Since the mid 1990s, partial cuts have been widely used in yellow birch--conifer stands (BJR, bétulaies jaunes résineuses) in the temperate forests of Québec. We studied the impact of residual basal area on stand composition and on the time required to reconstitute enough merchantable basal area to allow for a second partial cut, according to the usual standards of forest management in Québec. To do so, we used a dataset from 9 experiments as well as simulations of the Artémis-2014 growth model and those of a new model, BJR, which we calibrated using the study data. Our results show that residual basal area influences stand periodic annual increment, which peaks 10 to 15 years after the cut. Residual basal area also influences the length of the cutting cycle and future stand composition. We estimated a mean cutting cycle of 24 years for a mean residual basal area of 18 m²⋅ha-1, and of 40 years for a mean residual basal area of 14 m²⋅ha-1. Survival and growth of planted white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) were assessed at year 15 in boreal mixedwood stands of northern Alberta, Canada, in stands that were deciduous-dominated prior to logging or were conifer-dominated. Three overstory retention levels (0%, 50%, and 75% retention) and four site preparation treatments (mound, high speed mix, scalp, and no treatment) were evaluated. In deciduous-dominated stands, planted spruce performed best in the 50% retention; here, stem volume was at least double that of any other retention treatment after 15 years. In contrast, spruce had reduced growth in coniferous-dominated stands in both 50% and 75% retention treatments compared with the 0% retention. Survival of planted spruce was unaffected by level of retention, but survival was lower in coniferous-dominated stands than in deciduous-dominated stands; in the coniferous-dominated stands, survival was better with mounding and mixing and lowest with scalp treatments. All height variables tended to be greater in the mix and mound site preparation treatments. Finally, the best estimates of future total growth (regenerated spruce and deciduous combined) in the coniferous-dominated stands were in the clearcut treatment. In terms of regenerated spruce growth, the best estimates occurred in the deciduous-dominated – 50% retention stand planted with soil mixing–mounding treatments, where projected growth of spruce was comparable with that of open-grown and tended stands in Alberta's boreal forests. Drought tolerance of trees may be affected by competition, but most studies quantifying the relationship do not consider the effect of stem clustering. Trees are often clustered in interior Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Mayr) Franco) forests near the grassland interface in central British Columbia due to past harvesting practices or habitat management for mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus hemionus (Rafinesque, 1817)). Climate change projections indicate continued increases in temperature, an outcome that would stress trees growing in dry environments. Trees placed in different states of competition by mechanical harvesting in the 1970s were sampled to provide a 40-year comparison of three levels of competition during 1-2 year droughts. Tree-ring analysis was used to assess the reduction in growth during drought years and resumption of growth in subsequent years. A clear separation of growth rates was evident between open-growing trees, trees on the edge of harvesting trails, and trees within the unharvested interior. Edge trees had intermediate growth rates but no differences were found in the long-term climate-growth relationship compared with open-growing trees. Both Edge and Open classes showed less relative growth reduction during droughts than Interior trees growing between harvest trails. In tolerant hardwood forests of eastern North America, multiple-aged silvicultural systems rely on advanced regeneration to restock the forests. Evaluation of the long-term influence of advanced regeneration on the mature stand is critical for improving management practices. We used a retrospective approach to evaluate the influence of advanced regeneration present at the time of harvest on the current (2012) stand structure and the quality of the growing stock. The study was carried out in partially harvested stands in northwestern New Brunswick, Canada. Trees were sampled from stands with varying degrees of harvest intensities, times since harvest, and site characteristics. Pre-existing advanced regeneration contributed the bulk of trees in the 10-19 cm diameter class across the stands. In stands with low-intensity harvest, the overstory was dominated by sugar maple ( Acer saccharum Marsh.) that originated as advanced regeneration. In stands with high-intensity harvest, however, yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) pre-existing advanced regeneration dominated the overstory. The probability of sugar maple and yellow birch being acceptable growing stock peaked at a diameter at breast height (DBH) of about 30-40 cm, while other species combined peaked at a DBH of around 20-25 cm. Our results suggest that harvest intensities based on the dominant advanced regeneration composition and harvesting systems that minimize the risk of physical damage to advanced regeneration are required to achieve partial harvesting objectives. Mixed-species stands present a number of opportunities for and challenges to forest managers. Boreal mixedwood stands in eastern Canada are often characterized by a dominant canopy of shade-intolerant aspen ( Populus tremuloides Michx.) with more shade-tolerant conifers in the mid- to sub-canopy layers. Because the aspen and conifer components often attain optimal merchantable sizes at different moments in stand development, there is an interest in developing silvicultural practices that allow partial or total removal of aspen and favour accelerated growth of residual conifers. We tested four partial harvesting treatments in mixed aspen - white spruce ( Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) stands in which different proportions of aspen (0%, 50%, 65%, and 100% basal area) were removed. Ten years after treatments, 72 spruce stems representing dominant, co-dominant, and suppressed social classes were destructively sampled for stem analysis. Using linear mixed effect models, we analyzed growth as a function of treatment intensity, time since treatment, social status, pretreatment growth rate, and neighbourhood competition. Relative to control stands, radial and volume growth responses were detected only in the extreme treatment of 100% aspen removal. In relative terms, suppressed trees showed the greatest magnitude of cumulative growth increase. Compared with control trees, average annual radial and volume increments were, respectively, 23.5% and 7.1% higher for dominant trees, 67.7% and 24.1% higher for co-dominant trees, and 115.8% and 65.6% higher for suppressed trees over the 10 years after treatment. Growth response was proportional to pretreatment growth rate, and among neighbouring trees, only coniferous neighbours had a negative effect on white spruce growth. Our results suggest that in similar mixed-stand conditions, relatively heavy removal of overstory aspen accompanied by thinning of crowded conifers would result in greatest growth response of residual spruce stems. Boreal ecosystem functioning is largely controlled by disturbance dynamics. There have been efforts at adapting forest management approaches to emulate natural disturbance effects, as this is expected to maintain ecosystem resilience. In many instances, this involves resorting to partial cutting strategies that are likely to increase windthrow losses. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of alternative silvicultural practices on windthrow damage and how these effects vary with the scale of treatment. The study was conducted in the Quebec North Shore region (Canada), an area dominated by balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and accompanied by black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.). Four different silvicultural treatments (overstory removal, heavy partial cutting, and two patterns of selection cutting) and control areas were implemented in 2004 and 2005. The experiment used a nested approach where treatment at the plot level was independent and yet nested within the block-level treatment. At the block level, treatments were applied over 10-20 ha units, leaving a small portion of the block for a smaller application of each treatment (plot scale, 2500 m2). Inventory was carried out before harvesting and monitoring was done yearly after harvesting, with the aim to better understand the plot- and block-level factors that drive windthrow damage levels and the effects of alternative silvicultural treatments. Results after 6-7 years show that basal area proportion windthrown differs substantially between treatments, as well as between treated sites and control sites. Windthrow levels were higher under heavy cuts relative to selection cuts and also increased with balsam fir proportion. Windthrow proportions were better correlated to block-level treatment than plot-level treatment, showing that the environment surrounding the treated plot can have an important effect on windthrow losses. Overall, the selection cutting system, particularly SC2, retains the most green-tree basal area and thus best meets the management objective of retaining old-growth attributes. Studies have reported divergent results on the effect of soil fertility and canopy opening on understory density and growth of sugar maple (AS; Acer saccharum Marsh.) and American beech (FG; Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a gradient of canopy opening and soil fertility on the density and growth of AS and FG saplings in southwestern Quebec, Canada. We investigated 56 stands containing both AS and FG that were subjected to different disturbance history types (DHTs) (UF, unmanaged forest; PC, partial cut; and CC, clearcut) on various soil types. AS and FG absolute and relative sapling density varied greatly among the 56 stands; however, no significant effects of DHT, soil nutrient availability, or their interaction were found. Both species responded positively in terms of radial growth to canopy openings, with FG growth being slightly better than AS growth in PC stands compared with other canopy treatments. Contrary to our hypothesis, AS did not show significantly higher growth than FG following clear-cutting. These results do not support the idea that AS abundance and growth could be promoted by increasing the intensity of the canopy opening during harvest, at least on the generally acidic and base-poor soils that were investigated. Understanding the response of tree regeneration following commercial thinning treatments can improve planning in managed forests dependent on natural regeneration. We used long-term commercial thinning experiments in eastern spruce-fir stands of Maine, USA, to test two hypotheses: (1) commercial thinning increases the density of tree regeneration and (2) tree regeneration density increases with increasing thinning intensity. A decade after thinning, densities of softwood and hardwood regeneration were 10 times greater in thinned stands than unthinned stands. The abundance of small softwood (0.11-0.60 m tall) was highest in lower intensity thinning treatments, whereas medium (0.61-1.40 m tall) and large (≥1.41 m tall to 8.90 cm diameter at breast height) softwoods increased proportionally with thinning intensity, a pattern related to a higher rate of recruitment in more open stands created by heavier thinning. Hardwood density generally increased with thinning intensity and developed into a significant component of the large size class. Softwood regeneration density was higher in older spruce stands than younger fir stands, which may be due to greater abundance of advance regeneration, higher residual stand mortality, and greater harvest disturbance in older spruce stands. However, acceptable softwood stocking was achieved in all replicates of thinning treatments. Therefore, in addition to providing higher individual-tree growth and merchantable yield, commercial thinning in eastern spruce-fir stands also increases regeneration density.
