This dataset is a an inventory of 475 alien plant taxa (447 identified to species), including a photo-guide to 96 plants, mostly sold as traditional medicines in three South African cities by traders of South African, West African, East African, Indian and Chinese origin (Williams et al., 2021). The dataset also incorporates species documented in a literature survey of alien plants used for traditional medicines in South Africa. The species inventory is a consolidation of the data from two separate investigations of 106 medicinal plant traders: firstly, a study conducted in 2010/2011 of 77 traders in markets and shops in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban (Williams et al., 2021); and secondly, a study conducted in 2017/2018 of plants sold by 29 (im)migrant traders of West African, East African, and Indian origin in Johannesburg, and of alien species listed in a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) catalogue (Burness, 2019). Accompanying each plant photograph in the photo-guide is the following information: species name; common name(s) provided by the survey respondents; invasive alien plant category; introduction status; voucher specimen number(s); nationality of the medicine traders; and, notes on source localities (e.g. imported or collected in southern Africa). Overall, most of the taxa were from the Asteraceae (12%), Fabaceae (9%) and Poaceae (5%). The species are mostly unlisted (76%) with respect to their legal status in South Africa in terms of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEM:BA), 2004 Alien & Invasive Species (A&IS) regulations. The most frequently recorded species in the various surveys were Glycyrrhiza glabra, Acorus calamus, Angelica sinensis and Zingiber officinale.

Simple Summary Citizen science is the involvement of the public in scientific research, through the collection of data by volunteer members (“citizen scientists”), usually as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists. Beewatching is a citizen science project started in spring 2018. The project target is to acquire information on wild bee species in Italy and to promote knowledge among citizens on the diversity of bees and their importance as pollinators. Moreover, an attempt was made to follow the distribution of two alien bee species present in Italy. During the first two years of the project, 269 users contributed with 1086 reports. Overall, 38 Apoidea genera and 190 plant genera were reported. Furthermore, we received 22 reports of the alien species Megachile sculpturalis. The increasing number of reports and the higher percentage of correct ones throughout the first period of project implementation, but also the ecological data acquired, undoubtfully represent positive outputs, demonstrating the success of Beewatching project. Abstract Bees play a key role in natural and agro-ecosystems and their diversity is worldwide threatened by anthropogenic causes. Despite this, there is little awareness of the existence of the numerous species of wild bees, and the common name “bee” is very often exclusively associated with Apis mellifera. Our aim was to create a citizen science project in Italy with the following objectives: (a) raising awareness of the importance and diversity of bees, (b) obtaining data on the biology, ecology and distribution of Italian species, and (c) launching the monitoring of alien bees. The first step of the project was to create a website platform with a section containing informative datasheets of the wild bee families and of the most common bee genera present in Italy, a form to send reports of observed bees and an interactive map with all citizen’s reports. During the 2 years of the project 1086 reports were sent by 269 users, with 38 Apoidea genera reported on 190 plant genera; furthermore, 22 reports regarding the alien species Megachile sculpturalis arrived. The majority of bees (34 genera) were observed on spontaneous plants, including 115 genera native to Italy. Considering the increasing number of reports and data obtained in these first two years of the project, our objectives seem to be achieved. Future steps will be to outline the profile of beewatchers, to plan activities in a more targeted way, and also to start some sub-projects for conservation purposes.

Background Common names are frequently used inconsistently for marine annelid species used as bait in the peer-reviewed literature, field guides and legislative material. The taxonomy of many such species based on morphology only also ignores cryptic divergences not yet detected. Such inconsistencies hamper effective management of marine annelids, especially as fishing for recreation and subsistence is increasing. This study investigates the scale of the problem by studying the use and names of bait marine annelids in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Methods Fifteen recreational and six subsistence fishers at 12 popular fishing sites in the Western Cape Province donated 194 worms which they identified by common name. Worms were assigned scientific names according to a standard identification key for polychaetes from South Africa, and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) amplified and sequenced. Results This study identified 11 nominal species known by 10 common names, in the families Siphonosomatidae, Arenicolidae, Sabellaridae, Lumbrineridae, Eunicidae, Onuphidae and Nereididae. Cryptic diversity was investigated through employing mitochondrial COI sequences and these data will facilitate future identifications among widely distributed species. Several species (Siphonosoma dayi, Abarenicola gilchristi, Scoletoma species, Marphysa corallina, Lysidice natalensis, Heptaceras quinquedens, Perinereis latipalpa) are reported as bait for the first time, and while the names blood- and moonshineworms were consistently applied to members of Arenicolidae and Onuphidae, respectively, coralworm was applied to members of Sabellaridae and Nereididae. Analysis of COI sequences supported morphological investigations that revealed the presence of two taxonomic units each for specimens initially identified as Gunnarea gaimardi and Scoletoma tetraura according to identification keys. Similarly, sequences for Scoletoma species and Lysidice natalensis generated in this study do not match those from specimens in China and India, respectively. Further research is required to resolve the species complexes detected and also to refine the use of names by fishermen over a wider geographic range.

African mahogany is the common name of species from the Khaya genus and yields high value timber. It is planted in monocultures and agrosilvipastoral systems in Brazil since the 90’s. Here we relate the taxonomic identification of the most planted African mahogany species in Brazil, changing from Khaya ivorensis A. Chev. to K. grandifoliola C. DC. Currently we estimate there is circa 50 thousand hectares of plantations in Brazil, half concentrated in the Southeast region, with the most planted species K. grandifoliola, followed by K. senegalensis (Desr.) A. Juss.

Between 38°50′30”N/7° 04’35 W and 37°10′13”N/7°23′38”W has located the southernmost border of Europe, which stands apart from Portugal and Spain, which separates part of Portugal and Spain, making it one of the furthest from the central European area. A feature of this Spanish-Portuguese border stretch is that it is closely linked to the Guadiana River, one of the major waterways that cross the Iberian Peninsula from east to west. In 1998, the Albufeira Convention was signed, promoting Iberian cooperation at a scientific and technical level to strengthen the links of communication and collaboration at the technical level - the challenge of shared management of the waters and international basins that affect both countries. The Convention presented challenges and objectives on which the competent administrations have been working since then. Another peculiarity of this territory, except in a few situations, is its low population density. Therefore, knowing the demographic and environmental changes of the municipalities bordering the ‘Raya’ (common name as the border is known in these areas) constitutes valuable information that leads to the territorial management of these peripheral areas.

The present article is a part of the project "Linguistic structure of binomial botanical denominations". It explores the denominations of botanical genera that originate from the names of different mythological characters – deities, heroes as well as some gods’ attributes. The examined names are picked based on “Conspectus of the Bulgarian vascular flora”, Sofia, 2012. The names of the plants are arranged in alphabetical order. Beside each Latin name is indicated its English common name and the family that the particular genus belongs to. The article examines the etymology of each name, adding a short account of the myth based on which the name itself is created. An index of ancient authors at the end of the article includes the writers whose works have been used to clarify the etymology of botanical genera names.

Ethnomedicinal plants have a significant role in the lives of people of rural and tribal areas. Thousands of medicinal plant species are used to treat various diseases, including jaundice, and are considered an important therapeutic resource to minimize these diseases. Jaundice (icterus) is a chronic disease that occurs when the amount of bilirubin in the blood increases. This review describes different ethnomedicinal plants used for curing jaundice by tribal and rural people of Himachal Pradesh. The study reveals 87 ethnomedicinal plant species belonging to 51 different families, which are used for treating jaundice in Himachal Pradesh. These plants are arranged in a systematic way, which includes a description of their common name, botanical name, along with its family, plant parts used, region, and mode of use in tabulated form. Some of the plant extracts have already been explored for their phytochemical and pharmacological significance and proved their potential in the preparation of new medicines or drugs against the treatment of jaundice. This review is an attempt to highlight the indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants, which are specifically used for the treatment of jaundice. The data mentioned in the present review is compiled from various sources like existing literature, books, Google Scholar, and Scopus publications. Among all the observed plant species, most used medicinal plants for the treatment of jaundice include Justicia adhatoda, Emblica officinalis, Ricinus communis, Saccharum officinarum, Terminalia chebula, Berberis aristata, Cuscuta reflexa, and Tinospora cordifolia. Plants that are mostly utilized for the treatment of jaundice need to be scientifically validated by pharmacological analysis and should be subsequently used for the preparation of new drugs, which may prove far more beneficial than the existing one.

An extensive study has been made to identify, document, and investigate the ethnomedicinal plants used by Rakhine ethnic minorities in Patuakhali and Barguna District of southern Bangladesh for the term of April 2018 to June 2019. In this article, we have focused on the Rakhine population trends, management concerns, and some actions for conserving the Rakhine population diversity in the study area. In this study, we have identified the locations where Rakhine population lives in Patuakhali and Barguna districts. A total of 86 plant species belonging to 71 genera and 43 families were reported to be used for treating more than 57 various physical ailments under 14 illness categories from the study area. For each of the species, the botanic name, common name, Rakhine name, family, habit, parts used and traditional medicinal uses of the plant species have been presented. The maximum numbers of ethnomedicinal plant species were utilized to treat gastrointestinal complaints (43) taken after by the treatment of dermatological issues (36). The highly cited (75.60%) plant species were found to be Ananas comosus and Aegle marmelos used for gastro-intestinal (Stomach pain, indigestion, and dysentery) digestive disorders and subsequently followed by Colocasia esculenta (70.73%) used for cut, bleeding and wound healing. The results of this study have shown that Rakhine indigenous communities still depend on conventional plant-based medication to remedy various diseases and therapeutic purposes in the study area. Our findings have also shown that despite there have adequate phytodiversity in the natural habitat of the study area but the number of Rakhine population has been declining significantly day-by-day. As an ultimate result, we have lost the plant-based traditional medicinal knowledge of Rakhine indigenous communities in Bangladesh. As a rich source of traditional knowledge and cultural diversity, it calls for urgent initiatives to conserve the cultural heritage of the Rakhine community as well as the diversity of Rakhine ethnic group.

Aedes aegypti bears the common name “the yellow fever mosquito,” although, today, it is of more concern as the major vector of dengue, chikungunya, and, most recently, Zika viruses. In the present article, we review recent work on the population genetics of this mosquito in efforts to reconstruct its recent (approximately 600 years) history and relate these findings to epidemiological records of occurrences of diseases transmitted by this species. The two sources of information are remarkably congruent. Ae. aegypti was introduced to the New World 400–550 years ago from its ancestral home in West Africa via European slave trade. Ships from the New World returning to their European ports of origin introduced the species to the Mediterranean region around 1800, where it became established until about 1950. The Suez Canal opened in 1869 and Ae. aegypti was introduced into Asia by the 1870s, then on to Australia (1887) and the South Pacific (1904).

A new species of Oecanthus is described from extreme northeast California. Oecanthus salviisp. nov. is currently known only from Lake Annie in Modoc County, California, and occurs on sagebrush (Artemisia) and rabbitbrush (Ericameria). It has the narrow tegmina, antennal markings, metanotal gland configuration, and trilling song found in the Oecanthus nigricornis species group. Song details and morphology, including the shape of the subgenital plate and copulatory blades, are provided in this paper. This new species has been given the common name of sage tree cricket.

An extensive survey of the Bulgarian seafood market was conducted to assess the diversity of fish products available and to compare the provided commercial designations (CDs) and scientific names (SNs) on the products with those on the Bulgarian official seafood designations list, in light of the requirements of Regulation (EU) No. 1379/2013 on seafood labelling. The survey was conducted in 15 different towns belonging to three different geographical macro-areas: North, North-east/South-east and South/South-west. Seventy-one points of sale, including both large and local retailers, were included in the study. In total, 1611 different products were recorded on the market, mostly comprising fresh, frozen and canned fish. Analysis of the product designations showed the presence of 110 different CDs, most of which (n = 43, 39.1%) were not associated with any SN. Forty-seven (42.7%) of the 110 CD were compliant with the current EU legislation on seafood labelling, reporting a descriptive common name. A highly significant difference was found in the percentages of non-compliant designations of fresh (57.3%) and frozen (3.9%) product categories (p-value

The most significant contemporary cultivated species in the family Brassicaceae Burnett (syn. Cruciferae Juss.) is Brassica napus L., which is grown on 33,708,547 ha on a global scale, followed far behind by B.oleracea L. subtaxa and cultivar groups and mustards (Brassica spp. and Sinapis spp.), all together with slightly above 4,5 million ha, in 2016 (FAOSTAT 2017). Its primary centre of diversity is the Mediterranean (Zeven & Zhukovsky 1975), having widespread across the world and becoming most extensively produced in with Canada and China, with almost 18.5 t and more than 15 t, respectively (Chai et al. 2017, Phillips 2018). Resulting from the fusion of the whole genomes of B. oleracea (2n = 9) and B. rapa (2n = 10), B. napus is considered an amphidiploid (Li et al. 2017). A considerable variability of morphological and quality traits may have caused a number of synonyms in various taxonomic classifications, such as B. gongylodes Mill., B. napobrassica Mill., B. oleifera Moench nom. illeg., B. praecox Kit. ex Hornem., B. praecox Waldst. & Kit. ex DC., B. rutabaga DC. ex H.Lév., B. rutabaga (DC.) Druce, B. stricta Nestl. ex DC. or C. napus E. H. L. Krause (The Plant List 2013). The Linnean species name, nāpus (Linnaeus 1753, Linnaeus 1758), is a Latin noun, which is derived from the Ancient Greek nâpu, denoting mustards. The synonym of the latter is sínapi, being, in its own turn, a borrowing of the Demotic snwpt, both referring to the same crops (Erichen 1954, Wiktionary 2018). Since the historical linguistic database of both Egyptian and Proto-Afroasiatic, its direct ancestor that was spoken at most 18,000 years ago, is rather abundant, there are many potential candidates for the ultimate origin of the modern scientific sinapis. One pair is the Egyptian sm.w, designating a cruciferous vegetable, and the Proto-Afroasiatic *sayam, denoting grass, while another is the Egyptian sn.w, associated with a kind of ritual food, and the Proto-Afroasiatic *sVny/’-, referring to seed and corn (Militarev 2005, Militarev & Stolbova 2007). This overview is aimed at presenting the subspecies, varieties, forms, cultivar groups and common names relating to B. napus (Porcher 2008, The Plant List 2013, Wiersema & León 2016, Erić et al. 2017, Kew Science 2017, Logos 2018, NPGS 2018, Wikipedia 2018, Wiktionary 2018).

In the literature, such problematic sentences have been approached from semantic and pragmatic perspectives, which correctly draw attention to the relational adjective's basic function of classification. In this paper, we first present an in-depth cross-linguistic inquiry into the phenomenon and reveal commonalities and differences between English and Japanese. Then, we endeavor to show that the observed facts can be explained by extending Adger's (2013) analysis of relational nominals to relational adjectives., Les adjectifs relationnels sont fondamentalement des adjectifs épithètes. Compared to applications that trigger massive information streams, like earthquakes and human disease epidemics, the data input for agricultural and environmental biosecurity events (ie. the introduction of unwanted exotic pests and pathogens), is expected to be sparse and less frequent. To investigate if Twitter data can be useful for the detection and monitoring of biosecurity events, we adopted a three-step process. First, we confirmed that sightings of two migratory species, the Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) and the Common Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus) are reported on Twitter. Second, we developed search queries to extract the relevant tweets for these species. The queries were based on either the taxonomic name, common name or keywords that are frequently used to describe the species (symptomatic or syndromic). Third, we validated the results using ground truth data. Our results indicate that the common name queries provided a reasonable number of tweets that were related to the ground truth data. The taxonomic query resulted in too small datasets, while the symptomatic queries resulted in large datasets, but with highly variable signal-to-noise ratios. No clear relationship was observed between the tweets from the symptomatic queries and the ground truth data. Comparing the results for the two species showed that the level of familiarity with the species plays a major role. The more familiar the species, the more stable and reliable the Twitter data. This clearly presents a problem for using social media to detect the arrival of an exotic organism of biosecurity concern for which public is unfamiliar.

Enumeration of plants with medicinal properties in Lamberi Forest Range, Rajouri J&K revealed 56 plant species belonging to 50 genera and 36 families that can be used to cure different kind of diseases like jaundice, pyorrhea, cough, cold, skin diseases etc. Plant part(s) used to cure these diseases include whole plant (15 spp.), leaves (14 spp.), underground parts comprising of root, rhizome or tuber (11 spp.), fruit (8 spp.), bark (6 species), flower (5 spp.) and seeds (5 spp.). Family Asteraceae (6 spp.) has the maximum number of species followed by Euphorbiaceae (5 spp.) and Lamiaceae (3 spp.). Threats faced by plants in the study area include anthropogenic activities like over-grazing, clearing of forests for agricultural practices, timber extractions, construction of roads and forest fires. The common name, parts and purpose for which these are used and their status has also been presented.

‘Fish Karyome’, a database on karyological information of Indian fishes have been developed that serves as central source for karyotype data about Indian fishes compiled from the published literature. Fish Karyome has been intended to serve as a liaison tool for the researchers and contains karyological information about 171 out of 2438 finfish species reported in India and is publically available via World Wide Web. The database provides information on chromosome number, morphology, sex chromosomes, karyotype formula and cytogenetic markers etc. Additionally, it also provides the phenotypic information that includes species name, its classification, and locality of sample collection, common name, local name, sex, geographical distribution, and IUCN Red list status. Besides, fish and karyotype images, references for 171 finfish species have been included in the database. Fish Karyome has been developed using SQL Server 2008, a relational database management system, Microsoft's ASP.NET-2008 and Macromedia's FLASH Technology under Windows 7 operating environment. The system also enables users to input new information and images into the database, search and view the information and images of interest using various search options. Fish Karyome has wide range of applications in species characterization and identification, sex determination, chromosomal mapping, karyo-evolution and systematics of fishes.

Learning chemistry includes learning the language of chemistry (names, formulae, symbols, and chemical equations) which has to be done in connection with the other areas of chemical knowledge. In this study we investigate how French students understand and use names (of chemical species and common mixtures) and chemical formulae. We set a paper and pencil test composed of open-ended and multiple choice questions (5 questions in total) to students (N= 603) who have been learning chemistry for 2 years (age 14) and others for up to 7 years (age 19, first year university). For all grade levels we found that the students have great difficulties understanding notions introduced right from the first two years of chemistry teaching. The scientific name opposed to a common name does not seem to be a relevant tool used by the students to classify chemical species and mixtures. They struggle to decode a chemical formula out of the context of a chemical equation and fail to decode them in that context. The students surveyed are not able to correctly associate with a name or a formula, both macroscopic (a pure substance or a mixture) and microscopic (an atom or a molecule) criteria. They seem to have mainly a microscopic reading of the names and the chemical formulae. Therefore we think that the language of chemistry could be a source of trouble for the learning of the notion of substance. These results confirm the need to offer teachers new didactical tools to develop the teaching of the language of chemistry.

the word “tea” is popularly used in Brazil as a synonym for the infusion of fruits, leaves, roots, or herbs, such as chamomile, mint, fennel, and lemongrass. the Collegiate Board Resolution (RDC No. 277/2005) defines “tea” as a product consisting of one or more parts of plant species, whole, fragmented, or ground, with or without fermentation, and toasted or untoasted. the product must be designated as “tea,” followed by the common name of the plant species used. The Codex Alimentarius defines children and the elderly as risk groups for the presence of foreign matter in food. this study aims to evaluate the quality of tea offered in a retail market of rio de Janeiro through a research on foreign matter present in ten brands of tea produced from the plant species Pimpinella anisum L. The study was performed using the Food methodologies from the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, 2010 and for plant drug from the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, 2010. Six of the eleven brands presented more than 2% of extraneous matter, the limit established in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia. in all samples was detected the presence of soil and sand, indicating failures in Good Manufacturing Practices as described in the specific legislation.

The study approached the collections of exsiccates belonging to herbaria of the Royal Botanic Gardens (K), Kew, England; Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (P), Paris, France; and New York Botanical Garden (NY), New York, USA, also printed sources and manuscripts. We analyzed more than 2800 exsiccates, comprising the period between 1783 and 2003. From the information labels of the exsiccates, it was possible to obtain the use and common name of the Urticaceae species. A total of thirteen species with register of use were find in the labels, six genera of Urticaceae: five species of Pourouma Aubl., three of Cecropia Loefl., two of Urera Gaudich., one of Boehmeria Jacq., one of Coussapoa Aubl., one of Laportea Gaudich. Five categories of usage were identify: (1) animal feeding; (2) human feeding; (3) medicinal; (4) fiber and (5) fuel. The analysis of the labels registers pointed to be efficient to raise information related to Urticaceae species, and combined to the research of printed sources and manuscripts provide more details to the data. Furthermore, adding information to the review of the collections history in Brazil. It is necessary to establish initiatives which facilitate the access to documents associated to exsiccates, like the manuscripts of collectors, for continuing the advances in the retrieval of knowledge registered. Aim of study: To identify species of wood samples based on common names and anatomical analyses of their transversal surfaces (without microscopic preparations).Area of study: Spain and South America.Material and Methods: The test was carried out on a batch of 15 lumber samples deposited in the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, from the expedition by Ruiz and Pavón (1777-1811). The first stage of the methodology is to search and to make a critical analysis of the databases which list common nomenclature along with scientific nomenclature. A geographic filter was then applied to the information resulting from the samples with a more restricted distribution. Finally an anatomical verification was carried out with a pocket microscope with a magnification of x40, equipped with a 50 micrometers resolution scale.Main results: The identification of the wood based exclusively on the common name is not useful due to the high number of alternative possibilities (14 for “naranjo”, 10 for “ébano”, etc.). The common name of one of the samples (“huachapelí mulato”) enabled the geographic origin of the samples to be accurately located to the shipyard area in Guayaquil (Ecuador). Given that Ruiz y Pavón did not travel to Ecuador, the specimens must have been obtained by Tafalla. It was possible to determine correctly 67% of the lumber samples from the batch. In 17% of the cases the methodology did not provide a reliable identification.Research highlights: It was possible to determine correctly 67% of the lumber samples from the batch and their geographic provenance. This paper addresses the problem of name disambiguation in the context of digital libraries that administer bibliographic citations. The problem occurs when multiple authors share a common name or when multiple name variations for an author appear in citation records. Name disambiguation is not a trivial task, and most digital libraries do not provide an ecient way to accurately identify the citation records for an author. Furthermore, lack of complete meta-data information in digital libraries hinders the development of a generic algorithm that can be applicable to any dataset. We propose a heuristic-based, unsupervised and adaptive method that also examines users’ interactions in order to include users’ feedback in the disambiguation process. Moreover, the method exploits important features associated with author and citation records, such as co-authors, aliation, publication title, venue, etc., creating a multilayered hierarchical clustering algorithm which transforms itself according to the available information, and forms clusters of unambiguous records. Our experiments on a set of researchers’ names considered to be highly ambiguous produced high precision and recall results, and decisively armed the viability of our algorithm.

Origanum vulgare L., common name oregano, family Labiatae, is grown for its aromatic and medicinal properties and as ornamental. In the fall of 2012, a blight was observed in a farm located near Albenga (northern Italy) on 6% of 30,000 50-day-old plants, grown in trays in a peat/perlite mix. Semicircular, water soaked lesions appeared on leaves and stems, starting from the basal ones. As the disease progressed, blighted leaves turned brown, withered, clung to the shoots, and matted on the surrounding foliage. Eventually, infected plants died. Leaf and stem fragments taken from the margin of the diseased tissues belonging to 10 plants were disinfected for 10 s in 1% NaOCl, rinsed with sterile water, and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA). A fungus with the morphological characters of Rhizoctonia solani was consistently recovered. Three isolates of R. solani obtained from affected plants were successfully anastomosed with R. solani isolate AG 1 (ATCC 58946). Three pairings were made for each tester strain. The hyphal diameter at the point of anastomosis was reduced, the anastomosis point was obvious, and death of adjacent cells was observed. Results were consistent with other reports on anastomosis reactions (2). Isolates from oregano were paired with R. solani isolates AG 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 11 and examined microscopically. Anastomosis was not observed in any of the pairings. Tests were conducted twice. Mycelium of 10-day-old isolates from oregano appeared reddish brown, coarse, and radiate. Numerous dark brown sclerotia, 0.3 to 1.0 mm diameter (average 0.7) developed within 10 days after transfer of mycelia to PDA in 90 mm diameter petri dishes at 21 to 24°C. The descriptions of mycelium and sclerotia were typical for subgroup IB Type 1 (4). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified using the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. BLASTn analysis (1) of the 538 bp showed a 99% homology with the sequence of R. solani FJ746937, confirming the morphological identification of the species. The nucleotide sequence has been assigned the GenBank Accession KC493638. For pathogenicity tests, one of the isolates assigned to the anastomosis group AG-1-IB was tested by placing 9 mm diameter mycelial disks removed from PDA 10-day-old cultures of the fungus on leaves of 90-day-old oregano plants (n = 35). Thirty-five plants inoculated with non-inoculated PDA disks served as controls. Plants were covered with plastic bags and maintained in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1°C with 12 h light/dark. The first symptoms, similar to those observed in the farm, developed 3 days after inoculation. Nine days after the artificial inoculation, 50% of plants were dead. About 10 colonies of R. solani were reisolated from infected leaves of inoculated plants. Control plants remained healthy. The pathogenicity test was carried out twice with similar results. Symptoms caused by R. solani have been recently observed on O. vulgare in Greece (3). This is, to our knowledge, the first report of blight of O. vulgare caused by R. solani in Italy. In June 2007, a previously undescribed monkey known locally as “lesula” was found in the forests of the middle Lomami Basin in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We describe this new species as Cercopithecus lomamiensis sp. nov., and provide data on its distribution, morphology, genetics, ecology and behavior. C. lomamiensis is restricted to the lowland rain forests of central DRC between the middle Lomami and the upper Tshuapa Rivers. Morphological and molecular data confirm that C. lomamiensis is distinct from its nearest congener, C. hamlyni, from which it is separated geographically by both the Congo (Lualaba) and the Lomami Rivers. C. lomamiensis, like C. hamlyni, is semi-terrestrial with a diet containing terrestrial herbaceous vegetation. The discovery of C. lomamiensis highlights the biogeographic significance and importance for conservation of central Congo’s interfluvial TL2 region, defined from the upper Tshuapa River through the Lomami Basin to the Congo (Lualaba) River. The TL2 region has been found to contain a high diversity of anthropoid primates including three forms, in addition to C. lomamiensis, that are endemic to the area. We recommend the common name, lesula, for this new species, as it is the vernacular name used over most of its known range.

Bamboo (Bambusoides – Gramineae) is one of the most important natural resource in Southeast Asia. However, bamboo identification has many difficulties. In the area of SEP programme «Indochina Bamboos» (2008-2010), the final objective is to update the bamboo flora of Indochine (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodege) and to publish an e-flora including free access keys, digital images and information about the traditional and economic use of bamboos. During field trips in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodgia, samples, pictures and morphological description sheets were collected in various locations and previously assigned to the local vernacular names. We use an informatic program, Xper2, to assist the comparison and identification of “vernacular bamboo taxa” based on morphological characteristics.

The analysis of brick architectural works in Europe between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century shows that they already exploted the technical and formal material possibilities and they followed the constructive rationality tendency prevailing in the beginnings of the industrial era. These works reveal enough connections among themselves, so as to be able to assemble them under the common name of “19th Century Brick Architecture”, a name beyond nuances of style characteristic of each region or country. This article analyzes those most significant values of the Brick Architecture which allow it to be understood as a step towards modernity., El análisis de las obras de Arquitectura construidas con ladrillo en Europa, entre mediados del siglo XIX y principios del XX, demuestra que explotaban las posibilidades técnicas y formales del material, y seguían la corriente de racionalidad constructiva imperante en los inicios de la era industrial. Estas obras revelan suficientes conexiones entre sí, para poderlas agrupar bajo la denominación común de ''Arquitectura de Ladrillos del siglo XIX", por encima de matices estilísticos propios de cada región o país. En el artículo se analizan aquellos valores más significativos de la Arquitectura de Ladrillos, que permiten entenderla como un paso hacia la modernidad.

We examined the limitations of parataxonomic inventories for developing management plans for woody plant resources in tropical rain forests of southwestern Amazonia. Using compilations of herbarium labels, forest personnel interviews and published species descriptions, we assessed the accuracy of common names as parataxonomic units (PUs). We identified 384 common names for 310 harvested woody plant species in the Brazilian state of Acre, of which only 50% were unique to a single taxonomic species. About 10% of common names referred to more than one species, more than half of which included multiple genera. For the 106 species from the Acre sample common to the MAP region including Madre de Dios, Peru and Pando, Bolivia, we identified 198 common names. Splitting was much more frequent in this sample, with more than 80% of species having more than one common name. When the Acre sample was expanded to 131 species from the Brazilian Amazon region, including the states of Amazonas and Para, we identified 740 common names, with nearly 90% of species being represented by more than one common name. Errors and inaccuracy of parataxonomy may contribute to market instability if product orders can not be homogenized within regional markets, and to unsustainable harvests if species are mistakenly lumped into single parataxonomic units. We discuss several programs currently being implemented by our collaborative team in the region to address this issue, including field guides based on digital photography, field courses, and workshops featuring discussions between regional inventory personnel and botanists.
