Abstract

We provide the first assessment for a coral reef fish population of a potentially threatened endemic species from a remote and isolated oceanic island. Based on a 3-dimensional (3D) numerical field model of the reef habitat and underwater visual censuses conducted by 2 different teams in February and May 2016, we show that the 3.7 km2 of the Clipperton Atoll reefs shallower than 30 m host >50000 ind. (average density of 0.02 ind. m-2) of the endemic Clipperton angelfish Holacanthus limbaughi. Based on limited submersible observations to 150 m, the population likely extends below the 30 m depth stratum, resulting in an even larger population size and providing a potential depth refuge against expected warming ocean temperatures.

Abstract

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), multiple myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia are possibly related to environmental and/or occupational exposure. The primary objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire for screening patients with these blood disorders who might benefit from a specialized consultation for possible recognition of the disease as an occupational disease. The study included 205 subjects (male gender, 67.3%, mean age, 60 years, NHL, 78.5%). The questionnaire performed very satisfactorily in identifying the exposures most frequently retained by experts for their potential involvement in the occurrence of NHL. Its sensitivity and specificity in relation to the final expertise were 96% and 96% for trichloroethylene, 85% and 82% for benzene, 78% and 87% for solvents other than trichloroethylene and dichloromethane, 87% and 95% for pesticides, respectively. Overall, 15% of the subjects were invited to ask National Social Insurance for compensation as occupational disease. These declarations concerned exposure to pesticides (64%), solvents (trichloroethylene: 29%, benzene: 18%, other than chlorinated solvents: 18%) and sometimes multiple exposures. In conclusion, this questionnaire appears as a useful tool to identify NHL patients for a specialized consultation, in order to ask for compensation for occupational disease.

Abstract

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the Raman line shape of long-wavelength phonons with longitudinal optical (LO) symmetry from both sides of Zn[sub 1-x]Be[sub x]Se/GaAs (001) heterojunctions with special emphasis on samples with low Be content (x≤0.20). First the built-in p-type LO phonon-plasmon (LO-P) coupled mode at the near-interfacial substrate is used as a sensitive probe to investigate the interfacial quality. The corresponding hole gas is reinforced when the ZnBeSe layers are nominally p doped by nitrogen. This provides clear evidence for effective hole transfer across the junction, and thereby indicates a minimized density of interfacial defects. In the nitrogen-doped layers hole densities as high as 10[sup 17] cm[sup -3], in accordance with capacitance-voltage measurements, are directly inferred from clear weakening of the ZnSe-like LO mode due to LO-P coupling. Concerning the intrinsic properties of the alloys, we demonstrate that the asymmetric broadening of the ZnSe-like LO mode is determined by topological disorder only, and not by other possible mechanisms such as structural disorder, nonhomogeneity in the alloy composition, a distribution of tensile strain, or a Fano-type interference. This reveals a high structural quality that parallels the high interfacial quality. We also show that a spatial correlation model with Gaussian distribution applies to Zn[sub 1-x]Be[sub x]Se. Most of this study is supported by a quantitative treatment. We extend the phenomenological approach of Hon and Faust to equations of motion and polarization derived from the modified-random-element-isodisplacement model in order to achieve line shape analysis of the alloy-related LO and LO-P modes. Abstract

Introduction Today, a growing need exists for greater research into cancer survivorship, focusing on different spheres of the day-to-day life of diagnosed patients. This article describes the design and implementation of VICAN (VIe apres le CANcer), a national survey on French cancer survivors. Method and analysis The target population included patients aged 18–82, diagnosed with cancer between January and June 2010, and registered in one of the three main French Health Insurance Schemes. It was restricted to 12 tumour sites. Sampling was stratified using a non-proportional allocation, based on age at diagnosis (18–52 and 53–82) and tumour site. Data were collected from telephone interviews with patients 2 and 5 years after diagnosis, a medical survey completed by the physician who initiated cancer treatment, and information from the national medicoadministrative database on reimbursement data and hospital discharge records. First data collection, 2 years after diagnosis, occurred between March and December 2012. Second data collection, 5 years after diagnosis, will be conducted in 2015. Analyses will be conducted on various outcomes: quality of life, health status and psychosocial conditions, with a particular focus on the impact of cancer diagnosis on the labour market. The variety of measurements included in the survey will enable us to control a wide range of factors. Ethics and dissemination The methodology of the VICAN survey was approved by three national ethics commissions. Results of the study will be disseminated through national and international research conferences, and in articles published in international peer-reviewed journals.

In the light of hybrid functional density-functional theory calculations of the core-excited and core-ionized states, this paper discusses original N 1s x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge x-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) experimental data on the single-domain (vicinal) Si(001)- 2×1 surface saturated by NH3 at 300 K. The theoretical approach enables to discuss the vibrational shape of the N 1s XPS spectrum and quantifies the binding-energy splitting due to intrarow and inter-row hydrogen bondings between amine pairs. The observed N 1s NEXAFS peaks are interpreted through the analysis of the contour maps of the antibonding Kohn-Sham orbitals of the NH2 adsorbate and through the ? Kohn-Sham calculation of the transition energies, laying a theoretical basis for a discussion of the adsorbate spatial orientation. Finally, suggestions are given for future directions of research to get a further knowledge of a system that has potential applications as a template for molecular layer deposition and supramolecular assembly.

Abstract

A new insertion device beamline is now operational on straight section 8 at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source in France. The beamline and the experimental station were developed to optimize the study of the dynamics of electronic and magnetic properties of materials. Here we present the main technical characteristics of the installation and the general principles behind them. The source is composed of two APPLE II type insertion devices. The monochromator with plane gratings and spherical mirrors is working in the energy range 40–1500 eV. It is equipped with VLS, VGD gratings to allow the user optimization of flux or higher harmonics rejection. The observed resonance structures measured in gas phase enable us to determine the available energy resolution: a resolving power higher than 10000 is obtained at the Ar 2p, N 1s and Ne K-edges when using all the optical elements at full aperture. The total flux as a function of the measured photon energy and the characterization of the focal spot size complete the beamline characterization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on carbon contamination of soft X-ray beamlines. It mentions that carbon deposits in X-ray beamlines are know to absorb and scatter synchrotron radiation, which forbids efficient measurements. It notes that strong reflectivity losses are observed, wherein carbon absorptivity is small.
