The genus Hamadryas has a neotropical distribution. In 1983, the subspecies H. glauconome grisea from Mexico was recognized with subtle and subjective differences in color, size and distribution and limited to the northwest. Since then, there has been a debate about whether it is a different lineage from H. glauconome because adult-stage morphology studies have not found significant differences. This study aims to delimitate H. g. glauconome and H. g. grisea lineages with two sources of evidence: ecological and molecular—the former through ecological niche modeling using the accessible area for the species and estimating the minimum volume ellipsoid overlapping as a fundamental niche using occurrences databases. The molecular evidence is found through the methods of phylogenetic inference and the generalized mixed yule coalescent approach, using sequences of cytochrome oxidase I. Ecological and molecular evidence suggest that H. g. grisea is a different lineage from H. glauconome. Also, molecular evidence of a third lineage from the south of Texas needs further study. This study suggests that different evidence should be provided when morphology is not enough for delimiting species, especially in recently diverged species. Furthermore, the H. g. grisea cytochrome oxidase I sequence (658 bp) is published for the first time.

Abstract Myrmecophilous butterflies can establish complex symbiotic relationships with ants. A caterpillar wandering among the brood of the aggressive ponerine ant Neoponera villosa was found inside the core of a nest built in the myrmecophytic bromeliad Aechmea bracteata. This is the first caterpillar found living inside a ponerine ant nest. Its DNA barcode was sequenced, and an integrative approach was used to identify it as Pseudonymphidia agave, a poorly known member of the subtribe Pachythonina in the riodinid tribe Nymphidiini. The cuticle of the tank-like caterpillar lacks projections or tubercles and is covered dorsally by specialized flat setae that form an armor of small plates. Ant-organs potentially related to caterpillar-ant signaling, such as perforated cupola organs and tentacle nectary organs, are present. These morphological traits, together with evidence of social integration (direct contact with host brood, protective morphology, slow movement, no host aggressiveness), suggest that P. agave is a symbiotic, social parasite of N. villosa, preying on its host brood. However, several knowledge gaps remain, including oviposition site, dependence on bromeliad association, steps to colony integration, and larval diet through development. Carnivory has been reported in all known members of the subtribe Pachythonina (caterpillars prey on honeydew-producing hemipterans) suggesting a shift to myrmecophagy inside the ant nests as a possible evolutionary transition.

Initial reports of a clinical response in patients treated with the radioligand [177Lu]-PSMA-617 for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) are promising, despite known inter- and intrapatient heterogeneity. In metastatic CRPC, we examined the association of baseline immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) in a single lesion and responsiveness to [177Lu]-PSMA-617 therapy, measured as the PSMA maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax). Between 2015 and 2020, 19 patients with multiple metastases underwent single-lesion biopsy, [68Ga]-PSMA positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, and treatment with [177Lu]-PSMA-617. A monoclonal anti-PSMA antibody was used to semiquantitatively assess PSMA IHC in the biopsy specimen. Imaging evaluation of the biopsied single lesion and overall response was performed according to Positron Emission Tomography Response Criteria in Solid Tumors. The PSMA IHC histoscore correlated positively with pretreatment same-site PSMA SUVmax (rs = 0.6). Nine patients had imaging after three cycles of [177Lu]-PSMA-617 and were included in the lesion-specific analysis. Of these, five patients (55.6%) had an SUVmax response at the biopsy site, but three experienced overall progression. The histoscore was unable to predict the lesion-specific change in SUVmax (95% confidence interval [CI] −44.2 to 69.2) or PSA (95% CI−125.2 to 17.2). There was no correlation between single-lesion SUVmax and overall progression (rs = 0.1) on [68Ga]-PSMA PET imaging. Additional studies need to interrogate the clinical consequence of PSMA expression heterogeneity in metastases and the association with response to [177Lu]-PSMA-671. Patient summary: Treatment with a radioactive binding molecule called [177Lu]-PSMA-617 for men with prostate cancer resistant to castration (CRPC) is showing promise. We investigated the association between the presence of PSMA protein in metastatic lesions at biopsy and response to [177Lu]-PSMA-617 among men with metastatic CRPC. We found that assessment of PSMA presence at biopsy is not a reliable predictor of response to [177Lu]-PSMA-617. Additional studies are needed to better determine which CRPC metastatic sites will respond to this therapy.

Background: Childhood cancer is a “stressful experience” for parents in their role as caregivers. The aim of this study is to analyze the needs of a group of parents who have children diagnosed with cancer. The assessment looks at all areas of their daily life using a qualitative content analysis approach. Methods: This study uses open questions designed to investigate the main problems faced by the parents of children with cancer. All the answers were analyzed using MAXQDA 20 software. The study was conducted according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). Results: The content analysis of the answers from 13 mothers and 7 fathers is presented. The main themes as priority areas of need were: “informal social support”, “coping”, “stressors/imbalances” and “health problems”. Dissatisfaction with the support provided from the informal network was detected. Although the participants expressed active coping, they also exhibited helplessness, as well as concerns regarding possible sequelae and the impact of this situation on the family’s economic/work context. Conciliation problems were a source of stress. All this is consistent with the participants suffering from a variety of health issues. Conclusions: the results show the effect of childhood cancer on different aspects of family life. They provide essential information for designing psychosocial interventions.

The interest in the study of flourishing is due to the fact that it has been proven that it contributes to a good adjustment to the demands of the environment, relating to indicators of health and well-being. There are many researches that have tried to find out what dimensions make it up. The goal of this study is to validate the Spanish Version of The Flourishing Scale (FS), being the first time it is applied to Spanish parents of children with cancer. A total of 138 parents of children with cancer participated in a semi-structured interview. Through IBM SPSS and Winsteps descriptive analyzes and the internal consistency of the FS were calculated. Rasch analysis was used to study the dimensionality of the scale, the adjustment of each one of the items, the reliability values for the items and for the people, the validity of the construct, the functioning of the response categories, and the differential item functioning (DIF). The external construct validity of the FS was examined with associated measures. Results found that parents indicated a flourishing attitude (M = 3.85; sd = 0.63). We confirm that the FS maintains an adequate internal consistency and a unidimensional structure. We observed a good alignment between the question and the person's abilities as soon as a high reliability for the items. Although the sample is large enough to corroborate the difficulty hierarchy of the items, the construct validity could be improved by introducing items of moderate and high difficulty. On the other hand, the answer category 3 overlaps with the 2 and 4, so we propose possible solutions. Regarding a possible DIF, this exists in relation to “gender,” “level of education” and “by the situation with respect to treatment.” Finally, the convergent validity of the FS is demonstrated, there being a significant correlation with well-being, satisfaction with social support and coping. In general, the results show adequate psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the FS, so we recommend integrating it in psychosocial interventions aimed at parents of children with cancer, in order to provide them with resources to deal with the disease.

In the Yucatan Peninsula, the ponerine ant Neoponera villosa nests almost exclusively in tank bromeliads, Aechmea bracteata. In this study, we aimed to determine the factors influencing nest site selection during nest relocation which is regularly promoted by hurricanes in this area. Using ants with and without previous experience of Ae. bracteata, we tested their preference for refuges consisting of Ae. bracteata leaves over two other bromeliads, Ae. bromeliifolia and Ananas comosus. We further evaluated bromeliad-associated traits that could influence nest site selection (form and size). Workers with and without previous contact with Ae. bracteata significantly preferred this species over others, suggesting the existence of an innate attraction to this bromeliad. However, preference was not influenced by previous contact with Ae. bracteata. Workers easily discriminated between shelters of Ae. bracteata and A. comosus, but not those of the closely related Ae. bromeliifolia. In marked contrast, ants discriminated between similar sized Ae. bracteata and Ae. bromeliifolia plants, suggesting that chemical cues and plant structure play an important role. Size was also significant as they selected the largest plant when provided two dissimilar Ae. bracteata plants. Nest site selection by N. villosa workers seems to depend on innate preferences but familiarization with plant stimuli is not excluded.

Durante la década de los 90 del pasado siglo, toman relevancia en la educación universitaria española conceptos y visiones hasta entonces desconocidos: sistema de indicadores, evaluación de programas/títulos, aseguramiento de la calidad, homologación, acreditación...La escasa permeabilidad del sistema no posibilitó la impregnación de la cultura de la calidad en todos sus estratos o niveles y en todas las Unidades. La Declaración de Bolonia, en junio de 1999, fue el impulso decisivo para la construcción del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES) en España. Desde entonces se ha diseñado la moderna arquitectura normativa para mejorar su calidad docente investigadora y de gestión. La Ordenación de las Enseñanzas Universitarias Oficiales recoge la necesidad de establecer criterios que faciliten la evaluación, certificación y acreditación. El establecimiento de un Sistema de Garantía de Calidad (SGC) es de obligado cumplimiento para el proceso de Verificación y Acreditación de los Títulos. Iniciada la implantación de las enseñanzas correspondientes, los órganos de evaluación que la ley ha establecido, son los encargados de llevar a cabo el seguimiento partiendo del SGC adoptado y que orienta la futura acreditación de los títulos. Hoy por hoy, el protocolo de renovación de la acreditación de títulos está aún por dilucidar de manera definitiva.

Con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto del manejo sobre la diversidad, estructura y composición de la flora arbórea nativa en un paisaje montañoso neotropical, se estudiaron 2 ecomosaicos: selva mediana y su matriz agropecuaria. Se inventariaron 96 parcelas registrando 172 especies. Los ecomosaicos difieren en riqueza, abundancia de especies y estructura como resultado del manejo del paisaje. La composición de los remanentes de selva se muestra como extrema de los potreros. En la vegetación secundaria madura se encontró la mayor riqueza (92 especies), mientras que los potreros fueron más pobres en especies. La flora arbórea de selva está representada en un 66% dentro de la matriz, particularmente en la vegetación secundaria; 27 especies son características de las unidades de paisaje, la mayor parte son zoocoras y están asociadas a comunidades maduras. Se encontró que hay complementariedad entre los ecomosaicos, la cual está relacionada con el hecho de que los campesinos mantienen áreas de reserva de selva, tanto en un núcleo compacto como en fragmentos distribuidos a lo largo del paisaje. Sin embargo, las tendencias indican que el sistema de acahuales tiende a desaparecer, lo que homogeneizará la matriz y aumentará el contraste entre ecomosaicos, comprometiendo la regeneración de la selva y de las especies asociadas al mismo.In order to evaluate the effect of management on diversity, structure and composition of native arboreal flora in a mountainous Neotropical landscape, we studied 2 ecomosaics: montane rain forest, and the surrounding agricultural matrix. We inventoried 96 plots, registering 172 species. As a result of management, the ecomosaics differed in species richness and abundance as well as in vegetation structure, with forest remnants and pastures as the 2 extremes. Mature secondary vegetation had the most tree species (92), and pastures the fewest. Two thirds of forest tree species were also represented in the surrounding matrix, especially in fallows. Twenty-seven species were characteristic of particular landscape units. Most of these were zoochores associated with mature forest. The actual landscape management maintains a certain proportion of conserved habitats and dispersed forest remnants which enrich the agricultural matrix. However the tendency toward less fallow area and more pasture indicates a transition toward a more homogeneous agricultural matrix, less forest regrowth and greater contrast between forest and agricultural ecomosaics. This will increase the contrast between the ecomosaics and threaten the regeneration of mature forest and its associated species.

El uso de especies indicadoras para caracterizar unidades ecológicas específicas es de gran importancia en la biología de la conservación/restauración. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar desde una perspectiva multitaxonómica, las especies que caracterizan distintas unidades de un paisaje. Así, se diferenciaron dos ecomosaicos: bosque tropical lluvioso y matriz agropecuaria con cuatro unidades de paisaje cada uno. Se incluyeron cuatro grupos biológicos: aves (muy móviles), mariposas frugívoras diurnas (moderadamente móviles), gasterópodos terrestres (poco móviles) y árboles (sésiles). La eficiencia de muestreo en los ecomosaicos fue ≥86%. Se registraron 50 especies de moluscos, 74 de mariposas, 218 de aves y 172 de árboles, totalizando 514 especies. Mediante ordenamiento y agrupamiento, se diferenciaron tres tipos de hábitats: bosque tropical lluvioso, vegetación secundaria y potreros con árboles. Aplicando el método InVal (≥50%), se identificaron 107 especies indicadoras, de las cuales 45 fueron árboles, 38 aves, 14 mariposas y diez gasterópodos. De éstas, 35 especies de árboles, diez de aves, cuatro de mariposas y ocho de gasterópodos son indicadoras del bosque. Diez, veintiocho, diez y dos especies (de cada grupo respectivamente) caracterizaron a la matriz agropecuaria. En el bosque, los gasterópodos Carychium exiguum, Coelocentrum turris, Glyphyalinia aff. indentata y Helicina oweniana se correlacionaron significativamente (pEcological indicators of habitat and biodiversity in a Neotropical landscape: multitaxonomic perspective. The use of indicator species to characterize specific ecological areas is of high importance in conservation/ restoration biology. The objective of this study was to identify indicator species of diverse taxa that characterize different landscape units, and to better understand how management alters species composition. We identified two ecomosaics, tropical rain forest and the agricultural matrix, each one comprised of four landscape units. The taxonomic groups studied included birds (highly mobile), butterflies (moderately mobile), terrestrial gastropods (less mobile) and trees (sessile). Sampling efficiency for both ecomosaics was ≥86%. We found 50 mollusks, 74 butterflies, 218 birds and 172 tree species, for a total of 514 species. Using ordination and cluster analysis, we distinguished three habitat types in the landscape: tropical rainforest, secondary vegetation and pastures with scattered trees and live fences. The InVal (≥50%) method identified 107 indicator species, including 45 tree species, 38 birds, 14 butterflies and 10 gastropods. Of these, 35 trees, 10 birds, four butterflies and eight gastropods were forest indicators. Additionally, 10, 28, 10 and two species, respectively per group, were characteristic of the agricultural matrix. Fragmentation is the third cause of the biodiversity declination. Population genetic studies using Lepidoptera as the model species in the context of loss of habitat are scarce, particularly for tropical areas. We chose a widespread butterfly from Mexico as the model species to explore how changes of habitat characteristics (undisturbed forest, anthropogenic disturbances, and coastal areas), and climatic conditions affect genetic diversity and population structure. The Nymphalidae Eunica tatila is a common species in the Yucatan Peninsula considered to be a bio-indicator of undisturbed tropical forest, with migratory potential and a possible sex-biased dispersal. We genotyped 323 individuals collected in eight undisturbed areas, using four Inter Simple Sequence Repeats primers. Results show a high genetic diversity and no population structure. Temperature and shrub density present a positive and significant relationship with polymorphism values. Furthermore, our results show the positive effect of surrounding forest habitat on genetic diversity, confirming that E. tatila is a bio-indicator of undisturbed tropical forest. We found evidence of sex-biased dispersal. This paper represents one of the few studies on population genetics of tropical butterfly in a fragmented landscape and is, therefore, an important step in understanding the impact of habitat fragmentation on the risk of a butterflies’ decline.

Objetivos: a) Analizar los niveles de adherencia al tratamiento por parte de los trabajadores estudiados; b) determinar los factores relacionados con el incumplimiento terapéutico y, por ende, con la salud y el bienestar de los participantes en el estudio y c) sentar las bases para el diseño futuro de estrategias de intervención preventiva. Métodos: El estudio se llevó a cabo durante el año 2008 en el Servicio de Prevención de los Servicios Centrales del Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social. Para ello, se diseñó un cuestionario aplicado a cada paciente (trabajador) en el que se recogen, además de las variables sociodemográficas, el tipo de enfermedad, tipo de tratamiento, razones de incumplimiento, apoyo social, salud y bienestar subjetivo. Resultados: Los análisis muestran que la adherencia a la medicación se da en mayor medida que la relacionada con la dieta y/o ejercicio físico. Entre los motivos de incumplimiento se señala especialmente el olvido, seguido del temor a los efectos secundarios. Existen diferencias en salud y bienestar entre quienes siguen las recomendaciones y quienes no; aquélla son estadísticamente significativas en la dieta y el ejercicio físico. El apoyo social juega un papel importante en la adherencia, en la salud y el bienestar subjetivo. Conclusiones: El conocimiento de los factores relacionados con el incumplimiento terapéutico y su vinculación con la salud y el bienestar ayuda a planificar actuaciones encaminadas a la prevención de la enfermedad en el ámbito laboral.Objectives: a) to analyse the levels of adherence to treatment by the workers studied, b) to determine the factors related to therapeutic failure and thus to participants´ health and well-being and c) to make the design of future preventive strategies. Methods: The study was carried out during 2008 in the Prevention Service of Central Services, National Institute of Social Security. A questionnaire was designed and applied to each patient (employee). This instrument contains the type of disease, treatment, reasons for non-compliance, social support, health and subjective well-being, in addition to sociodemographic variables. Results: The analysis shows that adherence to medication is higher than adherence to diet and/or exercise. Among the reasons for non-compliance are oversight and the fear of side effects. There are differences in health and well-being between those who follow recommendations and those who don´t. These differences are significant statistically in diet and exercise. Social support plays an important role in adherence, health and subjective well-being. Conclusions: Knowledge of factors related to therapeutic failure and its relationship to health and well-being helps to plan actions to prevent the disease in the workplace.

Realizamos recorridos de campo durante la temporada de marzo a septiembre del 2000 para obtener la distribución actual de cébidos presentes en el estado de Campeche, México. Por medio de encuestas y observaciones directas, se determinó la distribución de Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis, Alouatta pigra y se documentó por primera vez localidades en Campeche donde se encuentra Alouatta palliata mexicana. Se elaboraron mapas de distribución de las especies con la ayuda de los paquetes ArcInfo y ArcView por medio de la sobreposición de coberturas de vegetación, obtenidas en el Inventario Nacional Forestal (1995) y los puntos de registro obtenidos durante el trabajo de campo. En los mapas se presenta la distribución verificada y probable de cada especie. Con la ayuda de los atributos de dicho inventario se calcularon las áreas de distribución confiable resultando 22 736 km 2 para Alouatta sp. y 18 501 km 2 para A. g. yucatanensis. Se presenta la superficie ocupada por cada especie en los diferentes tipos de vegetación y el porcentaje respectivo, así como el porcentaje de ocupación de las especies en el territorio del Estado, para la discusión de las afinidades ecológicas. Para Alouatta, se corroboró su capacidad para soportar la presión de encontrase en ambientes perturbados ocasionados por la fragmentación del hábitat, al ser este ambiente el ocupado con mayor proporción por este género. En el caso de A. g. yucatanensis encontramos que presenta una mayor afinidad a los ambientes no perturbados.We carried out surveys realized field work from March to September 2000 to get the current distribution of Cebids in the state of Campeche, Mexico. Based on interviews and direct observations. We defined the distribution of Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis and Alouatta pigra and we documented the first time localities where Allouata palliata is found in the state. We made distributional maps of each species using vegetation overlays from Inventario Nacional Forestal (Inv For) and each point documented during fieldwork. We presented the distribution of species according to confiability of the verified or expected data. Using the attributes table of Inv For, we calculated the areas of distribution which were 22 735 km² for Alouatta sp. and 18 501km² for A. g. yucatanensis. We also presented the area occupied by each species according to vegetation types and the relative proportion of these vegetation types in the state. We confirmed the ability of Alouatta sp. to survive in disturbed environments produced by habitat fragmentation, and the affinity of A. g. yucatanesis to well preserved habitats.

Los profesionales que desempeñan su labor en el ámbito sanitario son una población especial- mente vulnerable a los riesgos derivados de su trabajo. En general, el profesional sanitario conoce cuáles son los factores de riesgo más comunes a los que se expone en su entorno laboral así como las medidas protectoras que debe ejecutar para evitar la aparición de accidentes o enfermedades profesionales. Sin embargo, ese conocimiento por sí solo no es suficiente para instaurar una serie de hábitos comportamentales dirigidos al mantenimiento de la salud y la pre- vención de la enfermedad. Desde la Psicología social se han propuesto determinados modelos acerca del comportamiento arriesgado en los que el componente cognitivo se presenta como un factor clave para explicar por qué los individuos ejecutan determinadas conductas que ponen en peligro su integridad física o psicológica. En este trabajo se postula la necesidad de incluir otras variables de interés, de mayor implicación psicosocial, que permitan el diseño de intervencio- nes dirigidas a prevenir la ocurrencia de accidentes laborales en este grupo de población.

Con base en el muestreo de siete localidades y una extensa revisión bibliográfica, se obtuvo la lista de especies de mamíferos terrestres de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an estado de Quintana Roo, México. Durante 57 días de campo, se utilizaron trampas Sherman, Tomahawk, redes de niebla y escopetas, se registraron rastros y observaciones directas. Se registraron 70 especies, ocho órdenes, 22 familias y 57 géneros. Se encontraron seis especies como nuevos registros: Marmosa mexicana, Micronycteris microtis, Micronycteris schmidtorum, Eptesicus furinalis, Rhogeessa parvula y Ototylomys phyllotis. Doce especies son catalogadas bajo algún riesgo ecológico según la Norma Oficial Mexicana; trece especies son endémicas a Mesoamérica y una endémica de México. Se presentan cuadros de abundancia relativa, registro por localidades y por tipo de vegetación de cada especie.Based on sampling at seven localities and an extensive bibliographic research, we present a species list of terrestrial mammals of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, Quintana Roo, Mexico. During 57 days of fieldwork we used Sherman and Tomahawk traps, mist nets, rifles, collected data of trails and made direct observations. We recorded 70 species, eight orders, 22 families, and 57 genera. Six new records are added: Marmosa mexicana, Micronycteris microtis, Micronycteris schmidtorum, Eptesicus furinalis, Rhogeessa parvula, and Ototylomys phyllotis. Twelve species are listed as threatened following the Official Mexican Norm: Tamandua mexicana, Micronycteris brachyotis, Lonchorhina aurita, Alouatta pigra, Ateles geoffroyi, Herpailurus yagouaroundi, Leopardus pardalis, Leopardus wiedii, Panthera onca, Eira barbara, Potos flavus and Tapirus bairdii. Thirteen species are endemic to Mesoamerica: M. mexicana, T. mexicana, Mormoops megalophylla, Tonatia evotis, Bauerus dubiaquercus, A. pigra, A. geoffroyi, T. bairdii, Sciurus deppei, Sciurus yucatanensis, Heteromys gaumeri, O. phyllotis, Reithrodontomys gracilis and one endemic to Mexico: Peromyscus yucatanicus. We present tables of records for every locality and corresponding vegetation types for every species. Of 65 registered species, all were recorded in medium semievergreen forest, with 50% exclusively for this vegetation type. A reference collection was established with 200 specimens, representing 43 species.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated the utility of DNA barcoding in the discovery of overlooked species and in the connection of immature and adult stages. In this study, we use DNA barcoding to examine diversity patterns in 121 species of Nymphalidae from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Our results suggest the presence of cryptic species in 8 of these 121 taxa. As well, the reference database derived from the analysis of adult specimens allowed the identification of nymphalid caterpillars providing new details on host plant use. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We gathered DNA barcode sequences from 857 adult Nymphalidae representing 121 different species. This total includes four species (Adelpha iphiclus, Adelpha malea, Hamadryas iphtime and Taygetis laches) that were initially overlooked because of their close morphological similarity to other species. The barcode results showed that each of the 121 species possessed a diagnostic array of barcode sequences. In addition, there was evidence of cryptic taxa; seven species included two barcode clusters showing more than 2% sequence divergence while one species included three clusters. All 71 nymphalid caterpillars were identified to a species level by their sequence congruence to adult sequences. These caterpillars represented 16 species, and included Hamadryas julitta, an endemic species from the Yucatan Peninsula whose larval stages and host plant (Dalechampia schottii, also endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula) were previously unknown. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: This investigation has revealed overlooked species in a well-studied museum collection of nymphalid butterflies and suggests that there is a substantial incidence of cryptic species that await full characterization.
