What you will hear today is a small part of a book that I am writing on The Ritual Forms of Narrative in the Age of Virgil. A section of this book aims to show how Rome’s ritual calendar helped structure a great deal of Latin poetry—naturally, we think of such structures when considering Ovid’s Fasti, an obviously calendrical poem. One of the things I demonstrate is that such structures were far more important, and ubiquitous, than ever suspected, and that the divide between the study of literature and religion, and certain inherited ideologies of historical interpretation, not least confessional battles in post-Reformation Europe, are largely responsible for this fact. Today, I will be discussing Horace’s war against the Canicule, the hottest season of the year, thus named because it is when the Canis, the dog-star, Sirius, rises, in antiquity around what we would call 17 July. To do so, we will do a close reading of the short and unassuming final poem of his first book of Odes; we will then use this as a way to open up new interpretations of Horace’s life’s work, as well as to expose a part of what I call, in my book, Horace’s Fasti.

Air temperatures measured by the MUSTARDijon network are analyzed during the summer 2018 (July 24 - August 8) heat wave. The WUDAPT method is applied to Dijon to identify Local Climate Zones (LCZs). Diurnal rhythms and nighttime mean temperatures are analyzed according to LCZs as well as to altitude and distance to the city center. During warm nights, altitude plays a negligible role. The temperatures depend to the distance of the city center. They are also associated to the anthropization summarized by the LCZs. Form of the building and vegetation are the two keys to understand and modulate the night temperatures which have the greatest impact on human health during heat waves., Les températures de l’air mesurées par le réseau MUSTARDijon sont analysées lors de la canicule de l’été 2018 (24 juillet - 8 août). La méthode WUDAPT est appliquée à l’agglomération de Dijon afin d’identifier les Local Climate Zones (LCZs). Les rythmes diurnes et les moyennes nocturnes des températures sont analysés selon les LCZs ainsi qu’en fonction de l’altitude et de la distance au centre-ville. Lors des nuits caniculaires, l’altitude joue un rôle négligeable. Les températures dépendent de la distance au centre-ville. Elles sont également associées au type d’anthropisation résumé par les LCZs. Forme du bâti et végétation sont les deux clés permettant de comprendre et de moduler les températures nocturnes, celles qui impactent le plus la santé humaine lors des canicules.

I propose here a new mechanism by which excessive residual water losses caused by high cuticular permeabilities and a high leaf-to-air vapor pressure deficits would trigger uncontrolled and sudden cavitation events. The combination of heat and drought stresses may therefore lead to an unsuspected risk of hydraulic failure. I explored this hypothesis with a new mechanistic model. The simulations support this hypothesis and highlight the critical role played by the cuticle phase transition temperature. Experiments are now awaited to confirm these predictions.

Ce cahier thématique des cahiers du GREC-SUD portant sur la santé et le changement climatique est destiné aux décideurs, gestionnaires de territoires et professionnels de santé. Il constitue une première approche pour mieux appréhender les conséquences du changement climatique en Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Cities have a direct impact on the local climate. The heating of surfaces and materials in urban area and the production of heat by traffic and human activity contribute to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This local climate will be even more dangerous with climate change. Climate projections for the world suggest elevated minimum and maximum temperatures and more frequent day with higher temperatures (heat wave). Hence, climate change is threatening human well being and health. Today, more than 50% of the world population lives in urban areas and humans spend more than 80% of their time in confined spaces. This can be affected negatively by indoors temperatures. Indoor temperatures are of special importance for well-being and health in general.Quantitative information about outdoor thermal comfort, on various temporal and spatial scales, is required to design better cities and mitigate heat problems not only for warm as well as temperate climates. The overall objective of this study is to explore the relation between indoor and outdoor temperature by urban features such as geometry (type of urban structure), housing areas, building arrangements and several other factors. We use the SURFEX model (that is implemented in several weather prediction models and can also be used alone) to estimate urban temperatures (in street canyons and inside buildings). Therefore, two questions arise: how to represent the outputs of the SURFEX model both spatially and temporally? This work is part of a study conducted in summer 2015 which gathered data from air temperature sensors in five apartments. So for our study, the information given by the model is completed by measures to study the influence of building characteristics and situation on temperatures. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of thermal comfort in climate scenarios to describe the combined effects of changes in multiple apartments and to more realistically measure its impact on humans.

42 p.; La priorité scientifique et technique "Maîtrise des Risques" du programme de recherche 2010-2013 du CSTB avait pour ambition de contribuer à éviter les victimes en protégeant les personnes présentes dans le bâti, de limiter les dommages économiques en protégeant les biens et d'assurer la résilience tant technique qu'humaine. Les travaux portaient sur les risques naturels et anthropiques (incendie, vent, séisme, canicule...) et étaient organisés en quatre projets de recherche. Ce rapport présente le contexte de la recherche et les résultats obtenus entre 2010 et 2013. // The objective of the research priority "Risk Mitigation" of CSTB 2010-2013 research program of CSTB was, in case of a disaster, to avoid death by protecting people in buildings, to reduce economic losses by protecting goods and to support human and technical resiliency. The research carried out covered natural hazard (wind, seism, heatwave, flood...) and fire risk. The program was divided into four projects. This report summarizes the context of the research and the results obtained between 2010 and 2013.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [TR1_IRSTEA]SEDYVIN; International audience; Exceptional climatic events from 2003 to 2005 (scorching heat and drought) affected the whole of the vegetation in the French Mediterranean region and in particular Scott pines (Pinus sylvestris L.), one of the most important forest tree species in this area. To understand its response to these extreme conditions, we investigated its radial growth, branch length growth, architectural development and reproduction for the period 19952005, and linked these variables to climatic parameters. We used four plots situated in southeastern France and presenting different levels of site quality and potential forest productivity. The results show that: (1) the climatic episode 20032005 was highly detrimental to the growth (bole and branches), crown development, and cone production but favoured the production of male flowers; (2)these variables depend on climatic factors of both the current and previous years; (3) the 2003 scorching heat impact was strong but was mainly apparent from 2004; it was part of a 6-year-long unfavourable cycle beginning in 2000, characterized by high minimum and maximum temperatures and very dry springs;(4) in spite of a significant effect of site quality, the Scots pine's response to extreme climatic conditions was homogeneous in the French Mediterranean area; and (5) the stress induced by poor site conditions generally resulted in the same consequences for tree growth, architecture, and reproduction as in unfavourable climatic conditions.; Des événements climatiques exceptionnels de 2003 à 2005 (canicule et sécheresse) ont affecté la végétation dans la région de la Méditerranée française et en particulier le pin sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.), une des principales essences forestières de cette région. Pour comprendre sa réponse à ces conditions extrêmes, nous avons examiné sa croissance radiale, la croissance en longueur des branches, le développement architectural et la reproduction pendant la période 1995-2005 et avons relié ces variables avec les paramètres climatiques. Nous avons utilisé quatre placettes situées dans le sud-est de la France et présentant des niveaux différents de qualité stationnelle et de productivité forestière potentielle. Les résultats montrent que : (1) l'épisode climatique 2003-2005 était fortement néfaste à la croissance (tronc et branches), au développement du houppier et à la production de cônes, mais a favorisé la production de fleurs mâles; (2) ces variables dépendent des facteurs climatiques des années en cours et précédente; (3) l'impact de canicule 2003 était fort, mais était principalement apparent de 2004; il faisait partie d'un cycle défavorable de 6 ans commençant en 2000, caractérisé par des hautes températures minimales et maximales et des printemps très secs; (4) malgré un effet significatif de la qualité stationnelle, la réponse du pin sylvestre aux conditions climatiques extrêmes était homogène dans la zone méditerranéenne française; Et (5) le stress provoqué par de mauvaises conditions stationnelles avait généralement les mêmes conséquences pour la croissance , l'architecture et la reproduction du pin sylvestre que des conditions climatiques défavorables.

The genetic control of tree ring growth in Douglas-fir in response to the drought and heat-wave that occurred in 2003 in Europe was studied with microdensity profiles in three clonal experiments located in three different French regions. The drought and heat-wave significantly affected Douglas-fir wood formation. The Chassenoix site (Northeast of Massif-Central) was more severely affected that the other two: the 2003 year-ring was narrower and less dense than in the other sites and than the previous (2002) and following (2004) year-rings in the same site: ring growth stopped earlier and latewood did not develop completely. The year-rings 2004 and 2002 were very similar in this site. There was a significant genetic control for all ring parameters in the three sites and during the three years. The heritability was highly variable between years and among sites, without any clear pattern in this variability, except in Chassenoix where it was slightly lower in the 2003 year-ring. Variables measuring the response of trees to the 2003 event, i.e., the difference in ring width between 2002 and 2003, or between 2003 and 2004, showed a very variable degree of genetic control, from very low to relatively high. Douglas-fir seemed plastic enough to acclimate to the drought and heat-wave and then to recover during 2004. Furthermore the level of heritability estimated demonstrates that Douglas-fir has an adaptive potential that could be useful for multi-generation long-term response., La réponse du douglas à la canicule de 2003 en France a été étudiée à l'aide de profils microdensitométriques obtenus sur des arbres de 3 tests clonaux situés dans 3 régions différentes. La canicule a significativement affecté la formation du bois du douglas. Les arbres du site de Chassenoix, situé dans le Morvan, ont réagi plus fortement que ceux des 2 autres : le cerne de l'année de la canicule est plus étroit et moins dense que le même cerne dans les 2 autres sites et plus étroit et moins dense que les cernes immédiatement antérieur (2002) et postérieur (2004) dans le même site ; la formation du bois s'est arrêtée plus tôt et le bois final ne s'est pas complètement développé. À Chassenoix, le cerne de l'année 2004 ressemble plus au cerne 2002 qu'au cerne 2003, ce qui traduit une récupération. Nous mettons en évidence un contrôle génétique significatif pour toutes les variables intra-cernes dans les 3 sites, pour les 3 années 2002, 2003 et 2004. Les héritabilités sont très variables entre caractères, sites et années, sans structure particulière, sauf à Chassenoix où ces héritabilités sont légèrement plus faibles durant l'année de la canicule. Des variables décrivant la réponse des arbres entre 2002 et 2003 puis 2003 et 2004 sont très irrégulièrement contrôlées génétiquement, avec des héritabilités allant de 0 à près de 0,5. Le douglas semble avoir été suffisamment plastique pour s'acclimater à la sécheresse et canicule puis pour récupérer en 2004 une croissance proche de celle de 2002. De plus, son potentiel génétique démontré par le niveau d'héritabilité estimé lui donne également une capacité adaptative multi-génération à plus long terme.

International audience; In a global warming scenario, drought and heat waves like the one that occurred in 2003 in Europe are expected to become more intense and frequent. This extreme climate event strongly affected the hydraulic balance in many forest tree species including Douglas-fir, with symptoms ranging from partial crown necrosis to death. We studied a French Douglas-fir provenance trial, strongly affected by the 2003 drought and heat wave. Using wood X-ray microdensity profiles as a record of cambium response to environmental variations, we compared mean stem density and growth between dead and alive neighbouring trees and several microdensity characters measured over 17 growth rings previous to 2003. Special attention has been given to the sampling layout in order to minimize the micro-environmental effects. At tree level, surviving trees have a significantly higher mean stem density. At tree ring level, they have a significantly higher mean ring density, maximum ring density, latewood density and, to a lesser extent, latewood proportion. No significant difference was found for diameter growth. These results could have direct implications in the way to study and predict possible acclimation and adaptation of forest trees to climate change process. Wood could be used for the selection of genotypes with a desirable plasticity and resistance to drought induced-cavitation.

This paper deals with the impact of climate change on the productivity of Pinus halepensis and Pinus silvestris in the French Mediterranean area and the shift of the bioclimatic limit between theses two pines. It also gives some of the main synthetic results of this research, based mainly on dendroecology. The experimental design includes a series of plots distributed along an altitudinal transect on the north slope of Sainte-Baume mountain. The choice of the site, homogeneous for rainfall regime, as well as the homogeneity in substrata, soil and topography at the level of plots, allows to focus on the variations of the response of trees due to differences in mean annual temperatures. Additional plots with soils much deeper or much shallower than those of the main transect also allow studying the interaction between climate and soil water balance on the growth of trees. The impact of the exceptional scorching heat and drought of year 2003 is also analyzed. The response of trees to monthly climatic parameters depends a lot on the annual mean temperature and soil water balance. The climate warming should thus produce significant effects on the short-term on forest productivity. While the productivity of the Pinus halepensis strongly increased during the 20th century, that of Pinus silvestris decreased strongly in the same period. Year 2003 reduced directly the growth of these pines. But, especially by its detrimental delayed effects on their health status and their leaf area, it limits their potential growth for several following years. The productivity of these two pines should be reduced strongly in the next decades. Many withering stands observed in Pinus silvestris distribution area since 2003 show that the survival of large areas of this species is threatened in the short or middle term by climate warming in the French Mediterranean region., Cet article présente l'impact du changement climatique sur la productivité du pin d'Alep et du pin sylvestre en forêt méditerranéenne et le déplacement de la limite bioclimatique entre ces deux espèces. Les travaux sont surtout basés sur la dendroécologie. Le dispositif expérimental comporte une série de placettes réparties le long d'un transect altitudinal sur le versant nord du massif de la Sainte-Baume. Le choix du site, homogène pour le régime pluviométrique, ainsi que la grande homogénéité des substrats, des sols et de la topographie au niveau des placettes permet de mettre en évidence les variations de réactivité des arbres au climat sur le seul critère de différences de températures. L'adjonction de placettes complémentaires avec des sols beaucoup plus ou beaucoup moins profonds ceux du transect principal permet aussi d'étudier l'interaction entre climat et réserve hydrique du sol sur la croissance des arbres. L'impact de la canicule et de la sécheresse exceptionnelles de l'année 2003 est aussi analysé. Le dispositif montre que la réactivité des arbres aux paramètres climatiques mensuels dépend beaucoup de la température moyenne annuelle et de la réserve hydrique des sols. Le réchauffement climatique devrait donc produire des effets significatifs sur la productivité forestière à court terme. Alors que la productivité du pin d'Alep a augmenté fortement au cours du 20ème siècle, celle du pin sylvestre a diminué tout aussi fortement. L'année 2003 a réduit directement la croissance de ces pins mais, surtout par ses effets différés sur leur état sanitaire et leur surface foliaire, limite leur capacité de croissance pour de nombreuses années. La productivité de ces deux pins devrait se réduire fortement dans les décennies à venir. Les dépérissements observés dans les peuplements de pin sylvestre depuis 2003 montrent que l'avenir de vastes surfaces de cette espèce est menacé à court ou moyen terme par le réchauffement climatique dans la région PACA.

Résumé - La chaleur et la sécheresse 2003 : une synthèse climatique. Températures et sécheresse ont été extrêmes en Europe durant l'été 2003. Les valeurs les plus anormales ont été atteintes par les températures maximales en juin et en août. La répartition spatiale des anomalies de température montre des similarités frappantes entre ces deux mois dans les zones les plus concernées. Des températures généralement supérieures à la normale ont régné sur une grande partie de l'Europe centrale et occidentale de mai à septembre 2003. Le déficit des précipitations a été particulièrement prononcé durant l'été 2003, mais a duré de février 2003 à juin 2004. L'insolation a été supérieure à la normale, non seulement durant l'été mais durant toute l'année 2003. La sécheresse qui a touché la végétation durant l'été 2003 a été renforcée par la durée prolongée du déficit de précipitations et d'humidité, par les températures extrêmement élevées durant l'été ainsi que des valeurs élevées d'insolation.; International audience; Heat and drought were extreme in summer 2003 in Europe. Climatic data show that most extreme were maximum air temperatures in June and August; maps of these two months show a striking similarity in geographical range. Over wide regions, monthly mean temperatures were more than 4 ◦C above the long term mean values. The heat lasted from May to September in large parts of western and central Europe. The lack of precipitation was most severe in summer 2003 but precipitation was generally below normal from February 2003 until June 2004 (with the exception of two months). Sunshine duration was above normal, particularly in regions which usually have rainy and cloudy episodes in summer, and relative air humidity was below normal during the whole year of 2003. The drought experienced by the vegetation in summer 2003 was exacerbated by the length of the period with scarce precipitation and humidity, by the heat during the summer and by long sunshine duration.
