Visible–near-infrared–shortwave-infrared (VNIR–SWIR) spectroscopy is one of the most promising sensing techniques to meet ever-growing demands for soil information and data. To ensure the successful application of this technique in the field, efficient methods for tackling detrimental moisture effects on soil spectra are critical. In this paper, mathematical techniques for reducing or removing the effects of soil moisture content (SMC) from spectra are reviewed. The reviewed techniques encompass the most common spectral pre-processing and algorithms, as well as less frequently reported methods including approaches within the remote sensing domain. Examples of studies describing their effectiveness in the search for calibration model improvement are provided. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques are summarized. Future research including further studies on a wider range of soil types, in-field conditions, and systematic experiments considering several SMC levels to enable the definition of threshold values for the effectiveness of the discussed methods is recommended. Recent developments in the monitoring of soil degradation processes have used passive remote sensing (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy) and active remote-sensing tools such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and frequency domain electromagnetic induction (FDEM). We have limited our review to three important degradation processes: structural crust, salinity', and soil mineral deformation and alterations caused by fire. These degradation processes, leading to declines in soil fertility and productivity, are commonly viewed in terms of their spatial and temporal distribution and variability, making spatial monitoring tools such as remote sensing the preferred choice. Recent work has shown that a hyperspectral (narrow-bands) approach combined with active remote sensing (FDEM and GPR) can be used to provide detailed, three-dimensional maps of soil salinity status in croplands. Such a map could improve our understanding of salinization mechanisms and salt sources, leading to improved drainage-system planning and management. Another pronounced hazard is structural crust formation following rainstorm events, which decreases soil infiltration, accelerates water runoff, and increases the potential for soil erosion. The spatial distribution of soil infiltration can be assessed using spectral information. Finally, recent studies have shown the potential of hyperspectral spectroscopy to assess and monitor mineralogical, chemical, and physical changes, some irreversible, in post-fire soils. The irreversible changes may serve as a footprint of fire intensity but may also affect the burned ecosystem's recovery. Abstract The existence of vertical transmission in chickens under commercial settings, where chicks are raised separately from adults, is unclear. To answer this question, the fecal microbiota of chicks hatched and grown separately was compared with their mothers’ microbiota. Most amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) identified in hens were not detected at all in chicks up to two weeks of age by 16S rDNA sequencing, and those that were detected had a low incidence among the chicks. Nevertheless, a few ASVs that were common with the hens were highly prevalent among the chicks, implying that they were efficiently transmitted to chicks. These ASVs were culturable from the reproductive tract of hens and eggshells. Furthermore, interventions attempting to disrupt transmission resulted in a reduction in the prevalence of specific phylogenetic groups in chicks. To conclude, vertical transmission in commercial poultry grown separately from adults likely exists but is not efficient, possibly resulting in impairment of microbiota function. This implies that artificial exposure to adult bacterial strains might improve microbiota functioning.

The new era of hyperspectral remote (HSR) sensors in orbit is approaching. Missions such as CHIME of the European Space Agency (ESA), EMIT/SBG of NASA, EnMAP of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and SHALOM of the Israel Space Agency (ISA) will launch in the near future, while other HSR sensors are already in orbit, such as DESIS of DLR, PRISMA of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and HISUI of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Vicarious calibration (VC) of satellite sensors is vital to tracking a sensor's performance during its lifetime and is a routine procedure in any satellite mission. Accordingly, searching for ideal sites for CAL/VAL operation is an important task that should be part of the mission planning. This study demonstrates two areas in southern Israel that can be acquired in one overpass as VC sites: Amiaz Plain (AP) and Makhtesh Ramon (MR), which were evaluated for their fulfillment of all VC requirements for HSR sensors. AP (5 km2 of homogeneous bright target) was found suitable for radiometric calibration, and MR (200 km2) for spectral and thematic validations. We checked the applicability of these sites using a high-end airborne HRS sensor (AisaFENIX 1K sensor with 420 bands, 375–2500 nm spectral range, and 1.5-m spatial resolution) along with comprehensive field studies and ground measurements. Accordingly, we developed an operational VC protocol to use these sites for both radiometric and spectral quality inspection of HRS satellites. We demonstrated this capability on recent PRISMA and DESIS reflectance products. Here we provide these analyses and recommend how to use these areas to further examine DESIS data's performance. We call for collaborations with individuals and space agencies in using these VC sites, where we will provide ground-truth information and fulfill any other requirements for VC. Biological invasions of jellyfish may critically affect ecosystems and ecosystem services, yet their complex life cycle makes tracking their origins and dispersal vectors a challenging task. Here we combine citizen science observations, oceanographic modeling, and population genetics to track swarms of the invasive nomad jellyfish, Rhopilema nomadica, across the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Jellyfish observations were recorded by citizens from two Israeli beaches in two consecutive years. A Lagrangian model coupled with a high-resolution 3D hydrodynamic model (SINMOD) was then used to simulate drift of ephyrae from probable polyp bed locations. Finally, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence was constructed to examine swarm connectivity. Temporal (both seasonal and interannual) variation in observed swarms generally exceeded spatial differences between the two surveyed beaches. Early detection of swarms by citizens in offshore waters and the higher offshore particle distribution shown by the drift model, point to considerable offshore transport of the swarms. However, a higher probability was found for a nearshore location of the polyp beds, as nearshore origins were more closely correlated to hits on target beaches. R. nomadica released as ephyrae in early spring were likely to reach target beaches 200-300 km down current within two to three months as swarms of young adults in the early summer bathing season. R. nomadica populations exhibited little temporal or spatial genetic differentiation, a typical feature of a species that has recently undergone rapid population expansion. The offshore transport, the lack of genetic structure, and the interannual differences in both hydrodynamics and citizen scientist observations, all indicate decentralized swarm origins. This type of interdisciplinary approach can thus provide viable tools to track bloom formations. Understanding the complexity of jellyfish swarm dynamics supports future management strategies such as forecasting, preparedness and public education.
