In this paper, we present MammoTab, a dataset composed of 1M Wikipedia tables extracted from over 20M Wikipedia pages and annotated through Wikidata. The lack of this kind of datasets in the state- of-the-art makes MammoTab a good resource for testing and training Semantic Table Interpretation approaches. The dataset has been designed to cover several key challenges, such as disambiguation, homonymy, and NIL-mentions. The dataset has been evaluated using MTab, one of the best approaches of the SemTab challenge.

In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised and automatic approach for Semantic Table Interpretation. The technique presented is performed against DBpedia and Wikidata, and it can be easily adapted to any other Knowledge Graph (KG). Moreover, we provide a tool (LamAPI) that allows to efficiently fetch data needed for Semantic Table Interpretation (STI) tasks from the KG dumps.

We present the geomorphological map of the northwestern part of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the landscape expresses the tectonic activity associated with the Arabia-Eurasia convergence and Neogene climate change. These processes influenced the evolution of landforms and fluvial pathways, where major rivers Tigris, Khabur, and Great Zab incise the landscape of Northeastern Mesopotamia Anticlinal ridges and syncline trough compose the Zagros orogen. The development of water and wind gaps, slope, and karsts processes in the highlands and the tilting of fluvial terraces in the flat areas are the main evidence of the relationship between tectonics, climate variations and geomorphological processes. During the Quaternary, especially after the Last Glacial Maximum, fluctuating arid and wet periods also influenced local landforms and fluvial patterns of the area. Finally, the intensified Holocene human occupation and agricultural activities during the passage to more complex societies over time impacted the evolution of the landscape in this part of Mesopotamia.

Natural Language Generation is a field that is becoming relevant in several domains, including journalism. Natural Language Generation techniques can be of great help to journalists, allowing a substantial reduction in the time required to complete repetitive tasks. In this position paper, we enforce the idea that automated tools can reduce the effort required to journalist when writing articles; at the same time we introduce GazelLex (Gazette Lexicalization), a prototype that covers several steps of Natural Language Generation, in order to create soccer articles automatically, using data from Knowledge Graphs, leaving journalists the possibility of refining and editing articles with additional information. We shall present our first results and current limits of the approach, and we shall also describe some lessons learned that might be useful to readers that want to explore this field.

We present the results of the geomorphological mapping of a region of the Dhofar (Sultanate of Oman) including two contrasting physiographic units sharing a common drainage system into the Arabian Sea: the Jebel Qara limestone massif and the coastal plain of Salalah. Neogene to Quaternary tectonic activity controlled the formation of an extensive system of faults and caused the uplift of the Jebel Qara, forming structural escarpments. The massif underwent karstification and subsequent linear erosion. Today the Jebel is cut by a dendritic net of dry valleys, occasionally dammed by calcareous tufa dams. The transition between the southern escarpment of the Jebel and the plain below displays flat alluvial fans, bordered by a strip of beachrock, coastal dunes, and coastal lagoons, located in correspondence to estuaries. Dramatic soil erosion is evident, linked to intense human-triggered zoogeomorphological processes started in the Mid-Late Holocene after the introduction of pastoral land-use.

This chapter outlines the implication of the Re.Cri.Re. analysis of European societies’ cultural milieu for policy-making. It is claimed the strategic need of carrying out policies of cultural development, as intended within the Re.Cri.Re. framework, a policy of cultural development is aimed at two main purposes: on the one hand, to define social practices that promote semiotic capital, namely the positive experience of institutions and more in general of the systemic rules; on the other hand, to introduce constraints on the opacification of the system, in order to reduce the deficit of sense it fuels. The chapter is dedicated to outline the purpose and the methodological framework of policies of cultural development as well as to present thirteen suggestions of possible actions of this kind. These suggestions target three broad domains: institutions, economy and vital worlds. In order to clarify the methodological tenets and the suggestion, a few stylized excerpts from case-studies examined during the Re.Cri.Re. project are provided.

Digital techniques were adopted in the excavation of the Terramara di Poviglio as a first slep in creating the GIS of the site. A GIS plalform appear an essential choice first to manage the large quantity of data collecled in twenty years of excavation through traditional techniques. Since few years the archaeological feature unearthed during the excavation are surveyed through total station and dedicata software both in the inner part of the village and in the moat surrounding the site. Inside the village the shape and the size oh the houses have been recognized and their relation with the heaps of ash and sherds related to the former hearths. In the fringe of the village a detailed DTM of the moat was also created to understand of the dynamics of the hydraulic system and the relationships of enclosure and internai structures of the village.

The erg Uan Kasa and the wadi Tanezzuft (Libyan Sahara) reacted in different ways to Holocene climatic changes. Consequently, the human groups settled there responded with different ways of adaptation to the drying environment. In the erg Uan Kasa, shallow lakes were formed from the Early to the Mid-Holocene, and their shores were densely inhabited from the Epipalaeolithic to the Pastoral-Neolithic periods. The erg dried out at c. 5000 years BP, but the area was not completely abandoned, as indicated by minor Late Pastoral-Neolithic sites composed of scattered fireplaces. During the wet Holocene, the wadi Tanezzuft was a large meandering river, and its banks were densely settled. At c. 5000 years BP, the stream was not completely dried out, but it changed its pattern, originating an alluvial plain. A large oasis was formed between c. 4000 and 2000 years BP, exploited by Late Pastoral-Neolithic pastoral communities, and later by Garamantians, which introduced soil management and agricultural practices. The Tanezzuft oasis suffered a drastic reduction in size during the first centuries AD, at the time of the abandonment of the Garamantian settlements.

Dendroclimatology of Cupressus dupreziana, the Tassili cypress, has been attempted on samples obtained from the door beams of the old cities of Ghat and Barkat located at the foot of the Tassili, where the cypress still lives. The tree rings of 20 samples were measured and dated by 24 AMS 14C dates. A mean ring-width chronology has thus been obtained, spanning, though discontinuously, 5220 to 100 14C BP (5990/65 cal. BP). As the tree-ring width in dry lands epends mainly on water availability, the mean ring-width chronology represents a detailed record of changes in rainfall on a decade scale for the middle and late Holocene of the central Sahara. It indicates main drought spells at 5200/5000 14C BP (5900/5760 cal. BP) and at 4350 BP (5120 cal. BP), followed by phases of enhanced precipitation and by the onset of extreme arid conditions at 1550 14C BP (1500 cal. BP).
