Background: The occurrence of cataracts in rabbits is a common reason for consultation in veterinary ophthalmology., Case Description: A 6-year-old female Lop rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) was referred with a 3-month history of bilateral cataracts. The owner noted that the rabbit was frequently bumping into obstacles. Physical examination was unremarkable. Routine hemogram and biochemistry panel were within usual values, and Encephalitozoon cuniculi were not detected by serology. A complete ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral hypermature cataracts causing total blindness. Bilateral tonometry showed normal intraocular pressures. Electroretinography (ERG) under general anesthesia revealed strong photoreceptor responses for each eye, and ocular ultrasound was normal except for bilateral hypermature cataracts. Following ERG, during the same anesthesia session, conventional phacoemulsification followed by acrylic intraocular lens (IOL; +58D) implantation was performed uneventfully in both eyes. Follow-up examinations were carried out for 1 year. Except for immediate post-operative bilateral corneal ulcers that were quickly cured with medical treatment, no other post-operative complications were observed. The 1-year follow-up examination revealed centered IOLs without posterior capsular opacity, enabling the observation of normal fundus in both eyes. The owner confirmed the rabbit had normal autonomy and moved with accuracy, as observed during follow-up visits and on videos provided by the owner., Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first described case of successful bilateral phacoemulsification and bilateral intraocular lens implantation with prior electroretinographic evaluation of the retinal function in a pet rabbit with cataracts., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Background: The purpose of this pilot trial was to evaluate the efficacy and benefits of a preservative-free cross-linked sodium hyaluronate solution (Lacri + ® , MP Labo, France) in 19 privately-owned dogs with dry eye. The animals were administered 2 drops of the tested product in each affected eye, twice a day (BID) for 30 days. Improvement in the global ocular clinical score (sum of the individual scores for conjunctivitis, ocular discharge, eye irritation, and corneal opacity/pigmentation/vascularization, each rated from 0 to 3) was defined as the primary outcome. Besides an improvement in each individual ocular score, tear film quality (Tear Break Up Time, TBUT), dogs' and owners' quality of life (QoL), as well as an increase in tear production (Schirmer Tear Test-1, STT1), were considered secondary outcomes. These criteria were assessed on D0, D0 + 15 days, and D0 + 30 days. Finally, a qualitative evaluation of clinical improvement was requested from the owners on D0 + 2, + 15 & + 30 days and from the investigators during the follow-up., Results: The global clinical ocular score as well as the individual conjunctival and irritation scores improved significantly (p < 0.0001) during the pilot trial. The average reduction of the global score reached 30% on D0 + 15 days and 55% on D0 + 30 days compared to D0. Ocular discharge was significantly lower (p = 0.0002) on D0 + 30 days compared to baseline; however corneal opacity did not show any significant changes from D0 to the end of the follow-up period. The quantitative tear production was increased at D + 30 (p < 0.0001), with a significant improvement as soon as 2 weeks in, with around 30% and 60% of dogs presenting an STT1 value above 10 on D0 + 15 days and on D0 + 30 days, respectively. The QoL score was significantly improved compared to D0 at all time points (p < 0.0001). After 2 days of treatment, 39% of the owners rated the efficacy as "good". The efficacy of the tested product was considered "Good" or "Very Good" by the investigators in 78% and 93% of the cases, on D0 + 15 days and D0 + 30 days, respectively. Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to review the clinical data and outcomes of patients that suffered ectopic cilium (EC)., Animals Studied: One hundred and twelve dogs from multiple private practices in France, with a clinical diagnosis of EC were included in the study., Results: The mean age of affected dogs was 2.3 years. There were 64 females and 48 males. The most represented breeds were the Shi Tzu, the French Bulldog, the English Bulldog and the Chihuahua. Eleven dogs were affected bilaterally. The upper eyelid was implicated in 93.5% of the cases, with the median portion being the most affected. No statistical difference was observed between the right and the left eye. EC were associated with distichiasis in 50% of the cases. Pigmentation of the conjunctiva at the point of exit of the EC was present in 58% of the cases. EC were short in 75% and long in 25% of the cases. Corneal complications were statistically associated with short EC. The corneal lesions associated with EC were keratitis (94%), corneal granuloma (0.8%), corneal fibrosis (2.7%), corneal degeneration (0.8%), superficial corneal ulcer (68.7%), deep corneal ulcer (8%) and perforating corneal ulcer (0.8%). The surgeries which consisted of the removal of the hair follicle was successful in 88.4% of the cases., Conclusion: EC is a rare condition which can be treated successfully by the removal of the hair follicles. Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to review the clinical data and outcomes of patients that suffered corneal epithelial inclusion cysts (CEIC). Animals studied Thirteen eyes from 12 dogs from multiple private practices in France and Belgium, with a strong clinical of CEIC were included in the study., Results: The mean age of affected dogs was 9 years. There were 9 females and 3 males. Two out of 12 dogs were Shih Tzus. Where identified, etiology was traumatic. Eleven dogs were affected unilaterally, 1 bilaterally. The cysts were single, bi-lobulated, or tri-lobulate, and cyst size ranged from 1 to 6 mm in diameter. Keratectomy alone was performed in seven cases, in conjunction with a conjunctival graft in three cases, a porcine small intestine mucosa graft in two cases, or an amniotic membrane graft in one case. Histopathologic findings were consistent in all eyes with a cyst located in the corneal stroma, composed of a nonkeratinized squamous epithelium delineating a lumen filled with neutrophils and desquamated epithelial cells. Surgery was curative in all cases but one, where the removal was incomplete and recurrence occurred several weeks after the surgery., Conclusion: Corneal epithelial inclusion cysts is a rare condition, secondary to corneal trauma, which can be treated successfully with conventional keratectomy alone or in conjunction with graft procedures., (© 2020 American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.)
