Abstract

We report precision determinations of the beam normal single spin asymmetries ($A_n$) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18~GeV electrons off $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Ca, and $^{208}$Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of $A_n$ for $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca are found to be similar to that of $^{12}$C, consistent with expectations thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z~$\leq20$. We also report $A_n$ for $^{208}$Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q$^2$) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the $Z\leq 20$ nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern $A_n$ for nuclei containing $\lesssim 50$ nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual $A_n$ behaviour discovered for scattering off $^{208}$Pb., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We report high-precision measurements of the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable x_{B}. DVCS is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton form factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of x_{B}, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

Abstract

International audience; We report measurements of the exclusive neutral pion electroproduction cross section off protons at large values of xB (0.36, 0.48, and 0.60) and Q2 (3.1 to 8.4 GeV2) obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E12-06-014. The corresponding structure functions dσT/dt+εdσL/dt, dσTT/dt, dσLT/dt, and dσLT′/dt are extracted as a function of the proton momentum transfer t-tmin. The results suggest the amplitude for transversely polarized virtual photons continues to dominate the cross section throughout this kinematic range. The data are well described by calculations based on transversity generalized parton distributions coupled to a helicity flip distribution amplitude of the pion, thus providing a unique way to probe the structure of the nucleon.

Abstract

We report the measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry for the inelastic scattering of electrons from the proton, at $Q^2 = 0.082$ GeV$^2$ and $ W = 2.23$ GeV, above the resonance region. The result $A_{\rm Inel} = - 13.5 \pm 2.0 ({\rm stat}) \pm 3.9 ({\rm syst})$~ppm agrees with theoretical calculations, and helps to validate the modeling of the $\gamma Z$ interference structure functions $F_1^{\gamma Z}$ and $F_2^{\gamma Z}$ used in those calculations, which are also used for determination of the two-boson exchange box diagram ($\Box_{\gamma Z}$) contribution to parity-violating elastic scattering measurements. A positive parity-violating asymmetry for inclusive $\pi^-$ production was observed, as well as positive beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for scattered electrons and a negative beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for inclusive $\pi^-$ production., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, version accepted in Physical Review C

Abstract

Purpose: The GEp-III and GEp-2γ experiments were carried out in Jefferson Laboratory’s (JLab’s) Hall C from\ud 2007 to 2008, to extend the knowledge of Gp\ud E/Gp\ud M to the highest practically achievable Q2 given the maximum\ud beam energy of 6 GeV and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables\ud of elastic ep scattering. This article provides an expanded description of the common experimental apparatus and\ud data analysis procedures, and reports the results of a final reanalysis of the data from both experiments, including\ud the previously unpublished results of the full-acceptance dataset of the GEp-2γ experiment.\ud Methods: Polarization transfer observables in elastic ep → ep scattering were measured at central Q2 values\ud of 2.5, 5.2, 6.8, and 8.54 GeV2\ud . At Q2 = 2.5 GeV2\ud , data were obtained for central values of the virtual photon\ud polarization parameter of 0.149, 0.632, and 0.783. The Hall C High Momentum Spectrometer detected and\ud measured the polarization of protons recoiling elastically from collisions of JLab’s polarized electron beam\ud with a liquid hydrogen target. A large-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeter detected the elastically scattered\ud electrons in coincidence to suppress inelastic backgrounds.\ud Results: The final GEp-III data are largely unchanged relative to the originally published results. The statistical\ud uncertainties of the final GEp-2γ data are significantly reduced at = 0.632 and 0.783 relative to the original\ud publication.\ud Conclusions: The final GEp-III results show that the decrease with Q2 of Gp\ud E/Gp\ud M continues to Q2 = 8.5 GeV2, but at a slowing rate relative to the approximately linear decrease observed in earlier Hall A measurements. At\ud Q2 = 8.5 GeV2\ud , Gp\ud E/Gp\ud M remains positive but is consistent with zero. At Q2 = 2.5 GeV2\ud , Gp\ud E/Gp\ud M derived from\ud the polarization component ratio R ∝ Pt/P shows no statistically significant dependence, as expected in the\ud Born approximation. On the other hand, the ratio Pl/P Born\ud l of the longitudinal polarization transfer component\ud to its Born value shows an enhancement of roughly 1.7% at = 0.783 relative to = 0.149, with ≈ 2.2σ\ud significance based on the total uncertainty, implying a similar effect in the transverse component Pt that cancels\ud in the ratio R.

Abstract

The Qweak experiment, which took data at Jefferson Lab in the period 2010 - 2012, will precisely determine the weak charge of the proton by measuring the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic e-p scattering at 1.1 GeV using a longitudinally polarized electron beam and a liquid hydrogen target at a low momentum transfer of Q2 = 0.025 (GeV/c)2. The weak charge of the proton is predicted by the Standard Model and any significant deviation would indicate physics beyond the Standard Model. The technical challenges and experimental apparatus for measuring the weak charge of the proton will be discussed, as well as the method of extracting the weak charge of the proton. The results from a small subset of the data, that has been published, will also be presented. Furthermore an update will be given of the current status of the data analysis.

Abstract

The unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) differential cross sections in $^3$He($e,e^{\prime}��^{\pm}$)$X$ have been measured for the first time in Jefferson Lab experiment E06-010 performed with a $5.9\,$GeV $e^-$ beam on a $^3$He target. The experiment focuses on the valence quark region, covering a kinematic range $0.12 < x_{bj} < 0.45$, $1 < Q^2 < 4 \, \textrm{(GeV/c)}^2$, $0.45 < z_{h} < 0.65$, and $0.05 < P_t < 0.55 \, \textrm{GeV/c}$. The extracted SIDIS differential cross sections of $��^{\pm}$ production are compared with existing phenomenological models while the $^3$He nucleus approximated as two protons and one neutron in a plane wave picture, in multi-dimensional bins. Within the experimental uncertainties, the azimuthal modulations of the cross sections are found to be consistent with zero.

Abstract

We report on the highest precision yet achieved in the measurement of the polarization of a low energy, $\mathcal{O}$(1 GeV), electron beam, accomplished using a new polarimeter based on electron-photon scattering, in Hall~C at Jefferson Lab. A number of technical innovations were necessary, including a novel method for precise control of the laser polarization in a cavity and a novel diamond micro-strip detector which was able to capture most of the spectrum of scattered electrons. The data analysis technique exploited track finding, the high granularity of the detector and its large acceptance. Abstract

The Jefferson Lab Q_weak experiment determined the weak charge of the proton by measuring the parity-violating elastic scattering asymmetry of longitudinally polarized electrons from an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target at small momentum transfer. A custom apparatus was designed for this experiment to meet the technical challenges presented by the smallest and most precise ${\vec{e}}$p asymmetry ever measured. Technical milestones were achieved at Jefferson Lab in target power, beam current, beam helicity reversal rate, polarimetry, detected rates, and control of helicity-correlated beam properties. The experiment employed 180 microA of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons whose helicity was reversed 960 times per second. The electrons were accelerated to 1.16 GeV and directed to a beamline with extensive instrumentation to measure helicity-correlated beam properties that can induce false asymmetries. Moller and Compton polarimetry were used to measure the electron beam polarization to better than 1%. The electron beam was incident on a 34.4 cm liquid hydrogen target. After passing through a triple collimator system, scattered electrons between 5.8 degrees and 11.6 degrees were bent in the toroidal magnetic field of a resistive copper-coil magnet. The electrons inside this acceptance were focused onto eight fused silica Cerenkov detectors arrayed symmetrically around the beam axis. A total scattered electron rate of about 7 GHz was incident on the detector array. The detectors were read out in integrating mode by custom-built low-noise pre-amplifiers and 18-bit sampling ADC modules. The momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.025 GeV^2 was determined using dedicated low-current (~100 pA) measurements with a set of drift chambers before (and a set of drift chambers and trigger scintillation counters after) the toroidal magnet., 48 pages, 36 figures. Abstract

We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction $^3$He$^{\uparrow}\left(e,e' \right)X$ on a polarized $^3$He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be non-zero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of $1.7 < W < 2.9$ GeV, $1.02$ GeV, which is non-zero at the $2.89\sigma$ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering., Comment: This is the final edited version as published in PRL

Abstract

In May 2012, the Q[superscript p][subscript Weak] collaboration completed a two year measurement program to determine the weak charge of the proton Q[superscript p][subscript Weak] = ( 1 - 4sin [superscript 2] θ[subscript W] at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF). The experiment was designed to produce a 4.0 % measurement of the weak charge, via a 2.5 % measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in the number of elastically scattered 1.165 GeV electrons from protons, at forward angles. At the proposed precision, the experiment would produce a 0.3 % measurement of the weak mixing angle at a momentum transfer of Q[superscript 2] = 0.026 GeV[superscript 2], making it the most precise stand alone measurement of the weak mixing angle at low momentum transfer. In combination with other parity measurements, Q[superscript p][subscript Weak] will also provide a high precision determination of the weak charges of the up and down quarks. At the proposed precision, a significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction could be a signal of new physics at mass scales up to ≃ 6 TeV, whereas agreement would place new and significant constraints on possible Standard Model extensions at mass scales up to ≃ 2 TeV. This paper provides an overview of the physics and the experiment, as well as a brief look at some preliminary diagnostic and analysis data.

Abstract

The Qweak experiment has measured the parity-violating asymmetry in polarized e-p elastic scattering at Q^2 = 0.025(GeV/c)^2, employing 145 microamps of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons on a 34.4cm long liquid hydrogen target at Jefferson Lab. The results of the experiment's commissioning run are reported here, constituting approximately 4% of the data collected in the experiment. From these initial results the measured asymmetry is Aep = -279 +- 35 (statistics) +- 31 (systematics) ppb, which is the smallest and most precise asymmetry ever measured in polarized e-p scattering. The small Q^2 of this experiment has made possible the first determination of the weak charge of the proton, QpW, by incorporating earlier parity-violating electron scattering (PVES) data at higher Q^2 to constrain hadronic corrections. The value of QpW obtained in this way is QpW(PVES) = 0.064 +- 0.012, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of QpW(SM) = 0.0710 +- 0.0007. When this result is further combined with the Cs atomic parity violation (APV) measurement, significant constraints on the weak charges of the up and down quarks can also be extracted. Abstract

HCAL-J is a hadron calorimeter under construction at JLAB in Newport News, VA (USA). The main interest of the JLAB physics is the study of the hadron matter properties, using a longitudinally polarised electron beam; in particular, researchers investigate the electromagnetic form factors of nuclei and nucleons using the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator, which provides a beam of 12 GeV electrons. The upgrade to higher energies allows measurements at high values of Q² and a more in-depth study of the internal structure of the hadron matter. To this purpose, Hall A collaboration is building the SuperBigBite Spectrometer (SBS), which consists of a series of elements including a dipole magnet to curve the trajectory of the recoil particles, and a series of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) to track the particles. Moreover, two analyzers for the measurement of the polarisation components and a hadron calorimeter, HCAL-J, to measure the particle energy, are used in order to apply the so-called recoil polarisation method, which consists in measuring both the longitudinal and transverse polarisation of the scattered nucleon. The study, through SBS, of the electromagnetic form factors of nucleons allows obtaining the ratio between these two components, which results to be proportional to the ratio between the electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon. HCAL-J is a sampling calorimeter useful to measure the energy of the recoil nucleon; its active area consists of 288 modules that include a matrix with 24 modules in height and 12 in width. There are optical fibres in between each module, connected to a photomultiplier, in order to look at the light from the scintillating material and convert it into an electric signal, related to the energy of the incident particle. Abstract

Intensive theoretical and experimental efforts over the past decade have aimed at explaining the discrepancy between data for the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, $G_{E}/G_{M}$, obtained separately from cross section and polarization transfer measurements. One possible explanation for this difference is a two-photon-exchange (TPEX) contribution. In an effort to search for effects beyond the one-photon-exchange or Born approximation, we report measurements of polarization transfer observables in the elastic $H(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ reaction for three different beam energies at a fixed squared momentum transfer $Q^2 = 2.5$ GeV$^2$, spanning a wide range of the virtual photon polarization parameter, $\epsilon$. From these measured polarization observables, we have obtained separately the ratio $R$, which equals $\mu_p G_{E}/G_{M}$ in the Born approximation, and the longitudinal polarization transfer component $P_\ell$, with statistical and systematic uncertainties of $\Delta R \approx \pm 0.01 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.013 \mbox{(syst)}$ and $\Delta P_\ell/P^{Born}_{\ell} \approx \pm 0.006 \mbox{(stat)}\pm 0.01 \mbox{(syst)}$. The ratio $R$ is found to be independent of $\epsilon$ at the 1.5% level, while the $\epsilon$ dependence of $P_\ell$ shows an enhancement of $(2.3 \pm 0.6) %$ relative to the Born approximation at large $\epsilon$.

Abstract

The reactions 16O(e,e’p) 15N, 208Pb(e,e’p) 207Tl and 12C(e,e’p) 11B were measured in experiments E00–102 and E06–007 performed at JLab (VA, USA) at true quasielastic kinematics (xB = 1) with constant energy (ω) and momentum (q) transferred over a wide pmiss range. These experiments address several open issues in nuclear structure such as the role of relativity and of long-range correlations in the description of nuclei as well as a possible dependence of the spectroscopic factors on Q2. Abstract

We report the measurement of beam-target double spin asymmetries (ALT) in the inclusive production of identified hadrons, e + ³He↑→h+X, using a longitudinally polarized 5.9-GeV electron beam and a transversely polarized ³He target. Hadrons (π±,K±, and proton) were detected at 16° with an average momentum (Ph) = 2.35 GeV/c and a transverse momentum (pT) coverage from 0.60 to 0.68 GeV/c. Asymmetries from the ³He target were observed to be nonzero for π± production when the target was polarized transversely in the horizontal plane. The π+ and π- asymmetries have opposite signs, analogous to the behavior of ALT in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries of charged kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a transversely polarized ³He target. Both the Collins and Sivers moments, which are related to the nucleón transversity and Sivers distributions, respectively, are extracted over the kinematic range of 0.1 < xbj < 0.4 for K+ and K- production. While the Collins and Sivers moments for K+ are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties, both moments for K- favor negative values. The Sivers moments are compared to the theoretical prediction from a phenomenological fit to the world data. Abstract

We report a precise measurement of the parity-violating (PV) asymmetry A&#95;{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{48}Ca. We measure A&#95;{PV}=2668±106(stat)±40(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F&#95;{W}(q=0.8733  fm^{-1})=0.1304±0.0052(stat)±0.0020(syst) and the charge minus the weak form factor F&#95;{ch}-F&#95;{W}=0.0277±0.0055. The resulting neutron skin thickness R&#95;{n}-R&#95;{p}=0.121±0.026(exp)±0.024(model)  fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. The combined CREX and PREX results will have implications for future energy density functional calculations and on the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter.

Abstract

We report high-precision measurements of the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable x&#95;{B}. DVCS is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton form factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of x&#95;{B}, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

Abstract

We report precision determinations of the beam-normal single spin asymmetries (A&#95;{n}) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18 GeV electrons off ^{12}C, ^{40}Ca, ^{48}Ca, and ^{208}Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of A&#95;{n} for ^{40}Ca and ^{48}Ca are found to be similar to that of ^{12}C, consistent with expectations and thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z≤20. We also report A&#95;{n} for ^{208}Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q^{2}) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the Z≤20 nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern A&#95;{n} for nuclei containing ≲50 nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual A&#95;{n} behavior discovered for scattering off ^{208}Pb.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating elastic electron scattering asymmetry on ^{27}Al. The ^{27}Al elastic asymmetry is A&#95;{PV}=2.16±0.11(stat)±0.16(syst)  ppm, and was measured at ⟨Q^{2}⟩=0.02357±0.00010  GeV^{2}, ⟨θ&#95;{lab}⟩=7.61°±0.02°, and ⟨E&#95;{lab}⟩=1.157  GeV with the Q&#95;{weak} apparatus at Jefferson Lab. Predictions using a simple Born approximation as well as more sophisticated distorted-wave calculations are in good agreement with this result. From this asymmetry the ^{27}Al neutron radius R&#95;{n}=2.89±0.12  fm was determined using a many-models correlation technique. The corresponding neutron skin thickness R&#95;{n}-R&#95;{p}=-0.04±0.12  fm is small, as expected for a light nucleus with a neutron excess of only 1. This result thus serves as a successful benchmark for electroweak determinations of neutron radii on heavier nuclei. A tree-level approach was used to extract the ^{27}Al weak radius R&#95;{w}=3.00±0.15  fm, and the weak skin thickness R&#95;{wk}-R&#95;{ch}=-0.04±0.15  fm. The weak form factor at this Q^{2} is F&#95;{wk}=0.39±0.04.

Abstract

We present new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer (Q^{2}) up to 15.75  (GeV/c)^{2}. Combined with existing data, these provide an improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q^{2} and double the range over which a longitudinal or transverse separation of the cross section can be performed. The difference between our results and polarization data agrees with that observed at lower Q^{2} and attributed to hard two-photon exchange (TPE) effects, extending to 8  (GeV/c)^{2} the range of Q^{2} for which a discrepancy is established at >95% confidence. We use the discrepancy to quantify the size of TPE contributions needed to explain the cross section at high Q^{2}.

Abstract

We report measurements of the exclusive neutral pion electroproduction cross section off protons at large values of x&#95;{B} (0.36, 0.48, and 0.60) and Q^{2} (3.1 to 8.4  GeV^{2}) obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E12-06-014. The corresponding structure functions dσ&#95;{T}/dt+εdσ&#95;{L}/dt, dσ&#95;{TT}/dt, dσ&#95;{LT}/dt, and dσ&#95;{LT^{'}}/dt are extracted as a function of the proton momentum transfer t-t&#95;{min}. The results suggest the amplitude for transversely polarized virtual photons continues to dominate the cross section throughout this kinematic range. The data are well described by calculations based on transversity generalized parton distributions coupled to a helicity flip distribution amplitude of the pion, thus providing a unique way to probe the structure of the nucleon.

Abstract

We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A&#95;{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A&#95;{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F&#95;{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616  GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R&#95;{n}-R&#95;{p}=0.283±0.071  fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ&#95;{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo)  fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ&#95;{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo)  fm^{-3}. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract

A beam-normal single-spin asymmetry generated in the scattering of transversely polarized electrons from unpolarized nucleons is an observable related to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange process. We report a 2% precision measurement of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic electron-proton scattering with a mean scattering angle of θ&#95;{lab}=7.9° and a mean energy of 1.149 GeV. The asymmetry result is B&#95;{n}=-5.194±0.067(stat)±0.082 (syst) ppm. This is the most precise measurement of this quantity available to date and therefore provides a stringent test of two-photon exchange models at far-forward scattering angles (θ&#95;{lab}→0) where they should be most reliable.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3)He(↑)(e,e')X on a polarized (3)He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be nonzero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 1.72  GeV, which is nonzero at the 2.89σ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract

We present new data for the polarization observables of the final state proton in the (1)H(γ,p)π(0) reaction. These data can be used to test predictions based on hadron helicity conservation and perturbative QCD. These data have both small statistical and systematic uncertainties and were obtained with beam energies between 1.8 and 5.6 GeV and for π(0) scattering angles larger than 75° in the center-of-mass frame. The data extend the polarization measurements database for neutral pion photoproduction up to E(γ)=5.6 GeV. The results show a nonzero induced polarization above the resonance region. The polarization transfer components vary rapidly with the photon energy and π(0) scattering angle in the center-of-mass frame. This indicates that hadron helicity conservation does not hold and that the perturbative QCD limit is still not reached in the energy regime of this experiment.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive (3)He(e,e'π(±))X reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.16 < x < 0.35 with 1.4 < Q(2) < 2.7 GeV(2). The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The π(±) Collins moments for (3)He are consistent with zero, except for the π(+) moment at x = 0.35, which deviates from zero by 2.3σ. While the π(-) Sivers moments are consistent with zero, the π(+) Sivers moments favor negative values. The neutron results were extracted using the nucleon effective polarization and measured cross section ratios of proton to (3)He, and are largely consistent with the predictions of phenomenological fits and quark model calculations.

Abstract

Intensive theoretical and experimental efforts over the past decade have aimed at explaining the discrepancy between data for the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, G(E)/G(M), obtained separately from cross section and polarization transfer measurements. One possible explanation for this difference is a two-photon-exchange contribution. In an effort to search for effects beyond the one-photon-exchange or Born approximation, we report measurements of polarization transfer observables in the elastic H(e[over →],e(')p[over →]) reaction for three different beam energies at a Q(2)=2.5  GeV(2), spanning a wide range of the kinematic parameter ε. The ratio R, which equals μ(p)G(E)/G(M) in the Born approximation, is found to be independent of ε at the 1.5% level. The ε dependence of the longitudinal polarization transfer component P(ℓ) shows an enhancement of (2.3±0.6)% relative to the Born approximation at large ε., (© 2011 American Physical Society)

Abstract

Among the most fundamental observables of nucleon structure, electromagnetic form factors are a crucial benchmark for modern calculations describing the strong interaction dynamics of the nucleon's quark constituents; indeed, recent proton data have attracted intense theoretical interest. In this Letter, we report new measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio using the recoil polarization method, at momentum transfers Q2=5.2, 6.7, and 8.5  GeV2. By extending the range of Q2 for which G(E)(p) is accurately determined by more than 50%, these measurements will provide significant constraints on models of nucleon structure in the nonperturbative regime.

Abstract

While arterial hypertension and renal dysfunction are well recognized complications of renal irradiation, the mechanisms that trigger the development of these complications are unknown. Recently, it was reported that the endothelium is a major target in radiation injury. Because dysfunction of the endothelial cells may lead or contribute to the development of hypertension and renal dysfunction in radiation nephropathy, we tested the hypothesis that endothelium-dependent vasodilation is impaired in radiated kidneys prior to the onset of hypertension. To test this hypothesis, we used Long-Evans rats that had undergone left nephrectomy (3 weeks earlier) and irradiation (3000 r's) to the right kidney 8 days earlier (mean blood pressures in the irradiated rats were not different than in the controls). We then measured the changes in renal blood flow (RBF) induced by endothelium-dependent (acetylcholine and bradykinin) and -independent (nitroprusside, norepinephrine, and angiotensin II) vasoactive agents. We found that the increases in RBF induced by the endothelium-dependent but not independent vasodilators were markedly impaired in the irradiated kidneys. Blocking nitric oxide synthesis with nitro L-arginine methyl ester in sham rats mimicked the blunted responsiveness of the irradiated rats, whereas indomethacin (an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis) had no effect on either sham or irradiated rats. Finally, the RBF responses to the endothelium-independent vasoconstrictors, norepinephrine and angiotensin II, were not altered in the irradiated kidneys. These results suggest that renal irradiation causes endothelial dysfunction (prior to the onset of hypertension) but spares the vascular smooth muscle cells.

Abstract

Radiation of the kidney often leads to renal failure. The contribution of arterial hypertension to the development of this complication is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the renal effects of antihypertensive therapy in 1- and 2-kidney rat models of radiation nephritis. Five groups of Long Evans rats had X-irradiation of the left kidney. In groups 1 and 2, the right kidney was left undisturbed (2-kidney model). The rats in group 3, 4 and 5 underwent right nephrectomy 21 days before radiation (1-kidney model). Groups 1 and 3 received no drug treatment and served as controls for each model. Groups 2 and 4 had enalapril 50 mg/l in drinking water and group 5 hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) 200 mg/l, also in drinking water. Blood pressure increased significantly in both control groups and remained normal throughout the study in all treated groups. At the end of the study, mean urinary protein excretion was lower in the two enalapril-treated groups but not in HCT-treated animals. Groups 1 and 2 (2-kidney models) showed similar increments in plasma creatinine (PCreat), and, in both groups, the creatinine clearance (CCreat) dropped to the same extent. Among nephrectomized animals (1-kidney model), PCreat was lower and CCreat higher in the enalapril-treated group. Consistent with these findings, glomerular sclerosis was less severe in both enalapril-treated groups. We conclude that, in radiation nephritis, lowering blood pressure with enalapril exerts a beneficial effect on renal function and structure, whereas a similar reduction in blood pressure induced by HCT does not.

Abstract

Calcium channel blockers are antihypertensive agents with diuretic actions. Yet edema occurs in some patients receiving long-term treatment with these drugs. As with other vasodilators, stimulation for fluid retention could result from systemic vasodilation. We speculated that the upright posture could enhance sodium retention. To test this hypothesis, we studied the effect of upright tilt in 10 patients before and after the oral administration of 20 mg nifedipine. Before nifedipine upright tilt caused a 41% drop in the sodium excretion rate, from 0.27 +/- 0.04 to 0.16 +/- 0.03 meq/min (p less than 0.05). Fractional sodium excretion decreased by 46%, from 2.4 +/- 0.5 to 1.3 +/- 0.3% (p less than 0.01). Urinary volume and renal plasma flow also decreased (p less than 0.05). Plasma renin activity (PRA) rose by 46% (p less than 0.005). With the patients in the supine posture nifedipine increased the sodium excretion rate to 0.49 +/- 0.09 meq/min (p less than 0.05). Fractional sodium excretion was 3.1 +/- 0.6 meq/min (p = 0.2). The natriuresis took place despite a fall in mean blood pressure and a significant rise in PRA (up 115% from prenifedipine supine values, p less than 0.005). Renal plasma flow also increased (p less than 0.01). The upright tilt caused a reversal of the nifedipine-induced natriuresis. The sodium excretion rate dropped to 0.23 +/- 0.05 meq/min and fractional sodium excretion to 1.3 +/- 0.2% (both not different from control). This drop in natriuresis occurred while mean blood pressure was at its lowest and PRA was 254% above the initial levels (p less than 0.005).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
