10. Promoting Students' Safety and Wellbeing: Ethical Practice in Schools

Abstract

Although 'child safety' is now a national policy priority in Australia, there is little research exploring the "practices" in schools that contribute to children and young people's felt sense of safety and wellbeing. Drawing on a mixed-method Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project, this article presents findings from interviews with school staff (N = 10), leaders (N = 5) and nine focus groups with students (N = 58), in primary and secondary schools in three Australian states (New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia). We employ relational ethics, recognition theory and the theory of practice architectures to explore practices at school that support student wellbeing and safety. The findings contribute significantly to understanding the 'bundled' nature of current practices and the conditions that enable and constrain these. Close attention to these findings is critical as schools seek to operationalise the National Child Safe Principles and refine ongoing safeguarding procedures. The findings have informed the development of an online survey that is currently testing, on a much larger scale, which elements of ethical practice are most positively associated with students' safety, wellbeing and recognition at school.

Abstract Objective The resting‐state functional connectome has not been extensively investigated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) spectrum disease, in particular in relationship with patients' genetic status. Methods Here we studied the network‐to‐network connectivity of 19 ALS patients carrying the C9orf72 hexanucleotide repeat expansion (C9orf72+), 19 ALS patients not affected by C9orf72 mutation (C9orf72−), and 19 ALS‐mimic patients (ALSm) well‐matched for demographic and clinical variables. Results When compared with ALSm, we observed greater connectivity of the default mode and frontoparietal networks with the visual network for C9orf72+ patients (P = 0.001). Abstract

Meeting of non-trivial topology with magnetism results in novel phases of matter, such as quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) or axion insulator phases. Even more exotic states with high and tunable Chern numbers are expected at the contact of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (IMTIs) and 2D topological insulators (TIs). Here we synthesize a heterostructures composed of 2D TI and 3D IMTIs, specifically of bismuth bilayer on top of MnBi2Te4-family of compounds and study their electronic properties by means of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT). The epitaxial interface is characterized by hybridized Bi and IMTI electronic states. The Bi bilayer-derived states on different members of MnBi2Te4-family of materials are similar, except in the region of mixing with the topological surface states of the substrate. In that region, the new, substrate dependent interface Dirac state is observed. Our ab initio calculations show rich interface phases with emergence of exchange split 1D edge states, making the Bi/IMTI heterostructures promising playground for observation of novel members in the family of quantum Hall effects.

Abstract

Abstract Stasis dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis that typically presents with nonspecific signs and symptoms such as pruritic and xerotic skin, aching legs, and areas of dyspigmentation (red or brown in lighter skin tones and brown, purple, gray, or ashen in darker skin tones). These signs and symptoms are often misdiagnosed as other conditions, such as cellulitis. Moreover, within healthcare systems, SD is often overlooked due to a lack of understanding of the magnitude and impact of the condition, as well as incomplete recognition of the various presenting clinical manifestations. Inadequate or inappropriate management may lead to disease progression, including worsening edema, pain, and itch as well as complications such as venous leg ulcers. When patients do seek medical attention (often upon worsening of the condition), a diagnosis of SD is often challenging because of physician lack of expertise and the plethora of disorders that may manifest similarly to SD. Furthermore, upon diagnosis, evidence‐based treatment options are limited, and adherence to SD treatment regimens is often low. SD significantly impacts patient and caregiver quality of life (QoL), with far‐reaching psychosocial and socioeconomic effects. In this review, we describe the patient journey associated with SD and the challenges associated with diagnosis, the burden of disease and impact on patient QoL, and the unmet needs that remain with current therapeutic options.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence aims to be the solution to multiple engineering problems by trying to emulate the human learning process. In this sense, maritime transport standards have clearly evolved, which are based on two principal pillars: the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). Based on a formal safety assessment research process, these pillars try to solve most of the maritime transport accidents, which, in their final steps, are associated with human factors. In this research, an original methodology employing a deep learning process for image recognition during mooring line operation, a dangerous process on ships, is developed. The main results indicate that the proposed method is an excellent tool for advising ship officers on watch and, consequently, provides a new way to prevent human factors onboard from causing accidents, which in the future must be considered in international standards.

Most accidents on board are related to human factors which, at the same time, are associated with the workload of the crew members and the working environment. The number of alarms is so high that, most of the time, instead of helping to prevent accidents, it causes more stress for crew members, which can result in accidents. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are being employed in the recognition of images, which depends on the quality of the images, the image recognition algorithm, and the very complex configuration of the neural network. This research study aims to develop a user-friendly image recognition tool that may act as a visual sensor of alarms adjusted to the particular needs of the ship operator. To achieve this, a marine engineering simulator was employed to develop an image recognition tool that advises marine engineering officers when they are conducting their maintenance activities, with the aim to reduce their stress as a work risk prevention tool. Results showed adequate accuracy for three-layer Convolutional Neural Networks and balanced data, and the use of external cameras stands out for user-friendly applications.

Abstract Geometrically frustrated kagome lattices are raising as novel platforms to engineer correlated topological electron flat bands that are prominent to electronic instabilities. Here, we demonstrate a phonon softening at the k z = π plane in ScV6Sn6. The low energy longitudinal phonon collapses at ~98 K and q = $$\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{2}$$ 1 3 1 3 1 2 due to the electron-phonon interaction, without the emergence of long-range charge order which sets in at a different propagation vector q CDW = $$\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{3}$$ 1 3 1 3 1 3 . Theoretical calculations corroborate the experimental finding to indicate that the leading instability is located at $$\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{2}$$ 1 3 1 3 1 2 of a rather flat mode. We relate the phonon renormalization to the orbital-resolved susceptibility of the trigonal Sn atoms and explain the approximately flat phonon dispersion. Our data report the first example of the collapse of a kagome bosonic mode and promote the 166 compounds of kagomes as primary candidates to explore correlated flat phonon-topological flat electron physics.

Abstract

Abstract Background Systemic inflammation has been proposed as a relevant mechanism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Still, comprehensive data on ALS patients' innate and adaptive immune responses and their effect on the clinical phenotype are lacking. Here, we investigate systemic immunity in a population‐based ALS cohort using readily available hematological indexes. Methods We collected clinical data and the complete blood count (CBC) at diagnosis in ALS patients from the Piemonte and Valle d'Aosta Register for ALS (PARALS) from 2007 to 2019. Leukocytes populations, neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic‐immune‐inflammation index (SII), and lymphocyte‐to‐monocyte ratio (LMR) were derived from CBC. All variables were analyzed for association with clinical features in the entire cohort and then in sex‐ and age‐based subgroups. Results Neutrophils (P = 0.001) and markers of increased innate immunity (NLR, P = 0.008 and SII, P = 0.006) were associated with a faster disease progression. Similarly, elevated innate immunity correlated with worse pulmonary function and shorter survival. The prognosis in women also correlated with low lymphocytes (P = 0.045) and a decreased LMR (P = 0.013). ALS patients with cognitive impairment exhibited lower monocytes (P = 0.0415). Conclusions and Relevance The dysregulation of the systemic immune system plays a multifaceted role in ALS. More specifically, an elevated innate immune response is associated with faster progression and reduced survival. Conversely, ALS patients with cognitive impairment showed a reduction in monocyte count. Additionally, immune response varied according to sex and age, thus suggesting that involved immune pathways are patient specific. Further studies will help translate those findings into clinical practice or targeted treatments.

Introduction and objectivesMitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) mediates the entry of pyruvate into mitochondria, determining whether pyruvate is incorporated into the Krebs cycle or metabolized in the cytosol. In heart failure (HF), a large amount of pyruvate is metabolized to lactate in the cytosol rather than being oxidized inside the mitochondria. Thus, MPC activity or expression might play a key role in the fate of pyruvate during HF. The purpose of this work was to study the levels of the two subunits of this carrier, named MPC1 and MPC2, in human hearts with HF of different etiologies.MethodsProtein and mRNA expression analyses were conducted in cardiac tissues from three donor groups: patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC), and donors without cardiac pathology (Control). MPC2 plasma levels were determined by ELISA.ResultsSignificant reductions in the levels of MPC1, MPC2, and Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) were observed in ICM patients compared with the levels in the Control group. However, no statistically significant differences were revealed in the analysis of MPC1 and MPC2 gene expression among the groups. Interestingly, Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDH) subunits expression were increased in the ICM patients. In the case of IDC patients, a significant decrease in MPC1 was observed only when compared with the Control group. Notably, plasma MPC2 levels were found to be elevated in both disease groups compared with that in the Control group.ConclusionDecreases in MPC1 and/or MPC2 levels were detected in the cardiac tissues of HFrEF patients, with ischemic or idiopatic origen, indicating a potential reduction in mitochondrial pyruvate uptake in the heart, which could be linked to unfavorable clinical features.

In this chapter, a general view of experimental techniques able to deliver gas phase chemical kinetics data at low and very low temperatures will be presented. These techniques apply to the study of reactions between neutral reactants on the one hand and reactions involving charge species on the other hand.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence seems to be a new point of view to classical problems that, in the past, could not be understood in depth, leaving certain gaps in each knowledge area. As an example of this, maritime accidents are one of the most recognised international problems, with clear environmental and human life consequences. From the beginning, statistical studies have shown that not only the typical sampled variables must be considered but the accidents are related to human factors that, at the same time, are related to some variables like fatigue that cannot be easily sampled. In this research work, the use of machine learning algorithms on over 300 maritime accidents is proposed to identify the relationship between human factors and the main variables. The results showed that compliance with the minimum crew members and ship length are the two most relevant variables related to each accident for the Spanish Search and Rescue (SAR) region, as well as the characteristics of the ships. These accidents could be understood as three main groups of accidents related to the general tendency to not meet the minimum number of crew members and its difference in the year of construction of the ship. Finally, it was possible to use neural networks to model accidents with sufficient accuracy (determination factor higher than 0.60), which is particularly interesting in the context of a control system for maritime transport.

Abstract

Ship maneuvering in ports is increasingly reduced because the increase in ship size is not proportional to the increase in port areas. Furthermore, the number of assisted vessels and the need for tugboats working in densely populated areas make it necessary to reduce the number of involved tugboats, reducing pollution and costs. Therefore, shiphandlers must know, in addition to the pivot point, the center of lateral resistance under any circumstance to optimize the assistance from tugboats and improve maritime navigation. From the literature, it is evident that the practical determination of the center of lateral resistance is still unknown. This paper aims to propose novel mathematical models to identify the position of this point and the most important variables that determine its position. For that, data of different ships in different conditions were obtained from a full mission bridge simulator. Afterwards, 15 novel mathematical models were developed, making use of artificial intelligence tools and training neural networks. The high determination factor reached in some models shows the accuracy of the obtained models. One advantage of the presented models is that they are very easy to be applied by shiphandlers, because highly well-known parameters are involved. Moreover, original 3D charts showing the combination of the input variables were generated to identify the map of the whole process. The very simple new models obtained and the novel 3D charts shown in the present paper can be considered useful and applicable by the shiphandlers of most of the merchant fleet to improve the efficiency and safety of maritime navigation in increasingly restricted waters.

Abstract

Introduction. To describe a rare case of solitary bone cyst in the vertebral body of the lumbar vertebra in an adult patient. The solitary bone cyst is defined as a cystic lesion with liquid content. Few cases have been described in the vertebral location without preference for the posterior arch or vertebral body. Most have been treated with resection, curettage, and/or grafting. No case described to date has been treated with polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) injection in the vertebral location. Case Presentation. A 50-year-old male patient was consulted for lumbar pain with no traumatic history and no neurologic deficit. The radiological study showed lumbar arthrodesis with L2-L4 instrumentation due to an L3 fracture twenty years earlier. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed a lytic lesion occupying practically the entire vertebral body of L5, with incomplete septum and sclerotic edge, without cortical rupture. The previous steel instrumentation was removed, to avoid the presence of artifacts when performing the magnetic resonance (MR), and a biopsy of L5 vertebra was performed via transpedicular in the same act. The MR study findings and biopsy were compatible with the simple bone cyst. Finally, a new intervention was performed by filling the lesion with PMMA. Follow-up at 5 years was satisfactory without lumbar pain as well as the radiological study and with a return to previous activity. Conclusions. The spinal location of the simple bone cyst is extremely infrequent. Its diagnosis excludes other lesions and is made by imaging studies and biopsy. Treatment can be performed by excision, curettage, or filling with graft or as in this case, with PMMA.
