component for successfully carrying spray droplets to the target trees. Because of the variation in orchard tree canopies, control of the airflow to minimize off-target loss during spray application is essential. An automatic airflow control system for precision sprayers was developed to maximize spray droplet coverage on targets and minimize off-target loss while considering the tree canopy densities. The primary component of the system was an iris damper, which was designed as a retrofit attachment on the fan inlet of a threepoint airblast intelligent sprayer. A 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor was installed at the top of the sprayer to acquire the tree canopy data. A motor was employed to control the damper opening with a micro-controller. To develop the models required for automatic airflow control, field experiments were conducted at three canopy density orchards with different cultivars (GoldRush, Gala, and Fuji). A total of 15 trees (five trees from each cultivar) were randomly selected, and five different damper openings (openings 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) were tested for each tree. Opening 1 represented the same air inlet as a traditional precision airblast sprayer, while openings 2, 3, 4, and 5 were the sequentially reduced air inlets of the sprayer. A canopy density measurement algorithm was scripted to measure the canopy point density of individual trees. Three models were built to show relationships between (1) tree canopy point densities and airflows; (2) canopy densities and damper openings; and (3) damper opening and motor steps. The combination of the two models (2 & 3) was used to assess the amount of airflow required for a specific canopy density. Field validations for medium and high-density trees showed that the system achieved adequate spray penetration at the top, middle, bottom, back-left, and back-right positions of the tree sections and reduced off-target loss at the ground and edge of next row sections using openings 4 and 2, respectively. However, the mechanical motion of the damper required 3 s to move from minimum to maximum opening, so the average canopy density was recommended to control the airflow. The overall results suggested that the automatic airflow control system could reduce spray drift and off-target losses and improve spray application efficiency in orchards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethylene is an important regulator of developmental and stress responses in plants, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid synthase (ACS) proteins catalyze one of the rate-limiting steps in endogenous ethylene biosynthesis. Accordingly, the function of ACS family genes has been extensively studied in plants including Arabidopsis and tomato; however, little is known about the systemic function of ACS genes in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Here, we investigated the expression patterns of eight cucumber ACS family genes (CsACSs) in a variety of tissues and sex types, as well as in response to exogenous ethylene application, and their ACS activities. Tissue-specific expression profiling in monoecious and gynoecious cucumber plants revealed that some CsACSs were differentially expressed. In particular, the five genes CsACS1, CsACS1-2, CsACS2, CsACS6, and CsACS11 were highly expressed in the shoot apex regions of gynoecious and hermaphroditic cucumber plants. The expression of most CsACSs was also induced by exogenous ethylene application. Furthermore, three CsACS isoforms (CsACS9, CsACS10, and CsACS12) showed no ACS enzymatic activity, which was associated with the amino acid variations in the conserved active residues of CsACS proteins. However, an in vitro pull-down assay revealed that two enzymatically inactive isoforms (CsACS9 and CsACS10) did not significantly interact with four active isoforms (CsACS1, CsACS1-2, CsACS2, and CsACS6). Taken together, our findings will be valuable for elucidating the relationship between RNA expression, ACS activity, protein-protein interactions between CsACSs and cucumber sex types.
