This study employed computational modeling (in silico) methods, combined with ecotoxicological experiments (in vivo) to predict the persistence/biodegradability, bioaccumulation, mobility, and ecological risks of an antihistamine drug (Loratadine: LOR) in the aquatic compartment. To achieve these goals, four endpoints of the LOR were obtained from different open-source computational tools, namely: (i) "STP total removal"; (ii) Predicted ready biodegradability; (iii) Octanol-water partition coefficient (KOW); and (iv) Soil organic adsorption coefficient (KOC). Moreover, acute and chronic, ecotoxicological assays using non-target freshwater organisms of different trophic levels (namely, algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata; microcrustaceans Daphnia similis and Ceriodaphnia dubia; and fish Danio rerio), were used to predict the ecological risks of LOR. The main results showed that LOR: (i) is considered persistent (after a weight-of-evidence assessment) and highly resistant to biodegradation; (ii) is hydrophobic (LOG KOW = 5.20), immobile (LOG KOC = 5.63), and thus, it can potentially bioaccumulate and/or can cause numerous deleterious effects in aquatic species; and (iii) after ecotoxicological evaluation is considered "toxic" and/or "highly toxic" to the three trophic levels tested. Moreover, both the ecotoxicological assays and risk assessment (RQ), showed that LOR is more harmful for the crustaceans (RQcrustaceans = moderate to high risks) than for algae and fish. Climate changes linked to extreme events pose a threat to freshwater biodiversity, impacting organs, behaviour, and reproduction. Moreover, these changes can be amplified by pollution. Copper sulphate (CuSO4) is used in agriculture and aquaculture, so the copper can reach streams, rivers, and lakes impacting fish. This study evaluated the combined effects of temperature and copper on gills and liver histology biomarkers and in the behaviour of Mozambique tilapia over 28 days. Tilapias were exposed to different water temperatures (25 °C and 32 °C) and CuSO4 concentrations (1.1 and 3.6 mg/L). Fish from the control group were exposed to water without copper sulphate and at 25 °C (within their optimum range). Histopathological analysis revealed significant tissue lesions, namely aneurysms and bending of gill lamellae, and hyalinization and vacuolization in the liver at the higher temperature and CuSO4 level. Moreover, behavioural observations revealed increased stress changes under the same conditions. These findings highlight the effects of fast climate change, and rising temperatures on copper toxicity, underlining the necessity for strict monitoring and regulation of copper use due to future climate change scenarios to protect aquatic ecosystems, ichthyofauna population and trophic web dynamics. This data also alerts for similar problems with other toxic metals or chemicals, at short term, in streams and rivers, under rapid climate changes and more frequent extreme events. Tub gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucerna (Linnaeus, 1758), is a Mediterranean-Atlantic benthic species usually captured as by-catch by Portuguese traditional fisheries and considered the most important commercial fish species of the family Triglidae. However, to date, little is known about its habitat residency and whether the species can be considered a marine estuarine-dependent fish. Otolith microchemistry has proven effective in providing information about fish movement patterns throughout different water salinities. In this study, core-to-edge transects of Sr:Ca in the fish saccular otoliths of 35 juveniles of C. lucerna captured in March 2007 by a scientific survey along the Portuguese coast were used to assess the species movement between brackish and marine waters. Data suggest that most individuals (97%) have an estuarine-dependent profile, with 63% showing a clear presence in marine waters during the early life history periods. Evidence of an estuarine residence throughout the fish life cycle was found in only 3% of individuals. Ba:Ca profiles did not reflect an inverse relationship with Sr:Ca salinity results but corroborated findings from other authors about the influence of upwelling processes and freshwater runoffs on Ba incorporation into the otoliths of coastal fish. Furthermore, the data also showed that C. lucerna can occupy and migrate among habitats with diverse salinity degrees, showing high environmental plasticity and adaptation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thread herring Opisthonema oglinum (Lesueur, 1818) is a small pelagic fish distributed in the western margin of the Atlantic Ocean from the United States to Argentina. It is a target species for diverse commercial fisheries, including the Brazilian industrial purse seine fleets that operate in the Southeastern Brazilian Bight. To investigate the geographic variation in the thread herring populations in this fishing ground, sagittal otoliths were collected from two areas: Rio de Janeiro (RJ: 23°04′ S, 44°03′ W) and Santa Catarina (SC: 26°05′ S, 48°18′ W). Otolith shape analyses and multi-elemental signatures were statistically evaluated using elliptical Fourier descriptors and elemental/Ca ratios. Remarkable differences in the thread herring otoliths between the two areas were found. The previous scenario in which the thread herring constitutes a single panmictic population in the Atlantic Ocean is now debatable. Simple Summary: The whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri is an important fishery resource on the southwest Atlantic coast. Despite being heavily exploited, there are a few uncertainties regarding the population structure in the transition area between the tropical and warm temperate zones (South Brazilian Bight). In the State of Rio de Janeiro (the northern part of this area), local environmental conditions, such as an upwelling phenomena and large estuarine bays, together with contributions of continental drainage and anthropogenic activities, could determine different croaker populations. The aim of this study was to assess the fine-scale population structure of this species in three localities in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil) and to compare it with previous studies that used different approaches. Through the combined use of genetic markers (nuclear microsatellites) and otolith signatures (morphometry and chemistry), two genotypic (North + Center/South) and three phenotypic (North + Center + South) populations were found. These results could contribute to a better understanding of the M. furnieri population dynamics and allow a rational management of this important fishing resource. The inshore area of the Southwestern Atlantic between 22 °S and 29 °S (South Brazilian Bight) is a transitional climatic zone, where the tropical and warm temperate provinces mix. In its northern part, i.e., in the coastal waters of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, local oceanographic conditions, such as upwelling in the north, and great bays with different degrees of anthropogenic influences in the center and south can determine the population structure of several fish stocks. The Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is one the most heavily exploited fishing resources in this area, but there are still some doubts about its population structure. In this study, through combined analyses using nuclear genetic markers and morphological and geochemical signatures of otoliths, a divergence of individuals between two populations was identified using microsatellites, while a finer spatial structure with three populations (north, center and south, respectively) was found based on otolith shapes and elemental signatures. Simple Summary: Otolith geochemical signatures were important tools used to investigate the population of commercially exploited fish species. Historical and contemporary otolith samples of Isopisthus parvipinnis, Bigtooth corvina, an economically and ecologically important Brazilian fish species, collected in five subareas [São Paulo: North—NSP, Center—CSP and South—SSP; Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC)] of the shallow waters off the coast of the South Brazil Bight were used in this study. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses showed spatial differences in otolith chemical composition over the years, suggesting that long-term temporal variability in oceanographic conditions, anthropogenic influence, and climate change on this coastal ecosystem influenced the geochemical signatures. Moreover, these results also confirm that I. parvipinnis is not a single and homogeneous fish stock in this geographic area, supporting the existence of a metapopulation structure scenario and corroborating previous studies that used alternative, complementary phenotypic tags. In this study, otolith geochemical signatures (Element:Ca ratios) were used to investigate the long-term spatial shifts of the population structure of Isopisthus parvipinnis, Bigtooth corvina, an economically and ecologically important Brazilian fish species. Two-hundred and ninety-seven juvenile individuals from historical (1975) and contemporary (2018/2019) samples were collected in five subareas [São Paulo: North—NSP, Center—CSP and South—SSP; Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC)] of the shallow waters off the coast of the South Brazil Bight were analyzed. The main informative single elements were Co:Ca, Cu:Ca, Li:Ca, Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, Ni:Ca, Na:Ca, and Rb:Ca. Multivariate analysis showed spatial differences in otolith chemical composition over the years. Samples from 1975 presented an overall low reclassification rate (58%), suggesting the existence of two population units: (1) SP + PR; and (2) SC. However, samples from 2018/2019 discriminated four distinct population units with a good overall reclassification (80%): (1) NSP; (2) CSP; (3) SSP + PR; and (4) SC. This spatial differentiation on the geochemical signatures probably reflects the effects of long-term temporal variability in oceanographic conditions, anthropogenic influence, and climate change on this coastal ecosystem. Simple Summary: Context of climate change is being widely studied, nevertheless its effects in the toxicity of other contaminants have been poorly study. Particularly, the effects of ocean acidification on the modulation of pharmaceutical absorption and consequent effects, have not been extensively addressed before. In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of ocean acidification (specifically pH values of 8.2, 7.9, and 7.6) combined with paracetamol exposure (0, 30, 60, and 120 µg/L) on the polychaeta Hediste diversicolor. To do so, specific biomarkers were measured namely (CAT), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and cyclooxygenase (COX) activities, as well as thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), were quantified to serve as ecotoxicological endpoints. Alterations of CAT, and GSTs activities, and TBARS levels indicate an alteration in redox balances. Differences in exposed pH levels indicate the possible modulation of the absorption of this pharmaceutical in ocean acidifications scenarios. Alterations in AChE were only observed following paracetamol exposure, not being altered by media pH. Hereby obtained results suggest that seawater acidification is detrimental to marine wildlife, since it may enhance toxic effects caused by environmental realistic concentrations of pharmaceuticals. This work is crucial to understand the potential effects of pharmaceuticals in a climate change scenario. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels are likely to lower ocean pH values, after its dissolution in seawater. Additionally, pharmaceuticals drugs are environmental stressors due to their intrinsic properties and worldwide occurrence. It is thus of the utmost importance to assess the combined effects of pH decreases and pharmaceutical contamination, considering that their absorption (and effects) are likely to be strongly affected by changes in oceanic pH. To attain this goal, individuals of the marine polychaete Hediste diversicolor were exposed to distinct pH levels (8.2, 7.9, and 7.6) and environmentally relevant concentrations of the acidic drug paracetamol (PAR: 0, 30, 60, and 120 µg/L). Biomarkers such as catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and cyclooxygenase (COX) activities, as well as peroxidative damage (through thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) quantification), were quantified to serve as ecotoxicological endpoints. Data showed a general increase in CAT and a decrease in GST activities (with significant fluctuations according to the tested conditions of PAR and pH). These changes are likely to be associated with alterations of the redox cycle driven by PAR exposure. In addition, pH levels seemed to condition the toxicity caused by PAR, suggesting that the toxic effects of this drug were in some cases enhanced by more acidic conditions. An inhibition of AChE was observed in animals exposed to the highest concentration of PAR, regardless of the pH value. Moreover, no lipid peroxidation was observed in most individuals, although a significant increase in TBARS levels was observed for polychaetes exposed to the lowest pH. Finally, no alterations of COX activities were recorded on polychaetes exposed to PAR, regardless of the pH level. The obtained results suggest that seawater acidification is detrimental to marine wildlife, since it may enhance toxic effects caused by environmental realistic concentrations of acidic drugs, such as PAR. This study evaluated the water quality of the urban runoff flowing into the public beaches and recreational waters of Guarujá, São Paulo State, Brazil. Monthly samples were obtained from October 2017 to August 2018 in four beaches: Tombo (Blue Flag certification), Enseada (high-used by tourist), Perequê (fishing community) and Iporanga (conservation unit). Twenty-eight environmental variables (physical, chemical and microbiological) were analysed using standard statistical tests, and different quality indexes were obtained. Data showed that urban drainage channels are the main responsible for pollutant transport to the Guarujá Sea, mainly during the rainy season. Moreover, the different occupations and land uses appear to interfere with the water quality of the urban runoff. The best water quality was recorded at Iporanga (environmental compliance over 90% according to the Brazilian law, with low total phosphorus enrichment, but medium aluminium toxicity). The quality ratings for the other beaches were classified as very bad (57%–66% compliance with current legislation). Moreover, these waters were eutrophic showing high aluminium toxicity. This study highlights the environmental and public health risks arising from the urban runoff flowing into the beaches of Guarujá. Better water management practices, improvement of basic sanitation and population awareness, is highly recommended to prevent potential socio-environmental risks in this tourist area. The hereby study was conducted to assess the chronic biological effects of potentially contaminated sediments collected at the Zarzis area, Tunisia, on the marine mussel species (Mytilus spp.). Useful information can be provided through the analysis of biomarkers that allow inferring about the presence of pollutants and their adverse effects, contributing for a better assessment of ecosystems' quality and functions. Three sampling sites were chosen taking into account the putative impact of different human activities at several sites located in Zarzis area, compared to an unpolluted reference site, located in Afurada, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Physical-chemical characterization involved the survey of metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Zn and Pb) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), whose toxic effects are involved in the onset of oxidative stress. Biomarkers involving oxidative stress and neurotoxicity were quantified in hemolymph, gills, and digestive gland tissues of Mytilus spp. following the chronic exposure to the distinct sediments. Organisms exposed to sediments collected at the Zarzis area presented the highest values of the tested oxidative stress biomarkers and a significant inhibition of AChE activity in comparison with the unpolluted reference site. This set of results suggests that biomarker responses representing different biological endpoints in Mytilus spp. are useful for the assessment of environmental pollution effects, namely by PAHs and metals. Isopisthus parvipinnis, commonly known as "bigtooth corvina", is a marine estuarine‐dependent fish captured in the southeast and south Brazilian coast as bycatch of the shrimp fishery. This work used the sagittae morphology as a tool to primarily study the population structure of I. parvipinnis between São Paulo and Santa Catarina states (23ºS to 26.9ºS) in Brazil. Secondly, it intended to verify the existence of morphological alterations over time, by comparing otoliths of fish captured in 1975 and 2018/2019. Otolith shape analyses were performed in individuals ranging from 66 to 139 mm of total length, obtained from historical (1975) and present catches (2018/2019) in the shallow coastal areas off North of São Paulo (NSP), Centre of São Paulo (CSP), South of São Paulo (SSP), Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC). Otoliths were analyzed using shape indices (SIs), elliptical Fourier descriptors (EFDs) and both tools combined. Morphological variations among locations and between years were tested using uni and multivariate statistics. Data showed regional differences in the otolith shape analysis over the years. Samples from 1975 presented an overall low reclassification rate (43%), with a high overlap of individuals among locations, suggesting the existence of a single group. Differently, samples from 2018/2019 discriminated four distinct spatial units with a good overall reclassification (74%): group 1 ‐ NSP; group 2 ‐ CSP; group 3 ‐ SSP + PR; and group 4 ‐ SC. The hereby data suggests regional changes at long term in the population dynamics of I. parvipinnis, from a single panmictic population in the past to a metapopulation structure in the present days, with consequences for the rational and sustainable management of the fishery. However, once it was the first evaluation of the population structure of I. parvipinnis, it is highly recommended to use complimentary phenotypic and/or genetic approaches to corroborate the hereby observed findings. The shannyLipophrys pholisis an intertidal fish commonly found in Portuguese coastal waters. Spawning takes place from early autumn to mid spring, after which demersal eggs hatch and larvae disperse along the coast. Two to three months later, young juveniles return to the tide pools to settle. However, information on fish movement, habitat connectivity and population structure is scarce for this species. One hundred and twenty early juveniles (16–35 mm) were collected in April 2014 from six rocky beaches along the western and south Portuguese coasts (Agudela, Cabo do Mundo, Boa Nova, Peniche, Sines and Olhos de Água). δ18O and δ13C were determined by isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. Data were analysed to determine whether isotopic signatures could be used to assess the degree of separation between individuals collected from different locations. Mean δ13C and δ18O values ranged from −0.02‰ to 1.14‰ and −7.77‰ to −6.62‰, respectively. Both seawater temperature and salinity caused differences in otolith δ18O among the four main sampling areas. The variation among areas in δ13C was most likely related to slight differences in the diet, growth and metabolism of fish. The distinct isotopic signatures, at least for the northern and central areas, suggested low levels of connectivity across large spatial scales during the juvenile stage. Furthermore, similar isotopic signatures within the same area indicated some degree of larval oceanic retention at short spatial scales. This study suggests that stable isotope records in otoliths could provide information about the home residency, movements and habitat connectivity of intertidal fishes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
