Forage maize (Zea mays L.) is often grown year after year on the same land on many intensive dairy farms in north-west Europe. This results in agronomical problems such as weed resistance and decline of soil quality, which may be solved by ley-arable farming. In the current study, forage maize was grown at different nitrogen (N) fertilization levels for 3 years on permanent arable land and on temporary arable land after ploughing out different types of grass–clover swards. Swards differed in management (grazing or cutting) and age (temporary or permanent). Maize yield and soil residual mineral N content were measured after the maize harvest. There was no effect on maize yield of the management of ploughed-out grass–clover swards but a clear effect of the age of grass–clover swards. The N fertilizer replacement value (NFRV) of all ploughed grass–clover swards was >170 kg N/ha in the first year after ploughing. In the third year after ploughing, NFRV of the permanent sward still exceeded 200 kg N/ha, whereas that of the temporary swards decreased to 30 kg N/ha on average. Soil residual nitrate (NO3−) remained below the local, legal threshold of 90 kg NO3− N/ha except for the ploughed-out permanent sward in the third year after ploughing (166 kg NO3− N/ha). The current study highlights the potential of forage maize – ley rotations in saving fertilizer N. Alternative management practices such as no-tillage compared to conventional tillage are expected to recover or increase soil quality and productivity, even though all of these aspects are rarely studied together. Long-term field experiments (LTEs) enable analysis of alternative management practices over time. This study investigated a total of 251 European LTEs in which alternative management practices such as crop rotation, catch crops, cover crops/green manure, no-tillage, non-inversion tillage and organic fertilization were applied. Response ratios of indicators for soil quality, climate change and productivity between alternative and reference management practices were derived from a total of 260 publications. Both positive and negative effects of alternative management practices on the different indicators were shown and, as expected, no alternative management practice could comply with all objectives simultaneously. Productivity was hampered by non-inversion tillage, FYM amendments and incorporation of crop residues. SOC contents were increased significantly following organic fertilizers and non-inversion tillage. GHG emissions were increased by slurry application and incorporation of crop residues. Our study showed that alternative management practices beneficial to one group of indicators (e.g. organic fertilizers for biological soil quality indicators) are not necessarily beneficial to other indicators (e.g. increase of crop yields). We conclude that LTEs are valuable for finding ways forward in protecting European soils as well as finding evidence-based alternative management practices for the future; however, experiments should focus more on biological soil quality indicators as well as GHG emissions to enable better evaluation of trade-offs and mutual benefits of management practices. Agricultural soils in northwest Europe as well as in parts of the USA have excessive P levels. To meet European environmental standards on nutrient leaching in soils with a high P load, the total P content of manures and composts limits their application rate. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of feedstock composition on C/P ratio and P availability in mature compost. A functional compost with a high C/P ratio and a high organic matter content is a valuable tool for maintaining soil fertility. We produced composts with C/P ratios of 60-180 and high organic matter contents, i.e., 43-72% on dry matter basis. P concentration in the compost increased and C/P ratio decreased due to mass reduction during the composting process, which was determined by the biochemical composition, i.e., the biodegradation potential of the feedstock mixture. The feedstock selection also had indirect effects on P availability due to its effect on compost characteristics such as pH, which strongly reduced the readily available P concentrations at $$\text{pH}_{\text{H}_{2} {\text{O}}}$$ > 8.5. Compost pH was found to be an important indicator for readily available P concentrations in the studied composts with $$\text{pH}_{\text{H}_{2} {\text{O}}}$$ between 7.1 and 9.4, and was positively related to total Ca content in the compost, indicating an interaction between Ca and P. In contrast, P availability was not related to the organic matter content of the composts. Mixing biochar (pyrolyzed organic matter) into the compost further reduced the readily available P in two types of compost by 10-64%, even after addition of a small amount of additional mineral P. This was observed for two types of biochar with different chemical composition. The reduction was higher for the biochar with the highest Ca, Fe and Al concentrations, indicating the role of these elements for P binding in the biochar-blended compost. Compost application can contribute to agricultural sustainability. Municipal solid waste compost has been the subject of most of the research done so far. Farm compost (FC) has a different composition. It is made of varying ingredients available on the farm, e.g., wood chips and bark, manure, straw, crop residues and surplus grass and soil. Information is currently lacking on the agronomic value and environmental impact of FC. Therefore, a long-term field experiment was established to quantify the effect of FC application on crop performance and soil quality in a crop rotation of potatoes, fodder beet, forage maize and Brussels sprouts. This paper presents the results of the first four years of the ongoing field trial. In the fourth year of the experiment, the annual FC amendment resulted in a significant increase in dry matter yield for all four crops. Our results suggested that the positive effect of continual FC application was based on a combination of a slow release of nitrogen and providing better growing opportunities to the crops. Previous research showed that adding biochar at the onset of the composting process alleviates this process and reduces emissions. The objective of this study was to evaluate in a field trial whether this compost with biochar applied during the process (i.e., biochar-blended compost) has added value compared to compost or biochar alone on chemical, physical and biological soil properties and crop yield. A single application of biochar, compost and biochar-blended (BB) compost increased the C content of the top soil in the long term, but only compost and biochar-blended compost had a lasting effect on pH and the K content. Two to 4 years after a single application of all three amendments in the field, the soil microbial biomass, richness, diversity and community composition remained unchanged. Due to intensive soil tillage, biochar migrated to subsoil already after 2 growing seasons, thus increasing the C sequestration in subsoil. We conclude that in general, the biochar-blended compost outperformed biochar and had a similar effect as the compost. Adding biochar at the onset of composting has proven to be beneficial for this process, and when added to the soil, this biochar-blended (BB) compost has outperformed biochar on soil quality but had a similar effect as the compost. Because soil quality gets more and more attention as an important tool for soil health, pot trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of compost and biochar alone, and biochar-blended (BB) compost on disease suppression. In addition, it was investigated whether the disease suppression was associated with changes in soil quality (chemical, physical and biological soil properties). The two selected bio-assays were Rhizoctonia solani (basal rot) on lettuce and potato cyst nematodes (PCN) on potato. Both compost and BB compost released mineral N and thus increased lettuce and potato yield but biochar did not. None of the amendments affected the susceptibly of lettuce leaves to basal rot. Compost suppressed PCN while biochar had no effect on PCN reproduction. Moreover, BB compost reduced the suppressing effect of compost. We suggest that the inhibitory effect of biochar blended in compost might be attributed to the fungal biomass which was not increased in the BB compost-amended soil compared to compost-amended soil, and/or the absorbance of suppressive compounds by the high surface area of biochar. Interestingly, all three amendments reduced the water evaporation from the soil surface, which can have important implications for drought stress of plants. Abstract: Eight fertilization strategies were compared in a field trial on Alfisol in Belgium (humid temperate climate): cattle slurry (CSL); farmyard manure (FYM); vegetable, fruit and garden waste compost (VFG); high C/N farm compost (FCP1); low C/N farm compost (FCP2); exclusively mineral fertilizer (MIN N); no fertilization (NF+), no fertilization and no crop (NF−). After five growing seasons, VFG resulted in the highest soil organic C (1.46% SOC) and total N contents (0.117%TN). SOC and TN contents of the MIN N plots, on the other hand, remained unchanged and were even similar to those of NF+ plots, despite greater biomass production on the MIN N plots than on the NF+ plots. Application of organic matter mostly increased dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase and β-glucosaminidase activity, but only FYM raised the activity of all three enzymes significantly compared to MIN N. Of the five organic amendments tested, only VFG suppressed Rhizoctonia solani (65% suppressiveness). Plots treated with FCP1, on the other hand, were highly conducive to R. solani (28.3% suppressiveness). Suppressiveness against R. solani probably depended on the maturity and cellulose content of the organic amendments. Highest microbial biomass C contents were found in the VFG plots. PLFA 16:1ω5c contents sensitively reacted to the different treatments and were significantly higher in VFG than in MIN N plots (3.84 and 2.20nmolg−1 dry soil, respectively). Finally, a soil quality index was developed using stepwise canonical discriminant analysis. β-glucosaminidase and β-glucosidase activity, and TN content were the most important parameters of the index. According to this index, FYM resulted in a significantly higher soil quality than the other treatments. We conclude that farmyard manure seems to be the preferred organic amendment for maintaining soil quality in arable fields under temperate climatic conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Agricultural practices enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) show potential to buffer negative effects of climate change on forage grass performance. We tested this by subjecting five forage grass varieties differing in fodder quality and drought/flooding resistance to increased persistence in summer precipitation regimes (PR) across sandy and sandy-loam soils from either permanent (high SOC) or temporary grasslands (low SOC) in adjacent parcels. Over the course of two consecutive summers, monoculture mesocosms were subjected to rainy/dry weather alternation either every 3 days or every 30 days, whilst keeping total precipitation equal. Increased PR persistence induced species-specific drought damage and productivity declines. Soils from permanent grasslands with elevated SOC buffered plant quality, but buffering effects of SOC on drought damage, nutrient availability and yield differed between texture classes. In the more persistent PR, Festuca arundinacea FERMINA was the most productive species but had the lowest quality under both ample water supply and mild soil drought, whilst under the most intense soil droughts, Festulolium FESTILO maintained the highest yields. The hybrid Lolium × boucheanum kunth MELCOMBI had intermediate productivity and both Lolium perenne varieties showed the lowest yields under soil drought, but the highest forage quality (especially the tetraploid variety MELFORCE). Performance varied with plant maturity stage and across seasons/years and was driven by altered water and nutrient availability and related nitrogen nutrition among species during drought and upon rewetting. Moreover, whilst permanent grassland soils showed the most consistent positive effects on plant performance, their available water capacity also declined under increased PR persistence. Agricultural Long-Term Experiments (LTEs) are crucial agricultural research infrastructures for monitoring the long term effects of management and environment on crop production and soil resources. We have compiled the meta-information of 616 LTEs from 30 different countries across Europe with a duration of typically 20 years, including clustered information of the European LTEs in different categories (management operations, land use, duration, status, etc.). It consists of the updated version of the dataset published by Grosse et al., (2020) but is extended by further LTE metadata, categories and research themes. Each set of metadata consists of up to 49 different attributes (categorical or numeric). Collected attributes were analyzed according to several research themes, including fertilization, crop rotation and tillage treatments. The collection of individual metadata was enlarged by the recent agreement between the BonaRes (www.bonares.de) and EJP SOIL (www.ejpsoil.eu) groups into the most comprehensive dataset in Europe, providing access to LTE and other, shorter running experiments. This dataset centralized past and existing information usually dispersed across several national actors. As such, it provides an extensive database that can be used by decision-makers, scientists, LTE owners and the public. We investigated the use of biochar (10% on a dry weight basis) to improve the composting process and/or the compost quality by adding it to either the feedstock mixture or the mature compost. The addition of biochar to the feedstocks was essayed in a full scale trial using a mixture of green waste and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Addition of biochar to mature compost was performed in a medium scale experiment. The use of biochar, even in small amounts, changed the composting process and the properties of the end products. However these effects depended on the time of application. We observed a faster decomposition in the bio-oxidative phase and lower greenhouse gas emissions when biochar was added at the beginning of the composting process, and a reduction in readily available P when biochar was applied during compost storage. Biochar as a means to increase the C content of the compost was only effective during compost storage. The P fertilizer replacement value of the compost with and without biochar was tested in a plant trial with annual ryegrass.
