Background/purpose: This study aims at identifying differences in the level of critical thinking dispositions according to the sociodemographic (gender, age) and academic characteristics (study field) of undergraduate students in Portugal. Materials/methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive correlational study with a convenience random sample of 1017 students. Most of the participants were female (76.8%) and the average age of respondents was 21.8 ± 4.22. For data collection, we used the Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale (CTDS), consisting of 35 questions, validated for the Portuguese population. In the statistical analysis, we used the T-student, ANOVA and hierarchical multiple regression model. Results: The students showed an average positive disposition for critical thinking (the average score in the CTDS was 279.1 ± 27.1). The results demonstrated that gender, age and field of study influenced the dispositions for critical thinking. Older girls, attending courses in the field of Biomedicine were the ones with higher disposition to think critically. Conclusion: Female students generally show higher critical thinking scores dispositions regardless the study field.

This paper presents the results of an exploratory case study that examined a veteran secondary teacher's knowledge for teaching non-routine mathematical problem-solving with digital technologies. Data was collected through the observation of a veteran mathematics teacher, in real time, solving a mathematical problem with the digital tools of his choice. The descriptive model Mathematical Problem-Solving with Technology (MPST) was used to analyse the teacher's utterances and actions while solving a mathematical problem, with GeoGebra and a spreadsheet, and expressing his reasoning also with technology. Our findings reveal the complexity of expert problem-solving with technology, through regulation processes and several micro-cycles that mainly involve the processes integrate and explore. Mathematical problem solving with technology entails relevant mathematical knowledge as well as knowledge about the mathematical affordances of the digital tools available, and the ability to combine them to develop a conceptual model of the solution to the problem. Thus, the teacher's techno-mathematical fluency seems crucial to successfully solve the problem and express the reasoning with technology. Based on the findings, we discuss the teachers' knowledge for teaching mathematical problem-solving with technology as including a particular kind of proficiency, techno--mathematical fluency for solving-and-expressing problems with technology. The limitations of the study, further research topics and implications for professional development and teacher education programmes are discussed.

Abstract Femtosecond laser pulses enable the synthesis of light across the electromagnetic spectrum and provide access to ultrafast phenomena in physics, biology, and chemistry. Chip-integration of femtosecond technology could revolutionize applications such as point-of-care diagnostics, bio-medical imaging, portable chemical sensing, or autonomous navigation. However, current chip-integrated pulse sources lack the required peak power, and on-chip amplification of femtosecond pulses has been an unresolved challenge. Here, addressing this challenge, we report >50-fold amplification of 1 GHz-repetition-rate chirped femtosecond pulses in a CMOS-compatible photonic chip to 800 W peak power with 116 fs pulse duration. This power level is 2–3 orders of magnitude higher compared to those in previously demonstrated on-chip pulse sources and can provide the power needed to address key applications. To achieve this, detrimental nonlinear effects are mitigated through all-normal dispersion, large mode-area and rare-earth-doped gain waveguides. These results offer a pathway to chip-integrated femtosecond technology with peak power levels characteristic of table-top sources.

The European decarbonization goals and requirement for energy independence are mostly relying on intermittent renewable energy sources for electrification. A numerical model was developed to simulate the operation of a steam generator, allowing a study of the potential impacts of retrofitting existing coal-fired power plants to operate with biomass or coal–biomass mixtures on combustion parameters and CO2 emissions. The results obtained using the operational parameters of the Sines power plant indicate that a mixture of 25% coal and 75% pine sawdust allow operation at λ = 1.8, demonstrating that a small amount of coal allows operation near the coal combustion parameters (λ = 1.9). These conditions have the drawback of a reduction of 8.7% in adiabatic flame temperature but a significant reduction of 57.5% in CO2 emissions, considering the biomass as carbon-neutral.

Piperazines and diazepines are examples of nitrogen heterocycles present in many marketed drugs highlighting their importance in the discovery of novel bioactive compounds. However, their synthesis often faces challenges, including complex functionalization and lengthy reaction sequences. Multicomponent reactions, notably the Ugi reaction, have emerged as powerful tools to address these hurdles. Here, we have demonstrated the possibility of using the combination of arylglyoxals and carboxylic acids tethered to nonprotected deactivated amines as a powerful strategy for the synthesis of complex fused heterocycles. The limited nucleophilic character of the amino group of the anthranilic acid, indole-2-carboxylic acid, pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid or N-phenylglycine has allowed the use of these compounds in the Ugi reaction without triggering competitive reactions. The additional functional group present in the resulting Ugi adduct can be leveraged in different post-condensation strategies to easily generate multiple fused nitrogen heterocycles including benzodiazepinone and piperazinone cores.

Among the different polyoxometalate compounds, Keggin heteropolyacids have been extensively used as catalysts in several acid-catalyzed reactions, due to their strong strength of Bronsted acidity. These metal–oxygen clusters have a highly versatile structure that allows their conversion to derivatives, which are catalysts that are much more efficient than their precursors, with a greater catalytic activity in a plethora of reactions of industrial interest. Particularly, due to the inevitable exhaustion of fossil sources, reactions to valorize biomass have attracted significant attention, since it is a precious renewable raw material that can provide fine chemicals or fuels, minimizing our dependence on petroproducts. Biorefinery processes can produce platform molecules to achieve this goal. In this review, the recent advances achieved in the development of routes to converting biomass feedstocks to levulinic acid and furfural, which are valuable ingredients in biorefinery processes, using Keggin heteropolyacid catalysts were assessed.

Abstract Background The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division (CAMHD) has maintained a longstanding partnership with Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to enhance capacity and quality of community-based mental health services. The current study explored CAMHD’s history of SAMHSA system of care (SOC) awards and identified common themes, lessons learned, and recommendations for future funding. Methods Employing a two-phase qualitative approach, the study first conducted content analysis on seven final project reports, identifying themes and lessons learned based on SOC values and principles. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with 11 system leaders in grant projects and SOC award projects within the state. All data from project reports and interview transcripts were independently coded and analyzed using rapid qualitative analysis techniques. Results Content validation and interview coding unveiled two content themes, interagency collaboration and youth and family voice, as areas that required long-term and consistent efforts across multiple projects. In addition, two general process themes, connection and continuity, emerged as essential approaches to system improvement work. The first emphasizes the importance of fostering connections in family, community, and culture, as well as within workforce members and child-serving agencies. The second highlights the importance of nurturing continuity throughout the system, from interagency collaboration to individual treatment. Conclusions The study provides deeper understanding of system of care evaluations, offering guidance to enhance and innovate youth mental health systems. The findings suggest that aligning state policies with federal guidelines and implementing longer funding mechanisms may alleviate administrative burdens.

Abstract Background The selection of primer pairs in sequencing-based research can greatly influence the results, highlighting the need for a tool capable of analysing their performance in-silico prior to the sequencing process. We therefore propose PrimerEvalPy, a Python-based package designed to test the performance of any primer or primer pair against any sequencing database. The package calculates a coverage metric and returns the amplicon sequences found, along with information such as their average start and end positions. It also allows the analysis of coverage for different taxonomic levels. Results As a case study, PrimerEvalPy was used to test the most commonly used primers in the literature against two oral 16S rRNA gene databases containing bacteria and archaea. The results showed that the most commonly used primer pairs in the oral cavity did not match those with the highest coverage. The best performing primer pairs were found for the detection of oral bacteria and archaea. Conclusions This demonstrates the importance of a coverage analysis tool such as PrimerEvalPy to find the best primer pairs for specific niches. Objectives To examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on deprivation-related inequalities in hospitalisations for cardiovascular disease (CVD) conditions in Denmark and England between March 2018 and December 2021.Design Time-series studies in England and Denmark.Setting With the approval of National Health Service England, we used English primary care electronic health records, linked to secondary care and death registry data through the OpenSAFELY platform and nationwide Danish health registry data.Participants We included adults aged 18 and over without missing age, sex or deprivation information. On 1 March 2020, 16 234 700 people in England and 4 491 336 people in Denmark met the inclusion criteria.Primary outcome measures Hospital admissions with the primary reason for myocardial infarction (MI), ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, heart failure and venous thromboembolism (VTE).Results We saw deprivation gradients in monthly CVD hospitalisations in both countries, with differences more pronounced in Denmark. Based on pre-pandemic trends, in England, there were an estimated 2608 fewer admissions than expected for heart failure in the most deprived quintile during the pandemic compared with an estimated 979 fewer admissions in the least deprived quintile. For all other outcomes, there was little variation by deprivation quintile. In Denmark, there were an estimated 1013 fewer admissions than expected over the pandemic for MI in the most deprived quintile compared with 619 in the least deprived quintile. Similar trends were seen for stroke and VTE, though absolute numbers were smaller. Heart failure admissions were similar to pre-pandemic levels with little variation by deprivation quintile.Conclusions Overall, we did not find that the pandemic substantially worsened pre-existing deprivation-related differences in CVD hospitalisations, though there were exceptions in both countries.

Summary: Background: We aimed to compare the risk of incident depression, anxiety, non-fatal self-harm and completed suicide in survivors from a wide range of cancers versus cancer-free individuals. Methods: We used electronic health records from the United Kingdom Clinical Practice Research Datalink linked to cancer registry data, hospital admissions data and death records between 1998 and 2021. Adult survivors of the 20 most common cancers were matched (age, sex, general practice) 1:10 to cancer-free individuals. Cox regression models, adjusted for shared risk factors, were used to estimate associations between cancer survivorship and mental health outcomes. Findings: 853,177 adults with cancer diagnosed in 1998–2018 were matched to 8,106,643 cancer-free individuals. Survivors of all 20 cancer types under study had a higher risk of experiencing a new episode of anxiety and depression during follow-up compared with cancer-free individuals; there was also evidence of raised risks of non-fatal self-harm in 17/20 cancers and completed suicide in 8/20 cancers. Effect sizes were greatest in cancers with poorer 5-year survival: hazard ratios (HRs) for anxiety and depression of 1.1–1.2 were seen for malignant melanoma survivors, while HRs for both outcomes were >2.5 for lung and oesophageal cancer survivors. HRs were highest in the first year from cancer diagnosis, reducing over time since diagnosis. However, 5-year cancer survivors still experienced elevated risks of a subsequent new episode of anxiety or depression, in 18/20 cancers. Interpretation: Survivors of the 20 most common cancers were at increased risk of experiencing depression and anxiety, and these increased risks persisted in medium-to long-term cancer survivors. Substantially raised risks of non-fatal self-harm and completed suicide were also seen for several types of cancer. The risks of all mental health outcomes were generally higher in survivors of cancers with poorer prognosis. Our findings suggest a need for improved psychological support for all patients with cancer. Funding: Wellcome Trust.

The population of Hispanic older adults is growing along with the burden of chronic diseases. This cross-sectional study aims to assess the factors associated with frailty among community-dwelling Hispanic women aged ≥60 years ( n = 357) enrolled in the Panama Aging Research Initiative—Health Disparities study of cognitive-functional health of older persons in Panama. Cognitive function was assessed with a neuropsychological test battery. Depression was measured with the Geriatric Depression Scale. Frailty was defined using the Fried criteria and participants were classified as non-frail, pre-frail or frail. A subsample ( n = 281) provided fasting blood samples for quantification of protein biomarkers. Associations were examined using hierarchical multiple linear regressions. 59.4% and 9.0% of participants ( M = 69.2 years, SD = 6.3) were pre-frail and frail, respectively. Abstract Toxoplasma gondii is a coccidian protozoan of zoonotic importance that causes toxoplasmosis. Although the current treatments for toxoplasmosis may be associated with adverse effects and limited efficacy for different biological forms of the parasite, evidence suggests that alkaloid molecules such as harmaline and piperine exhibit antiparasitic effects against protozoa parasites. This investigation aimed to evaluate the in vitro effect of harmaline and piperine against T. gondii tachyzoites in infected Vero cell cultures. After 24 hours of host cell infection, the cultures were treated with harmaline or piperine (0.49 to 15.63 µg/mL). Negative and positive controls were RPMI/DMSO (0.1%) and sulfadiazine (200 µg/mL). Harmaline significantly reduced parasite multiplication by 20% compared to the negative control, while piperine decreased between 55.56% and 88.89% in a dose-dependent manner. According to an intracellular parasite proportion scale, it was observed that the Vero cells with low or moderate parasitic proliferation were more prevalent after the alkaloid treatment. The study demonstrated that the alkaloids had antiparasitic effects on T. gondii, with piperine being the most effective. Additional studies must be carried out to clarify other aspects of the action of the alkaloids on parasites.

Background Surface topography has been shown to influence cell behavior and direct stromal cell differentiation into distinct lineages. Whereas this phenomenon has been verified in two-dimensional cultures, there is an urgent need for a thorough investigation of topography’s role within a three-dimensional (3D) environment, as it better replicates the natural cellular environment. Methods A co-culture of Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (WJ-MSCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was encapsulated in a 3D system consisting of a permselective liquefied environment containing freely dispersed spherical microparticles (spheres) or nanogrooved microdiscs (microdiscs). Microdiscs presenting 358 ± 23 nm grooves and 944 ± 49 nm ridges were produced via nanoimprinting of spherical polycaprolactone microparticles between water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol counter molds of nanogrooved templates. Spheres and microdiscs were cultured in vitro with umbilical cord-derived cells in a basal or osteogenic medium within liquefied capsules for 21 days. Results WJ-MSCs and HUVECs were successfully encapsulated within liquefied capsules containing spheres and microdiscs, ensuring high cellular viability. Results show an enhanced osteogenic differentiation in microdiscs compared to spheres, even in basal medium, evidenced by alkaline phosphatase activity and osteopontin expression. Conclusions This work suggests that the topographical features present in microdiscs induce the osteogenic differentiation of adhered WJ-MSCs along the contact guidance, without additional differentiation factors. The developed 3D bioencapsulation system comprising topographical features might be suitable for bone tissue engineering approaches with minimum in vitro manipulation.

IntroductionDespite the effectiveness of exercise-based interventions on symptom management and disease progression, many people with Parkinson’s Disease (PwPD) do not exercise regularly. In line with the ubiquitous use of digital health technology, the MoveONParkinson digital solution was developed, comprising a Web Platform and a Mobile App with a Conversational Agent (CA). The interface features were designed based on the principles of Social Cognitive Theory with the goal of fostering behavior change in PwPD for sustained exercise participation and improved disease management.MethodsUsing a mixed methods approach, this study aimed to collect feedback, assess the acceptability of the Mobile App and the Web Platform, and evaluate the usability of the latter. Quantitative data, which included questionnaire responses and the System Usability Scale (SUS) scores, were analyzed using descriptive statistics, heatmaps, and correlation matrices. Qualitative data, comprising semi-structured and thinking-aloud interview transcripts, were subjected to an inductive thematic analysis. A total of 28 participants were involved in the study, comprising 20 physiotherapists (average age: 34.50 ± 10.4), and eight PwPD (average age: 65.75 ± 8.63; mean Hoehn & Yahr: 2.0 (± 0.76)).ResultsThree main themes emerged from the thematic analysis of the interviews, namely: Self-management (Theme 1), User Engagement (Theme 2), and Recommendations (Theme 3). The assessment of the Mobile App and the CA (mean score: 4.42/5.0 ± 0.79) suggests that PwPD were able to navigate this interface without notable difficulties. The mean SUS score of 79.50 (± 12.40%) with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 73.70 to 85.30, reveal good usability.DiscussionThese findings indicate a high level of acceptability of the MoveONParkinson digital solution, serving as a foundation for assessing its impact on exercise engagement and, subsequently, its influence on symptom management and quality of life of PwPD.

Background: Digital inclusion of older people is an important agenda for the future and well-being of the older population, as it represents a form of social inclusion with significant gains for healthy aging. The present study aimed to understand the experiences of Brazilian older adults who use smartphones and the implications in their daily lives. Method: A qualitative study was developed using a constructivist grounded approach. Older people (≥60 years) with prior access to a smartphone were invited to participate in the study. Participation took place through semi-structured, audio-recorded interviews. Data collection and analysis occurred simultaneously using a constant comparative approach. Data management and analysis used the Atlas.ti® software. Results: Overall, 37 older people participated, with an average age of 70.60 ± 6.95 years, predominantly female (n = 33), white (n = 25), married (n = 26) and retired (n = 27). The first sample group included 27 older people with family support and the second group included 10 older people without family support (who lived alone in their homes). A core category emerged from the data analysis—“Expanding the personal and social development of older adults through smartphone communication”—around which three main categories emerged: 1) The smartphone as “a window to the world”; 2) The problem of misinformation and fake news on virtual networks; 3) Technological paradoxes in the use of smartphones. Conclusions: The digital transition associated with smartphone use brings unimaginable benefits to older adults who adopt positive habits to improve their well-being and expand their social connections, following efforts proposed by the Decade of Healthy Aging. However, older adults still face disparities and experience a significant digital divide, which represents a major challenge. Barriers to access are further aggravated in developing countries. We hope this study contributes to public health policies on digital inclusion and healthy aging.
