10. Assessing Smart Glasses-Based Foodservice Training: An Embodied Learning Theory Approach

Abstract

The present study evaluated active, hands on foodservice training delivered through smart glasses compared to passive, strictly video-based training. Handwashing performance variables were measured, including frequency and efficacy. Participants in the strictly video-based group (N = 24) were four times more likely to wash hands than the smart glasses group (N = 25), (95% CI: 1.129-14.175). The results highlight how smart glasses training where participants physically practice handwashing can result in poorer learning outcomes compared to traditional training methods. This may be due to: (a) the nature of the instructional content which involved prospective memory, compared to previous studies with embodied learning and smart glasses that assessed retrospective memory and motor functions, or (b) the psychological effects of hand cleansing on memory experienced by the smart glasses group during training. Future research could explore the effect of simulation training with smart glasses on other foodservice tasks.

14. Long term survivors with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma treated with gemcitabine: a retrospective analysis

Abstract

Abstract Background Metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma has a short median overall survival (OS) of 5–6 months. However, a subgroup of patients survives more than 1 year. We analyzed the survival outcomes of this subgroup and evaluated clinical and pathological factors that might affect survival durations. Methods We identified 20 patients with metastatic or recurrent pancreatic adenocarcinoma who received single-agent gemcitabine and had an OS longer than 1 year. Baseline data available after the diagnosis of metastatic or recurrent disease was categorized as: 1) clinical/demographic data (age, gender, ECOG PS, number and location of metastatic sites); 2) Laboratory data (Hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose, LDH, renal and liver function and CA19-9); 3) Pathologic data (margins, nodal status and grade); 4) Outcomes data (OS, Time to Treatment Failure (TTF), and 2 year-OS). The lowest CA19-9 levels during treatment with gemcitabine were also recorded. We performed a univariate analysis with OS as the outcome variable. Results Baseline logarithm of CA19-9 and total bilirubin had a significant impact on OS (HR = 1.32 and 1.31, respectively). Median OS and TTF on gemcitabine were 26.9 (95% CI = 18 to 32) and 11.5 (95% CI = 9.0 to 14.3) months, respectively. Two-year OS was 56.4%, with 7 patients alive at the time of analysis. Conclusion A subgroup of patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer has prolonged survival after treatment with gemcitabine. Only bilirubin and CA 19-9 levels were predictive of longer survival in this population. Further analysis of potential prognostic and predictive markers of response to treatment and survival are needed.

17. Incorporating Financial Well-Being into Behavioral Health Social Work Education

Abstract

Teaching financial well-being (FWB) content in social work education programs is gaining prominence in response to both the needs of the students themselves and the clients they serve. However, the content is usually associated with the macro domain or taught as a stand-alone methods course, and thus is rarely incorporated into generalist or direct practice classes. One area where integrating a financial perspective is important is in behavioral health. This paper reviews the importance of teaching FWB content in social work behavioral health classes and explores the relationship between FWB and behavioral health (as pertaining to mental health, habits and addictions, and physical health). It concludes with a discussion of how students can develop personal and professional competencies and how to engage, assess, and intervene in cases impacted by financial concerns.

Abstract

Articular cartilage injuries are debilitating and often lead to osteoarthritis: a foremost cause of disability worldwide. Currently no interventions provide satisfactory long-term outcomes. Successful regeneration of articular cartilage through early stage intervention would be life-changing for millions of individuals. Providing suitable mechanical stimulation to promote articular cartilage regrowth is a crucial element to achieve success. Articular cartilage is complex with in-homogenous mechanical properties which have not been not well characterised: a clear barrier to designing suitable orthopaedic implants for this application. Furthermore, it is necessary to interrogate intended implants to ensure they are providing appropriate loading to cells throughout the entire volumetric device. Digital volume correlation (DVC) offers the potential for non-destructive three-dimensional visualisation of deformation. The technique relies upon tracking the displacement of features within a sample across three-dimensional scans with successive in-situ loading applied. Analysis provides quantification of displacement and strain components within the three-dimensional volume. A method was developed to utilise the cells within articular cartilage as natural features for DVC and was validated against established 2D histological analysis. DVC of human articular cartilage provided 3D strain measurements with sufficient spatial resolution to inform implant design, with measurements compared against manually-calculated values (R2 = 0.93). Subsequently DVC of novel hybrid materials implants enabled strain to be visualised within individual struts of the scaffolds (R2 = 0.98): providing the necessary intra-device resolution for successful matching of mechanical properties. Finally the complete tissue-biomaterial system was assessed using DVC with an explant analysed after six weeks of implantation within an ovine model, enabling measurement of implant micromotion and strain fields across the system components. In conclusion, DVC was successfully utilised to characterise strain within articular cartilage, novel biomaterials and tissue-biomaterial systems. Incorporating the technique as part of the device development pathway could be an effective tool to regenerate articular cartilage.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to evaluate the impact of consultant pharmacist-directed anticoagulation management in the post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) setting. DESIGN: Retrospective study. PARTICIPANTS: Patients whose clinical details were included in the ASCP aggregate data and were older than 65 years of age, admitted to PALTC facility, and had active anticoagulant therapy were included in the study. INTERVENTIONS: Pharmacists enrolled in the ASCP (Quality Improvement Project) and performed monthly chart reviews per standard practice. The 30-day postchart review follow-up data were entered into the ASCP data collection. The research team assessed for consultant pharmacist interventions associated with anticoagulant therapy management. RESULTS: Data were collected from November 2022 through March 2023, during which 807 charts were assessed. Within the charts reviewed, 274 patients received anticoagulation therapy, of which 173 (63%) were identified as having a medication-related problem concerning anticoagulant use. Two hundred sixteen pharmacist recommendations were sent to providers to address the inappropriate anticoagulant therapy. Providers completed modifications to 190 (88%) of the recommendations. CONCLUSION: This study emphasized pharmacist involvement in managing anticoagulant therapy within the PALTC setting and identified the need for further investigation of patient specific outcomes. 48. Do Embedded Assessments in a Dual-Level Food Chemistry Course Offer Measurable Learning Advantages?

Abstract

The 2011 passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act requires managers to teach and verify that employees have learned and are engaged in science-based food safety behaviors. Instructors using embedded assessments such as clickers can receive immediate feedback on how well learners understand what is being taught, allowing instructors to provide immediate, additional clarification and motivation. The objectives of this study were to: design and implement embedded assessment learning activities for each lecture objective in a combined undergraduate/graduate-level, food chemistry course; measure students' performance on three online examinations; and compare students' performance on objectives reinforced by embedded assessment techniques against those objectives receiving traditional emphasis. For Exam 1, embedded assessment questions averaged 80.0% and traditional emphasis questions averaged 76.4%; for Exam 2, embedded assessment questions averaged 84.6% and traditional emphasis questions averaged 80.6%; and for Exam 3, embedded assessment questions averaged 85.9% and traditional emphasis questions averaged 73.7%. Pooling scores over all exams gave a grand mean of 83.6% for embedded assessment questions and 77.2% for traditional questions. As hypothesized, the average scores on questions reinforced by embedded assessment were considerably higher, 8.3% overall, with significantly (P < 0.05) higher scores. During lectures, students commented on the embedded assessments that then led to further discussion of any unclear points. When the class did poorly, operationalized as less than 80% correct, they petitioned to get a "do over" on the embedded assessment question after a clarifying discussion. Because the students became managers of their own learning, through embedded assessments, it is hoped that they will become more proficient instructors.
