In the last century, a blue–green colored gemstone known as Larimar with a special sea-wave pattern was discovered in the Dominican Republic. Larimar is composed of the mineral pectolite, which has a chemical composition of NaCa2Si3O8(OH) and is usually white in color. Cu2+ has always been considered to be the primary genesis of the blue color shown in Larimar, because native copper often grows together with Larimar. To clarify whether copper is the main reason for the origin of blue–green pectolite, we utilized laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) techniques to analyze trace elements in the pectolite samples and compared the relationship between elements and colors. The results show that vanadium and iron are the main origins of the sky-blue and green color of Larimar. We also discovered that it is not only the chemical elements that affect the color shades of the mineral, but the orientation of the radial fiber crystals also plays a critical role. The sea-wave pattern and the changes in the color saturation of radial pectolite are due to the transmittance of visible light through different viewed angles under changing crystal orientations. Our results reveal the chemical and physical factors behind the color and sea-wave pattern of Larimar. In addition, to our knowledge, this is the first time that the formation age of Larimar has been proven to be approximately equal to or younger than 40 ka, using the U-Th dating of calcite growth together with pectolite. Abstract Background The prevalence of resistance to fusidic acid of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was increased each year in a Taiwan hospital. Thirty-four MRSA clinical isolates collected in 2007 and 2008 with reduced susceptibility to FA were selected for further evaluation the presence of resistance determinants. Results The most common resistance determinant was fusC, found in 25 of the 34 MRSA isolates. One of the 25 fusidic acid-resistant MRSA harboured both fusB and fusC, which is the first time this has been identified. Mutations in fusA were found in 10 strains, a total of 3 amino-acid substitutions in EF-G (fusA gene) were detected. Two substitutions with G556S and R659L were identified for the first time. Low-level resistance to fusidic acid (MICs, ≤ 32 μg/ml) was found in most our collection. All collected isolates carried type III SCCmec elements. MLST showed the isolates were MRSA ST239. PFGE revealed nine different pulsotypes in one cluster. Conclusions Our results indicate that the increase in the number of fusidic acid resistant among the MRSA isolates in this hospital is due mainly to the distribution of fusC determinants. Moreover, more than one fusidic acid-resistance mechanism was first detected in a same stain in our collection.

The northwestern Pacific Ocean and South China Sea are where tropical cyclones occur most frequently. Many climatologists also study the formation of Pacific Ocean warm pools and typhoons in this region. This study collected data of paleotyphoons found in China's official historical records over the past 2000 years that contained known typhoon activity reports. The collected data are then subjected to statistical analyses focusing on typhoon activity in coastal regions of southeastern China to garner a better understanding of the long-term evolution of moving paths and occurrence frequency, especially regarding those typhoons making landfall in mainland China. We analyzed the data with the year and month of each typhoon event, as well as the number of events in a 10-year period. The result shows that (1) north–southward migration of typhoon paths corresponds to the north–southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and Little Ice Age (LIA) and (2) paleotyphoons made landfall in mainland China 1 month earlier during the MWP than during the LIA. This implies a northward shift in ITCZ during the MWP. Typhoons tend to make landfall in Japan during El Niño-like periods and strike the southern coastal regions of China during La Niña-like stages. According to paleotyphoon records over the last 2000 years, typhoons made landfall in southeastern China frequently around 490–510, 700–850, and after 1500 CE The number of typhoons striking Guangdong Province peaked during the coldest period in 1660–1680 CE; however, after 1700 CE, landfall has migrated farther north. The track of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the northwestern Pacific Ocean is affected by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), which shows a nearly 30-year and a 60-year cycle during the LIA. ABSTRACT SHV-12 is the most widespread resistance determinant of Enterobacter cloacae in Taiwan; however, blaSHV-12 has rarely been mobilized. Six multidrug-resistant E. cloacae isolates were collected. After conjugal transfer, plasmid profiling and analysis of incompatibility groups was performed to characterize the genetic context of blaSHV-12-containing fragments. The presence of mobile genetic elements was demonstrated by PCR, cloning, sequencing and bioinformatics analyses. Four different β-lactamase genes ( blaTEM-1, blaSHV-12, blaCTX-M-3 and/or blaCTX-M-14) were observed in the conjugative plasmids belonging to the IncHI2 ( n = 4), IncI1 or IncP incompatibility groups. The IS 26-blaSHV-12-IS 26 locus was located in five different genetic environments. A novel structural organization of a class 1 integron with the aac(6')-IIc cassette truncated by IS 26 was identified in one isolate. Thus, blaSHV-12 was obtained from different plasmids through IS 26-mediated homologous recombination. IS 26 plays a vital role in the distribution of mobile resistance elements between different plasmids found in multidrug-resistant E. cloacae isolates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to improve prehistoric knowledge of paleo-typhoon and winter monsoon activity in the western North Pacific after 8 cal. ka BP. We examine two sediment cores derived from lakes located to the south and north of the Ilan Plain in northeastern Taiwan. Seasonal and typhoon rainfall data over the past several decades are collected for this study region. We also use mineral indicators, K/Rb ratios and grain size to estimate sediment sources, intensity of chemical weathering and rainfall intensity. The results show that the chemical weathering index (K/Rb ratio) of Meihua Lake indicates the continuing effects of autumn rainfall, while coarse grain sizes of Dahu Lake sediments suggest increased intensity in typhoon rainfall. Grain size results reveal that increasing El Niño-Southern Oscillation intensity in the tropical Pacific has intensified the activity of super typhoons in the western North Pacific. Finally, we find that frequent activity of super paleo-typhoons occurred in Taiwan during the La Niña-like state, and the strengthening winter monsoon activity and higher sea surface temperature enhanced plentiful autumn rainfall in El Niño-like state. After comparing our results with the paleo-typhoon data in Japan and south China, we suggest that the tracks of super typhoon are mainly affected by variations in the warm pool and subtropical Northwestern Pacific High in the western Pacific. In this work, Raman spectroscopic experiments are conducted on zeolites, including a total of 33 varieties and seven groups with different secondary structural frameworks, for which characteristic vibration modes are studied. Most of the zeolites show prominent Raman peaks in the spectral range between 200–1200 cm−1. Different groups of zeolites can be recognized by differences in the wavenumbers of the T-O-T (T = Si and Al, O = oxygen) modes in the range 379–538 cm−1, the M-O (M = metal,) modes in the range 250–360 cm−1 and the T-O bending modes in the range 530–575 cm−1. All zeolites show characteristic Raman peaks in the range 379–529 cm−1, except for natrolite group (fibrous) zeolites, which are characterized by T-O-T modes in the 433–447 cm−1 range and T-O bending modes in the 528–538 cm−1 range. The analcime group (with singly connected four-ring chains) zeolites show T-O-T modes in the 379–392 cm−1 and 475–497 cm−1 ranges. The gismondine group (with doubly connected four-ring chains) zeolites have T-O-T modes in the 391–432 cm−1 and 463–497 cm−1 ranges. The chabazite group (with a six-cyclic ring) zeolites are characterized by M-O modes in the 320–340 cm−1 range and T-O-T modes in the 477–509 cm−1 range. The Raman modes of mordenite group zeolites (397–410 cm−1 and 470–529 cm−1) overlap with those of heulandite group zeolites (402–416 cm−1 and 480–500 cm−1). Moreover, the mordenite group has a characteristic peak in the 502–529 cm−1 range, and an additional peak in the 800–965 cm−1 range. Another recognizable peak for the heulandite group is in the 612–620 cm−1 range. Serpentinites associated with metamafic and metaplagiogranitic rocks occur sporadically within metasedimentary schists in the Yuli belt. Such metaigneous rocks are considered to represent ophiolitic protoliths and some contain high-pressure (HP) metamorphic minerals or assemblages. However, the origin and metamorphism of these serpentinites have long been a mystery. This study systematically investigates the four major serpentinite-bearing exposures at the Fengtien, Wanjung, Tsunkuanshan, and Chinshuichi. The results reveal that the serpentinites are of two different protoliths on the basis of relict chromian spinel composition. Cr-spinel compositions of the Fengtien and Tsunkuanshan samples are characterised by moderate Cr# [Cr/(Cr + Al)] (0.45–0.57), relatively high Mg# [Mg/(Mg+Fe2+)] (0.59–0.79), but low Fe3+# [Fe3+/(Fe3++Cr+Al)] (0.02–0.06), reflecting an abyssal peridotite type protolith. By contrast, Cr-spinel compositions of the Wanjung and Chinshuichi samples show high Cr# (up to 0.74) and Fe3+# (0.03–0.08), but low Mg# (<0.6), indicating a forearc mantle peridotite origin. Peak metamorphic conditions of the serpentinites are represented by the assemblage of antigorite + magnetite + chlorite + olivine + diopside, which is estimated as up to 550°C but the pressure cannot be constrained quantitatively. Based on field relations, it is inferred that the serpentinites, associated HP metaigneous rocks, and garnet-bearing metasedimentary schists were metamorphosed isofacially. Despite two origins, the peridotitic protoliths were all subjected to hydration and subduction processes. We suggest that precursors of the serpentinites, metaigneous rocks, and metasedimentary schists were juxtaposed and metamorphosed at intermediate to great depths (~35–55 km) of a subduction zone. We investigated the ammonium removal abilities of natural and synthetic zeolites with distinct Si/Al ratios and various surface areas to study how adsorption and ion exchange processes in zeolites perform under different ammonium concentrations and different temperatures. Five zeolites—natural mordenite, chabazite, erionite, clinoptilolite, and synthetic merlinoite—were immersed in 20, 50, and 100 mg/kg ammonium solutions. The results demonstrate that zeolites under high ammonium concentrations (100 mg/kg) possess higher physical adsorption capacity (0.398–0.468 meq/g), whereas those under lower ammonium concentrations (20 mg/kg) possess greater ion exchange properties (64–99%). The ion exchange ability of zeolites is extremely dependent on the cation content of the zeolites, and the cation content is affected by the Si/Al ratio. The surface area of zeolites also has a partial influence on its physical adsorption ability. When the surface area is less than 100 m2/g, the adsorption ability of zeolite increases obviously with surface area; however, adsorption ability is saturated as the surface area becomes larger than this critical value of 100 m2/g. When we placed the zeolites in 50 mg/kg ammonium concentration at different temperatures (5–50 °C), we found that the zeolites exhibited the highest ammonium removal ability at 30 °C and the potassium release was enhanced at 30–40 °C. Lacustrine record of marine aerosol input has rarely been documented. Here, we present the sulfur geochemistry during the last deglaciation and early Holocene of a sediment core retrieved from the Dongyuan Lake in southern Taiwan. An unusually high sulfur peak accompanying pyrite presence is observed at 10.5 ka BP. Such high sulfur content in lacustrine record is unusual. The δ34S of sulfur varied from +9.5 to + 17.1‰ with two significant positive shifts at 10.5 and 9.4 ka BP. The sources of sulfur and potential processes involving the sulfur isotope variation including bacterial sulfate reduction, volcanic emissions, in-catchment sulfide oxidation and marine aerosol input are discussed. Enhanced marine aerosol input is the most likely explanation for such sulfur peaks and δ34S shifts. The positive δ34S shifts appeared concurrently with the maximum landslide events over Taiwan resulted from enhanced typhoon activities. The synchronicity among records suggests that increased typhoon activities promoted sea spray, and consequently enhanced the marine aerosol input with 34S-enriched sulfate. Our sulfur geochemistry data revealed sea spray history and marine influence onto terrestrial environment at coastal regions. Wider coverage of spatial-temporal lacustrine sulfur geochemistry record is needed to validate the applicability of sulfur proxy in paleoenvironmental research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of geothermometers derived from fluid solution compositions is a well-established practice for estimating geothermal reservoir temperatures. The most commonly used geothermometers in hot-spring environments are based on the solubility of SiO 2 , mineral equilibria involving the exchange of Na-K and K-Mg, and the empirically-derived Na-K-Ca geothermometer. The preferred geothermometer for a reservoir is determined based on the rock type of each specific reservoir. Geothermal reservoirs in the Chingshui Region of northeastern Taiwan are predominantly composed of slate. Therefore, this study examines water-rock interaction in a slate environment to determine the ideal geothermometer for estimating reservoir temperature in the Chingshui Region. Water-rock interaction experiments between 100 °C to 300 °C were conducted at various durations with the longest being 60 days. The traditional experiment of a closed system was modified into a two-step system by separating solid and reacted liquid during cooling. Comparison with the major elemental geothermometers and agreement with downhole temperature measurements indicate that the silica geothermometer is the most useful in assessing subsurface temperatures in the Chingshui hot-springs region and in the slate environment. Dust plays an important role in climate changes as it can alter atmospheric circulation, and global biogeochemical and hydrologic cycling. Many studies have investigated the relationship between dust and temperature in an attempt to predict whether global warming in coming decades to centuries can result in a less or more dusty future. However, dust and temperature changes have rarely been simultaneously reconstructed in the same record. Here we present a 1600-yr-long quantitative record of temperature and dust activity inferred simultaneously from varved Kusai Lake sediments in the northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, NW China. At decadal time scale, our temperature reconstructions are generally in agreement with tree-ring records from Karakorum of Pakistan, and temperature reconstructions of China and North Hemisphere based on compilations of proxy records. A less or more dusty future depends on temperature variations in the Northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, i.e. weak and strong dust activities at centennial time scales are well correlated with low and high June-July-August temperature (average JJA temperature), respectively. This correlation means that stronger summer and winter monsoon should occur at the same times in the northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.
