The Mesoproterozoic Jixian System (1.6–1.4 Ga) in the Luonan area, southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), is characterized by complete development, continuous sedimentation and a low degree of structural deformation, resulting in well-preserved palaeontological and paleoenvironmental records. Carbon, oxygen and strontium isotopes of 382 dolostone samples from the Jixian System in Xiong'er Rift, southern margin of the NCC are analysed for the restoration of paleoenvironment and stratigraphic correlation. The results show that the δ13C values of these samples mainly concentrate between −1.8‰ and 2.0‰, and the values can be divided into three segments. The δ18O values are mainly between −6.5‰ and −3.5‰, with frequent fluctuations and weak regularity. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio ranges from 0.7051 to 0.7139, with an average value of 0.7085. Its fluctuations have certain regularity and are negatively correlated with the carbon isotopes, indicating that the sea-level changes during the Jixian period in the southern margin of the NCC. The carbon isotope curve of the samples from the study section is very similar to those of the Xiong'er Rift and the Yanliao Rift of the NCC. The −3.2‰ δ13C negative excursion in the middle and upper parts of the Xunjiansi Formation corresponds to the δ13C negative excursion from the top of the Wumishan Formation to the bottom of the Tieling Formation in the Yanliao Rift. Combined with previous research data, the Jixian System that deposited in the Xiong'er Rift and the Yanliao Rift can be approximately correlated with each other. In addition, the carbon isotope data obtained from this study is comparable to global carbon isotope values during the same period. The Ordos Basin, as the second largest petroliferous basin of China, contains abundant oil and gas resources, oil shale, and sandstone‐type uranium mineral resources. Chang 7 shale is not only the major source rock of the Mesozoic petroliferous system of the Basin, but is also crucial in determining the space‐time distribution relationship of the shale section for the effective exploration and development of the Basin's oil and gas resources. To obtain a highly precise age of the shale development section, we collected tuff samples from the top and bottom profile of the Chang 7 Member, Yishi Village, Yaoqu Town, Tongchuan District, on the southern margin of the Ordos Basin and performed high‐precision chemical abrasion (CA)–isotope dilution (ID)–thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) zircon U‐Pb dating on the basis of extensive laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) zircon U‐Pb dating data. Our results show the precise ages of the top and bottom zircon in the Chang 7 shale to be 241.06±0.12 Ma and 241.558±0.093 Ma, respectively. We first obtained Chang 7 age data with Grade 0.1‐Ma precision and then determined the age of the shale development in the Chang 7 Member to be the early‐Middle Triassic Ladinian. This result is supported by paleontological evidence. The deposition duration of the Chang 7 shale is 0.5Ma with an average deposition rate of the shale section being 5.3 cm/ka. Our research results provide time scale and basic data for further investigation of the basin–mountain coupling relation of the shale section, the sedimentary environment and volcanic ash and organic‐matter‐rich shale development relation, and the organism break‐out and organic‐matter enrichment mechanism. Based on isotopic, lithologic and electrical data and logging cycle analysis technique, stratigraphic sequences in the Middle–Upper Cambrian Xixiangchi Group in the Sichuan Basin and its adjacent area are divided, and its sedimentary characteristics and evolution are analyzed. The Xixiangchi Group can be divided into 5 third-order sequences (Sq1–Sq5), of which sequences I to III (Sq1–Sq3) are relatively complete, sequences IV and V are denuded in the Late Cambrian because of the Dian-Chuan paleo-uplifts. Third-order sequences of the Xixiangchi Group in this area have the characteristics of thin in the west and thick in the east, showing that the Caledonian paleo-uplift is a synsedimentary paleo-uplift and the paleogeomorphology in the platform is a gentle slope. Sequence I develops high stand systems tract and transgressive systems tract. The other third-order sequences are dominated by highstand systems tracts, and the transgressive systems tracts last shortly in time and are limited in area. The basic features of evaporative–restricted platform of gentle slope type developed continuously in the sedimentary period of the Xixiangchi Group, its sedimentary environment of "high in west and low in east" and the change of micro paleogeomorphology in the platform control the continuous development of sedimentary facies. Open platform is developed only in sequence I and sequence II, and the inner beach of the platform and the edge beach of the platform are mostly developed in sequence II and sequence III. It indicates that there are two platform margin zones in the study area, a relatively stable, large-scale platform marginal zone in NE Guizhou–Western Hunan and Hubei, and a moving and small-scale platform marginal zone in North Chongqing–Western Hubei. The Yanchang Formation is extensively developed in the Ordos Basin and its surrounding regions. As one of the best terrestrial Triassic sequences in China and the major oil-gas bearing formations in the Ordos Basin, its age determination and stratigraphic assignment are important in geological survey and oil-gas exploration. It had been attributed to the Late Triassic and regarded as the typical representative of the Upper Triassic in northern China for a long time, although some scholars had already proposed that the lower part of this formation should be of the Middle Triassic age in the mid-late 20th century. In this paper, we suggest that the lower and middle parts of the Yanchang Formation should be of the Ladinian and the bottom possibly belongs to the late Anisian of the Middle Triassic, mainly based on new fossils found in it and high resolution radiometric dating results. The main source rocks, namely the oil shales and mudstones of the Chang-7, are of the Ladinian Age. The upper part of the Yanchang Formation, namely the Chang-6 and the above parts, belongs to the Late Triassic. The uppermost of the Triassic is missed in most parts of the Ordos Basin. The Middle-Upper Triassic Series boundary lies in the Yanchang Formation, equivalent to the boundary between Chang-7 and Chang-6. The Ladinian is an important palaeoenvironmental turning point in the Ordos Basin. Palaeoenvironmental changes in the basin are coincidence with that of the Sichuan Basin and the main tectonic movement of the Qinling Mountains. It indicates that tectonic activities of the Qinling Mountains are related to the big palaeoenvironmental changes in both the Ordos and Sichuan Basins, which are caused by the same structural dynamic system during the Ladinian. Male cones ofIxostrobus hailarensisfrom Lower Cretaceous strata of the Hailar region of north-east China were re-examined for features of their cuticle andin situpollen. The cones are loosely aggregated and possess helically arranged peltate microsporophylls containing resin bodies. Microsporophyll cuticle is thick, papillate and has elliptical stomata with 6–9 subsidiary and ∼10 encircling cells. Adaxial sporangia contain monosulcate pollen assignable to the dispersed taxonCycadopites minimus. Both the cuticle and pollen are distinct fromIxostrobusbut are consistent with the cycad generaAndrostrobus,Aegianthus,Loricanthusand the putative angiospermSolaranthus.Reanalysis of the type species ofAndrostrobus,A. zamioides, provides new information on its structure and allows an accurate delimitation of the genus and improved comparison with other genera. A new genus,Schimperstrobus, is erected for species now excluded fromAndrostrobus. Comparisons indicate thatSolaranthusrepresents a male cycad cone and thatAegianthus,LoricanthusandSolaranthusare synonyms;Aegianthushas nomenclatural priority. We emend the combined generic and specific diagnoses forAegianthus sibiricusto allow additional species to be placed in the genus, and erect the new combinationsAegianthus resiniferafor specimens previously assigned toLoricanthus, andAegianthus daohugouensisfor specimens previously placed withinSolaranthus. The Hailar cone conforms to the generic circumscription ofAegianthusand represents a new species that we nameA. hailarensiscomb. nov.Androstrobus phialophoraalso conforms withAegianthusand is transferred toAegianthus phialophoracomb. nov. Co-occurring withA. hailarensisare cuticles of the ginkgophyte leafSphenobaiera longifoliathat are similar to microsporophyll cuticles ofA. hailarensis. However, we discount that they belong to a single plant species and conclude that the cuticles of some Mesozoic ginkgoalean and cycadalean taxa may be virtually indistinguishable. Trees on the side directly exposed to sunlight generally grow faster than on the opposite side, a phenomenon termed plant phototropism. There are in situ vertical trunks of silicified wood in the Xiadelongwan area of Yanqing County, north Beijing, where the first National Geologic Park of Petrified Wood of China has been built since 2002. A few trunks have well-preserved growth rings. One petrified stump from the formation shows a positive phototropism direction of SW230°. As compared with the modern normal growth stumps in Beijing plain area, which have a positive phototropism direction of SW210 ° ± 5°, the evidence of wood phototropism supports the conclusion of previous palaeomagnetic studies that the North China Plate has rotated clockwise since the Late Jurassic. The known petrified wood stumps in the Yanshan-Liaoning area are mainly found from the strata of 165-136 Ma, which corresponds to the main stage of the Yanshanian Movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon-isotope stratigraphy launched since the early technological development of carbon-isotope measurement in 1950s, however, the emergence and advance of terrestrial carbon-isotope stratigraphy took quite a long way. At early stage the exploration of carbon-isotope stratigraphy based on the marine biological shell carbonates was verified by repeatable carbon-isotope stratigraphic data, laboratory chemical experiments and the later laboratory foraminiferal culture experiments. The breakthrough for testifying the fundamentals of terrestrial carbon-isotope stratigraphy lies on the synchronous fluctuations between the carbon-isotope stratigraphic curves derived from marine biological shell carbonates and those derived from terrestrial C3 plants. The character that carbon-isotope stratigraphic curves can be globally synchronously correlated over the marine and terrestrial/atmospheric reservoir mainly excludes the potential biasing factors, such as diagenetic bias, carbon-isotope variations in intra/inter individual plant in same species or between species, ecological changes, changes in aridity, changes in source input and representative sampling. Therefore, the fundamentals of terrestrial carbon-isotope stratigraphy based on C3 plant successfully established. The terrestrial carbon-isotope stratigraphy can be used for global stratigraphic correlation, reconstructing the evolution of atmospheric CO2 and can further verify the published global carbon-cycle models. • Surface-modified carbon foam (SMCF) was obtained by carbothermal reaction of FeSO 4. • The carbothermal reaction greatly influences the microstructures of carbon foams. • Resulting Fe 2 O 3 particles were embedded into the honeycomb-like surface of SMCF. • High N, O and S contents are beneficial to the electrochemical performance. • The SMCF-1000 has relatively high specific capacitance and excellent cyclability. [Display omitted] This work developed novel surface-modified carbon foams (SMCFs) with high heteroatom contents and a certain amount of iron oxide particles via the carbothermal reduction reaction between iron oxide and the cyanate resin-based carbon foam. The effects of carbothermal reduction of iron oxide on microstructures and electrochemical properties of the carbon foams have been studied systematically using TG, XRD, FESEM, BET, and XPS. Results show that the carbothermal reduction greatly influences the microstructures of carbon foams when the temperature is higher than 600 °C. The generated iron oxide particles were embedded into the surface of carbon foams. With the increase of temperature, the surface became porous and rough with a certain graphitic structure. When the temperature arrives at 1000 °C, the as-prepared SMCF-1000 has a highest specific capacitance of 212.42 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, and the specific capacitance maintains 107% of the initial value after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. In addition, the SMCF-1000 exhibits a maximum compressive strength of 2.52 MPa, which is expected to be a novel three-dimensional self-supporting electrode material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article looks at a study which compares the phototropism direction of the trunk of the fossil wood with the living normal growth stumps, thus verifying the paleomagnetic evidence whether the plates rotated. It mentions wood phototropism phenomenon with different tectonic movements which recovered from the palaeomagnetic record. It also mentions eccentricity of tree growth rings should be related to the direction of sunshine.
