Background/Objectives: conducting fitness tests in educational settings can lead to advantages for both individuals and groups, beyond just enhancing fitness. With the aim of appropriately interpreting performance, this study was conducted to establish sex- and age-specific percentile normative data for a physical fitness (PF) protocol and to define a compound measure of physical performance. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a short, feasible, and easy-to-administer test battery was performed for 5106 school children, aged 6-10 years. Gender- and age-specific percentiles for the PF tests were constructed, and a Physical Fitness-Motor Competence Performance Index (PF-MC PI) was calculated according to the percentiles. Results: Boys scored higher in all the PF tests when compared to girls ( p < 0.001). There was also a trend towards increased PF levels as the age increased in both genders ( p < 0.0001). Correlations between scores on individual test items were moderate to high (r from 0.549 to 0.700), and all individual test item scores significantly correlated with the PF-MC PI ( p < 0.0001). Conclusions: the provided percentile values will enable the correct interpretation and monitoring of the fitness status of children and the PF-MC PI can be used for easily rating children's health-related fitness qualities.

Background: Perceived school self-efficacy (SE) is an important variable in students' activities as it affects their motivation and learning. Further, self-efficacy might represent a good predictor of performance, persistence and perseverance. Motor skills and other physical health determinants are extensively debated and linked to cognitive function in children of developmental age. However, inconclusive evidence supports a definitive relationship between perceived school SE and motor skills among schoolchildren. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 6-11-year-old schoolchildren to evaluate the extent by which perceived school SE and physical health determinants were related., Methods: A SE questionnaire and motor performance battery tests were administered to primary school pupils recruited from 154 sampled schools of northwest Italy. Perceived SE at school was assessed via 12 items from the Caprara's questionnaire. Motor performance scores were obtained from motor skill tests: 4 × 10 m shuttle run test, SRT; standing broad jump, SBJ; six-minute walking test, 6MWT., Results: A total of 3,962 children ( M = 2,019; F = 1943) were studied and 68% were normal weight. Overall, a 58% of the sample perceived a high SE, while, as to gender differences, a greater percentage of females perceived high levels of school SE with respect to any other level (χ 2 = 38.93, p < 0.0001). Results from multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that: (i) females perceived higher SE compared to males; (ii) children who performed better in SRT and 6MWT showed higher levels of perceived school SE; (iii) no significant effect was registered for the body weight. The 6-minute walking test (6MWT) is a simple assessment tool to evaluate exercise capacity. The result of the test is the distance that a subject can walk at a constant and normal pace within 6 minutes (6MWD) and reflects the aerobic/fitness performance related to walking function. Use of 6MWT has been relevant to assess exercise tolerance either in healthy children or in patients with, heart, lung and metabolic diseases. Our aim was to find 6MWT reference values in healthy Italian children. The 6MWT was performed in 5614 children aged 6-11 years recruited from primary Italian schools. Age related reference percentiles of the covered distance were gender-modeled. A linear and quadratic regression model was used to predict 6MWT performance. Males walked longer distances than females, respectively 598.8±83.9 m vs 592.1±77.6 m (p = 0.0016). According to the regression analysis, 6MWD was positively related to age, gender and height, while it was negatively related to body weight [(6MWD = -160.16 + 93.35× age (years) -4.05× age2 (years) +7.34× gender (m) +2.12× weight (kg) -2.50× height (cm)]. Reference values were established for the 6MWT in healthy children. The age related 6MWD percentiles provided a useful tool in the assessment of capacity in 6-11 year children, in fact they may be helpful to evaluate the effect of a given treatment or rehabilitation program and represent a feasible measure as to prevention within the primary school context. It was found a substantial difference from other countries for 6mwd values. In our study, factors such as age, weight and height were relevant for the prediction of 6MWD, similarly to other studies. The goal of this study was to investigate the differences in physical fitness in relation to urban or rural living environment and between two countries: Italy and Croatia. Over 14,000 students were tested during physical education (PE) lessons. Croatian students were taller and heavier than Italian students, with women achieving better results in flexibility. Urban students were fitter in abdominal strength than rural students. Age seemed to be the major factor influencing the performance. This study's results indicate a trend: urban students performed "indoor" tests better than rural students; the opposite may be true for rural students. Living environment, socio-economic-status, or cultural correlation differences could be decreased during school experiences. Thus, PE programs could train all people toward an adequate, age-based fitness level.

Information and communication technology (ICT) and mechatronics play a basic role in medical robotics and computer-aided therapy. In the last three decades, in fact, ICT technology has strongly entered the health-care field, bringing in new techniques to support therapy and rehabilitation. In this frame, medical robotics is an expansion of the service and professional robotics as well as other technologies, as surgical navigation has been introduced especially in minimally invasive surgery. Localization systems also provide treatments in radiotherapy and radiosurgery with high precision. Virtual or augmented reality plays a role for both surgical training and planning and for safe rehabilitation in the first stage of the recovery from neurological diseases. Also, in the chronic phase of motor diseases, robotics helps with special assistive devices and prostheses. Although, in the past, the actual need and advantage of navigation, localization, and robotics in surgery and therapy has been in doubt, today, the availability of better hardware (e.g., microrobots) and more sophisticated algorithms(e.g., machine learning and other cognitive approaches)has largely increased the field of applications of these technologies,making it more likely that, in the near future, their presence will be dramatically increased, taking advantage of the generational change of the end users and the increasing request of quality in health-care delivery and management.

Objective: To evaluate stent-induced artifacts by 64-row multidetector computed tomography (MDCT)., Methods: We studied 26 stented patients with MDCT before conventional coronary angiography (CCA). The CT values were measured. Stents were classified as occluded, with significant stenosis, with nonsignificant stenosis, or patent. For the patent stents, mean in-stent and out-stent CT values were compared; stents 3 mm or smaller were compared with stents larger than 3 mm. Multidetector CT was compared with CCA., Results: We analyzed 42 stents. At CCA, 34 stents were patent, 5 were nonsignificantly stenosed, 1 was significantly stenosed, and 2 were occluded. At MDCT, 33 of 34 patent stents, 2 occluded stents, and 1 stent with significant stenosis were correctly diagnosed; nonsignificant stenoses were undetected, 1 patent stent was misdiagnosed as occluded (κ = 0.727). The out-stent CT value was lower than in-stent CT value both in stents 3 mm or smaller (P = 0.001) and stents larger than 3 mm (P < 0.001). The in-stent CT value of stents 3 mm or smaller was higher (P = 0.011) than that of stents larger than 3 mm., Conclusions: Metal artifacts cause overlooking of nonsignificant stenosis.

Introduction: Coronary artery aneurysm is an uncommon disease. It is defined as a coronary artery dilatation, exceeding the diameter of the normal adjacent segment or the diameter of the patient's largest coronary vessel by 1.5 to 2 times. Coronary artery aneurysms are typically diagnosed by coronary angiography. The prognosis of coronary artery aneurysm is not well known and the management is challenging., Case Presentation: A 68-year-old Italian-Caucasian man presented to our hospital with angina. Coronary angiography revealed a large coronary aneurysm of the right coronary artery, which was successfully treated by the percutaneous implantation of an MGuardTM stent., Conclusion: This case report provides evidence that coronary artery aneurysms, even if very large, can be safely treated by MGuardTM stent implantation. We strongly emphasize the high flexibility and good deliverability of this device, which leads to the complete exclusion of the aneurysm mediated by the process of endothelization of its thin mesh sleeves.

Furthermore, some findings such as evidence of right ventricular epicardial fat once considered a peculiar marker of ARVC, have been shown to possess a low specificity. This document was prepared by representatives of the three Italian official Organizations involved in CMR. Its main scope is to highlight the problems encountered when studying patients with suspected ARVC by CMR, to indicate the basic technical equipment needed, to recommend a proper imaging protocol and to offer a consensus on the main diagnostic features relevant for the diagnosis.

Acute intramural aortic hematoma may result from ruptured vasa vasorum without intimal disruption (IMH hereafter) but can also be found in association with processes in which an intimal lesion is present, such as aortic dissections (AD), where the hematoma represents the acute thrombosis of the false lumen, or in penetrating atherosclerotic ulcers (PAU), where blood collects beyond the disrupted internal elastic lamina. As the clinical presentation of these conditions is very similar, imaging techniques should aim both to diagnose the hematoma and to characterize the underlying pathology. This review critically analyzes the diagnostic potential of several imaging methods based on personal experience and literature reports. Although intramural hematoma can be easily diagnosed unrespective of the tomographic imaging modality, it is usually difficult to distinguish between IMH and hematomas associated either to AD or to PAU. Indeed, only PAU related hematomas can be consistently diagnosed due to the high probability of unveiling the causative wall ulceration; conversely, the differential diagnosis between IMH and AD - associated hematomas is still matter of controversy. According to the literature, the two conditions cannot be differentiated by transesophageal echocardiography, though some reports state that a distinction might be made by MR imaging. As regards CT, only a small percentage of AD - associated hematomas exhibit clear evidence of a typical intimal flap, allowing for a safe diagnosis to be made: often, unfortunately, the intimal lesion subsequently found at surgery cannot be detected, yielding a picture of IMH. Therefore, the radiological report should give the same diagnostic probability to both conditions.

The paper describes a detailed model of an electro-goniometer based on a elastic beam connecting two 'bases' whose relative orientation should be measured. This kind of device, which has been developed for the analysis of human motion, is also suitable for different applications even when one or more rotations around moving axes occur. After a theoretical analysis of the device working principles, experimental verifications of the model are presented. The paper analyses the characteristics of the device and shows how the goniometer outputs can be converted into more familiar angular conventions avoiding cross-talk and other artifacts.

The prothrombotic effects of nonionic contrast media (NICM) have been evaluated in both biological and clinical studies. The question of whether there is a higher risk of thromboembolism during angiography with NICM than with ionic contrast media (ICM) has not yet been answered, nor has the precise role of the angiographic procedure per se in such complications been determined. The present study was performed to compare in vivo the potential prothrombotic effects during cardiac angiography of an NICM with those of an ICM, to estimate the effects of the procedure per se, and to assess how long these effects might be maintained. We measured blood levels of three markers of activation of blood coagulation: thrombin-antithrombin III (TAT) complexes, prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2), and the split product of fibrin, D-dimer, before and after coronary angiography in three groups of patients. In group 1, 14 patients underwent coronary angiography with the NICM iopamidol 370. In group 2, 10 patients underwent coronary angiography with the ICM ioxaglate. In group 3, 10 patients were evaluated immediately after cardiac catheterization, before the injection of contrast material, as controls. No statistically significant differences between the three groups were found in TAT, F1 + 2, or D-dimer levels at different times before and after coronary angiography. There was a trend toward a transient increase in TAT levels after coronary angiography with iopamidol, which at first suggested a possible brief activation of hemostasis with this NICM, but a similar trend was also seen in the control group. We hypothesize that not only the type of contrast material, but also the angiographic procedure per se and patient-related factors all play roles in determining a prothrombotic state during coronary angiography.

The authors present a preliminary study on the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures with a reinforced 95 degrees blade-plate, devised and used at the II Orthopedic Dept. of the University of Milan, in cooperation with the Milan Polytechnic. They discuss the indications and clinical-radiographic findings of the first 14 cases operated on, with a mean follow up of two years.

Nine patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as part of the diagnostic evaluation for cardiac masses; eight of them had been preliminarily studied by 2D-echocardiography (US). MRI did not add to the US diagnostic information in patients affected by intracavitary masses. It represented the definitive diagnostic modality in two patients with intramural pathology: one with ventricular rhabdomyoma, the second with an echinococcyal cyst located within the left atrial wall. The complementary role of MRI to US in cardiac masses is discussed.

Since June 1981 until July 1983, 40 percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty procedures in 38 patients have been performed. Results in the whole series are as follows: stenosis crossed in 33 patients (83%); balloon inflation done in 31 (78%), not done in 2 due to clinical instability induced by crossing of the stenosis; successful dilatation obtained in 25 patients (63%); emergency bypass surgery in 6 patients (15%) with 2 perioperative myocardial infarctions; no deaths. The whole series can be subdivided in two groups by the following parameters: premedication by nitrates (A) or by verapamil (B); temporal concentration of the procedures: 1/month up to February 83 (A), 3.7/month thereafter (B). Results are different in the two groups: 21 attempts in 21 patients: stenosis crossed in 14 cases (67%), balloon inflated in 12 (57%), successful dilatation obtained in 8 patients (38%), emergency bypass in 5 patients (24%). 19 attempts in 17 patients (2 vessel angioplasty in 2 patients): stenosis crossed and balloon inflated in 19 (100%), successful dilatation in 17 cases (89%), uncomplicated emergency bypass in 1 patient (5%). On the basis of personal more recent results an optimistic attitude towards the percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is justified.

A software system for semiautomatic reporting and automatic filing of coronary angiographies has been developed and is suitable for an IBM Personal Computer (PC) with graphic tablet and printer. Coronary angiographic findings referring to the native anatomy, pathology, and post-surgical status can be easily recorded. The data is automatically coded and filed according to category of information. This system can analyze previously filed data and perform searches under one or more angiographic findings. This allows for a comparison of different series of patients.

Extrapancreatic fluid collections are a well-known complication of pancreatitis and may occur in unusual locations. Involvement of the left perirenal space is uncommon and has not yet been documented by computed tomography. One surgically proven case is described and pertinent radiologic findings are described.
