We use a subignition scale laser, the 30 kJ Omega, and a novel shallow-cone target to study laser-plasma interactions at the ablation-plasma density scale lengths and laser intensities anticipated for direct drive shock-ignition implosions at National Ignition Facility scale. Our results show that, under these conditions, the dominant instability is convective stimulated Raman scatter with experimental evidence of two plasmon decay (TPD) only when the density scale length is reduced. Particle-in-cell simulations indicate this is due to TPD being shifted to lower densities, removing the experimental back-scatter signature and reducing the hot-electron temperature. The experimental laser energy-coupling to hot electrons was found to be 1%--2.5%, with electron temperatures between 35 and 45 keV. Radiation-hydrodynamics simulations employing these hot-electron characteristics indicate that they should not preheat the fuel in MJ-scale shock ignition experiments.

As an alternative inertial confinement fusion scheme with predicted high energy gain and more robust designs, shock ignition requires a strong converging shock driven by a shaped pulse with a high-intensity spike at the end to ignite a pre-compressed fusion capsule. Understanding nonlinear laser-plasma instabilities in shock ignition conditions is crucial to assess and improve the laser-shock energy coupling. Recent experiments conducted on the OMEGA-EP laser facility have for the first time demonstrated that such instabilities can $\sim$100\% deplete the first 0.5 ns of the high-intensity laser pump. Analysis of the observed laser-generated blast wave suggests that this pump-depletion starts at 0.01--0.02 critical density and progresses to 0.1--0.2 critical density. This pump-depletion is also confirmed by the time-resolved stimulated Raman backscattering spectra. The dynamics of the pump-depletion can be explained by the breaking of ion-acoustic waves in stimulated Brillouin scattering. Such strong pump-depletion would inhibit the collisional laser energy absorption but may benefit the generation of hot electrons with moderate temperatures for electron shock ignition [Shang et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 119 195001 (2017)].

The direct and indirect drive schemes for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) make use of a large number of laser beams arranged in a symmetric angular distribution. The preferential decay geometry of the three waves resonant couplings, mainly responsible for backscattered light in single beam experiments, may then be deeply modified in the region of crossing beams where collective laser plasma instabilities could develop. Such instabilities can occur for laser beams having a common symmetry axis along which they drive a common daughter wave. The collective coupling results in an increase of the growth gain with the increase of the number of interacting beams and produce energy losses in new backward directions. We have taken advantage of the multiple beams of the Omega laser facility and of its large battery of diagnostics to study the physics related to this multiple beams interaction in the regimes of high temperature plasmas relevant of the direct and indirect drive schemes to ICF. Experiments performed in a planar open geometry have evidenced the large amplification of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) electromagnetic waves almost transverse to the density gradient as theoretically predicted 40 years ago. This was achieved in long scale-length high-temperature plasmas in which two beams couple to the same scattered electromagnetic wave further demonstrating this multiple-beams collective SRS interaction. The collective nature of the coupling and the amplification at large angles from the density gradient increase the global SRS losses and produce light scattered in novel directions out of the planes of incidence of the beams. Indirect drive experiments were performed in rugby ball shaped Hohlraum irradiated by 40 beams. Large instantaneous (peak reflectivity >30%) Brillouin sidescattering was evidenced to originate from the collective Brillouin amplification of a shared ion acoustic wave driven along the Hohlraum axis by a cone of 10 beams. In this paper, the scattering geometry is detailed for the two types of collective instabilities showing that they produce light scattered in novel very precise directions located far from the original aperture of the beams where the diagnostics are usually set-up. This scattered light could be measured on Omega thanks to the flexibility of the facility. Key features of the light scattered by collective instabilities are identified that would allow to recognize their signatures in more complex, less diagnosed experiments.

Low-mode asymmetries have emerged as one of the primary challenges to achieving high-performing inertial confinement fusion implosions. These asymmetries seed flows in the implosions, which will manifest as modifications to the measured ion temperature (Tion) as inferred from the broadening of primary neutron spectra. The effects are important to understand (i) to learn to control and mitigate low-mode asymmetries and (ii) to experimentally more closely capture thermal Tion used as input in implosion performance metric calculations. In this paper, results from and simulations of a set of experiments with a seeded mode 2 in the laser drive are described. The goal of this intentionally asymmetrically driven experiment was to test our capability to predict and measure the signatures of flows seeded by the low-mode asymmetry. The results from these experiments [first discussed in M. Gatu Johnson et al., Phys. Rev. E 98, 051201(R) (2018)] demonstrate the importance of interplay of flows seeded by various asymmetry seeds. In particular, measured Tion and self-emission x-ray asymmetries are expected to be well captured by interplay between flows seeded by the imposed mode 2 and the capsule stalk mount. Measurements of areal density asymmetry also indicate the importance of the stalk mount as an asymmetry seed in these implosions. The simulations brought to bear on the problem (1D LILAC, 2D xRAGE, 3D ASTER, and 3D Chimera) show how thermal Tion is expected to be significantly lower than Tion as inferred from the broadening of measured neutron spectra. They also show that the electron temperature is not expected to be the same as Tion for these implosions.

International audience; Experiments were performed with CH, Be, C, and SiO2 ablators interacting with high-intensity UV laser radiation (5 × 1015 W/cm2, λ = 351 nm) to determine the optimum material for hot-electron production and strong-shock generation. Significantly more hot electrons are produced in CH (up to ∼13% instantaneous conversion efficiency), while the amount is a factor of ∼2 to 3 lower in the other ablators. A larger hot-electron fraction is correlated with a higher effective ablation pressure. The higher conversion efficiency in CH is attributed to stronger damping of ion-acoustic waves because of the presence of light H ions.

A hot, 2 to 3 keV electron temperature surface plasma was observed in the interaction of a 0.7 ps petawatt laser beam with solid copper-foil targets at intensities > 10(20) W/cm(2). Copper K-shell spectra were measured in the range of 8 to 9 keV using a single-photon-counting x-ray charged-coupled-device camera. In addition to K-alpha and K-beta inner-shell lines, the emission contained the Cu He-alpha and Ly(alpha) lines, allowing the temperature to be inferred. These lines have not been observed previously with ultrafast laser pulses. For intensities less than 3 x 10(18) W/cm(2), only the K-alpha and K-beta inner-shell emissions are detected. Measurements of the absolute K-alpha yield as a function of the laser intensity are in general agreement with a model that includes refluxing and confinement of the suprathermal electrons in the target volume. The use of a single-photon-counting x-ray charge-coupled device (CCD) camera as an x-ray spectrometer is a well-established technique in ultrashort-pulse laser experiments. In single-photon-counting mode, the pixel value of each readout pixel is proportional to the energy deposited from the incident x-ray photon. For photons below 100 keV, a significant fraction of the events deposits all the energy in a single pixel. A histogram of the pixel readout values gives a good approximation of the x-ray spectrum. This technique requires almost no alignment, but it is very sensitive to signal-to-background issues, especially in a high-energy petawatt environment. Shielding the direct line of sight to the target was not sufficient to obtain a high-quality spectrum, for the experiments reported here the CCD camera had to be shielded from all sides with up to 10 cm of lead. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.

A comprehensive scientific program is being pursued at LLE to explore the physics of fast ignition. The OMEGA EP Laser was completed in April 2008, adjacent to the 60 beam, 30 kJ OMEGA Laser Facility. OMEGA EP consists of four beamlines with a NIF-like architecture, each delivering up to 6.5 kJ of UV laser energy in long pulse (ns) mode into the OMEGA EP target chamber. Two of the beamlines can operate as high-energy petawatt lasers, with up to 2.6 kJ each with 10 ps pulse duration. These beams can either be injected into the OMEGA EP target chamber or combined collinearly into the existing OMEGA target chamber for integrated fast-ignitor experiments. Fuel-assembly experiments on OMEGA have achieved high fuel areal densities, and the effects of a cone on the fuel assembly are being studied. Experiments on short-pulse laser systems in collaboration with other institutions are being pursued to investigate the conversion efficiency from laser energy to fast electrons. A coherent transition radiation diagnostic to study the transport of the electrons in high-density material is being developed. Integrated experiments with room-temperature targets on OMEGA will be performed in 2008. Simulations of these integrated experiments show significant heating of up to 1 keV due to the hot electrons from the short-pulse laser. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Kα radiation generated by interaction of an ultrashort (1 ps) laser with thin (25 μm) Ti foils at high intensity (2× 1016 W cm2) is analyzed using data from a spherical Bragg crystal imager and a single hit charge-coupled device spectrometer together with Monte Carlo simulations of Kα brightness. Laser to Kα and electron conversion efficiencies have been determined. We have also measured an effective crystal reflectivity of 3.75±2%. Comparison of imager data with data from the relatively broadband single hit spectrometer has revealed a reduction in crystal collection efficiency for high Kα yield. This is attributed to a shift in the K -shell spectrum due to Ti ionization. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

The significance and nature of ion kinetic effects in D3He-filled, shock-driven inertial confinement fusion implosions are assessed through measurements of fusion burn profiles. Over this series of experiments, the ratio of ion-ion mean free path to minimum shell radius (the Knudsen number, NK) was varied from 0.3 to 9 in order to probe hydrodynamic-like to strongly kinetic plasma conditions; as the Knudsen number increased, hydrodynamic models increasingly failed to match measured yields, while an empirically-tuned, first-step model of ion kinetic effects better captured the observed yield trends [Rosenberg et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 185001 (2014)]. Here, spatially resolved measurements of the fusion burn are used to examine kinetic ion transport effects in greater detail, adding an additional dimension of understanding that goes beyond zero-dimensional integrated quantities to one-dimensional profiles. In agreement with the previous findings, a comparison of measured and simulated burn profiles shows that models including ion transport effects are able to better match the experimental results. In implosions characterized by large Knudsen numbers (NK ∼ 3), the fusion burn profiles predicted by hydrodynamics simulations that exclude ion mean free path effects are peaked far from the origin, in stark disagreement with the experimentally observed profiles, which are centrally peaked. In contrast, a hydrodynamics simulation that includes a model of ion diffusion is able to qualitatively match the measured profile shapes. Therefore, ion diffusion or diffusion-like processes are identified as a plausible explanation of the observed trends, though further refinement of the models is needed for a more complete and quantitative understanding of ion kinetic effects.

Integrated experiments to investigate the ultrafast heating of implosions using cone/shell geometries have been performed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The experiments used the 1054 nm, nanosecond, 0.9 kJ output of the VULCAN Nd:glass laser to drive 486 μm diameter, 6 μm wall thickness Cu-doped deuterated plastic (CD) shells in 6-beam cubic symmetry. Measurements of the opacity of the compressed plasma using two-dimensional spatially resolved Ti-Kα x-ray radiography suggest that densities of 4 g cm−3 and areal densities of 40 mg cm−2 were achieved at stagnation. Upper limits on the heating with both 1 ps and 10 ps pulses were deduced from the fluorescent yield from the Cu dopant. The data suggest that control of the preformed plasma scale-length inside the cone is necessary for efficient coupling to the compressed plasma.

Significant progress has been made in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics since the 2009 IFSA Conference [R.L. McCrory et al. , J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. 244 , 012004 (2010)]. Areal densities of 300mg/cm2 have been measured in cryogenic target implosions with neutron yields 15% of 1-D predictions. A model of crossed-beam energy transfer has been developed to explain the observed scattered-light spectrum and laser–target coupling. Experiments show that its impact can be mitigated by changing the ratio of the laser beam to target diameter. Progress continues in the development of the polar-drive concept that will allow direct-drive–ignition experiments to be conducted on the National Ignition Facility using the indirect-drive-beam layout.

Shock-ignition experiments with peak laser intensities of ∼8 × 1015 W/cm2 were performed. D2 -filled plastic shells were compressed on a low adiabat by 40 of the 60 OMEGA beams. The remaining 20 beams were delayed and tightly focused onto the imploding shell to generate a strong shock. Up to 35% backscattering of laser energy was measured at the highest intensity. Hard x-ray measurements reveal a relatively low hot-electron temperature of ∼40 keV, independent of intensity and spike onset time.

Cone-guided fast ignition laser fusion depends critically on details of the interaction of an intense laser pulse with the inside tip of a cone. Generation of relativistic electrons in the laser plasma interaction (LPI) with a gold cone and their subsequent transport into a copper wire have been studied using a kJ-class intense laser pulse, OMEGA EP (850 J, 10 ps). Weobserved that the laser-pulse-energy-normalized copper K signal from the Cu wire attached to the Au cone is significantly reduced (by a factor of 5) as compared to that from identical targets using the Titan laser (150 J, 0.7 ps) with 60 × less energy in the prepulse. We conclude that the decreased coupling is due to increased prepulse energy rather than 10 ps pulse duration, for which this effect has not been previously explored. The collisional particle-in-cell code PICLS demonstrates that the preformed plasma has a significant impact on generation of electrons and their transport. In particular, a longer scale length preplasma significantly reduces the energy coupling from the intense laser to the wire due to the larger offset distance between the relativistic critical density surface and the cone tip as well as a wider divergence of source electrons. We also observed that laser-driven plasma ionization increase in the LPI region can potentially alter the electron density profile during the laser interaction, forcing the electron source to be moved farther away from the cone tip which contributes to the reduction of energy coupling. © IOP Publishing and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

We review recent experimental results on the path to producing electron-positron pair plasmas using lasers. Relativistic pair-plasmas and jets are believed to exist in many astrophysical objects and are often invoked to explain energetic phenomena related to Gamma Ray Bursts and Black Holes. On earth, positrons from radioactive isotopes or accelerators are used extensively at low energies (sub-MeV) in areas related to surface science positron emission tomography and basic antimatter science. Experimental platforms capable of producing the high-temperature pair-plasma and high-flux jets required to simulate astrophysical positron conditions have so far been absent. In the past few years, we performed extensive experiments generating positrons with intense lasers where we found that relativistic electron and positron jets are produced by irradiating a solid gold target with an intense picosecond laser pulse. The positron temperatures in directions parallel and transverse to the beam both exceeded 0.5 MeV, and the density of electrons and positrons in these jets are of order 1016 cm-3 and 1013 cm-3, respectively. With the increasing performance of high-energy ultra-short laser pulses, we expect that a high-density, up to 1018 cm-3, relativistic pair-plasma is achievable, a novel regime of laboratory-produced hot dense matter. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Detailed angle and energy resolved measurements of positrons ejected from the back of a gold target that was irradiated with an intense picosecond duration laser pulse reveal that the positrons are ejected in a collimated relativistic jet. The laser-positron energy conversion efficiency is ∼2×10{-4}. The jets have ∼20 degree angular divergence and the energy distributions are quasimonoenergetic with energy of 4 to 20 MeV and a beam temperature of ∼1 MeV. The sheath electric field on the surface of the target is shown to determine the positron energy. The positron angular and energy distribution is controlled by varying the sheath field, through the laser conditions and target geometry.

Advanced ignition concepts, such as fast ignition and shock ignition, are being investigated at the Omega Laser Facility. Integrated fast-ignition experiments with room-temperature re-entrant cone targets have begun, using 18 kJ of 351 nm drive energy to implode empty 40 νm thick CD shells, followed by 1.0 kJ of 1053 nm wavelength, short-pulse energy. Short pulses of 10 ps width have irradiated the inside of a hollow gold re-entrant cone at the time of peak compression. A threefold increase in the time-integrated, 2 to 7 keV x-ray emission was observed with x-ray pinhole cameras, indicating that energy is coupled from the short-pulse laser into the core by fast electrons. In shock-ignition experiments, spherical plastic-shell targets were compressed to high areal densities on a low adiabat, and a strong shock wave was sent into the converging, compressed capsule. In one experiment, 60 beams were used with an intensity spike at the end of the laser pulse, and the implosion performance was studied through neutron-yield and areal-density measurements. In a second experiment, the 60 OMEGA beams were split into a 40+20 configuration, with 40 low-intensity beams used for fuel assembly and 20 delayed beams with a short, high-intensity pulse shape (up to 1 × 1016 W cm-2) for shock generation. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

An integrated experiment relevant to fast ignition. A Cu-doped deuterated polymer spherical shell target with an inserted hollow Au cone is imploded by a six-beam 900-J, 1-ns laser. A 10-ps, 70-J laser pulse is focused into the cone at the time of peak compression. The flux of high-energy electrons through the imploded material is determined from the yield of Cu Kα fluorescence by comparison with a Monte Carlo model. The electrons are estimated to carry about 15% of the laser energy. Collisional and Ohmic heating are modeled, and Ohmic effects are shown to be relatively unimportant. An electron spectrometer shows significantly greater reduction of the transmitted electron flux than is calculated in the model. Enhanced scattering by instability-induced magnetic fields is suggested. An extension of this fluor-based technique to measurement of coupling efficiency to the ignition hot spot in future larger-scale fast ignition experiments is outlined. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

The generation of extremely bright coherent X-ray pulses in the femtosecond and attosecond regime is currently one of the most exciting frontiers of physics–allowing, for the first time, measurements with unprecedented temporal resolution1,2,3,4,5,6. Harmonics from laser–solid target interactions have been identified as a means of achieving fields as high as the Schwinger limit2,7 (E=1.3×1016 V m−1) and as a highly promising route to high-efficiency attosecond (10−18 s) pulses8 owing to their intrinsically phase-locked nature. The key steps to attain these goals are achieving high conversion efficiencies and a slow decay of harmonic efficiency to high orders by driving harmonic production to the relativistic limit1. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of high harmonic generation in the relativistic limit, obtained on the Vulcan Petawatt laser9. High conversion efficiencies (η>10−6 per harmonic) and bright emission (>1022 photons s−1 mm−2 mrad−2 (0.1% bandwidth)) are observed at wavelengths

Isochoric heating by electrons has been measured in the two limiting cases of small area thin foils with dominant refluxing and cone-long-wire geometry with negligible refluxing in the wire. Imaging of Cu K alpha fluorescence, crystal x-ray spectroscopy of Cu K shell emission, and XUV imaging at 68eV and 256eV are discussed. Laser power on target was typically 0.5 PW in 0.7ps. Heating by focused proton beams generated at the concave inside surface of a hemi-shell and from a sub hemi-shell inside a 30 degrees cone has been studied with the same diagnostic methods plus imaging of proton induced K alpha. Conversion efficiency to protons has been measured and modeled. Conclusions from the experiments, links to theoretical understanding and relevance to fast ignition are outlined.

With the addition of recent PW shots, the propagation of short-pulse laser generated electron beams have been studied using laser pulse energies from 30 J to 300 J, generating currents up to ∼15 MA in solid Al:Cu targets. This is ∼5% of the current that will be required in an ignition pulse. To this level, the current appears to simply scale with laser power, the propagation spread not change at all. The resistance of the aluminum does not seem to play a role in the propagation characteristics, though it might in setting the current starting parameters. We do find that at the highest currents parts of these targets reach temperatures high enough to modify the Cu-K2 emission spectrum rendering our Bragg imaging mirrors ineffective; spectrometers will be needed to collect data at these higher temperatures. © EDP Sciences.

The operation of target diagnostics in a high-energy petawatt laser environment is made challenging by the large number of energetic electrons, hard x rays, and energetic particles produced in laser-target interactions. The charged particles and x rays from the target create secondary radiation and a large electromagnetic pulse (EMP) when they hit structures inside the target chamber. The primary particles create secondary particles and radiation that can create excessive background in sensitive detectors. The large EMP can impair or damage electronic equipment and detectors, especially inside the target chamber. Shielding and EMP mitigation strategies developed during experiments at the Rutherford Appleton Vulcan petawatt laser facility will be presented for a variety of detection systems, such as single-photon-counting x-ray charge-coupled device cameras, multiple diamond x-ray detectors, and scintillator-photomultiplier detectors. These strategies will be applied to the development of diagnostic systems for the OMEGA EP, high-energy petawatt laser facility, currently under construction at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

We show that short pulse laser generated Ti Kα radiation can be used effectively as a backlighter for radiographic imaging. This method of x-ray radiography features high temporal and spatial resolution, high signal to noise ratio, and monochromatic imaging. We present here the Ti Kα backlit images of six-beam driven spherical implosions of thin-walled 500-μm Cu-doped deuterated plastic (CD) shells and of similar implosions with an included hollow gold cone. These radiographic results were used to define conditions for the diagnosis of fast ignition relevant electron transport within imploded Cu-doped coned CD shells. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Ion-acceleration processes have been studied in ultraintense laser plasma interactions for normal incidence irradiation of solid deuterated targets via neutron spectroscopy. The experimental neutron spectra strongly suggest that the ions are preferentially accelerated radially, rather than into the bulk of the material from three-dimensional Monte Carlo fitting of the neutron spectra. Although the laser system has a ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$ contrast ratio, a two-dimensional magnetic hydrodynamics simulation shows that the laser pedestal generates a $10\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ scale length in the coronal plasma with a $3\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ scale-length plasma near the critical density. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, incorporating this realistic density profile, indicate that the acceleration of the ions is caused by a collisionless shock formation. This has implications for modeling energy transport in solid density plasmas as well as cone-focused fast ignition using the next generation PW lasers currently under construction.

Fuel-ion species dynamics in hydrodynamiclike shock-driven DT^{3}He-filled inertial confinement fusion implosion is quantitatively assessed for the first time using simultaneously measured D^{3}He and DT reaction histories. These reaction histories are measured with the particle x-ray temporal diagnostic, which captures the relative timing between different nuclear burns with unprecedented precision (∼10 ps). The observed 50±10 ps earlier D^{3}He reaction history timing (relative to DT) cannot be explained by average-ion hydrodynamic simulations and is attributed to fuel-ion species separation between the D, T, and ^{3}He ions during shock convergence and rebound. At the onset of the shock burn, inferred ^{3}He/T fuel ratio in the burn region using the measured reaction histories is much higher as compared to the initial gas-filled ratio. As T and ^{3}He have the same mass but different charge, these results indicate that the charge-to-mass ratio plays an important role in driving fuel-ion species separation during strong shock propagation even for these hydrodynamiclike plasmas.

Simultaneously measured DD, DT, and D3He reaction histories are used to probe the impacts of multi-ion physics during the shock phase of inertial confinement fusion implosions. In these relatively hydrodynamiclike (burn-averaged Knudsen number ⟨NK⟩ ∼0.3) shock-driven implosions, average-ion hydrodynamic DUED simulations are able to reasonably match burnwidths, nuclear yields, and ion temperatures. However, kinetic-ion FPION simulations are able to better simulate the timing differences and time-resolved reaction rate ratios between DD, DT, and D3He reactions. FPION simulations suggest that the D3He/DT reaction rate ratio is most directly impacted by ion species separation between the 3He and T ions, whereas the D3He/DD reaction rate ratio is affected by both ion species separation and ion temperature decoupling effects.
