As the only two optical instruments appearing in its first fleet of instrumentation, the GEMINI MultiObject Spectrograph (GMOS) are indeed being developed as workhorse instruments. One GMOS will be located at each of the GEMINI telescopes to perform: a) exquisite direct imaging, b) 5.5 arcminute longslit spectroscopy, c) up to 600 object multislit spectroscopy, and d) about 2000 element integral field spectroscopy. The GMOSs are the only GEMINI instrumentation duplicated at both telescopes. The UK and Canadian GMOS team successfully completed their critical design review in February 1997. They are now well into the fabrication phase, and will soon approach integration of the first instrument. The first GMOS is scheduled to be delivered to Mauna Kea in the fall of'99 and the second to Cerro Pachon one year later. In this paper, we will look at how a few of the more interesting details of the final GMOS design help meet its demanding scientific requirements. These include its transmissive optical design and mask handling mechanisms. We will also discuss our plans for the mask handling process in GEMINI'S queue scheduled environment, from the taking of direct images through to the use of masks on the telescope. Finally, we present the status of fabrication and integration work to date.

The goal of the Gemini Deep Deep Survey (GDDS) is to study an unbiased sample of K 15.2. High FeII column densities are observed in the z=2.72 Lyman break galaxy cB58 (logN_FeII ~ 15.25) and in gamma-ray burst host galaxies (logN_FeII ~ 14.8-15.9). Given our measured FeII column density and assuming a moderate iron dust depletion (delta_Fe ~ 1 dex), we derive an optical dust extinction A_V ~ 0.6. If the HI column density is log N(HI) 0.2. The high completeness of the GDDS sample implies that these results are typical of star-forming galaxies in the 1, ApJ in press, corrected HI column density estimate

We report spectroscopic detection of three z ∼ 6 Lyα-emitting galaxies, in the vicinity of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, from the early data of the Gemini Lyman Alpha at Reionisation Era (GLARE) project. Two objects, GLARE 3001 (z = 5.79) and GLARE 3011 (z = 5.94), are new detections and are fainter in z′ (z′AB = 26.37 and 27.15) than any Lyman break galaxy previously detected in Lyα. A third object, GLARE 1042 (z = 5.83), has previously been detected in line emission from the ground; we report here a new spectroscopic continuum detection. Gemini/GMOS-South spectra of these objects, obtained using nod and shuffle, are presented together with a discussion of their photometric properties. All three objects were selected for spectroscopy via the i-drop Lyman break technique, the two new detections from the GOODS version 1.0 imaging data. The red i′-z′ colors and high equivalent widths of these objects suggest a high-confidence z > 5 Lyα identification of the emission lines. This brings the total number of known z > 5 galaxies within 9′ of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to four, of which three are at the same redshift (z = 5.8 within 2000 km s-1), suggesting the existence of a large-scale structure at this redshift.

The galaxy population at z ≈ 6 has been the subject of intense study in recent years, culminating in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) - the deepest imaging survey yet. A large number of high-redshift galaxy candidates have been identified within the HUDF, but until now analysis of their properties has been hampered by the difficulty of obtaining spectroscopic redshifts for these faint galaxies. Our 'Gemini Lyman-Alpha at Reionization Era' (GLARE) project has been designed to undertake spectroscopic follow-up of faint (z′ < 28.5) i′-drop galaxies at z ≈ 6 in the HUDF. In a previous paper we presented preliminary results from the first 7.5 h of data from GLARE. In this paper we detail the complete survey. We have now obtained 36 h of spectroscopy on a single GMOS slitmask from Gemini-South, with a spectral resolution of λ/ΔλFWHM ≈ 1000. We identify five strong Lyα emitters at z > 5.5, and a further nine possible line emitters with detections at lower significance. We also place tight constraints on the equivalent width of Lyα emission for a further ten i′-drop galaxies and examine the equivalent width distribution of this faint spectroscopic sample of z ≈ 6 galaxies. We find that the fraction of galaxies with little or no emission is similar to that at z ≈ 3, but that the z ≈ 6 population has a tail of sources with high rest-frame equivalent widths. Possible explanations for this effect include a tendency towards stronger line emission in faint sources, which may arise from extreme youth or low metallicity in the Lyman-break population at high redshift, or possibly a top-heavy initial mass function. © 2007 RAS.

The ISM metallicity and the stellar mass are examined in a sample of 66 galaxies at 0.4 < z < 1, selected from the Gemini Deep Deep Survey (GDDS) and the Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS). We observe a mass-metallicity relation similar to that seen in z ∼ 0.1 SDSS galaxies, but displaced towards higher masses and/or lower metallicities. We present the results of a multicolour (VIZ) survey for low-luminosity (M B < -23.5) quasars with z ∼ 5 using the 12K CCD mosaic camera on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The survey covers 1.8 deg 2 to a limiting magnitude of m z = 22.5(Vega), about two magnitudes fainter than the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) quasar survey. Twenty candidates were selected by their VIZ colours, and spectra for 15 of these were obtained with GMOS on the Gemini North telescope. A single quasar with z = 4.99 was recovered; the remaining candidates are all M stars. The detection of only a single quasar in the redshift range 4.8 < z < 5.2 accessible to the survey is indicative of a possible turnover in the luminosity function at faint quasar magnitudes, and a departure from the form observed at higher luminosities (in agreement with quasar lensing observations by Richards et al.). However, the derived space densities of quasars more luminous than MB (Vega) < - 23.5, of 2.96 × 10 -7 Mpc -3 is consistent at the 65 per cent confidence level with extrapolation of the quasar luminosity function as derived by Fan et al. at m i < 19.6(Vega).

Far-ultraviolet spectra of LMC X-3 were taken covering photometric phases 0.47 to 0.74 in the 1.7-day orbital period of the black-hole binary (phase zero being superior conjunction of the X-ray source). The continuum is faint and flat, but appears to vary significantly during the observations. Concurrent RXTE/ASM observations show the system was in its most luminous X-ray state during the FUSE observations. The FUV spectrum contains strong terrestrial airglow emission lines, while the only stellar lines clearly present are emissions from the O VI resonance doublet. Their flux does not change significantly during the FUSE observations. These lines are modelled as two asymmetrical profiles, including the local ISM absorptions due to C II and possibly O VI. Velocity variations of O VI emission are consistent with the orbital velocity of the black hole and provide a new constraint on its mass., 12 pages including 1 table, 4 diagrams To appear in AJ

We have obtained spectroscopy with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) of the supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9-6951 over a complete binary orbital cycle. The spectra show a hot continuum with extremely broad O VI emission and weak Lyman absorptions. He II emission is weak and narrow, while N III and C III emissions are undetected, although lines from these ions are prominent at optical wavelengths. The broad O VI emission and Lyman absorption show radial velocity curves that are approximately antiphased and have semiamplitudes of ~117 +- 40 and 54 +- 10 km/s, respectively. Narrow emissions from He II and O VI show small velocity variations with phasing different from the broad O VI, but consistent with the optical line peaks. We also measure considerable changes in the FUV continuum and O VI emission line flux. (abridged) Using the UH8K mosaic camera, we have measured the angular correlation function \omega(\theta) for 100,000 galaxies over four widely separated fields totalling ~1\deg^2 and reaching IAB~25.5. With this sample we investigate the dependence of \omega(\theta) at 1', A_\omega(1'), on sample median IAB magnitude in the range 19.51. Models with \epsilon~0 cannot simultaneously match both bright and faint measurements of A_\omega(1`). We show how this result is a natural consequence of the ``bias-free'' nature of the \epsilon formalism and is consistent with the field galaxy population in the range 22.0, Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, requires natbib.sty, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report the first detection of emission line gas within the host galaxies of high redshift QSOs. This was done using narrow-band imaging at the redshifted wavelengths of [O III] and H alpha, using the PUEO adaptive optics camera of the CFHT. The QSOs are all radio-quiet or very compact radio sources. In all five observed QSOs, which have redshifts 0.9 to 2.4, we find extended line emission that lies within 0.5" (a few Kpc) of the nucleus. The emission (redshifted) equivalent widths range from 35 to 300A. Where there is radio structure, the line emission is aligned with it. We also report on continuum fluxes and possible companions. Surface photometry has been performed on a sample of 46 field elliptical galaxies. These galaxies are described well by a deVaucouleurs R^{1/4} profile. The sample was selected from the combined Canada-France and LDSS redshift surveys and spans the range 0.20 < z < 1.00. The relationship between galaxy half-light radius and luminosity evolves such that a galaxy of a given size is more luminous by Delta M_B=-0.97 \pm 0.14 mag at z=0.92 and the mean rest-frame color shifts blueward by Delta (U-V) =-0.68 \pm 0.11 at z=0.92 relative to the local cluster relations. Approximately 1/3 of these elliptical galaxies exhibit [OII] 3727 emission lines with equivalent widths > 15 angstroms indicating ongoing star formation. Estimated star-formation rates imply that \le 5% of the stellar mass in the elliptical galaxy population has been formed since z=1. We see no evidence for a decline in the space density of early-type galaxies with look-back time. The statistics and a comparison with local luminosity functions are both consistent with the view that the population of massive early-type galaxies was largely in place by z~1. This implies that merging is not required since that time to produce the present-day space density of elliptical galaxies., Comment: 21 pages plus 8 figures plus 5 tables. The identification of the sources with optical counterparts is described in detail, and a classification scheme is devised which depends on the S/N of the detection and the inverse probability of chance coincidence. 83% of the 54ISOCAMsources are identified with IAB 1 of the 44 S6:75µm > 150µJy sources which are non-stellar (7 ”spectroscopic” and 3 ”photometric” stars excluded).

(Abridged) We analyse Hubble Space Telescope images of a complete sample of 341 galaxies drawn from both the Canada France and Autofib/Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph ground-based redshift surveys. We discuss morphological classifications of these galaxies, and quantify possible biases that may arise from various redshift-dependent effects. We then discuss these biases in the context of automated classifications, and quantify the expected misclassification in our system. After allowing for such biases, the redshift distribution for normal spirals, together with their luminosity function derived as a function of redshift, indicates approximately 1 magnitude of luminosity evolution in B(AB) by z=1. The elliptical sample is too small for precise evolutionary constraints. However, we find a substantial increase in the proportion of galaxies with irregular morphology at large redshift. These galaxies also appear to be the dominant cause of the rapid rise with redshift in the blue luminosity density identified in the redshift surveys. Although galaxies with irregular morphology may well comprise a mixture of different physical systems and might not correspond to present day irregulars, it is clear that the apparently declining abundance and luminosities of our distant ``irregulars'' holds an important key to understanding recent evolution in the star formation history of normal galaxies., 51 pages (14 PS-figures, 3 figures as GIFs) To be published in in ApJ

We have used the projected two-point correlation function, $w(r_p)$, to investigate the spatial distribution of the 591 galaxies with secure redshifts between $0 \leq z \leq 1.3$ in the five CFRS fields. The slope of the two-point correlation function for the sample as a whole is $\gamma=1.64\pm0.05$, very similar to the local slope, and $\gamma$ is therefore not strongly evolving with redshift. However, the amplitude of the correlation function decreases strongly with increasing redshift, so that at $z\approx0.6$ it is a factor of 10 lower (for $q_0=0.5$) than for a similarly-selected local galaxy population, on scales $0.1, Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures
