With this volume - Conversations with TeMA - the Journal opens a new editorial line specifically dedicated to promoting and disseminating the discussion between worldwide researchers on specific issues concerning the contents, methods and timing of our work. This first experience is dedicated to a deepening, in an interview formula, on the future of spatial planning in Italy both from a regulatory and technical-disciplinary perspective, also concerning what is happening in other countries. In line with the aims we had set, we decided to involve, in this first phase, both colleagues working in Italian universities and those working in foreign universities and research centres. Public participation and bottom-up approach have spread across the field of heritage since last two decades. Theory and practice about heritage conservation note strengthening the local capacitiesoverrecognition and inclusion of local communities in the decision-making processas vital for more sustainable development. UNESCO proclaims theuniversal value of the Geo-mining Park in Sardinia in 1997. The institutionalisation by Regional Decree in 2006 gave onadministrative and legislative opportunities, but socio-economic crisis and neglecting of mining landscape still follows the decaying trend. The paper aims to examine the problematic issues of public participation in heritage conservation facing the case of Geo-mining Park in Sardinia. The paper highlights the importance of public participation in heritage conservation and the role of local communities in the decision-making process through the theoretical framework. Additionally, participation process as an integrated heritage conservation approach delineates the features that give a unique character and provide the sense of belonging that lies at the core of thecultural identity of the heritage site. Furthermore, the paper introduces Geo-mining Parkin Sardinia picturing the problematic issues about public participation rise in the foundation process, and that left the consequences until nowadays. An overview of theorganisational structure, principles of making-decision, the role and recognition of local communities and collaboration patterns pictured the contextual problems illustrating the current governing structure. The paper found that the complicated institutionalisation process of Sardinia case demonstrates top to down institutional efforts from the foundation process without responding the needs of the civic sector. Lack of an effective public participation mechanism and exclusion of the civicsector from making-decision process detached the people from the landscape and contributed to the loss of identity.Accordingly, to the identified problem issues, implications and recommendations about the participation process are made in conclusion.

Like many other rural regions in post-socialist countries, Negotinska krajina wine region faces serious decline in wine production and severe depopulation. In order to reverse these negative trends, strengthening local capacities, through development of social networks, exchange and transfer of knowledge, expertise and know-how, is recognised in planning theory and practice as vital for more sustainable development of rural regions. This paper presents a process of developing a complex and dynamic model of collaboration between local institutions, companies and communities from Negotinska krajina region and Serbian and Italian academic and scientific institutions, experts and companies, in order to achieve: a) Increased transfer of knowledge, experiences and practices of local representatives and wine growers from Negotinska krajina region and partners; b) Increased knowhow transfer among academic partners and practical knowledge transfer among local public, private and civic stakeholders and academic institutions from Serbia and Italy; c) Institutionalized inter sectorial collaboration and ‘city to city’ cooperation. Some of the partners in this collaboration are: University of Belgrade-Faculty of Architecture;..... International audience; “Know thy tourists” is a useful maxim for any smart local government official or destination manager responsible for tourism policies. For that, position tracking technologies developed in the last decade are a valuable addition to the traditional toolbox for data collection, as they offer the opportunity to gather a great amount of unprecedented information on tourists behaviour in space and time (Shoval and Isaacson2007; Shoval et al. 2014).Until recently the most common way to study tourists’ behaviours in time and space were various methods of diary (re)construction (Shoval et al. 2014). And also, even if methods for surveying and analysing spatio-temporal behaviour are, of course, becoming highly developed in transportation research and in social sciences in general, comparatively little attention was being paid to the spatial and temporal behaviour of tourists, and systematic studies taking advantage of the technological developments offered by thehigh precision position tracking are still relatively few (Shoval and Isaacson 2007; Shoval et al. 2014, De Cantis et al. 2016, Sacerdotti et al. 2011).

International audience; Do intersections affect the convenience, pleasantness and quality of walk across the city? The study investigates the effect of spatial and operational configuration of street junctions on walking. A method for analyzing and evaluating urban intersections from the point of view of pedestrians and its operative application in the town of Alghero (Italy) is presented. An ELECTRE TRI rating/classification procedure was used to classify intersectionsaccording to their level of impedance for walking. Since the proposed method is reasonable simple to implement and its results have proven to be easilycommunicable, we believe it can be a useful planning support tool for the development of transportation policies aimed at enhancing pedestrian mobility and a practicable support aid for decision makers interested in prioritize interventions in cities. Furthermore, the proposed evaluation procedure may be incorporated into other evaluation models of urbanwalkability, which frequently put minor attention on (when not entirely ignoring) the effects of intersections on the overall walkability of places.

International audience; We present preliminary results of a pilot empirical study designed to examine factors associated with pedestrians’ perception of walkability, i.e. the perception of the quality, comfort and pleasantness of streets, and their conductivity to walk. This empirical study contributes to the ongoing multidisciplinary effort to pin down factors, their relative importance and theirinteractions, relevant for pedestrians’ perception of walkability, that is to say, of the quality, comfort and pleasantness of streets, and their conductivity to walk. In attempt to describe and explain people’s propensity and decision to walk, their choices of pedestrian route and the qualitative perception thereof, scholars have examined a series of factors, related to individual characteristics (e.g. age, gender, income, etc.), mobility opportunities (e.g.availability of public transportation), trip types (purpose, frequency, available time, etc.), and features of the walking environment (Mateo-Babiano 2016). Our study focuses on this latter family of factors, related to the physical urban environment, and attempts to determine their correlation with the subjective, qualitative perception of the walking environment.

Walkability Explorer is a software tool for the evaluation of urban walkability which, we argue, is an important aspect of the quality of life in cities. Many conventional approaches to the assessment of quality of life measure the distribution, density and distances of different opportunities in space. But distance is not all there is. To reason in terms of urban capabilities of people we should also take into account the quality of pedestrian accessibility and of urban opportunities offered by the city. The software tool we present in this paper is an user-friendly implementation of such an evaluation approach to walkability. It includes several GIS and analysis features, and is interoperable with other standard GIS and data-analysis tools., Tema.
