In addition to filtering some sediments, hydrophobic wood sponges can also absorb many organic solvents, particularly crude oil. The leakage of crude oil poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem, and oil mixed with water also generates great danger for its use. From the perspective of low cost and high performance, wood sponges exhibit great potential for dealing with crude oil pollution. Wood sponge is a renewable material. With a highly oriented layered structure and a highly compressible three-dimensional porous frame, wood sponges are extremely hydrophobic, making them ideal for oil–water separation. Currently, the most common approach for creating wood sponge is to first destroy the wood cell wall to obtain a porous-oriented layered structure and then enhance the oil–water separation ability via superhydrophobic treatment. Wood sponge prepared using various experimental methods and different natural woods exhibits distinctive properties in regards to robustness, compressibility, fatigue resistance, and oil absorption ability. As an aerogel material, wood sponge offers multi-action (absorption, filtration) and reusable oil–water separation functions. This paper introduces the advantages of the use of wood sponge for oil–water separation. The physical and chemical properties of wood sponge and its mechanism of adsorbing crude oil are explained. Transparent films with excellent antibacterial properties and strong mechanical properties are highly sought after in packaging applications. In this study, Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles were introduced into a mixed solution of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a Ag/SiO2-CS-PVA transparent film was developed. The excellent properties of the film were confirmed by light transmittance, water contact angle tests and tensile tests. In addition, for the antibacterial test, the antibacterial properties of the sample against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) were explored, and the average size of the bacteriostatic circle was measured by the cross method. Substantial studies have demonstrated that left atrial (LA) enlargement was a robust predictor of atrial fibrillation (AF) and obesity was a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of body mass index (BMI) on LA dimension in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) remains unclear.

With the advancement of new food processing technology, triploid technology has emerged as a viable option to enhance plant yield and improve crop stress resistance. However, like many emerging technologies, food produced using triploid technology has sparked controversy regarding its safety since its inception. Particularly, consumers generally have a limited understanding of new technologies employed in food production, leading to concerns about potential risks and uncertainties associated with these technologies. Such concerns can significantly impact consumers' acceptance and purchasing intentions toward foods modified using new technologies. This study collected 375 questionnaires from both online and offline sources and conducted a detailed analysis of consumers' demographic variables, fear degree regarding triploid food, social trust, and concerns about food safety. SPSS and AMOS software were utilized for reliability and validity analysis, variance analysis, multiple comparisons, and confirmatory factor analysis. A structural equation model was developed to comprehensively examine consumers' risk perception of triploid food and its influencing factors. The results indicate that consumers' risk perception of triploid food is influenced by various factors. Notably, significant differences were found in consumers' risk perception of triploid food based on age, educational background, residency, and employment status. Additionally, this study identified a negative correlation between consumers' risk perception of triploid food and their levels of fear and social trust. Background: The hybrid strategy of a combination of drug‐eluting stent (DES) and drug‐coated balloon (DCB) is promising for the treatment of de novo diffuse coronary artery disease (CAD). Hypothesis: To investigate the efficacy and functional results of hybrid strategy. Methods: This case series study included patients treated with a hybrid approach for de novo diffuse CAD between February 2017 and November 2021. Postprocedural quantitative flow ratio (QFR) was used to evaluate the functional results. The primary endpoint was procedural success rate. The secondary endpoints were major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) including cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI) (including peri‐procedural MI), and target vessel revascularization. Results: A total of 109 patients with 114 lesions were treated. DES and DCB were commonly used in larger proximal segments and smaller distal segments, respectively. The mean QFR value was 0.9 ± 0.1 and 105 patients (96.3%) had values >0.8 in all the treated vessels. Procedural success was achieved in 106 (97.2%) patients. No cases of cardiac death were reported at a median follow‐up of 19 months. Spontaneous MI occurred in three (2.8%) patients and target vessel revascularization in six (5.5%) patients. Estimated 2‐year rate of MACE excluding peri‐procedural MI was higher in the group with lower QFR value (12.1 ± 5.7% vs. 5.6 ± 4.4%, log‐rank p =.035) (cut‐off value 0.9). Conclusion: Hybrid strategy is a promising approach for the treatment of de novo diffuse CAD. Postprocedural QFR has some implications for prognosis and may be helpful in guiding this approach. The implementation of waste-sorting policy is conducive to improving residents' working and living environments, and has positive implications for promoting green development and building in China. As one of the main factors in the implementation of waste-sorting policy, residents' awareness of and behavior regarding waste sorting and disposal affects its promotion, while policies, incentives and infrastructure will affect residents' enthusiasm for implementing waste sorting. Taking Maanshan City in Anhui Province as a case study, this paper discusses the current state of progress towards ecological civilization in China; the influence of policy promotion on residents' perception of it; the correlation between residents' age and their understanding of waste classification; and the correlation between residents' enthusiasm, policies and green infrastructure; and puts forward some suggestions for how to enhance green infrastructure and improve residents' perceptions of waste classification in the future. Atherosclerosis is the narrowing of the arteries due to the formation of fatty plaques, which is the main cause of myocardial infarction and stroke. It is important to develop an in vitro model that can combine multiple-type cell co-culture, vessel wall-like structure, and fluid condition to simulate the processes of atherosclerosis. Herein, we used a simple microfluidic chip made of three polydimethylsiloxane layers to co-culture endothelial and smooth muscle cells in a flat rectangular microchannel. After being connected with a circulating culture medium driven by a peristaltic pump, the flat microchannel was deformed to a tunnel-like macrochannel. The fluid pressure and shear stress applied on the cells in the deformed macrochannel can be varied by adjusting the circulating flow rate and the thickness of the middle layer. Under three levels of the pressure (65, 131, and 196 mm Hg) or shear stress (0.99, 4.78, and 24 dyne/cm2) conditions, a series of atherosclerosis-related events, including endothelial cell junction, pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion, monocyte adhesion, and lipid accumulation, were investigated. The atherosclerosis-related results showed that the medium pressure or shear stress exhibited a relatively weak pro-atherosclerotic effect in a V-shaped trend. To demonstrate the potential in drug screen, the effects of three well-known anti-atherosclerotic drugs (atorvastatin, tetramethylpyrazine, and high-density lipoprotein) on the lipid accumulation and pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion were evaluated under a strong pro-atherosclerotic fluid condition (65 mm Hg, 0.99 dyne/cm2). Background: Data regarding the association between sleep apnea (SA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are still limited. We aim to investigate the association of both types of SA, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA), and nocturnal hypoxemia with AF in HCM. Methods: A total of 606 patients with HCM who underwent sleep evaluations were included. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between sleep disorder and AF. Results: SA was presented in 363 (59.9%) patients, of whom 337 (55.6%) had OSA and 26 (4.3%) had CSA. Patients with SA were older, more often male, had a higher body mass index, and more clinical comorbidities. Prevalence of AF was higher in patients with CSA than patients with OSA and without SA (50.0% versus 24.9% and 12.8%, p < 0.001). After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cigarette use, New York Heart Association class and severity of mitral regurgitation, SA (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.09–2.94) and nocturnal hypoxemia (higher tertile of percentage of total sleep time with oxygen saturation < 90% [OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.05–3.12] compared with lower tertile) were significantly associated with AF. The association was much stronger in the CSA group (OR, 3.98; 95% CI, 1.56–10.13) than in OSA group (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.01–2.76). Similar associations were observed when analyses were restricted to persistent/permanent AF. Conclusion: Both types of SA and nocturnal hypoxemia were independently associated with AF. Because carbonated drinks contain large volumes of CO2 gas, the container needs to bear a tremendous pressure from the inside of the bottle.If the stress exceeds the bearing limit, the material will show the phenomenon of local cracking and liquid overflow.For the structural design, the method of manual adjustment before automatic adjustment was adopted. First, through manual optimization, the initial optimal parameter combination was as follows:the inner diameter of the bottle bottom was 17 mm, the dip angle of the valley bottom was 81°, the deepest part of the valley bottom was 25 mm, and the outer diameter was 27 mm. Comsol software was used for automatic optimization. Compared with the original bottle bottom, the total maximum principal stress and total elastic strain energy in the bottle bottom after manual–automatic double optimization decreased by 69.4% and 40.0%, respectively, and the displacement caused by deformation decreased by 0.60 mm (74.1%). Cuscuta chinensis Lam. (CCL) is a medicinal herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases, including age-dependent vision-threatening retinal degenerative disorders that involve irreversible loss of the first-order retinal neurons, photoreceptors. However, evidence is lacking if CCL is pharmacologically active at protecting against loss of photoreceptors and photoreceptor degeneration-associated retinal structural and functional impairment. The current study thus evaluates the potential photoreceptor protective effects of CCL to better support its clinical applications in the prevention and treatment of photoreceptor degenerative diseases. Non-invasive full-retinal optical coherence tomography, electroretinography, histological examination, immunohistochemistry and real-time qPCR analysis were performed to assess the retinal protective effects of CCL in light-exposed BALB/c mice characterized by photooxidative stress-mediated photoreceptor loss and associated retinal morphological and functional impairment. The results showed that CCL treatment protected against light-induced degeneration of the photoreceptor structure and deterioration of the retinal function. Furthermore, CCL treatment increased the retinal expression of rhodopsin, S-opsin and M-opsin, supporting the protective effects of CCL in both rod and cone photoreceptors. CCL treatment suppressed photoreceptor cell death in the light-exposed retinas. The morphological integrity of the second-order retinal neurons was also preserved as a result of CCL treatment. In addition, CCL treatment attenuated light-induced reactive müller gliosis, microglial activation and inflammation in the retina. In conclusion, the current work demonstrates for the first time that CCL protects against photooxidative stress-mediated degeneration of photoreceptors and associated disturbance of structural, functional and immune homeostasis of the retina. To reveal the influence of different substituents on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and photophysical properties of 4′-N, N-dimethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (DMA3HF), two novel molecules (DMA3HF-CN and DMA3HF-NH2) were designed by introducing the classical electron-withdrawing group cyano (-CN) and electron-donating group amino (-NH2). The three molecules in the acetonitrile phase were systematically researched by applying the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The excited-state hydrogen bond enhancement mechanism was confirmed, and the hydrogen bond intensity followed the decreasing order of DMA3HF-NH2 > DMA3HF > DMA3HF-CN, which can be explained at the electronic level by natural bond orbital, fuzzy bond order, and frontier molecular orbital analyses. Moreover, we found from the electronic spectra that the fluorescence intensity of the three molecules in keto form is relatively strong. Moreover, the calculated absorption properties indicated that introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN could significantly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band. In summary, the introduction of an electron-donating group -NH2 can promote the ESIPT reaction of DMA3HF, without changing the photophysical properties, while introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN can greatly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band, but hinders the occurrence of the ESIPT reaction. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a highly prevalent metabolic disorder. Currently, there are no effective pharmacotherapeutic options for preventing and treating NASH. Portulaca oleracea L. (POL) is an edible herb that has been used for preventing and treating some metabolic disorders in China, but the bioactive constituents in POL and the related mechanisms for treating NASH are still unclear. Here, a comprehensive research strategy was used to identify the core genes and the key constituents in POL for treating NASH, via integrating bioinformatics analysis and experimental pharmacology both in vitro and in vivo. The phenotypes and mechanisms of POL were carefully investigated by performing a set of in vivo and in vitro experiments. Bioinformatics analysis suggested that prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) was the core target and myricetin (Myr) was the key constituent in POL for treating NASH. In NASH mice model induced by methionine choline deficiency diet, POL significantly alleviated hepatic steatosis and liver injury. In free fatty acids-induced hepatocytes, POL and Myr significantly down-regulated the expression of PTGS2, decreased the number of lipid droplets, and regulated the mRNA expression of lipid synthesis and homeostasis genes, including FASN , CPT1a , SERBP1c , ACC1 , and SCD1. In lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophages, POL and Myr significantly reduced the expression of PTGS2 and blocked the secretion of inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β. Further investigations demonstrate that Myr acts as both suppressor and inhibitor of PTGS2. Collectively, POL and its major component Myr can ameliorate NASH via down-regulating and inhibiting PTGS2, suggesting that POL and Myr can be developed as novel medicines for treating NASH. Purpose: Owing to the important mechanistic implications in the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure, inflammation has been proposed as a druggable target for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Ginseng is a widely used medicinal herb for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. As one of the major chemical components of ginseng, ginsenoside Rb1 (Rb1) contributes to the cardiovascular effects of ginseng. Meanwhile, anti-inflammatory activity of Rb1 has also been documented. The current work aims to further delineate the pharmacological implications of Rb1 in the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy. Methods: Angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion mouse model was adopted to investigate the effects of Rb1 on cardiac hypertrophic remodeling and associated inflammation in vivo. Furthermore, the mechanisms of actions of Rb1 in modulating the hypertrophic and inflammatory responses were investigated in cardiomyocytes and macrophages, respectively. Results: Rb1 mitigates Ang II–induced cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac inflammation and systemic inflammation in vivo. In cardiomyocytes, Rb1 directly counteracts the pro-hypertrophic effects of Ang II and phenylephrine and maintains the mitochondrial function. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages, Rb1 decreases the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1/2 (MEK1/2) and reduces the production of inflammation mediators such as interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Rb1 also suppresses the expression of pro-hypertrophic microRNA-155 (miR-155) in LPS- or Ang II-stimulated macrophages. Furthermore, in activated macrophages, miR-155 is in part accountable for the suppressive effect of Rb1 on the production of IL-6, an inflammation mediator with pro-hypertrophic functions in the heart. Conclusion: The work here provides novel experimental evidence supporting the notion that Rb1 protects against cardiac hypertrophy in part through suppressing the inflammatory mechanisms that promotes the pathological remodeling of the heart. Myocardial fibrosis (MF) is considered a result of microvascular dysfunction in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs), capable of degrading collagen, directly participate in the development of MF. First we investigated the relationships among MF, microvascular rarefaction, and MMPs. Then we assessed the prognostic value of MF-related circulating biomarkers. Fifty-five obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM) patients were enrolled after surgical myectomy. Myocardial samples were performed with Masson's trichrome staining and immunohistochemical procedures for collagen volume fraction and microvascular density, respectively. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to assess myocardial and plasma of MMP-2, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 and plasma C-terminal propeptide of procollagen type Ⅰ (PICP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type Ⅰ collagen (ICTP) levels. The composite cardiovascular endpoint consisted of new-onset atrial fibrillation, heart failure requiring hospitalization, and all-cause death. In HOCM patients microvascular density was associated with the myocardial MMP-2/TIMP-1 ratio (r = –0.348, P =.009), whereas no correlation was found between collagen volume fraction and myocardial MMPs. During the 44-month follow-up 6 patients experienced a cardiovascular endpoint. The plasma PICP/ICTP ratio and MMP-2/TIMP-1 ratio were the 2 strongest prognostic makers. In multivariable analyses high PICP/ICTP and MMP-2/TIMP-1 ratios remained independent predictors of cardiovascular outcomes after adjusting for clinical confounders (hazard ratios, 12.683 [ P =.021] and 17.037 [ P =.027], respectively). In HOCM patients the myocardial MMP-2/TIMP-1 ratio was elevated because of microvascular rarefaction but may not be responsible for MF. Background: It is ill‐defined which factors affect the prognosis of patients with recanalized chronic total occlusion (CTO). This study sought to investigate predictors for adverse outcome in such a cohort with long‐time follow‐up. Methods: From 2010 to 2013, patients with successfully recanalized CTO were included. The primary endpoint was a composite of all‐cause death, myocardial infarction or target vessel revascularization (TVR). The secondary endpoints were TVR and target lesion revascularization (TLR). Results: A total of 1987 patients were enrolled and 1806 (90.6%) subjects completed 5‐year follow‐up. Multivariate Cox analysis revealed that age ≥ 75 years (HR,1.70; 95% CI, 1.09‐2.64; P =.02), left ventricular ejection fraction <40% (HR, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.02‐3.69; P =.04) and residual SYNTAX score (HR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01‐1.04; P =.01) were predictors for the primary endpoint. Non‐LAD CTO (HR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.23‐2.70; P <.01), J‐CTO score (HR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.11‐1.54; P <.01) and residual SYNTAX score (HR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.00‐1.04; P =.04) were independently related to TVR. Non‐LAD CTO, high J‐CTO score and residual SYNTAX score was also correlated with TLR. Conclusions: Advanced age, left ventricular dysfunction and residual SYNTAX score were predictors for composite cardiovascular events in patients with CTO after revascularization. Background: The clinical condition of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) and concomitant systemic hypertension is growing more and more prevalent, and it brings about a challenging diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma. However, whether systemic hypertension has an impact on HOCM, and whether sex-related differences exist in this impact, remains unclear. Methods: A total of 453 HOCM patients (age 48.7 ± 12.8 years, 252 [55.6%] males) were recruited in this study. There were 150 patients (33.1%, 81 males and 69 females) with a history of controlled systemic hypertension. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging was performed in all patients. Left ventricular (LV) remodeling index (LVRI) was determined by CMR. LVRI >1.3 g/mL was defined as pathological LV remodeling. Results: Men had significantly greater LVRI (1.40 ± 0.54 vs. 1.15 ± 0.38 g/mL, p < 0.001) and LVRI >1.3 g/mL (p = 0.002), compared with women. The incidence of syncope and 5-year sudden cardiac death risk score were significantly lower in HOCM with hypertension than those without hypertension. LVRI (p = 0.003) and LVRI >1.3 g/mL (p = 0.007) were significantly smaller in males with hypertension, but not in females with hypertension. However, log cardiac troponin I and log N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide were positively correlated with LVRI in men and women. On multivariable logistic analysis, hypertension (OR 0.172, 95% CI 0.056–0.528, p = 0.002) remained an independent determinant of pathological LV remodeling in males, whereas not in females. Conclusions: There were significant sex differences in the impact of systemic hypertension on LV remodeling in patients with HOCM.
