4. Multidecadal shifts in forest plant diversity and community composition across glacial landforms in northern lower Michigan, USA

Abstract

Understanding how plant community assemblage is affected by spatial and temporal patterns is crucial to understanding forest ecosystem responses to disturbance, including future climate change. In this article, we tracked how diversity and composition are distributed through space and time in a midsuccessional mixed hardwood forest in northern lower Michigan, United States. This region's geographically and abiotically distinct glacial landforms influence both the spatial and temporal dynamics of its forest communities. Vegetation sampling plots (n = 87) were established at the University of Michigan Biological Station in 1990 and resampled in 2015. Vegetation in the overstory, sapling, and groundcover layers was censused. Abiotic variables, including elevation, pH, and soil nutrients, were measured in a subset of plots (n = 40). There were strong differences in diversity and community composition among glacial landforms, with the moraine having a 31% greater species richness in the groundcover layer compared with those of the other glacial landforms. Surprisingly, plant communities across all three vegetation layers showed little change over the 25-year period, and we found no evidence of differences in successional rates among glacial landforms. Our findings indicate that glacial landforms have a large influence on the production and maintenance of local plant diversity and community composition in this area and suggest that successional dynamics may manifest themselves over much longer time periods in these northern biomes. Il est crucial de decouvrir de quelle facon l'assemblage des communautes vegetales est influence par des configurations spatiales et temporelles pour comprendre les reactions des ecosystemes terrestres aux perturbations, incluant le changement climatique a venir. Dans cet article, nous avons suivi de quelle facon la diversite et la composition sont reparties dans le temps et l'espace dans une foret feuillue mixte en milieu de succession dans le nord du Michigan inferieur, aux Etats-Unis. Les formations glaciaires distinctes du point de vue geographique et abiotique de cette region influencent la dynamique spatiale et temporelle de ses communautes forestieres. Des placettes (n = 87) servant a echantillonner la vegetation ont ete etablies a la station biologique de l'Universite du Michigan en 1990 et reechantillonnees en 2015. La vegetation presente dans la strate dominante, celle des gaules et celle du couvert vegetal au sol a ete recensee. Les variables abiotiques, incluant l'altitude, le pH et les elements nutritifs du sol, ont ete mesurees dans un sous-ensemble (n = 40) de placettes. Il y avait d'importantes differences dans la diversite et la composition des communautes selon la formation glaciaire : la richesse en especes du couvert vegetal au sol etait 31 % plus elevee sur la moraine que sur les autres formations glaciaires. Etonnamment, les communautes vegetales dans les trois strates de vegetation ont tres peu change durant la periode de 25 ans et nous n'avons trouve aucun indice indiquant que le taux de succession differe selon le type de formation glaciaire. Nos resultats montrent que les formations glaciaires ont exerce une grande influence sur la production et le maintien de la diversite locale de la vegetation ainsi que sur la composition des communautes dans cette region et indiquent aussi que la dynamique successionnelle peut se manifester sur des periodes de temps beaucoup plus longues dans ces biomes nordiques. Abstract

Canopies of forest ecosystems frequently intercept and retain >50% of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. Atmospheric N reaching the forest floor often is retained in litter and soil pools, but if atmospheric N retained by the canopy is assimilated through foliar uptake, then N inputs may have greater effects on tree N requirements and growth than suggested by N additions to forest floors alone. To quantify foliar and root uptake of N deposition by trees and to determine patterns of within-tree N allocation, we performed a tightly controlled [sup.15]N tracer experiment using constructed, seminatural forest mesocosms. Mesocosms contained seedling trees, which assimilated modest amounts of the aqueous [sup.15]N[H.sub.4]Cl applied to their canopies and surrounding soils (10% and 14%, respectively). The seedlings allocated most of the [sup.15]N that they took up to leaf biomass (40%-50%), regardless of uptake pathway. Soil pools retained >80% of the [sup.15]N applied to mesocosm forest floors, with soil organic matter concentration explaining 79% of the variation in soil [sup.15]N recovery across sampling depths. The low value for [sup.15]N movement into biomass and its retention in soil pools suggests that atmospheric N deposition measured at a nearby forest site has no short-term effects on tree N content or growth. La N atmospherique arrivant sur le parterre forestier se voit souvent retenu par la litiere et les pools edaphiques, mais si la N atmospherique retenu par la canopee est assimilee par absorption foliaire, les entrees d'azote pourraient exercer des effets plus importants sur les besoins en N de l'arbre et sur la croissance, que ce que suggere les additions de N au sol isolement. Pour quantifier l'absorption foliaire et racinaire de la deposition de N par les arbres, les auteurs ont realise une experience rigoureusement controlee avec le traceur [sup.15]N en utilisant des mesocosmes forestiers eriges semi-naturels. 47. Contribution of atmospheric nitrogen deposition to net primary productivity in a northern hardwood forest

Abstract

Net primary productivity (NPP) in northern temperate forests is an important part of the global carbon cycle. Because NPP often is limited by nitrogen (N), atmospheric N deposition ([N.sub.dep]) may increase forest NPP. At a northern hardwood forest site in northern Lower Michigan, USA, we quantified rates of N supply by [N.sub.dep], canopy retention of [N.sub.dep] ([N.sub.cr]), and soil [N.sub.cr] N mineralization ([N.sub.min]); calculated the N requirement of NPP; and estimated the fraction of NPP that could be attributed to atmospheric N inputs. [N.sub.cr] N mineralization supplied 42.6 kg N * [ha.sup.-1] * [year.sup.-1] (84% of the NPP N requirement), and [N.sub.dep] averaged 7.5 kg N * [ha.sup.-1] * [year.sup.-1] (15%). The forest canopy retained 38% of [N.sub.dep] ([N.sub.cr] = 2.8 kg N * [ha.sup.-1] * [year.sup.-1]), primarily in the forms of organic N and N[H.sub.4]-N. Fine root (62%) and leaf (31%) N requirements dominated the NPP N requirement of 50.7 kg N * [ha.sup.-1] * [year.sup.-1]. Annual N supply by the processes we measured agreed very closely with the NPP N requirement, suggesting that internally cycled N and N of atmospheric origin contribute to the N nutrition of this forest. Our results indicate that up to 15% of the NPP at this site may be driven by atmospheric N inputs. Abstract

Globally, soils store two to three times as much carbon as currently resides in the atmosphere, and it is critical to understand how soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and uptake will respond to ongoing climate change. In particular, the soil-to-atmosphere CO(2)flux, commonly though imprecisely termed soil respiration (R-S), is one of the largest carbon fluxes in the Earth system. An increasing number of high-frequencyR(S)measurements (typically, from an automated system with hourly sampling) have been made over the last two decades; an increasing number of methane measurements are being made with such systems as well. Such high frequency data are an invaluable resource for understanding GHG fluxes, but lack a central database or repository. Here we describe the lightweight, open-source COSORE (COntinuous SOil REspiration) database and software, that focuses on automated, continuous and long-term GHG flux datasets, and is intended to serve as a community resource for earth sciences, climate change syntheses and model evaluation. Contributed datasets are mapped to a single, consistent standard, with metadata on contributors, geographic location, measurement conditions and ancillary data. The design emphasizes the importance of reproducibility, scientific transparency and open access to data. While being oriented towards continuously measuredR(S), the database design accommodates other soil-atmosphere measurements (e.g. ecosystem respiration, chamber-measured net ecosystem exchange, methane fluxes) as well as experimental treatments (heterotrophic only, etc.). We give brief examples of the types of analyses possible using this new community resource and describe its accompanying R software package.
