Abstract The trabecular meshwork (TM) is crucial for regulating intraocular pressure (IOP), and its dysfunction significantly contributes to glaucoma, a leading cause of vision loss and blindness worldwide. Although rodents are commonly used as animal models in glaucoma research, the applicability of these findings to humans is limited due to the insufficient understanding of murine TM. This study aimed to compare primary human TM (hTM) and murine TM (mTM) cells in vitro to enhance the robustness and translatability of murine glaucoma models. In this in vitro study, we compared primary hTM and mTM cells under simulated physiological and pathological conditions by exposing both cell types to the glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX) and Transforming Growth Factor β (TGFB2), both of which are critical in the pathogenesis of several ophthalmological diseases, including glaucoma. Phagocytic properties were assessed using microbeads. Cells were analyzed through immunocytochemistry (ICC) and Western blot (WB) to evaluate the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, such as Fibronectin 1 (FN1) and Collagen IV (COL IV). Filamentous-Actin (F-Act) staining was used to analyze cross-linked actin network (CLAN) formation. Additionally, we evaluated cytoskeletal components, including Vimentin (VIM), Myocilin (MYOC), and Actin-alpha-2 (ACTA2). Our results demonstrated significant similarities between human and murine TM cells in basic morphology, phagocytic properties, and ECM and cytoskeletal component expression under both homeostatic and pathological conditions in vitro. Both human and murine TM cells exhibited epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) after exposure to DEX or TGFB2, with comparable CLAN formation observed in both species. However, there were significant differences in FN1 and MYOC induction between human and murine TM cells. Additionally, MYOC expression in hTM cells depended on fibronectin coating. Our study suggests that murine glaucoma models are potentially translatable to human TM. The observed similarities in ECM and cytoskeletal component expression and the comparable EMT response and CLAN formation support the utility of murine models in glaucoma research. The differences in FN1 and MYOC expression between hTM and mTM warrant further investigation due to their potential impact on TM properties. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the species-specific characteristics of TM and highlights opportunities to refine murine models for better relevance to human glaucoma.

Background: Sjögren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by sicca symptoms and various extraglandular manifestations including vasculitis. Neurological involvement occurs frequently (Neuro-Sjögren) and often mimics immune neuropathies such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). Objectives: We aim to assess relevant differences in vessel density (VD) in Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) in those diseases to use it as an easily available diagnostic tool. Design: Prospective, monocentric pilot-study. Methods: OCTA (Heidelberg Engineering OCT SPECTRALIS) of the superficial vascular plexus, intermediate capillary plexus (ICP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) of the retina was prospectively performed in Neuro-Sjögren, age-matched CIDP patients ( n = 31, each), and healthy controls ( n = 30). Abstract Optic neuritis is often an initial symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) or clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), yet comprehensive studies using the 2017 McDonald criteria for MS are scarce. Patient records from our academic centre (2010–2018) were reviewed. Using the 2017 McDonald criteria, three groups were formed: MS optic neuritis (optic neuritis with confirmed MS), CIS optic neuritis (optic neuritis without confirmed MS) and suspected optic neuritis (sON). We compared clinical and paraclinical findings among the groups to identify predictors for CIS- or MS-optic neuritis. The study included 129 MS, 108 CIS, and 44 sON cases. The combination of visual impairment, dyschromatopsia, and retrobulbar pain was observed in 47% of MS patients, 42% of CIS patients, and 30% of sON patients. Dyschromatopsia was the strongest indicator of MS or CIS diagnosis in the backward regression model. 56% of MS patients had relative afferent pupillary defect, 61% optic nerve anomalies within magnetic resonance imaging, and 81% abnormal visual evoked potentials. Our results emphasize the challenges in diagnosing optic neuritis, as not all patients with objectively diagnosed MS exhibit the triad of typical symptoms. To address potentially missing clinical features, incorporating additional paraclinical findings is proposed.

Abstract Background The goal of this study was to evaluate macular microvascular changes in patients with Fabry disease (FD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to explore their correlation with laboratory and ocular findings. Methods A total of 76 eyes (38 patients) and 48 eyes of 24 healthy controls were enrolled in this prospective study. Vessel Area Density (VAD) and Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ) area were calculated on 2.9 × 2.9 mm OCTA images scanned with the Heidelberg Spectralis II (Heidelberg, Germany). VAD was measured in three layers: Superficial Vascular Plexus (SVP), Intermediate Capillary Plexus (ICP), and Deep Capillary Plexus (DCP). All scans were analyzed with the EA-Tool (Version 1.0), which was coded in MATLAB (The MathWorks Inc, R2017b). FAZ area was manually measured in full-thickness, SVP, ICP and DCP scans. Abstract Introduction In this work, we provide a detailed characterization of a rare complication—subconjunctival cyst formation after strabismus surgery—in a large German cohort. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of 822 consecutive patients who underwent strabismus surgery between 2015 and 2022. The patients received comprehensive eye and orthoptic examinations preoperatively, at 1 day, and at 3 months postoperatively. Cysts were analyzed with slit-lamp examination, anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), and histopathological subsumption. Results Nineteen cases of postoperative cysts were observed (2.3%), 12 of which underwent surgical revision. Clinical evaluation including slit-lamp and AS-OCT as well as histological analysis resulted in a classification of three types of cysts: type 1, which is a single hyporeflective cyst, type 2, which is a multilobular hyporeflective cyst, and type 3, a dense hyperreflective granulomatous-like cyst. Eta (η) correlation ratio analysis could show a correlation between time of clinical appearance and type of cyst (Eta = 0.63). Most cysts developed within 20 days after surgery. Not only did cysts more frequently affect the medial rectus muscle, which in most cases underwent a shortening procedure (11/19 tucks, 4/19 resections) for intermittent exotropia (X(T)), but the cyst also formed earlier than in the lateral rectus muscle (Eta = 0.45). No correlation could be shown between the type of surgical procedure and time of cyst occurrence (Eta = 0.1). Patient age and cyst type correlated strongly (Eta = 0.47). The underlying type of strabismus did not correlate with the type of cyst observed. Conclusions Our cases showed a strong positive correlation to the type of strabismus (X(T)), age (young patients), and the procedure (tuck/resection). We introduce a grading system for postoperative cysts after strabismus surgery, complementing histopathology and slit-lamp aspects with AS-OCT information.

Abstract Introduction Retinal microvasculature is known to be altered in patients with Fabry disease (FD). We aimed to investigate the long-term changes in macular microvasculature and explore a reliable retinal biomarker for treatment monitoring in FD. Methods Prospective study of 26 eyes with FD followed up to 48 months (mean 24, range 8–48). OCT angiography (OCTA) images (2.9 × 2.9 mm) were obtained using Heidelberg Spectralis II at baseline and follow-up. Macular vessel area density (VAD, %) was measured in three layers: superficial vascular plexus (SVP), intermediate capillary plexus (ICP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) in three peri-macular circular sectors (c1, c2, c3). Adeno-associated viral transduction allows the introduction of nucleic fragments into cells and is widely used to modulate gene expressions in vitro and in vivo. It enables the study of genetic functions and disease mechanisms and, more recently, serves as a tool for gene repair. To achieve optimal transduction performance for a given cell type, selecting an appropriate serotype and the number of virus particles per cell, also known as the multiplicity of infection, is critical. Fluorescent proteins are one of the common reporter genes to visualize successfully transduced cells and assess transduction efficiencies. Traditional methods of measuring fluorescence-positive cells are endpoint analysis by flow cytometry or manual counting with a fluorescence microscope. However, the flow cytometry analysis does not allow further measurement in a test run, and manual counting by microscopy is time-consuming. Here, we present a method that repeatedly evaluates transduction efficiencies by adding the DNA-stain Hoechst 33342 during the transduction process combined with a microscope or live-cell imager and microplate image analysis software. The method achieves fast, high-throughput, reproducible, and real-time post-transduction analysis and allows for optimizing transduction parameters and screening for a proper approach.

Abstract Background Selective Retina Therapy (SRT), a photodisruptive micropulsed laser modality that selectively destroys RPE cells followed by regeneration, and Thermal Stimulation of the Retina (TSR), a stimulative photothermal continuous wave laser modality that leads to an instant sublethal temperature increase in RPE cells, have shown therapeutic effects on Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in mice. We investigate the differences between both laser modalities concerning RPE regeneration. Methods For PCR array, 6 eyes of murine AMD models, apolipoprotein E and nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2- like 2 knock out mice respectively, were treated by neuroretina-sparing TSR or SRT. Untreated litter mates were controls. Eyes were enucleated either 1 or 7 days after laser treatment. For morphological analysis, porcine RPE/choroid organ cultures underwent the same laser treatment and were examined by calcein vitality staining 1 h and 1, 3 or 5 days after irradiation. Results TSR did not induce the expression of cell-mediators connected to cell death. SRT induced necrosis associated cytokines as well as inflammation 1 but not 7 days after treatment. Morphologically, 1 h after TSR, there was no cell damage. One and 3 days after TSR, dense chromatin and cell destruction of single cells was seen. Five days after TSR, there were signs of migration and proliferation. In contrast, 1 h after SRT a defined necrotic area within the laser spot was seen. This lesion was closed over days by migration and proliferation of adjacent cells. Conclusions SRT induces RPE cell death, followed by regeneration within a few days. It is accompanied by necrosis induced inflammation, RPE proliferation and migration. TSR does not induce immediate RPE cell death; however, migration and mitosis can be seen a few days after laser irradiation, not accompanied by necrosis-associated inflammation. Both might be a therapeutic option for the treatment of AMD.

Abstract Background Intravitreal injections are a mandatory treatment for macular edema due to nAMD, DME and RVO. These chronic diseases usually need chronic treatment using intravitreal injections with anti-VEGF agents. Thus, many trials were performed to define the best treatment interval using pro re nata regimes (PRN), fixed regimes or treat-and-extend regimes (TE). However, real-world studies reveal a high rate of losing patients within a 2-year interval of treatment observation causing worse results. In this study we analyzed retrospectively 2 years of real-world experience with an individualized treat-and-extend injection scheme. Methods Since 2015 our treatment scheme for intravitreal injections has been switched from PRN to TE. Out of 102 patients 59 completed a follow up time of 2 years. Every patient received visual acuity testing, SD-OCT and slit lamp examination prior to every injection. At each visit an injection was performed and the treatment interval was adjusted mainly on SD-OCT based morphologic changes by increasing or reducing in 2-week steps. Individual changes of the treatment protocol by face-to-face communication between physician and patient were possible. Results After 1 year of treatment visual acuity gain in nAMD was 7.4 ± 2.2 ETDRS letters (n = 34; injection frequency: 7.4 ± 0.4) respectively 6.1 ± 4.7 in DME (n = 9; injection frequency: 8.4 ± 1.1) and 9.7 ± 4.5 in RVO (n = 16; injection frequency: 7.6 ± 0.5). After 2 years of treatment results were as following: nAMD: visual acuity gain 6.9 ± 2.1 (injection frequency: 12.6 ± 0.7); DME: 11.1 ± 5.1 (injection frequency: 14.0 ± 1.0); RVO: 7.5 ± 5.0 (injection frequency: 11.2 ± 0.9). Planned treatment exit after 2 year was achieved in 29.4% of patients in nAMD (0% after 1 year); 0% in DME (0% after 1 year); and 31.3% in RVO (0% after 1 year). Patients’ persistence was 94.1% during the follow-up. Conclusion Using a consequent and individualized TE regime in daily practice may lead to a high patients’ persistence and visual acuity gains nearly comparable to those of large prospective clinical trials. Crucial factors are face-to-face communication with the patient as well as a stringent management regime. At this time TE may be the only instrument for proactive therapy which should therefore be regarded as a first-line tool in daily practice.

Objectives: Selective Retina Therapy (SRT) uses microbubble formation (MBF) to target retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells selectively while sparing the neural retina and the choroid. Intra- and inter-individual variations of RPE pigmentation makes frequent radiant exposure adaption necessary. Since selective RPE cell disintegration is ophthalmoscopically non-visible, MBF detection techniques are useful to control adequate radiant exposures. It was the purpose of this study to evaluate optoacoustically based MBF detection algorithms. Methods: Fifteen patients suffering from central serous chorioretinopathy and diabetic macula edema were treated with a SRT laser using a wavelength of 527 nm, a pulse duration of 1.7 µs and a pulse energy ramp (15 pulses, 100 Hz repetition rate). An ultrasonic transducer for MBF detection was embedded in a contact lens. RPE damage was verified with fluorescence angiography. Results: An algorithm to detect MBF as an indicator for RPE cell damage was evaluated. Overall, 4646 irradiations were used for algorithm optimization and testing. The tested algorithms were superior to a baseline model. A sensitivity/specificity pair of 0.96/1 was achieved. The few false algorithmic decisions were caused by unevaluable signals. Conclusions: The algorithm can be used for guidance or automatization of microbubble related treatments like SRT or selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).

This study evaluates the long-term effects of selective retina therapy (SRT) on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and neuroretina in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy. SRT was performed on 36 patients using a Nd:YLF-Laser at 527 nm (R:GEN®, Lutronic, Goyang-Si, Republic of Korea). A total of 994 titration spots were examined using up to three years’ multimodal imaging. Leakage in fluorescein angiography (FA) was observed after SRT in 523 lesions and resolved after one month. SRT lesions were not visible clinically, but appeared as brightly reflective areas in infrared and multicolor images. Normal morphology was observed in optical coherence tomography (OCT) immediately after SRT. After one month, thickening of the RPE and interdigitation zone changes were seen and disappeared after 539 ± 308 days. No RPE atrophies occurred during the observation period. Decreased fundus autofluorescence (FAF) was mostly observed directly after SRT followed by increased FAF at one month, which faded over time. A significant decrease in the number of visible lesions in the FA and FAF was observed within the three-year follow-up. OCT findings are consistent with animal studies showing SRT-related defect closure by hypertrophy and migration of neighboring cells without RPE atrophy or photoreceptor damage. This suggests that SRT is a safe treatment option for macular diseases and does not lead to retinal atrophy.

Purpose Transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB)-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of retinal fibrosis, which is one of the leading causes of impaired vision. Current approaches to treating retinal fibrosis focus, among other things, on inhibiting the TGFB signaling pathway. Transient expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) is one way to inhibit the TGFB pathway post-transcriptionally. Our previous study identified the miRNA miR-302d as a regulator of multiple TGFB-related genes in ARPE-19 cells. To further explore its effect on primary cells, the effect of miR-302d on TGFB-induced EMT in primary human retinal pigment epithelium (hRPE) was investigated in vitro. Methods hRPE cells were extracted from patients receiving enucleation. Transfection of hRPE cells with miR-302d was performed before or after TGFB1 stimulation. Live-cell imaging, immunocytochemistry staining, Western blot, and ELISA assays were utilized to identify the alterations of cellular morphology and EMT-related factors expressions in hRPE cells. Results hRPE cells underwent EMT by TGFB1 exposure. The transfection of miR-302d inhibited the transition with decreased production of mesenchymal markers and increased epithelial factors. Meanwhile, the phosphorylation of SMAD2 activated by TGFB1 was suppressed. Moreover, miR-302d expression promoted TGFB1-induced fibroblast-like hRPE cells to revert towards an epithelial stage. As confirmed by ELISA, miR-302d reduced TGFB receptor 2 (TGFBR2) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) levels 48 hours after transfection. Conclusions The protective effect of miR-302d might be a promising approach for ameliorating retinal fibrosis and neovascularization. MiR-302d suppresses TGFB-induced EMT in hRPE cells via downregulation of TGFBR2, even reversing the process. Furthermore, miR-302d reduces the constitutive secretion of VEGFA from hRPE cells.

Leber congenital amaurosis caused by mutations in the RPE65 gene belongs to the most severe early-onset hereditary childhood retinopathies naturally progressing to legal blindness. The novel gene therapy voretigene neparvovec is the first approved causative treatment option for this devastating eye disease and is specifically designed to treat RPE65-mediated retinal dystrophies. Herein, we present a follow-up of the youngest treated patients in Germany so far, including four pre-school children who received treatment with voretigene neparvovec at a single treatment center between January 2020 and May 2022. All patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy with circumferential peeling of the internal limiting membrane at the injection site and subretinal injection of voretigene neparvovec. Pre- and postoperative diagnostics included imaging (spectral domain optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, fundus wide-angle imaging), electrophysiologic examination (ERG), retinal light sensitivity measurements (FST) and visual acuity testing. Behavioral changes were assessed using a questionnaire and by observing the children’s vision-guided behavior in different levels of illumination. All children showed marked increase in vision-guided behavior shortly after therapy, as well as marked increase in visual acuity in the postoperative course up to full visual acuity in one child. Two eyes showed partial electrophysiological recovery of an ERG that was undetectable before treatment—a finding that has not been described in humans before.

Abstract Background The subconjunctival anesthesia with local anesthetics is considered as a low-risk procedure allowing ocular surgery without serious complications typical for retro- or parabulbar anesthesia, especially in patients with preexisting Optic Nerve damage. We report development of ipsilateral transient amaurosis accompanied with mydriasis and both, direct and consensual light response absence. Case presentation Three patients with advanced refractory glaucoma undergoing laser cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) for intraocular pressure lowering experienced these adverse effects just few minutes after subconjunctival injection of mepivacaine 2% solution (Scandicaine® 2%, without vasoconstrictor supplementation). The vision was completely recovered to usual values in up to 20 h after mepivacaine application. Extensive ophthalmological examination, including cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealed no further ocular abnormalities, especially no vascular constriction or thrombotic signs as well as no retinal detachment. The oculomotor function remained intact. The blockade of ipsilateral ciliary ganglion parasympathetic fibers by mepivacaine may be the responsible mechanism. Systemic pathways as drug-drug interactions seem to be unlikely involved. Importantly, all three patients tolerated the same procedure previously or at a later date without any complication. Overall, our thoroughly elaborated risk management could not determine the causative factor explaining the observed ocular complications just in the current occasion and not at other time points. Conclusions Doctors should be aware and patients should be informed about such rare complications after subconjunctival local anesthetics administration. Adequate risk management should insure patients’ safety.

Objective: We report the case of a young woman with postinfectious onset of myasthenia gravis after COVID-19 with mild respiratory symptoms and anosmia/ageusia 1 month before admission to our neurological department.Methods: Patient data were derived from medical records of Hannover Medical School, Germany. Written informed consent was obtained from the patient.Results: The 21-year-old female patient presented with subacute, vertically shifted double vision evoked by right sided partial oculomotor paresis and ptosis. About 4 weeks earlier she had suffered from mild respiratory symptoms, aching limbs and head without fever, accompanied by anosmia/ageusia. During the persistence of the latter symptoms for around 10 days the patient had already noticed “tired eyes” and fluctuating double vision. Clinical assessment including a positive test with edrophonium chloride and increased acetylcholine receptor antibodies related the ocular manifestation etiologically to myasthenia gravis. Antibodies (IgA/IgG) against SARS-CoV-2 using three different serological tests (Abbott, DiaSorin, Euroimmun) were detected in serum suggesting this specific coronavirus as previously infectious agent in our patient. The myasthenic syndrome was treated successfully with intravenous immunoglobulins and oral pyridostigmine.Conclusion: This is the first case presentation of postinfectious myasthenia gravis as neurological complication in a COVID-19 patient.

Patients suffering from type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk of developing classical microvascular complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy, which represent a significant health burden. Tight control of blood glucose, blood pressure, and serum cholesterol reduce the risk of microvascular complications but effective pharmacologically targeted treatment options for the treatment and prevention of diabetic microangiopathy are still lacking. Pharmacological inhibition of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) might have the potential to directly protect against microvascular complications and could represent a potential treatment option. Randomized controlled clinical proof of concept trials are needed to investigate a potential central role of SGLT2 inhibitors in the prevention of diabetic microangiopathy and its classical clinical complications of retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy.

AIM: To evaluate the association between the size of peripheral retinal non-perfusion and the number of intravitreal ranibizumab injections in patients with treatment-naive branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and macular edema. METHODS: A total of 53 patients with treatment-naive BRVO and macular edema were included. Each patient underwent a full ophthalmologic examination including optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging and ultra wide-field fluorescein angiography (UWFA). Monthly intravitreal ranibizumab injections were applied according to the recommendations of the German Ophthalmological Society. Two independent, masked graders quantified the areas of peripheral retinal non-perfusion. AbstractPurpose:Up to date several approaches have been undertaken to achieve an ‘easy-to-handle’ animal model of choroidal neovascularizations (CNVs) in rabbits; however, so far in none of the studies could healthy retinal tissue be maintained, which is mandatory to further investigate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) or anti-vascular-endothelial-growth-factor treatments. It was our aim to reevaluate and verify the method of inducing experimental CNVs in rabbits using subretinally injected linoleic acid hydroperoxide (LHP) as proposed by Tamai et al. and to use it for experimental PDT. Material and Methods:In 33 eyes of Chinchilla breed rabbits LHP of two different concentrations (25 and 100 μg/50 μl) was injected into the subretinal space via a transvitreal approach under guidance of an operation microscope. Ophthalmoscopic and angiographic examinations were performed on days 3, 7, 14 and 28 after surgery. Preliminary PDT with different experimental parameter sets was performed in 3 eyes using the new photosensitizer Tookad. Results:Using LHP in the higher concentration, an angiographically determined CNV induction was observed in 27 of all injection sites (n = 34) on days 14 and 28 revealing early well-demarcated and progressive leakage. No CNV was detected at the lower LHP concentration (60 injection sites). Subretinal CNV was verified histologically revealing vessel formation above the retinal pigment epithelium level. Herein, a significant damage to the outer retinal layers was always observed; however, the general structure of the choriocapillary layer was maintained. Tookad PDT was clinically able to completely stop leakage in 1 case and reduce leakage in 2 cases. Histologically the choriocapillary layer was occluded. Conclusion:Subretinal injection of LHP induces angiographically well-demarcated classic CNVs in rabbits; however, the CNV rate was low, and histology revealed severe damage of the outer retinal layers but not of the choriocapillary layer, which is important for studying PDT interactions. Preliminary experimental PDT could clinically stop or reduce leakage from angiographic CNV. Due to the small CNV rate and the significant collateral retinal tissue damage, this model seems to be only of partial suitability for investigating new treatment modalities in CNV.Copyright © 2008 S. Abstract Background  Post-translational protein modification by lipid peroxidation products or glycation is a feature of aging as well as pathologic processes in postmitotic cells at the ocular fundus exposed to an oxidative environment. The accumulation of modified proteins such as those found in lipofuscin and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) contribute greatly to the fundus auto-fluorescence. The distinct fluorescence spectra of lipofuscin and AGE enable their differentiation in multispectral fundus fluorescence imaging. Method  A dual-centre consecutive case series of 78 pseudo-phacic patients is reported. Digital colour fundus photographs as well as auto-fluorescence images were taken from 33 patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD), 13 patients with diabetic retinopathy (RD), or from 32 cases without pathologic findings (controls). Fluorescence was excited at 475–515 nm or 476–604 nm and recorded in the emission bands 530–675 nm or 675–715 nm, respectively. Fluorescence images excited at 475–515 nm were taken by a colour CCD-camera (colour-fluorescence imaging) enabling the separate recording of green and red fluorescence. The ratio of green versus red fluorescence was calculated within a representative region of each image. Results  The 530–675 nm auto-fluorescence in AMD patients was dominated by the red emission (green vs. red ratio, g/r = 0.861). In comparison, the fluorescence of the diabetics was green-shifted (g/r = 0.946; controls: g/r = 0.869). Atrophic areas (geographic atrophy, laser scars) showed massive hypo-fluorescence in both emission bands. Hyper-fluorescent drusen and exudates, unobtrusive in the colour fundus images as well as in the fluorescence images with emission >667 nm, showed an impressive green-shift in the colour-fluorescence image. Conclusions  Lipofuscin is the dominant fluorophore at long wavelengths (>675 nm or red channel of the colour fluorescence image). In the green spectral region, we found an additional emission of collagen and elastin (optic disc, sclera) as well as deposits in drusen and exudates. The green shift of the auto-fluorescence in RD may be a hint of increased AGE concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
