Abstract

Formed of papers presented at the 20th International Conference on Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements, this volume provides a view of the latest work on the interaction between computational methods and experiments. The continuous improvement in computer efficiency, coupled with diminishing costs and the rapid development of numerical procedures have generated an ever-increasing expansion of computational simulations that permeate all fields of science and technology. As these procedures continue to grow in magnitude and complexity, it is essential to validate their results to be certain of their reliability. This can be achieved by performing dedicated and accurate experiments, which have undergone constant and enormous development. At the same time, current experimental techniques have become more complex and sophisticated so that they require the intensive use of computers, both for running experiments as well as acquiring and processing the resulting data. Abstract

This book contains the results of the sixteenth in a biennial series of meetings organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology to facilitate that communication between scientists who perform experiments, researchers who develop computer codes, and those who carry out measurements on prototypes. The conference was first held in 1984. While computer models are now more reliable and better able to represent more realistic problems, experimental measurements need to be conditioned to the requirements of the computational models. Progress of engineering sciences depends on the orderly and progressive concurrent development of all three fields. Spermatogoniale stamcellen staan aan de basis van de productie van mannelijke zaadcellen. Het is essentieel dat deze stamcellen een goede balans vinden tussen zelfvernieuwing en differentiatie; een verstoring hierin kan leiden tot onvruchtbaarheid of testiskanker. Gianfranco Carlomagno onderzocht welke groei- en omgevingsfactoren die balans beïnvloeden. Hij ontdekte dat de groeifactoren BMP4 en Activine A spermatogoniale stamcellen tot differentiatie aanzetten, net als verhoging van de kweektemperatuur.

Abstract

This special issue of the Journal of Modern Optics contains extended versions of selected papers accepted and presented at the 10th International Workshop on Advanced Infrared Technology and Applications held on 8-11 September 2009 at the Astronomy and Space Science Department of the University of Florence, Italy. The workshop - an event in a biennial series of meetings that started in 1991, and organised by Fondazione 'Giorgio Ronchi' (Florence), the Institutes of Information Science and Technologies 'Alessandro Faedo' (Pisa), Construction Technologies (Padova), Applied Physics 'Nello Carrara' (Florence) of the Italian National Research Council and the CREO Consortium, L'Aquila - constitutes a forum for bringing together academic and industrial researchers to exchange knowledge, ideas and experiences in the field of infrared (IR) science and technology. The main topics of the workshop included, in particular, advanced technology and materials, smart and fibre-optic sensors, aerospace and industrial applications, astronomy and earth monitoring, nondestructive tests and evaluation, systems for cultural heritage, near-, mid-, and long-wavelength systems, and image processing and data analysis. This special issue includes 17 papers that discuss scientific and technological aspects related to a few of these areas.

33. Finding the best therapeutic approach for PCOS: the importance of inositol(s) bioavailability.

Abstract

Broadening clinical evidence has markedly designated inositol(s) as a common and effective therapeutic approach for PCOS and infertility. Although considerable research has been focused on the use in clinical practice of myo-inositol (myo-ins) and D-chiro-inositol (D-chiro-ins), the two major inositol stereoisomers, less attention has been paid to their bioavailability. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to gather and analyze information on inositol( s) bioavailability, to better delineate its optimal concentration for scientific and clinical purposes. Throughout the search in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Research Gate we identified only two studies that investigated the pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of different myo-ins administrations. This analysis found no advantage in terms of PK for single 4 g dosing of myo-ins compared to 2 g twice a day, which allowed to get a 24-hour coverage, contrary to the singular dose. Indeed, the differences regarding the area under the curve (AUC) between the two PK profiles are linked only to the maximum concentration (Cmax) but not to the time variable. In conclusion, splitting the therapeutic dosage of 4 g myo-ins in two distinct administrations seems to be the best approach for a full-day coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
