Il saggio prende in esame le politiche e le pratiche attuate dalle grandi associazioni filantropiche ebraiche occidentali nei riguardi degli Ebrei dell'Europa dell'Est, con attenzione anche ai rapporti intecorsi fra di esse.

L'introduzione illustra il progetto di ricerca (PRIN 2009) che sta alla base di questo volume.

During 1938-1939, a large number of conversions of Jews to Catholicism took place in Trieste. It was not only Italian Jews who converted, but also many foreign Jewish refugees in transit through the Adriatic port on their way to the Americas. The research has been carried on the basis of the documentation conserved at the Archiepiscopal Curia of Trieste, and has made it possible to reconstruct many individual paths, thus enabling the reconstruction of the personal motivations for conversion; the reactions of the local Jewish community and those of the local Church. Durante il 1938-1939 si registrò a Trieste un grande numero di conversioni di ebrei al cattolicesimo. A convertirsi non furono soltanto gli ebrei italiani, ma molti ebrei stranieri in transito per il porto adriatico e diretti verso le Americhe. La ricerca sulla base della documentazione conservata presso la Curia Arcivescovile di Trieste, ha permesso di ricostruire molti percorsi individuali, consentendo così di ricostruire le motivazioni personali della conversione; le reazioni della locale Comunità ebraica e quelle della Chiesa locale.

Il contributo mira a riassumere i passaggi fondamentali della storia degli ebrei triestini dall'Editto di Tolleranza di Giuseppe II alla vigilia della I guerra mondiale. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al processo di emancipazione civile e politica e al successivo processo di integrazione nella società maggioritaria del portofranco Asburgico.

Il saggio prende in esame il percorso intellettuale di due scrittrici ebree dell'Alto Adriatico, Enrica Barzilai Gentilli e Carolina Coen Luzzatto durante il periodo della grande guerra. La ricerca si è focalizzata sulle modalità attraverso le quali le due scrittrici e giornaliste hanno affrontato la questione dell'identità nazionale in un'area di confine e come hanno conciliato il tutto con le proprie origine ebraiche. Particolare attenzione è stata rivolta all'antislavismo e all'anti-germanesimo che hanno caratterizzato la produzione letteraria e giornalistica di entrambe, mettendo in rilievo anche il contributo dato dalle donne alla "costruzione del nemico" negli anni del conflitto.

Il saggio prende in esame le reazioni del Board of Deputies of British Jews, l'organizzazione centrale delle comunità ebraiche inglesi, di fronte alla svolta razzista del fascismo italiano nel 1938. Attraverso l'archivio dell istituzione e grazie allo spoglio del Jewsih Chronicle, il maggiore periodico ebraico inglese, è stato possibile ricostruire le azioni e le strategie messe in campo a sostegno degli ebrei italiani, grazie anche all'opera di Cecil Roth, il noto storico inglese esperto di storia ebraica italiana.

Trieste può essere considerata fin dal tardo Ottocento, un “laboratorio di razzismo”, antislavo e antisemita. Questo catalogo raccoglie i materiali esposti nella mostra «Basta, qui siamo finiti!» 1938: le leggi razziste a Trieste e intende ricostruire, attraverso molta documentazione ancora inedita, la prassi persecutoria del razzismo fascista antisemita e le reazioni dei singoli ebrei e della società maggioritaria nei mesi convulsi tra la primavera del 1938 e i primi mesi del 1939. Fu il periodo in cui il regime fascista decise di iniziare a perseguitare i diritti dei cittadini italiani di religione e origine ebraica, e lo fece in modo particolarmente rigoroso a Trieste, come se il fascismo locale volesse smentire una volta per tutte la fama di città più «giudaizzata» del Regno, secondo le parole d’ordine della propaganda antisemita nazionale. From the late 19th century, Trieste can be considered a “laboratory of racism”, of both an anti-Slav and anti-Semitic kind. This catalog contains the materials of the exhibition " That’s it, we’re done here!" 1938: the racist laws in Trieste aims to reconstruct, using a great deal of in¬edited documentation, the practices of persecution adopted by the anti-Semitic racism, and the reactions of individual Jews and the majority society during the turbulent months from Spring 1938 to early 1939. This was the period during which the Fascist regime decided to begin persecuting the rights of Italian citizens of Jewish origins and faith, implementing this persecution par-ticularly rigorously in Trieste, as if the local Fascists wished to deny one and for all the city’s fame as the most “Judaized” city in the Kingdom, according to the slogans of the national anti- Semitic propaganda.

This chapter analyzes the reactions of the philanthropic associations of English (Anglo Jewish Association—AJS) and French (Alliance Israelite Universelle—AIU) Jewry to the Italian racial laws of 1938, considering the strategies adopted to help Jews persecuted in Fascist Italy, and illustrating the development of transnational networks that connected Italian Judaism with foreign Jewish bodies.

The article analyses Luigi Luzzatti's attitude toward Romanian antisemitism against the background of European antisemitism and nation-building. It describes Luzzatti's theory of tolerance as one of the most original of the period, which comprises expertise in economy, constitutional law, and religious issues. Luzzatti's was one of the first Jewish prime ministers of Europe, and his attention for the Jewish question was unparalleled and original, highly influential. This article provides a first attempt to present to a English readership the relevance of his political achievements and his untiring interest for oppressed religous minorities

This study, based on new archival sources, focuses on the fragmentation of the traditional Jewish collective identity after the emancipation of Italian Jews in 1848. It analyzes the Jewish participation in the First war of independence, taking into account the generational conflict among fathers and sons; the relationships among Jews and non-Jews; the important role of education for the development of the Communities. It focuses also on the following figures: students, belonging to the middle-upper middle class, intellectuals (especially journalists), but also women and rabbis.

This article stems from a key question: was Habsburg Trieste truly a cosmopolitan and tolerant city? Building upon the interpretative category of "port Jews", established by David Sorkin and Lois C. Dubin, this study examines the social, economic and political behaviour of the Triestine Jews in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries, and conducts a comparison with the other religious minorities present in the Adriatic port during this period: Greeks, Protestants, Serbians and Armenians. The picture which emerges allows for the proposition of a new interpretative model, that of the "port-merchant." The second part of the article focuses on the second half of the nineteenth-century, when the model of Trieste as a tolerant city was challenged by the nationalist fights between Italians and Slovenians, and by the political antisemitism. The city lost its capacity to include the 'Other', and was rapidly transformed into a genuine breeding-ground of Italian racism.
