Since 1950, anthropogenic activities have altered the climate, land cover, soil properties, channel morphologies, and water management in the river basins of Europe. This has resulted in significant changes in hydrological conditions. The availability of consistent estimates of river flow at the global and continental levels is a necessity for assessing changes in the hydrological cycle. To overcome limitations posed by observations (incomplete records, inhomogeneous spatial coverage), we simulate river discharge for Europe for the period 1951–2020 using a state-of-the-art hydrological modelling approach. We use the new European set-up of the OS LISFLOOD model, running at 1 arcmin (≈1.8 km) with 6-hourly time steps. The hydrological model is forced by climate reanalysis data (ERA5-Land) that are bias-corrected and downscaled to the model resolution with gridded weather observations. The model also incorporates 72 surface field maps representing catchment morphology, vegetation, soil properties, land use, water demand, lakes, and reservoirs. Inputs related to human activities are evolving through time to emulate societal changes. The resulting Hydrological European ReAnalysis (HERA) provides 6-hourly river discharge for 282 521 river pixels with an upstream area >100 km2. We assess its skill using 2448 river gauging stations distributed across Europe. Overall, HERA delivers satisfying results (median KGE′=0.55), despite a general underestimation of observed mean discharges (mean bias=-13.1 %), and demonstrates a capacity to reproduce statistics of observed extreme flows. The performance of HERA increases through time and with catchment size, and it varies in space depending on reservoir influence and model calibration. The fine spatial and temporal resolution results in an enhanced performance compared to previous hydrological reanalysis based on OS LISFLOOD for small- to medium-scale catchments (100–10 000 km2). HERA is the first publicly available long-term, high-resolution hydrological reanalysis for Europe. Despite its limitations, HERA enables the analysis of hydrological dynamics related to extremes, human influences, and climate change at a continental scale while maintaining local relevance. It also creates the opportunity to study these dynamics in ungauged catchments across Europe. Mapping in situ eddy covariance measurements of terrestrial land–atmosphere fluxes to the globe is a key method for diagnosing the Earth system from a data-driven perspective. We describe the first global products (called X-BASE) from a newly implemented upscaling framework, FLUXCOM-X, representing an advancement from the previous generation of FLUXCOM products in terms of flexibility and technical capabilities. The X-BASE products are comprised of estimates of CO2 net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary productivity (GPP), evapotranspiration (ET), and for the first time a novel, fully data-driven global transpiration product (ETT), at high spatial (0.05°) and temporal (hourly) resolution. X-BASE estimates the global NEE at −5.75 ± 0.33 Pg C yr−1 for the period 2001–2020, showing a much higher consistency with independent atmospheric carbon cycle constraints compared to the previous versions of FLUXCOM. The improvement of global NEE was likely only possible thanks to the international effort to increase the precision and consistency of eddy covariance collection and processing pipelines, as well as to the extension of the measurements to more site years resulting in a wider coverage of bioclimatic conditions. However, X-BASE global net ecosystem exchange shows a very low interannual variability, which is common to state-of-the-art data-driven flux products and remains a scientific challenge. With 125 ± 2.1 Pg C yr−1 for the same period, X-BASE GPP is slightly higher than previous FLUXCOM estimates, mostly in temperate and boreal areas. X-BASE evapotranspiration amounts to 74.7×103 ± 0.9×103 km3 globally for the years 2001–2020 but exceeds precipitation in many dry areas, likely indicating overestimation in these regions. On average 57 % of evapotranspiration is estimated to be transpiration, in good agreement with isotope-based approaches, but higher than estimates from many land surface models. Despite considerable improvements to the previous upscaling products, many further opportunities for development exist. Pathways of exploration include methodological choices in the selection and processing of eddy covariance and satellite observations, their ingestion into the framework, and the configuration of machine learning methods. For this, the new FLUXCOM-X framework was specifically designed to have the necessary flexibility to experiment, diagnose, and converge to more accurate global flux estimates.

Assessing long-term trends in flood losses and attributing them to climatic and socioeconomic changes requires comprehensive and systematic collection of historical information. Here, we present flood impact data for Europe that are part of the HANZE (Historical Analysis of Natural HaZards) database. The dataset covers riverine, pluvial, coastal, and compound floods that have occurred in 42 European countries between 1870 and 2020. The data were obtained by extensive data collection from more than 800 sources ranging from news reports through government databases to scientific papers. The dataset includes 2521 events characterized by at least one impact statistic: area inundated, fatalities, persons affected. or economic loss. Economic losses are presented both in the original currencies and price levels and with the inflation and exchange rate adjusted to the 2020 value of the euro. The spatial footprint of affected areas is consistently recorded using more than 1400 subnational units corresponding, with minor exceptions, to the European Union's Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) level 3. Daily start and end dates, information on causes of the events, notes on data quality issues or associated non-flood impacts, and full bibliography of each record supplement the dataset. Apart from the possibility of downloading the data (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8410025; Paprotny, 2023a), the database can be viewed, filtered, and visualized online at https://naturalhazards.eu (last access: 4 November 2024). The dataset is designed to be complementary to HANZE-Exposure, a high-resolution model of historical exposure changes (such as population and asset values) and be easily usable in statistical and spatial analyses, including multi-hazard studies.

Long-term trends in flood losses are regulated by multiple factors including climate variation, demographic dynamics, economic growth, land-use transitions, reservoir construction and flood risk reduction measures. The attribution of those drivers through the use of counterfactual scenarios of hazard, exposure or vulnerability first requires a good representation of historical events, including their location, their intensity and the factual circumstances in which they occurred. Here, we develop a chain of models that is capable of recreating riverine, coastal and compound floods in Europe between 1950 and 2020 that had a potential to cause significant socioeconomic impacts. This factual catalogue of almost 15 000 such events was scrutinized with historical records of flood impacts. We found that at least 10 % of them led to significant socioeconomic impacts (including fatalities) according to available sources. The model chain was able to capture events responsible for 96 % of known impacts contained in the Historical Analysis of Natural Hazards in Europe (HANZE) flood impact database in terms of persons affected and economic losses and for 81 % of fatalities. The dataset enables the study of the drivers of vulnerability and flood adaptation due to a large sample of events with historical impact data. The model chain can be further used to generate counterfactual events, especially those related to climate change and human influence on catchments.

The BASE (Barberton Archean Surface Environments) scientific drilling project aimed at recovering an unweathered continuous core from the Paleoarchean Moodies Group (ca. 3.2 Ga), central Barberton Greenstone Belt (BGB), South Africa. These strata comprise some of the oldest well-preserved sedimentary strata on Earth, deposited within only a few million years in alluvial, fluvial, coastal-deltaic, tidal, and prodeltaic settings. They represent a very-high-resolution record of Paleoarchean surface conditions and processes. Moodies Group strata consist of polymict conglomerates, widespread quartzose, lithic and arkosic sandstones, siltstones, shales, and rare banded-iron formations (BIFs) and jaspilites, interbedded with tuffs and several thin lavas. This report describes objectives, drilling, and data sets; it supplements the operational report. Eight inclined boreholes between 280 and 495 m length, drilled from November 2021 through July 2022, obtained a total of 2903 m of curated core of variable quality through steeply to subvertically dipping, in part overturned stratigraphic sections. All drilling objectives were reached. Boreholes encountered a variety of conglomerates, diverse and abundant, mostly tuffaceous sandstones, rhythmically laminated shale-siltstone and banded-iron formations, and several horizons of early-diagenetic silicified sulfate concretions. Oxidative weathering reached far deeper than expected. Fracturing was more intense, and BIFs and jaspilites were thicker than anticipated. Two ca. 1 km long mine adits and a water tunnel, traversing four thick stratigraphic sections within the upper Moodies Group in the central BGB, were also sampled. All boreholes were logged by downhole wireline geophysical instruments. The core was processed (oriented, slabbed, photographed, described, and archived) in a large, publicly accessible hall in downtown Barberton. A geological exhibition provided background explanations for visitors and related the drilling objectives to the recently established Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains World Heritage Site. A substantial education, outreach, and publicity program addressed the information needs of the local population and of local and regional stakeholders.

Background: Approved treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients pretreated with two lines of therapy are of limited efficacy. Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) re-challenge might represent an option in RAS wild-type tumours. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anti-EGFR re-challenge strategies (panitumumab/chemotherapy). Materials and methods: RAS wild-type metastatic CRC patients following first-line chemotherapy + anti-EGFR agent and second-line chemotherapy ± anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agent were eligible. Panitumumab with irinotecan or oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy was used. The primary objective was response rate (RR). Secondary objectives were safety, progression-free survival and overall survival. Next-generation sequencing-based genotyping in archived tissue and plasma was carried out to identify prognostic factors. Results: The study closed prematurely, due to poor accrual, with 23 patients included. Most patients had primary tumours in the left colon/rectum, and the liver was the most common metastatic site. Treatment modifications were required in 74% of patients due to side-effects primarily, neutropenia and acneiform rash. One patient died from hepatic failure. The objective RR in the intention-to-treat population was 13%, and the disease control rate (DCR) was 52%. Forty-eight percent of patients tested via liquid biopsy had RAS mutations before re-challenge with panitumumab despite a median interval from previous anti-EGFR therapy of 12 months. Control of disease did not correlate with the results of liquid biopsy. RR and DCR in patients without RAS mutations in liquid biopsies were 18.2% and 54.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Panitumumab/chemotherapy as an anti-EGFR re-challenge strategy had modest activity in our patient cohort.

The existing air pollution monitoring network in the Attica basin, overseen by the Ministry of the Environment (MEEN) consists of certified and high-cost sensors, and consequently is not dense enough. At the same time, it offers no easily accessible information to the citizens or representative data on population exposure. Low cost IoT sensors present a solution to the density issue, even though Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) is required to ensure accuracy of their measurements, but face challenges related to their deployment. Within that frame, the Smart Stations were developed by the FAIRCITY (ATTP4-0360457) project aiming to bridge Smart City Services (e.g., free internet, information, wheelchair/devices charging) with continuous air quality monitoring and exposure assessment. The smart info-kiosk benches powered by sunlight (manufactured by a Greek Innovation Company) were thus employed where low cost IoT sensors were embedded, offering a unique opportunity to monitor air quality at the level where citizens live. This endeavor faced several challenges related to the design of smart stations, the network, the information to be conveyed to the public and the scientific value of the data collected.

During the last decades, the coastal areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, have been subjected to intense economic and industrial growth. As a result, it may be expected that the overall environmental status of Saudi Arabian coastal marine waters has been affected by human activities. As a consequence, adequate management of the Saudi Arabian coastal zone requires an assessment of how the various pressures within this zone impact the quality of seawater and sediments. To this end, environmental surveys were conducted over 15 hotspot areas (areas subject to environmental pressures) in the Saudi Arabian coastal zone of the Red Sea and over three hotspot areas in the Saudi Arabian waters of the Arabian Gulf. The survey in the Red Sea, conducted in June/July 2021, acquired measurements from hotspot areas spanning most of the Saudi coastline, extending from near the Saudi–Jordanian border in the north to Al Shuqaiq and Jizan Economic City (close to the Saudi–Yemen border) in the south. The survey in the Arabian Gulf, carried out in September 2021, included the areas of Al Khobar, Dammam and Ras Al Khair. The main objective of both cruises was to record the physical and biogeochemical parameters along the coastal waters of the kingdom, tracing the dispersion of contaminants related to specific pressures. Taken together, these cruises constitute the first multidisciplinary and geographically comprehensive study of contaminants within the Saudi Arabian coastal waters and sediments. The measurements acquired revealed the influence of various anthropogenic pressures on the coastal marine environment of Saudi Arabia and also highlighted a strong influence of hydrographic conditions on the distribution of biochemical properties in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Global collections of synthesized flux tower data such as FLUXNET have accelerated scientific progress beyond the eddy covariance community. However, remaining data issues in FLUXNET data pose challenges for users, particularly for multi-site synthesis and modelling activities. Here, we present complementary consistency flags (C2Fs) for flux tower data, which rely on multiple indications of inconsistency among variables, along with a methodology to detect discontinuities in time series. The C2F relates to carbon and energy fluxes, as well as to core meteorological variables, and consists of the following: (1) flags for daily data values, (2) flags for entire-site variables, and (3) flags at time stamps that mark large discontinuities in the time series. The flagging is primarily based on combining outlier scores from a set of predefined relationships among variables. The methodology to detect break points in the time series is based on a non-parametric test for the difference in distributions of model residuals. Applying C2F to the FLUXNET 2015 dataset reveals the following: (1) among the considered variables, gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration data were flagged most frequently, in particular during rain pulses under dry and hot conditions. This information is useful for modelling and analysing ecohydrological responses. (2) There are elevated flagging frequencies for radiation variables (shortwave, photosynthetically active, and net). This information can improve the interpretation and modelling of ecosystem fluxes with respect to issues in the driver. (3) The majority of long-term sites show temporal discontinuities in the time series of latent energy, net ecosystem exchange, and radiation variables. This should be useful for carefully assessing the results in terms of interannual variations in and trends of ecosystem fluxes. The C2F methodology is flexible for customizing and allows for varying the desired strictness of consistency. We discuss the limitations of the approach that can present starting points for future developments.

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Introduction The global burden associated with common mental disorders is high, especially for people living in low resource settings. Although psychosocial interventions delivered by locally available lay or community health workers are effective, mechanisms of intervention response are poorly understood. One of the greatest barriers is that psychosocial interventions are administered as complex, multi-component “packages of care”. Objectives Our aim is to systematically review all the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have tested the efficacy of psychosocial interventions delivered through the task shifting modality to treat people suffering from common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, and related somatic complaints) in low resource settings, dismantle the intervention protocols creating a taxonomy of active intervention components, and re-evaluate their efficacy. Methods We will use the component network meta-analysis (cNMA) methodology. The major benefit of cNMA is the possibility to disentangle intervention components and explore their effectiveness separately or in various combinations (even in disconnected networks). cNMA increases statistical power by combining direct and indirect comparisons while fully respecting the randomized structure of the evidence. According to the additive cNMA model which we will implement, adding a component “c” to a composite intervention “X” will lead to an increase (or decrease) of the effect size by an amount only dependent on “c”, and not on “X”. We will denote the corresponding component specific incremental standard mean difference (iSMD) so that iSMDc = SMD(X+c) v. (X). Combining these component-specific iSMDs will allow the estimation of SMD between any two composite interventions. Results A network of comparisons and a hierarchy that includes all intervention components expressed as iSMD, indicating the added benefit of adding a component to an intervention, will be presented. By selecting the most effective components it will be possible to outline a novel task shifting psychosocial intervention to be tested in future RCTs. Conclusions These findings will set the basis for further investigations in the field of precision medicine. Introduction Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common mental disorders in adults. Psychotherapies are among the most recommended treatment choices for GAD, but which should be considered as first-line treatment still needs to be clarified. Objectives To examine the most effective and accepted psychotherapy for GAD both in the short and long-term, via a network meta-analysis. Methods We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials – CENTRAL, from database inception to January 1st, 2023, to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychotherapies for GAD. Eight psychotherapies (behaviour therapy, cognitive-behaviour therapy, cognitive restructuring, psychoeducation, psychodynamic therapy, relaxation therapy, supportive psychotherapy, and third-wave CBTs) were compared with each other and two control conditions (treatment as usual, waiting list). We followed Cochrane standards when extracting data and assessing data quality and used PRISMA guidelines for the reporting. We conducted random-effects model pairwise and network meta-analyses. We assessed risk of bias of individual studies through the second version of the Cochrane’s Risk of Bias tool and used the Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis (CINeMA) to rate certainty of evidence for meta-analytical results. Severity of GAD symptoms and acceptability of the psychotherapies were our outcomes of interest. Results We analysed data from 66 RCTs. Effect size estimates on data from 5,597 participants suggest third wave cognitive-behavioural therapies (standardized mean differences [SMDs] =-0.78; 95%CI=-1.19 to -0.37; certainty=moderate), cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) (SMD=-0.68; 95%CI=-1.05 to -0.32 certainty=moderate), and relaxation therapy (SMD=-0.54; 95%CI=-1.04 to -0.05; certainty=low) reduced generalized anxiety symptoms more than treatment as usual (TAU). Relative risks for all-cause discontinuation signalled no differences compared with TAU for all psychotherapies. When excluding studies at high risk of bias, relaxation therapy lost its superiority over TAU. When considering anxiety severity at three to twelve months after completion of the intervention only CBT remained significantly more efficacious than TAU (SMD=-0.58; 95%CI=-0.93 to -0.23). Image: Conclusions Given the evidence for both acute and long-term efficacy, CBT may represent the reasonable first-line psychological treatment for GAD. Third-wave CBT and relaxation therapy have short-term efficacy and may also be offered. Results from this investigation should inform patients, clinicians, and guidelines. Introduction This study explores attitudes toward blood donation in Greece, where maintaining an adequate supply is challenging. Using the Health Belief Model, we examine factors like perceived severity, vulnerability, and self-efficacy. Objectives The main aims of this study are to assess public perceptions and barriers concerning blood shortage in Greece, and to identify motivators and self-efficacy levels for regular blood donation. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire distributed to a sample of Greek adults. The questionnaire was designed based on the constructs of the Health Belief Model and included questions related to perceived severity, vulnerability, self-efficacy, and barriers and facilitators to blood donation. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the responses, calculating means and standard deviations (SDs) for each variable. Results Perceived Severity and Vulnerability Participants in our study show a heightened awareness of the severity of blood shortages, especially in summer months and during increased surgical interventions. They also acknowledge Greece’s dependency on more than just voluntary donations to meet blood supply needs. These findings align with the Health Belief Model’s constructs of perceived severity and vulnerability, suggesting avenues for promoting donation. Perceived Benefits and Barriers A significant 74% of participants believe they can regularly donate blood and plan to do so in the next six months. However, fear of needles, health concerns, and fears of transmissible diseases act as barriers. According to the Health Belief Model, targeting these barriers could facilitate blood donation. Self-Efficacy A high percentage (74%, SD=5) of participants displayed strong self-efficacy, suggesting they are likely to engage in blood donation if encouraged. This aligns with the Health Belief Model’s emphasis on self-efficacy as a motivator for health actions. Cues to Action Participants identified informational campaigns, digital reminders, and social encouragement as cues to action, with a disfavor for financial incentives. These cues could serve as triggers for blood donation, consistent with the Health Belief Model. Conclusions By aligning these findings with the Health Belief Model, it becomes evident that there are strong perceptions of severity and vulnerability, but also considerable barriers to overcome. The high self-efficacy among participants and the cues to action identified could serve as bases for targeted interventions to improve blood donation rates. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction Since its first publication in 1977, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) has guided the national procurement of medicines deemed essential to inform public health policy worldwide. Aiming to include the most effective, safe, and cost-effective medicines for priority conditions, WHO updates the EML every two years. However, over the past 45 years, updates to the mental health section of the EML have been infrequent, mostly involving the addition of individual medicines. A comprehensive revision of the entire section was never attempted. Objectives The aim of this project was to update the mental health section of the EML to identify the most effective and safest medicines for mental disorders in the light of the most up-to-date evidence base. Methods A series of nine evidence-based applications were submitted to the WHO Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines in December 2022, recommending a substantial revision of the entire mental health section. Results All of our applications were accepted by the WHO Expert Committee. For psychotic disorders, aripiprazole, olanzapine, paliperidone, and quetiapine were added as therapeutic alternatives to risperidone; short-acting intramuscular chlorpromazine was replaced by short-acting intramuscular olanzapine; first-generation antipsychotics were limited to oral haloperidol and chlorpromazine. For bipolar disorder, the list now includes second-generation antipsychotics such as quetiapine, aripiprazole, olanzapine, and paliperidone. Tricyclic antidepressants for depressive disorders were limited to amitriptyline alone. Treatment options for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder are now expanded to include SSRIs. For anxiety disorders, diazepam and lorazepam became the only benzodiazepines recommended, with the specific caveat that they should only be used for short-term emergency treatment of acute and severe anxiety symptoms. Finally, chlorpromazine and haloperidol are no longer considered essential medications for psychotic disorders in children under 13 years of age. Conclusions The WHO released the 23rd EML in July 2023. After decades of minimal and inconsistent updates, groundbreaking changes have been made to its mental health section. The updated mental health section provides a compelling opportunity to improve the quality of medicine selection at the country level, with the goal of increasing the availability of the safest and most effective psychotropic medicines worldwide. Abstract The specific activity of the $$\beta $$ β decay of $$^{39}$$ 39 Ar in atmospheric argon is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector. DEAP-3600, located 2 km underground at SNOLAB, uses a total of (3269 ± 24) kg of liquid argon distilled from the atmosphere to search for dark matter. This detector is well-suited to measure the decay of $$^{39}$$ 39 Ar owing to its very low background levels. This is achieved in two ways: it uses low background construction materials; and it uses pulse-shape discrimination to differentiate between nuclear recoils and electron recoils. With 167 live-days of data, the measured specific activity at the time of atmospheric extraction is (0.964 ± 0.001 $$_\textrm{stat}$$ stat ± 0.024 $$_\textrm{sys}$$ sys ) Bq/kg $$_\textrm{atmAr}$$ atmAr , which is consistent with results from other experiments. A cross-check analysis using different event selection criteria and a different statistical method confirms the result.

The winter 1788/89 was one of the coldest winters Europe had witnessed in the past 300 years. Fortunately, for historical climatologists, this extreme event occurred at a time when many stations across Europe, both private and as part of coordinated networks, were making quantitative observations of the weather. This means that several dozen early instrumental series are available to carry out an in-depth study of this severe cold spell. While there have been attempts to present daily spatial information for this winter, there is more to be done to understand the weather variability and day-to-day processes that characterised this weather extreme. In this study, we seek to reconstruct daily spatial high-resolution temperature and sea level pressure fields of the winter 1788/89 in Europe from November through February. The reconstruction is performed with an analogue resampling method (ARM) that uses both historical instrumental data and a weather type classification. Analogue reconstructions are then post-processed through an ensemble Kalman fitting (EnKF) technique. Validation experiments show good skill for both reconstructed variables, which manage to capture the dynamics of the extreme in relation to the large-scale circulation. These results are promising for more such studies to be undertaken, focusing on different extreme events and other regions in Europe and perhaps even further back in time. The dataset presented in this study may be of sufficient quality to allow historians to better assess the environmental and social impacts of the harsh weather.

Separating the components of ecosystem-scale carbon exchange is crucial in order to develop better models and future predictions of the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, there are several uncertainties and unknowns related to current photosynthesis estimates. In this study, we evaluate four different methods for estimating photosynthesis at a boreal forest at the ecosystem scale, of which two are based on carbon dioxide (CO2) flux measurements and two on carbonyl sulfide (COS) flux measurements. The CO2-based methods use traditional flux partitioning and artificial neural networks to separate the net CO2 flux into respiration and photosynthesis. The COS-based methods make use of a unique 5-year COS flux data set and involve two different approaches to determine the leaf-scale relative uptake ratio of COS and CO2 (LRU), of which one (LRUCAP) was developed in this study. LRUCAP was based on a previously tested stomatal optimization theory (CAP), while LRUPAR was based on an empirical relation to measured radiation. For the measurement period 2013–2017, the artificial neural network method gave a GPP estimate very close to that of traditional flux partitioning at all timescales. On average, the COS-based methods gave higher GPP estimates than the CO2-based estimates on daily (23 % and 7 % higher, using LRUPAR and LRUCAP, respectively) and monthly scales (20 % and 3 % higher), as well as a higher cumulative sum over 3 months in all years (on average 25 % and 3 % higher). LRUCAP was higher than LRU estimated from chamber measurements at high radiation, leading to underestimation of midday GPP relative to other GPP methods. In general, however, use of LRUCAP gave closer agreement with CO2-based estimates of GPP than use of LRUPAR. When extended to other sites, LRUCAP may be more robust than LRUPAR because it is based on a physiological model whose parameters can be estimated from simple measurements or obtained from the literature. In contrast, the empirical radiation relation in LRUPAR may be more site-specific. However, this requires further testing at other measurement sites.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most important vegetables for human nutrition and its cultivation employs amounts of resources worldwide. However, tomato cultivation is plagued by several diseases and pests that increase production cost and introduce additional environmental and health risks due to pesticide use. Timely disease and pest detection is of high importance for tomato crop output and the environment, since plant protection input can be optimized. Here, we present a dataset of multispectral images (RGB and NIR) of tomato plants, at various stages of infection with Tuta absoluta and Leveillula taurica, which to our knowledge is unique. The dataset comprised of 263 images collected from a real greenhouse. Additionally, we applied a baseline Faster-RCNN object detector for the localization and classification lesions. Our experiments include (i) a version for the RGB channels and (ii) a custom backbone architecture version for feature fusion using the same Faster-RCNN head. Lastly, based on the detector’s output, we compute an >0.9 F1-score on binary classification, while mAP 18.5% and mAP 20.2% on detection, highlight the added value of NIR spectral bands for detecting these diseases.

Abstract Heparan sulfates have long been known to intracellularly accumulate in Alzheimer’s disease neurons, where they colocalize with neurofibrillary tangles made of abnormally phosphorylated and aggregated tau protein. However, the reasons and consequences of the heparan sulfates accumulation in the Alzheimer’s cells are not yet well understood. Previously, we showed that the neural heparan sulfate 3-O-sulfotransferase HS3ST2 is critical for the abnormal phosphorylation of tau in Alzheimer's disease-related tauopathy. Using cell models of tauopathy we showed that intracellular 3-O-sulfatated heparan sulfates interact with tau inducing its abnormal phosphorylation. However, it is unknown whether HS3ST2 expression induces the intracellular aggregation of tau in cells. Here, by using replicative pEBV plasmids, we engineered HEK293 cells to stably express HS3ST2 together with human tau carrying or not the P301S mutation. We show that HS3ST2 gain of function induces the cell autonomous aggregation of tau not only in cells expressing tauP301S, but also in cells expressing the wild type tau. Our engineered cells mimicked both the HS intracellular accumulation observed in neurons of Alzheimer’s disease and the tau aggregation characteristic of tauopathy development and evolution. These results give evidence that the neural HS3ST2 plays a critical role in the cell autonomous self-aggregation of tau.

Carbon (C) and greenhouse gas (GHG) research has traditionally required data collection and analysis using advanced and often expensive instruments, complex and proprietary software, and highly specialized research technicians. Partly as a result, relatively little C and GHG research has been conducted in resource-constrained developing countries. At the same time, these are often the same countries and regions in which climate change impacts will likely be strongest and in which major science uncertainties are centered, given the importance of dryland and tropical systems to the global C cycle. Increasingly, scientific communities have adopted appropriate technology and approach (AT&A) for C and GHG research, which focuses on low-cost and low-technology instruments, open-source software and data, and participatory and networking-based research approaches. Adopting AT&A can mean acquiring data with fewer technical constraints and lower economic burden and is thus a strategy for enhancing C and GHG research in developing countries. However, AT&A can have higher uncertainties; these can often be mitigated by carefully designing experiments, providing clear protocols for data collection, and monitoring and validating the quality of obtained data. For implementing this approach in developing countries, it is first necessary to recognize the scientific and moral importance of AT&A. At the same time, new AT&A techniques should be identified and further developed. All these processes should be promoted in collaboration with local researchers and through training local staff and encouraged for wide use and further innovation in developing countries.

Single crystal W is offered for Physics understanding of irradiation induced defects and their annealing as its structure is well defined and it is almost defect free. W(100) single crystal was neutron irradiated to a damage of 0.11 displacements per atom at 600 °C and subsequently isochronally annealed from 700 up to 1500 °C in 100 °C steps. Irradiation causes the formation of dislocation loops and vacancy clusters and a 45 % increase in hardness. After the annealing of 1500 °C the positron lifetime annihilation spectrum shows a defect free material and its hardness has been reverted to the pre-irradiation value and only clusters of Re, WRe and WOs2 have been detected by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. The total line density of dislocations, number density of voids and their size versus annealing temperature have been determined. From hardness, the critical resolved stresses arising from dislocations and voids have been derived and correlated with their densities. The kinetics of defect annihilation versus annealing temperature is discussed.

Obtaining high quality images of the spinal cord with MRI is difficult, partly due to the fact that the spinal cord is surrounded by a number of structures that have differing magnetic susceptibility. This causes inhomogeneities in the magnetic field, which in turn lead to image artifacts. In order to address this issue, linear compensation gradients can be employed. The latter can be generated using an MRI scanner's first order gradient coils and adjusted on a per-slice basis, in order to correct for through-plane (“z”) magnetic field gradients. This approach is referred to as z-shimming. The aim of this study is two-fold. The first aim was to replicate aspects of a previous study wherein z-shimming was found to improve image quality in T2*-weighted echo-planar imaging. Our second aim was to improve upon the z-shimming approach by including in-plane compensation gradients and adjusting the compensation gradients during the image acquisition process so that they take into account respiration-induced magnetic field variations. We refer to this novel approach as realtime dynamic shimming. Measurements performed in a group of 12 healthy volunteers at 3 T show improved signal homogeneity along the spinal cord when using z-shimming. Signal homogeneity may be further improved by including realtime compensation for respiration-induced field gradients and by also doing this for gradients along the in-plane axes.

Introduction During the COVID-19 pandemic, people with mental disorders were exposed to a common and prolonged source of stress. Studies focusing on the consequences of the pandemic on individuals with a history of mental disorder are scarce, but they suggest a higher vulnerability as compared to the general population. Objectives We aimed at identifying predictors of stress resilience maintained over time among these people during the first two years of the pandemic. Methods The presented study is part of a larger 2-year, 5-wave international longitudinal online survey. The Patient Health Questionnaire, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale and the PTSD Checklist DSM-5 were used as latent class indicators for a proxy measure of distress. Specifically, a Latent-Class Analysis was performed to identify a group that showed resilient outcomes across all waves. We investigated socio-demographic characteristics, economic and housing status, lifestyle and habits, pandemic-related issues, and chronic disease. Adherence to and approval of the restrictions imposed, trust in governments and the scientific community during the pandemic were also assessed. Social support, fear of contamination and personal values were investigated respectively through the Oslo Social Support Scale, the Padua Inventory, and the Portrait Values Questionnaire. The aforementioned characteristics were used to predict sustained resilience through a logistic regression. Results A total of 1711 participants out of the total sample (8011 participants from 13 different countries) reported a diagnosis of mental disorder before the pandemic. Nine hundred forty-three participants completed at least three of the five versions of the survey and were included in the analysis. A latent class of participants with resilience maintained over time (sustained resilience) was identified, with an estimated probability of 24.8%. The demographic and clinical variables associated with a higher chance of sustained resilience were older age, maintaining a job during the pandemic, and having a larger number of people in the household. In contrast, female gender, losing job during the pandemic, having difficulty meeting basic needs, greater fear of contamination, a stronger focus on hedonism, less social support and feeling lonely resulted in a lower likelihood of being sustained resilient. Conclusions This study identified a number of factors that may help predict resilient outcomes maintained over time in people with mental disorders. Introduction Antidepressant discontinuation may cause withdrawal syndrome in some cases. However, evidence on this syndrome related to individual antidepressants is limited, as well as about individual risk factors for severe reactions. Objectives To ascertain whether each individual antidepressant is associated with an increased reporting of withdrawal syndrome as compared with other medications, and to examine clinical risk factors for severe reactions. Methods We conducted a pharmacovigilance study, with a case/non-case design. We included reports of antidepressant-related withdrawal syndrome from the VigiBase, the WHO global database of individual case safety reports of suspected adverse drug reactions. We performed a disproportionality analysis (calculating reporting odds ratio (ROR) and the Bayesian information component (IC)) of reports of antidepressant-related withdrawal syndrome, comparing antidepressants to all other drugs and to buprenorphine (as a positive control). Antidepressants with significant disproportionate reporting were ranked in terms of clinical priority. We compared serious versus non-serious reactions to determine clinical risk factors for severe reactions. Results Based on 31,688 reports of antidepressant-related withdrawal syndrome, we detected a disproportionate reporting for 23 antidepressants. The ROR for antidepressants altogether, compared to all other drugs, was 14.26 (95%CI:14.08-14.45), 17.01 for other antidepressants (95%CI:16.73-17.29), 13.65 for SSRIs (95%CI:13.41-13.90) and 2.8 for tricyclics (95%CI:2.59-3.02). Based on clinical priority ranking, the strongest signals were found for paroxetine, duloxetine, venlafaxine and desvenlafaxine (figure 1), being comparable to buprenorphine. Severe reactions were more frequently reported in males, adolescents, persons with multiple medications, and with longer treatment duration. Image: Conclusions Antidepressants are associated with increased reporting of withdrawal syndrome compared with other medications, with differences between individual antidepressants. Clinicians should be aware of such differences, when prescribing and discontinuing these drugs, as well as of the risk to experience more severe withdrawal symptoms in specific cases. Introduction Evidence on neonatal withdrawal syndrome following antidepressant intrauterine exposure is limited, particularly for antidepressants other than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Objectives To ascertain whether maternal antidepressant treatment may be associated with withdrawal syndrome in neonates, investigating the comparative reporting between individual antidepressants and classes. Methods We performed a case/non-case pharmacovigilance study, searching reports of withdrawal syndrome in newborns in the VigiBase, the WHO database of suspected adverse drug reactions. Disproportionality analysis was performed, estimating reporting odds ratio (ROR) and the Bayesian information component (IC). Antidepressants were compared to all other medications, to methadone, and within each class of antidepressants (SSRIs, tricyclics (TCA) and other antidepressants). Antidepressants were ranked in terms of clinical priority, based on a semiquantitative score. Results We retrieved 406 reports of neonatal withdrawal syndrome in 379 neonates related to 15 antidepressants. Compared to all other drugs, disproportionate reporting was detected for antidepressants altogether (ROR: 6.18, 95%CI:5.45-7.01), for TCAs (10.55, 95%CI:8.02-13.88), other antidepressants (ROR: 5.90, 95%CI:4.74-7.36) and SSRIs (ROR: 4.68, 95%CI:4.04-5.42). All antidepressants showed a significant disproportionality, apart from bupropion (figure 1). We did not find any disproportionate reporting for any antidepressant compared to methadone. The clinical priority ranking showed moderate clinical priority for all antidepressants, with the exception four, that had a weak one (figure 1). Most frequently reported symptoms were respiratory symptoms (n=106), irritability/agitation (n=75), tremor (n=52) and feeding problems (n=40). Image: Conclusions Exposure to antidepressants in utero is associated with moderate signals of disproportionate reporting for neonatal withdrawal syndrome for most antidepressants. In recent years, instrumental observations have become increasingly important in climate research, allowing past daily-to-decadal climate variability and weather extremes to be explored in greater detail. The 18th century saw the formation of several short-lived meteorological networks of which the one organised by the Societas Meteorologica Palatina is arguably the most well known. This network stood out as one of the few that efficiently managed to control its members, integrating, refining, and publishing measurements taken from numerous stations around Europe and beyond. Although much has been written about the network in both history, science, and individual prominent series used for climatological studies, the actual measurements have not yet been digitised and published in extenso. This paper represents an important step towards filling this perceived gap in research. Here, we provide an inventory listing the availability of observed variables for the 37 stations that belonged to the society's network and discuss their historical context. Most of these observations have been digitised, and a considerable fraction has been converted and formatted. In this paper, we focus on the temperature and pressure measurements, which have been corrected and homogenised. We then demonstrate their potential for climate research by analysing two cases of extreme weather. The recovered series will have wide applications and could contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind climatic variations and extremes as well as the societal reactions to adverse weather. Even the shorter series could be ingested into reanalyses and improve the quality of large-scale reconstructions.

Methane (CH4) emissions from natural landscapes constitute roughly half of global CH4 contributions to the atmosphere, yet large uncertainties remain in the absolute magnitude and the seasonality of emission quantities and drivers. Eddy covariance (EC) measurements of CH4 flux are ideal for constraining ecosystem-scale CH4 emissions due to quasi-continuous and high-temporal-resolution CH4 flux measurements, coincident carbon dioxide, water, and energy flux measurements, lack of ecosystem disturbance, and increased availability of datasets over the last decade. Here, we (1) describe the newly published dataset, FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0, the first open-source global dataset of CH4 EC measurements (available at https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/, last access: 7 April 2021). FLUXNET-CH4 includes half-hourly and daily gap-filled and non-gap-filled aggregated CH4 fluxes and meteorological data from 79 sites globally: 42 freshwater wetlands, 6 brackish and saline wetlands, 7 formerly drained ecosystems, 7 rice paddy sites, 2 lakes, and 15 uplands. Then, we (2) evaluate FLUXNET-CH4 representativeness for freshwater wetland coverage globally because the majority of sites in FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0 are freshwater wetlands which are a substantial source of total atmospheric CH4 emissions; and (3) we provide the first global estimates of the seasonal variability and seasonality predictors of freshwater wetland CH4 fluxes. Our representativeness analysis suggests that the freshwater wetland sites in the dataset cover global wetland bioclimatic attributes (encompassing energy, moisture, and vegetation-related parameters) in arctic, boreal, and temperate regions but only sparsely cover humid tropical regions. Seasonality metrics of wetland CH4 emissions vary considerably across latitudinal bands. In freshwater wetlands (except those between 20∘ S to 20∘ N) the spring onset of elevated CH4 emissions starts 3 d earlier, and the CH4 emission season lasts 4 d longer, for each degree Celsius increase in mean annual air temperature. On average, the spring onset of increasing CH4 emissions lags behind soil warming by 1 month, with very few sites experiencing increased CH4 emissions prior to the onset of soil warming. In contrast, roughly half of these sites experience the spring onset of rising CH4 emissions prior to the spring increase in gross primary productivity (GPP). The timing of peak summer CH4 emissions does not correlate with the timing for either peak summer temperature or peak GPP. Our results provide seasonality parameters for CH4 modeling and highlight seasonality metrics that cannot be predicted by temperature or GPP (i.e., seasonality of CH4 peak). FLUXNET-CH4 is a powerful new resource for diagnosing and understanding the role of terrestrial ecosystems and climate drivers in the global CH4 cycle, and future additions of sites in tropical ecosystems and site years of data collection will provide added value to this database. Severe droughts are expected to become more frequent and persistent. However, their effect on autumn leaf senescence, a key process for deciduous trees and ecosystem functioning, is currently unclear. We hypothesized that (I) severe drought advances the onset of autumn leaf senescence in temperate deciduous trees and (II) tree species show different dynamics of autumn leaf senescence under drought. We tested these hypotheses using a manipulative experiment on beech saplings and 3 years of monitoring mature beech, birch and oak trees in Belgium. The autumn leaf senescence was derived from the seasonal pattern of the chlorophyll content index and the loss of canopy greenness using generalized additive models and piecewise linear regressions. Drought and associated heat stress and increased atmospheric aridity did not affect the onset of autumn leaf senescence in both saplings and mature trees, even if the saplings showed a high mortality and the mature trees an advanced loss of canopy greenness. We did not observe major differences among species. To synthesize, the timing of autumn leaf senescence appears conservative across years and species and even independent of drought, heat and increased atmospheric aridity. Therefore, to study autumn senescence and avoid confusion among studies, seasonal chlorophyll dynamics and loss of canopy greenness should be considered separately.

A synoptic study of the supercell of 10 July 2019, Halkidiki, Greece, shows that the gradual approach of a cold front from the north and a short-wave trough from the WSW brought into juxtaposition Saharan and polar air masses, creating a dynamical and thermodynamical environment favourable for severe convection.

Extreme states of matter that exist for a short time need probing with compact proton sources. Here, the generation of a compact MeV-energy proton source from few-cycle laser pulse interaction with narrow gas-jet target is demonstrated numerically. We realize such proton source by incorporating a gas mixture which is optimal for generation of quasimonoenergetic proton bunches. In the presented laser-plasma interaction we identify the ion acceleration from magnetic vortex, charge separation, and collisionless shock wave. The proposed particle source is excellent for applications where moderate-energy proton bunches are used at high repetition rate. We prove the applicability of this scheme for generating a pulsed spherical neutron burst with ∼100ps duration.

Abstract Background An increase has been described throughout the years in the frequency of various uncommon diseases in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Particularly late presenters are associated with a significant risk not only for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining conditions but also for non AIDS-defining diseases which aggravate the prognosis of patients. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonitis (LIP) is one of these conditions described more often after the onset of HIV epidemic. LIP is a benign polyclonal lymphoproliferative disorder of the lung with not well characterized clinical and radiographic findings. Case presentation We report the diagnostic approach and clinical progress of a newly diagnosed late presenter of HIV infection with respiratory problems in our HIV unit. The findings of computed tomography indicated the diagnosis of HIV-associated LIP, although this condition is mainly described in a normal range of CD4 cell count. Conclusion This case presentation highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and initiation of antiretroviral therapy. The increase of CD4 cell count and viral suppression may improve the symptoms of LIP.

In the last 20 years, the FLUXNET network provided unique measurements of CO2, energy and other greenhouse gas exchanges between ecosystems and atmosphere measured with the eddy covariance technique. These data have been widely used in different and heterogeneous applications, and FLUXNET became a reference source of information not only for ecological studies but also in modeling and remote sensing applications. The data are, in general, collected, processed and shared by regional networks or by single sites, and for this reason it is difficult for users interested in analyses involving multiple sites to easily access a coherent and standardized dataset. For this reason, periodic FLUXNET collections have been released in the last 15 years, every 5 to 10 years, with data standardized and shared under the same data use policy. However, the new tools available for data analysis and the need to constantly monitor the relations between ecosystem behavior and climate change require a reorganization of FLUXNET in order to increase the data interoperability, reduce the delay in the data sharing and facilitate the data use, all this while keeping in mind the great effort made by the site teams to collect these unique data and respecting the different regional and national network organizations and data policies. Here a proposal for a new organization of FLUXNET is presented with the aim of stimulating a discussion for the needed developments. In this new scheme, the regional and national networks become the pillars of the global initiative, organizing clusters and becoming responsible for the processing, preparation and distribution of datasets that users will be able to access in real time and with a machine-to-machine tool, obtaining always the most updated collection possible but keeping a high standardization and common data policy. This will also lead to an increase in the FAIRness (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability) of the FLUXNET data that will ensure a larger impact of the unique data produced and a proper data management and traceability.

The problem of underwater hull fouling has been mostly noticed by the pleasure boat owners when reducing the boat speed. In order to decrease the fouling of the underwater part of the hull, antifouling paints have been used. Some kinds of antifouling paints have become a serious environmental problem due to its very harmful effect on marine organisms and also, indirectly, on humans. Scientific research conducted in this domain has confirmed contamination by toxic compounds as a result of the usage of antifouling paints over long period of time. The paper is focused on underwater hull maintenance, especially when applying antifouling systems on pleasure crafts owned by tourists and local residents, in the example of the village ports of a small island. A survey was conducted among the residents who use ports to determine their knowledge regarding the harmful effects of biocidal coatings and the possible harmless maintenance of the underwater hull part. This paper aims to indicate the necessary equipment and procedures in the two small local ports in order to maintain pleasure boats in environmentally acceptable manner.

The sources of systematic error responsible for introducing significant biases in the eddy covariance (EC) flux computation are manifold, and their correct identification is made difficult by the lack of reference values, by the complex stochastic dynamics, and by the high level of noise characterizing raw data. This work contributes to overcoming such challenges by introducing an innovative strategy for EC data cleaning. The proposed strategy includes a set of tests aimed at detecting the presence of specific sources of systematic error, as well as an outlier detection procedure aimed at identifying aberrant flux values. Results from tests and outlier detection are integrated in such a way as to leave a large degree of flexibility in the choice of tests and of test threshold values, ensuring scalability of the whole process. The selection of best performing tests was carried out by means of Monte Carlo experiments, whereas the impact on real data was evaluated on data distributed by the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) research infrastructure. Results evidenced that the proposed procedure leads to an effective cleaning of EC flux data, avoiding the use of subjective criteria in the decision rule that specifies whether to retain or reject flux data of dubious quality. We expect that the proposed data cleaning procedure can serve as a basis towards a unified quality control strategy for EC datasets, in particular in centralized data processing pipelines where the use of robust and automated routines ensuring results reproducibility constitutes an essential prerequisite.

FLUXNET comprises globally distributed eddy-covariance-based estimates of carbon fluxes between the biosphere and the atmosphere. Since eddy covariance flux towers have a relatively small footprint and are distributed unevenly across the world, upscaling the observations is necessary to obtain global-scale estimates of biosphere–atmosphere exchange. Based on cross-consistency checks with atmospheric inversions, sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) and dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs), here we provide a systematic assessment of the latest upscaling efforts for gross primary production (GPP) and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of the FLUXCOM initiative, where different machine learning methods, forcing data sets and sets of predictor variables were employed. Spatial patterns of mean GPP are consistent across FLUXCOM and DGVM ensembles (R2>0.94 at 1∘ spatial resolution) while the majority of DGVMs show, for 70 % of the land surface, values outside the FLUXCOM range. Global mean GPP magnitudes for 2008–2010 from FLUXCOM members vary within 106 and 130 PgC yr−1 with the largest uncertainty in the tropics. Seasonal variations in independent SIF estimates agree better with FLUXCOM GPP (mean global pixel-wise R2∼0.75) than with GPP from DGVMs (mean global pixel-wise R2∼0.6). Seasonal variations in FLUXCOM NEE show good consistency with atmospheric inversion-based net land carbon fluxes, particularly for temperate and boreal regions (R2>0.92). Interannual variability of global NEE in FLUXCOM is underestimated compared to inversions and DGVMs. The FLUXCOM version which also uses meteorological inputs shows a strong co-variation in interannual patterns with inversions (R2=0.87 for 2001–2010). Mean regional NEE from FLUXCOM shows larger uptake than inversion and DGVM-based estimates, particularly in the tropics with discrepancies of up to several hundred grammes of carbon per square metre per year. These discrepancies can only partly be reconciled by carbon loss pathways that are implicit in inversions but not captured by the flux tower measurements such as carbon emissions from fires and water bodies. We hypothesize that a combination of systematic biases in the underlying eddy covariance data, in particular in tall tropical forests, and a lack of site history effects on NEE in FLUXCOM are likely responsible for the too strong tropical carbon sink estimated by FLUXCOM. Furthermore, as FLUXCOM does not account for CO2 fertilization effects, carbon flux trends are not realistic. Overall, current FLUXCOM estimates of mean annual and seasonal cycles of GPP as well as seasonal NEE variations provide useful constraints of global carbon cycling, while interannual variability patterns from FLUXCOM are valuable but require cautious interpretation. Exploring the diversity of Earth observation data and of machine learning concepts along with improved quality and quantity of flux tower measurements will facilitate further improvements of the FLUXCOM approach overall.

A wealth of evidence shows that real-world networks are endowed with the small-world property, i.e., that the maximal distance between any two of their nodes scales logarithmically rather than linearly with their size. In addition, most social networks are organized so that no individual is more than six connections apart from any other, an empirical regularity known as the six degrees of separation. Why social networks have this ultrasmall-world organization, whereby the graph’s diameter is independent of the network size over several orders of magnitude, is still unknown. We show that the “six degrees of separation” is the property featured by the equilibrium state of any network where individuals weigh between their aspiration to improve their centrality and the costs incurred in forming and maintaining connections. We show, moreover, that the emergence of such a regularity is compatible with all other features, such as clustering and scale-freeness, that normally characterize the structure of social networks. Thus, our results show how simple evolutionary rules of the kind traditionally associated with human cooperation and altruism can also account for the emergence of one of the most intriguing attributes of social networks.

We present the results of the first commissioning phase of the short-focal-length area of the Apollon laser facility (located in Saclay, France), which was performed with the first available laser beam (F2), scaled to a nominal power of 1 PW. Under the conditions that were tested, this beam delivered on-target pulses of 10 J average energy and 24 fs duration. Several diagnostics were fielded to assess the performance of the facility. The on-target focal spot and its spatial stability, the temporal intensity profile prior to the main pulse, and the resulting density gradient formed at the irradiated side of solid targets have been thoroughly characterized, with the goal of helping users design future experiments. Emissions of energetic electrons, ions, and electromagnetic radiation were recorded, showing good laser-to-target coupling efficiency and an overall performance comparable to that of similar international facilities. This will be followed in 2022 by a further commissioning stage at the multi-petawatt level.

Natural hazards affect many types of tangible assets, the most valuable of which are often residential assets, comprising buildings and household contents. Yet, information necessary to derive exposure in terms of monetary value at the level of individual houses is often not available. This includes building type, size, quality, or age. In this study, we provide a universal method for estimating exposure of residential assets using only publicly available or open data. Using building footprints (polygons) from OpenStreetMap as a starting point, we utilized high-resolution elevation models of 30 European capitals and pan-European raster datasets to construct a Bayesian-network-based model that is able to predict building height. The model was then validated with a dataset of (1) buildings in Poland endangered by sea level rise, for which the number of floors is known, and (2) a sample of Dutch and German houses affected in the past by fluvial and pluvial floods, for which usable floor space area is known. Floor space of buildings is an important basis for approximating their economic value, including household contents. Here, we provide average national-level gross replacement costs of the stock of residential assets in 30 European countries, in nominal and real prices, covering the years 2000–2017. We either relied on existing estimates of the total stock of assets or made new calculations using the perpetual inventory method, which were then translated into exposure per square metre of floor space using data on countries' dwelling stocks. The study shows that the resulting standardized residential exposure values provide much better coverage and consistency compared to previous studies.

The present study illustrates the results of an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Mediterranean Laboratory of Survey and Diagnostics for Architecture (RDA) of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAR) of the University of Catania in Italy and the Andreas Pittas Laboratories for Art Characterisation (APAC) of the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC) of the Cyprus Institute in Cyprus. The research focused on the application of an H-BIM approach in the study of a Mediterranean iconic heritage asset, the St. John Cathedral of Nicosia, built in 1662 on the remains of a monastery from the 15th century. The adopted methodology has provided the framework for a dynamic investigation, constantly evolving along several dimensions: historical, geometric spatial, architectural-constructive identification and mapping of degrade, interpretation of degenerative causes and design proposals.

Introduction Schizophrenia spectrum disorders are related with prolonged stay in hospital and high cost for treating them. As a consequence, the determination of the factors that affect the duration of hospitalization is essential. Objectives The purpose of the study is the determination of the psychosocial characteristics of inpatients in a public psychiatric hospital and their association with the duration of hospitalization. Methods A total of 103 patients with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia (according to ICD-10) participated in the study. The socio demographic characteristics were recorded and the following psychometric tools were used: NEO- Five Factor Inventory, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC25), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF).All instruments were adapted to greek population. All statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v.25. Results The median length of hospital stay was 40,7 days. The number of previous admissions (p=0,010), the type of admission (compulsory or voluntary) (p=0,017), the physical restrain (p=0,043), the duration of restrain (p=0,002) as well as the existence of social support networks and in particular social support from friends (p=0,018), seem to affect the duration of hospitalization. Conclusions The present study underlines the signification of the psychosocial factors that could contribute to the prediction of longer hospitals stays, the planning of appropriate interventions and as a result the reduction of hospital costs.

Introduction People with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) may frequently require treatment with psychotropic medications, but the underlying medical condition and possible interaction with medical treatments might pose serious safety issues. Objectives To review the direct and indirect evidence on the safety of psychotropic drugs in people with COVID-19 and provide practical recommendations for frontline clinicians. Methods An international, multi-disciplinary working group was established with the aim of producing evidence-based recommendations on the management of psychotropic medications in people with COVID-19, following the WHO Rapid Advice Guidelines methodology in the context of a public health emergency. Evidence retrieved was focused on the risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, infective, hemostatic, and consciousness alterations related to the use of psychotropic medications. Furthermore, drug-drug interactions between psychotropic and medical treatments used in people with COVID-19 was reviewed and critically discussed by the working group. Results The analysis of available evidence, although indirect, showed that all classes of psychotropic medications might carry relevant safety risks for people with COVID-19. The working group produced a set of 12 recommendations to support clinicians in the assessment of the anticipated risk of psychotropic-related unfavourable events, and how to practically manage this risk, including when it is appropriate to avoid, withdraw, switch, or adjust the dose of the medication. Conclusions The present evidence-based recommendations will improve the quality of psychiatric care in people with COVID-19, allowing an appropriate management of the medical condition without worsening the psychiatric condition and vice versa. Introduction Panic disorder is among the most prevalent anxiety diseases. Although psychotherapy is recommended as first-line treatment for panic disorder, little is known about the relative efficacy of different types of psychotherapies. Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of different types of psychotherapies for adults suffering from panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. Methods We are conducting a systematic network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examining panic disorder. A comprehensive search was performed to identify relevant studies. The primary efficacy outcome is anxiety symptoms at study endpoint. The primary acceptability outcome is all-cause trial discontinuation at endpoint. Pairwise and network meta-analysis will be conducted. We are considering any kind of psychotherapy delivered by any therapist, as long as they were trained to deliver the therapy, or as self-help. Results To date we have identified 126 panic disorder and agoraphobia trials. The publication time span ranges from 1968 to 2020. We are now extracting data to provide an overview of the included study characteristics. The statistical analysis will be conducted between December 2020 and January 2021, and its results presented for the first time at the forthcoming 2021 EPA congress. Conclusions 126 trials on psychotherapy for panic disorders in adults are available. Because of this huge body of knowledge, it is important that the results of these studies are summarized using network meta-analytic techniques. The findings of this study will guide future research as knowledge gaps will be easily identified. Moreover, policymakers will have the opportunity to use this summarized knowledge to inform evidence-based decision making. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Modern eddy covariance (EC) systems collect high-frequency data (10–20 Hz) via digital outputs of instruments. This is an important evolution with respect to the traditional and widely used mixed analog/digital systems, as fully digital systems help overcome the traditional limitations of transmission reliability, data quality, and completeness of the datasets.However, fully digital acquisition introduces a new problem for guaranteeing data synchronicity when the clocks of the involved devices themselves cannot be synchronized, which is often the case with instruments providing data via serial or Ethernet connectivity in a streaming mode. In this paper, we suggest that, when assembling EC systems in-house, aspects related to timing issues need to be carefully considered to avoid significant flux biases.By means of a simulation study, we found that, in most cases, random timing errors can safely be neglected, as they do not impact fluxes significantly. At the same time, systematic timing errors potentially arising in asynchronous systems can effectively act as filters leading to significant flux underestimations, as large as 10 %, by means of attenuation of high-frequency flux contributions. We characterized the transfer function of such filters as a function of the error magnitude and found cutoff frequencies as low as 1 Hz, implying that synchronization errors can dominate high-frequency attenuations in open- and enclosed-path EC systems. In most cases, such timing errors neither be detected nor characterized a posteriori. Therefore, it is important to test the ability of traditional and prospective EC data logging systems to assure the required synchronicity and propose a procedure to implement such a test relying on readily available equipment.

Abstract 2-Substituted 4H-chromeno[3,4-d]oxazol-4-ones are prepared from 4-hydroxy-3-nitrocoumarin and acids by one-pot reaction in the presence of PPh3 and P2O5 under microwave irradiation or by one-pot two-step reactions in the presence of Pd/C and hydrogen and then P2O5 under microwave irradiation. The fused oxazolocoumarins were also synthesized from 3-amido-4-hydroxycoumarins and P2O5 under microwave irradiation. The 3-amido-4-hydroxycoumarins are obtained almost quantitatively from 4-hydroxy-3-nitrocoumarin, acids and PPh3 under microwave irradiation, or in the presence of Pd/C and H2 on heating. Preliminary biological tests indicate significant inhibition of soybean lipoxygenase and antilipid peroxidation for both oxazolocoumarins and o-hydroxyamidocoumarins.
