Methods to control internal interfaces in lithium ion batteries often require sophisticated procedures to deposit coating layers or introduce interphases, which are typically difficult to apply. This particularly holds for protection from parasitic reactions at the current collector, which reflects an internal interface for the electrode composite material and the electrolyte. In this work, electrolyte formulations based on aliphatic cyclic nitriles, cyclopentane-1-carbonitrile and cyclohexane-1-carbonitrile, are introduced that allow for successful suppression of aluminum dissolution and control of internal interfaces under application-relevant conditions. Such nitrile-based electrolytes show higher intrinsic oxidative and thermal stabilities as well as similar capacity retentions in lithium nickel–manganese–cobalt oxide LiNi3/5Mn1/5Co1/5O2 (NMC622)||graphite based full cells compared to the state-of-the-art organic carbonate-based electrolytes, even when bis(trifluoro-methane)sulfonimide lithium salt is utilized. Moreover, the importance of relative permittivity, degree of ion dissociation, and viscosity of the applied electrolyte formulations for the protection of current collector interfaces is emphasized. In this work, we investigate the electrochemical and safety performance of the glyoxalic acyclic acetals, namely 1,1,2,2-tetramethoxyethane (TME) and 1,1,2,2 tetraethoxyethane (TEE) as substituted solvents for linear organic carbonates in propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolytes in LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2∣∣graphite cells. By means of conductivity measurements and under consideration of PC-intercalation suppression, an optimized electrolyte was formulated with excellent thermal properties and electrochemical performance. The optimized electrolyte shows excellent cycling performance at the level of established organic carbonate-based electrolyte consisted ethylene carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate and with lithium hexafluorophosphate as conducting salt with an extended operating cycling temperature window, good C-rate behavior and promising safety properties, clearly demonstrating the application potential of this new solvent class for lithium ion battery electrolytes. Further enhancement in the energy densities of rechargeable lithium batteries calls for novel cell chemistry with advanced electrode materials that are compatible with suitable electrolytes without compromising the overall performance and safety, especially when considering high‐voltage applications. Significant advancements in cell chemistry based on traditional organic carbonate‐based electrolytes may be successfully achieved by introducing fluorine into the salt, solvent/cosolvent, or functional additive structure. The combination of the benefits from different constituents enables optimization of the electrolyte and battery chemistry toward specific, targeted applications. This Review aims to highlight key research activities and technical developments of fluorine‐based materials for aprotic non‐aqueous solvent‐based electrolytes and their components along with the related ongoing scientific challenges and limitations. To unravel mechanistic details of the ion transport in liquid electrolytes, blends of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Pyr14TFSI), ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) with the conducting salts lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) and lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) were investigated as a function of the IL concentration. Electrochemical impedance, Pulsed Field Gradient Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (PFG NMR) and Raman spectroscopy supported by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations allowed the structural and dynamic correlations of the ion motions to be probed. Remarkably, we identified that though the individual correlations among different ion types exhibit a clear concentration dependence, their net effect is nearly constant throughout the entire concentration range, resulting in approximately equal transport and transference numbers, despite a monitored cross-over from carbonate-based lithium coordination to a TFSI-based ion coordination. In addition, though dynamical ion correlation could be found, the absolute values of the ionic conductivity are essentially determined by the overall viscosity of the electrolyte. The IL/carbonate blends with a Pyr14TFSI fraction of ∼10 wt% are found to be promising electrolyte solvents, with ionic conductivities and lithium ion transference numbers comparable to those of standard carbonate-based electrolytes while the thermal and electrochemical stabilities are considerably improved. Increasing the operation voltage of electrochemical energy storage devices is a viable measure to realize higher specific energies and energy densities. A sufficient oxidative stability of electrolytes is the predominant requirement for successful high voltage applicability. The common method to investigate oxidative stability of LIB electrolytes is related to determination of the electrochemical stability window (ESW), on e.g. Pt or LiMn2O4 electrodes. However, the transferability of the obtained results to practical systems is questionable for several reasons. In this work, we evaluated the validity of the potentiodynamic based ESW method by comparing the obtained data with the results of galvanostatic based techniques, applied on commercial positive electrodes. We demonstrated that the oxidative stabilities, determined by the two techniques, are in good accordance with each other. However, the investigation of electrolytes being incompatible to Li metal, renders conventional ESW measurements useless when metallic Li is used as counter – and reference electrode in the ESW setup. For this reason, we introduced an alternative setup based on Li4Ti5O12 full cells. On the example of a butyronitrile-based electrolyte, we finally demonstrated that this electrolyte is not only reductively but also oxidatively less stable than common LiPF6/organic carbonate based electrolytes. Increasing the upper cut-off voltage (UCV) enhances the specific energy of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), but is accompanied by higher capacity fade as a result of electrode cross-talk, i.e., transition metals (TM) dissolution from cathode and deposition on anode, finally triggering high surface area lithium (HSAL) formation due to locally enhanced resistance. Here, LiPF 6 , LiBF 4 , lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB), lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB), lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in carbonate-based solvents are investigated in LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM 622) || graphite pouch cells with 4.5 V UCV. Despite the lower oxidative stabilities of LiBF 4 and LiDFOB, thus enhanced HF formation, TM dissolution, and consequently electrode cross-talk, higher capacity retention is observed compared to the case of LiPF 6 electrolyte. Counterintuitively, it is not the TM deposit amount but rather the Li plating morphology that governs capacity fade, as these salts cause more uniform and compact lithium plating, i.e., lower surface area. In contrast, the dendritic HSAL with LiPF 6 has a higher surface area, and more parasitic reactions, thus active Li ("Li inventory") losses and capacity fade. The transport properties and the underlying coordination structure of a ternary electrolyte consisting of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), and 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) is studied over a wide concentration range, up to that of a Solvent-in-Salt (SiS) electrolyte. Among other advantages for next-generation battery applications, SiS electrolytes offer a high lithium transference number ( t Li ) of 0.73. We analyze the transport mechanism by electrophoretic NMR (eNMR), providing the mobilities ( μ i ) of all species. Intriguingly, in the SiS region, the mobility of the neutral species DME exceeds the cation mobility ( μ DME > μ Li ), suggesting a heterogeneous transport mechanism, where the Li + mobility is averaged over different species. Based on Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy and MD simulations, we derive a model for a concentration-dependent Li + coordination environment with a heterogeneous Li + coordination in the SiS region, where the 1 st coordination shell either consists of TFSI - and DOL only, or of DME, TFSI - , and DOL. Lithium ions partially coordinated by DME migrate faster in an electric field, in contrast to lithium ions solely coordinated by anions and DOL molecules, explaining the peculiarity of the rapidly migrating neutral DME molecules. Further, DME is identified as an exclusively bidentate ligand, while TFSI - and DOL act as bridging ligands coordinating different Li + ions. Thus, Li + coordination heterogeneity is the basis for Li + transport heterogeneity and for achieving very high Li + transference numbers. In addition, an effective dynamic decoupling of Li + and anions occurs with an Onsager coefficient σ +- ≈ 0. These results provide a deeper understanding of the very efficient lithium-ion transport in SiS electrolytes, with the potential to bring further improvements for battery applications.

The film-forming electrolyte additive/co-solvent fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) can play a crucial role in enabling high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Its beneficial impact on homogeneous and compact lithium (Li) deposition morphology leads to improved Coulombic efficiency (CE) of the resulting cell chemistry during galvanostatic cycling and consequently an extended cell lifetime. Herein, the impact of this promising additive/co-solvent on selected properties of LMBs is systematically investigated by utilizing an in-house developed lithium pretreatment method. The results reveal that as long as FEC is present in the organic carbonate-based electrolyte, a dense mosaic-like lithium morphology of Li deposits with a reduced polarization of only 20 mV combined with a prolonged cycle life is achieved. When the pretreated Li electrodes with an FEC-derived preformed SEI (pSEI) are galvanostatically cycled with the FEC-free electrolyte, the described benefits induced by the additive are not observable. These results underline that the favorable properties of the FEC-derived SEI are beneficial only if there is unreacted FEC in the electrolyte formulation left to constantly reform the interphase layer, which is especially important for anodes with high-volume changes and dynamic surfaces like lithium metal and lithiated silicon.

Electrolytes are considered crucial for the performance of batteries, and therefore indispensable for future energy storage research. This paper presents data that describes the effect of the electrolyte composition on the ionic conductivity. In particular, the data focuses on electrolytes composed of ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ). The mass ratio of EC to PC was varied, while keeping the mass ratio of (EC + PC) and EMC at fixed values of 3:7 and 1:1. The conducting salt concentration was also varied during the study. Conductivity data was obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at various temperatures. Based on the thus obtained temperature series, the activation energy for ionic conduction was determined during the analysis. The data is presented here in a machine-readable format and includes a Python package for analyzing temperature series of electrolyte conductivity according to the Arrhenius equation and EIS data. High-voltage electrodes based on, for example, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 0 4 (LNMO) active material require oxidative stability of inactive materials up to 4.95 V vs. Li|Li + . Referring to literature, they are frequently supposed to be unstable, though conclusions are still controversial and clearly depend on the used investigation method. For example, the galvanostatic method, as a common method in battery research, points to the opposite, thus to a stability of the inactive materials, which can be derived from, for example, the high decomposition plateau at 5.56 V vs. Li|Li + and stable performance of the LNMO charge/discharge cycling. This work aims to unravel this apparent contradiction of the galvanostatic method with the literature by a thorough investigation of possible trace oxidation reactions in cumulative manner, that is, over many charge/discharge cycles. Indeed, the cumulated irreversible specific capacity amounts to ≈10 mAh g -1 during the initial 50 charge/discharge cycles, which is determined by imitating extreme LNMO high-voltage conditions using electrodes solely consisting of inactive materials. This can explain the ambiguities in stability interpretations of the galvanostatic method and the literature, as the respective irreversible specific capacity is obviously too low for distinct detection in conventional galvanostatic approaches and can be only detected at extreme high-voltage conditions. In this regard, the technique of chronoamperometry is shown to be an effective and proper complementary tool for electrochemical stability research in a qualitative and quantitative manner., (© 2020 The Authors. Two selected and designed fluorinated cyclic phosphorus(III)-based compounds, namely 2-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropoxy)-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (PFPOEPi) and 2-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoro-propoxy)-4-(trifluormethyl)-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (PFPOEPi-1CF 3 ), were synthesized and comprehensively characterized for high voltage application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current cycling were conducted, followed by post mortem analysis of the NMC111 electrode surface via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To support and complement obtained experimental results, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed. Theoretical and experimental findings show that the considered phospholane molecule class enables high voltage LIB application by sacrificial decomposition on the cathode surface and involvement in the formation of a cathode electrode interphase (CEI) via polymerization reaction. In addition, obtained results point out that the introduction of the CF 3 group has a significant influence on the formation and dynamics of the CEI as well as on the overall cell performance, as the cell impedance as well as the thickness of the CEI is increased compared to the cells containing PFPOEPi, which results in a decreased cycling performance. This systematic approach allows researchers to understand the structure-reactivity relationship of the newly synthesized compounds and helps to further tailor the vital physicochemical properties of functional electrolyte additives relevant for high voltage LIB application.

State-of-the-art (SOTA) liquid electrolyte/polyolefin separator setups used in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) suffer from the hazard of leakage and high flammability. To address these issues, phosphonate, a flame-retarding moiety, is chemically bonded to a polymer matrix to fabricate a nonflammable gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). The obtained phosphonate-based polymer matrix as well as its corresponding GPE (gelled with flammable SOTA nonaqueous liquid electrolyte) shows remarkable flame resistivity. Unlike poly(vinylidene fluoride- co-hexafluoropropylene)-based GPEs, the phosphonate-based GPE does not react with lithiated graphite at high temperatures. Both features indicate that the phosphonate-based GPE is superior to SOTA GPEs in the aspect of safety performance. As the flame-retarding moiety is chemically bonding to the polymer, the parasitic reactions between the flame-retarding moiety and the electrodes are avoided. Consequently, LIB cells comprising phosphonate-based GPE show good capacity retention comparable to cells comprising SOTA GPEs. Compared with SOTA GPEs, phosphonate-based polymer-based GPEs show improved intrinsic safety performance and comparable cycle life. Therefore, phosphonate-based polymers exhibit high potential to be used as a new class of polymer matrix for GPE used in LIBs.

We studied dynamic and structural properties of two lithium conducting salts in the aprotic organic solvent adiponitrile by a combination of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, quantum chemical calculations, and experimental findings. The outcomes of our simulations reveal significant differences between both lithium salts, namely lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) at various concentrations, which can be mainly attributed to the solvation behavior of the individual anions. The increased tendency of ion complex formation for LiBF4 is reflected by lower values regarding the measured and computed effective ionic conductivities when compared to LiTFSI. All findings highlight the crucial importance of specific anion effects in combination with molecular details of solvation, and advocate the use of adiponitrile as a beneficial solvent in modern lithium ion battery technology with high voltage electrodes.

Li + -conducting solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) obtained from supramolecular self-assembly of trimethylated cyclodextrin (TMCD), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and lithium salt are investigated for application in lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The considered electrolytes comprise nanochannels for fast lithium-ion transport formed by CD threaded on PEO chains. It is demonstrated that tailored modification of CD beneficially influences the structure and transport properties of solid polymer electrolytes, thereby enabling their application in LMBs. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experimental data reveal that modification of CDs shifts the steady state between lithium ions inside and outside the channels, in this way improving the achievable ionic conductivity. Notably, the designed SPEs facilitated galvanostatic cycling in LMBs at fast charging and discharging rates for more than 200 cycles and high Coulombic efficiency.

Energy storage is considered a key technology for successful realization of renewable energies and electrification of the powertrain. This review discusses the lithium ion battery as the leading electrochemical storage technology, focusing on its main components, namely electrode(s) as active and electrolyte as inactive materials. State-of-the-art (SOTA) cathode and anode materials are reviewed, emphasizing viable approaches towards advancement of the overall performance and reliability of lithium ion batteries; however, existing challenges are not neglected. Liquid aprotic electrolytes for lithium ion batteries comprise a lithium ion conducting salt, a mixture of solvents and various additives. Due to its complexity and its role in a given cell chemistry, electrolyte, besides the cathode materials, is identified as most susceptible, as well as the most promising, component for further improvement of lithium ion batteries. The working principle of the most important commercial electrolyte additives is also discussed. With regard to new applications and new cell chemistries, e.g., operation at high temperature and high voltage, further improvements of both active and inactive materials are inevitable. In this regard, theoretical support by means of modeling, calculation and simulation approaches can be very helpful to ex ante pre-select and identify the aforementioned components suitable for a given cell chemistry as well as to understand degradation phenomena at the electrolyte/electrode interface. This overview highlights the advantages and limitations of SOTA lithium battery systems, aiming to encourage researchers to carry forward and strengthen the research towards advanced lithium ion batteries, tailored for specific applications.

Application of different electrolyte components as blends in nonaqueous electrolyte formulations represents a viable approach towards improving the overall performance and reliability of a lithium ion battery cell. By combining the advantages of different electrolyte constituents, cell chemistry can be optimized and tailored for a specific purpose. In this paper, the current progress on possibilities, advantages, as well as limitations of blended nonaqueous electrolyte formulations, including solvent, salt and additive blends is reviewed and discussed. Emphasis is set on the physicochemical, electrochemical, and safety aspects. In addition, the aim of this review is to provide perspective and possible strategy for further and future development of blended nonaqueous electrolytes with long life, high energy density, high power, and adequate safety at competitive manufacturing costs. The provided overview and perspective on blended nonaqueous electrolyte formulations should encourage researchers to proceed with further and deeper investigations in this promising field of advanced batteries.

Diverse LiPF 6 hydrolysis products evolve during lithium-ion battery cell operation at elevated operation temperatures and high operation voltages. However, their impact on the formation and stability of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces is not yet investigated and understood. In this work, literature-known hydrolysis products of LiPF 6 dimethyl fluorophosphate (DMFP) and diethyl fluorophosphate (DEFP) were synthesized and characterized. The use of DMFP and DEFP as electrolyte additive in 1 M LiPF 6 in EC:EMC (1:1, by wt) was investigated in LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 /Li half cells. When charged to a cutoff potential of 4.6 V vs Li/Li + , the additive containing cells showed improved cycling stability, increased Coulombic efficiencies, and prolonged shelf life. Furthermore, low amounts (1 wt % in this study) of the aforementioned additives did not show any negative effect on the cycling stability of graphite/Li half cells. DMFP and DEFP are susceptible to oxidation and contribute to the formation of an effective cathode/electrolyte interphase as confirmed by means of electrochemical stability window determination, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization of pristine and cycled electrodes, and they are supported by computational calculations.

Thanks to its high operating voltage, the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) spinel represents a promising next-generation cathode material candidate for Lithium ion batteries. However, LNMO-based full-cells with organic carbonate solvent electrolytes suffer from severe capacity fading issues, associated with electrolyte decomposition and concurrent degradative reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface, especially at elevated temperatures. As promising alternatives, two selected LiTFSI/pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) based electrolytes with inherent thermal stability were investigated in this work. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) profiles of the investigated LiTFSI/RTIL electrolytes display much higher oxidative stability compared to the state-of-the-art LiPF 6 /organic carbonate based electrolyte at elevated temperatures. Cycling performance of the LNMO/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) full-cells with LiTFSI/RTIL electrolytes reveals remarkable improvements with respect to capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate maintained pristine morphology and structure of LNMO particles after 50 cycles at 0.5C. The investigated LiTFSI/RTIL based electrolytes outperform the LiPF 6 /organic carbonate-based electrolyte in terms of cycling performance in LNMO/LTO full-cells at elevated temperatures.

To identify alternative single-solvent-based electrolytes for application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), adequate computational methods were applied to screen specified physicochemical and electrochemical properties of new cyanoester-based compounds. Out of 2747 possible target compounds, two promising candidates and two structurally equivalent components were chosen. A constructive selection process including evaluation of basic physicochemical properties as well assessing the compatibility towards graphitic anodes was initiated to identify the most promising candidates. With addition of a film-forming additive in a low concentration, the most promising candidate showed an adequate long-term cycling stability with LiNi1/3 Mn1/3 Co1/3 O2 [NMC(111)] in a full-cell setup using graphite as anode material. Lithium-cyclo-difluoromethane-1,1-bis(sulfonyl)imide (LiDMSI) was evaluated as an electrolyte additive in lithium-ion batteries for improved high voltage applications. Cycling the cathode at high potentials leads to the electrochemical oxidation of the salt to form a cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer on the cathode surface. With the addition of 2 wt% of LiDMSI to the 1 M LiPF6 in 1 : 1 (by wt) EC : DEC electrolyte, the capacity retention and the Coulombic efficiency in LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2/Li-half-cells as well as in LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2/graphite-full-cells were improved. The cycling results point out the less over-potential and resistance at the cathode/electrolyte interface. These improvements are studied by SEM, EIS and XPS techniques.
