Means for evaluating the response of deep-sea creatures to environmental perturbation are limited because of lethal decompression effects during sampling. The addressing of this issue requires that target species be (i) captured at depth, (ii) recovered at natural pressure, (iii) submitted to in vivo investigations. Although a single container may meet these requirements, we believe that using several dedicated cells greatly expands experimental possibilities. Accordingly, we have designed a new sampling system which has been named PERISCOP and which has accounted for the selective capture and recovery of live animals from depths exceeding 2000m. Three hydrothermal vent shrimp species were sampled on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, from depths of 1700 and 2300m. In addition, a fish caught at 2300m depth reached the surface in very good condition. This is by far the deepest record for the pressurized recovery of a live deep-sea fish. Our prototype aims at making pressurized recovery a more efficient and practical process. Finally, future evolutions of sampling methods are discussed based on the present design of the PERISCOP. Zirconium pentatelluride was recently reported to be a 3D Dirac semimetal, with a single conical band, located at the center of the Brillouin zone. The cone's lack of protection by the lattice symmetry immediately sparked vast discussions about the size and topological or trivial nature of a possible gap opening. Here, we report on a combined optical and transport study of ZrTe5, which reveals an alternative view of electronic bands in this material. We conclude that the dispersion is approximately linear only in the a-c plane, while remaining relatively flat and parabolic in the third direction (along the b axis). Therefore, the electronic states in ZrTe5 cannot be described using the model of 3D Dirac massless electrons, even when staying at energies well above the band gap 2Δ=6 meV found in our experiments at low temperatures. EuCd_{2}As_{2} is now widely accepted as a topological semimetal in which a Weyl phase is induced by an external magnetic field. We challenge this view through firm experimental evidence using a combination of electronic transport, optical spectroscopy, and excited-state photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the EuCd_{2}As_{2} is in fact a semiconductor with a gap of 0.77 eV. We show that the externally applied magnetic field has a profound impact on the electronic band structure of this system. This is manifested by a huge decrease of the observed band gap, as large as 125 meV at 2 T, and, consequently, by a giant redshift of the interband absorption edge. However, the semiconductor nature of the material remains preserved. EuCd_{2}As_{2} is therefore a magnetic semiconductor rather than a Dirac or Weyl semimetal, as suggested by ab initio computations carried out within the local spin-density approximation.

In the Dirac semimetal BaNiS 2 , the Dirac nodes are located along the Γ-M symmetry line of the Brillouin zone, instead of being pinned at fixed high-symmetry points. We take advantage of this peculiar feature to demonstrate the possibility of moving the Dirac bands along the Γ-M symmetry line in reciprocal space by varying the concentration of K atoms adsorbed onto the surface of cleaved BaNiS 2 single crystals. By means of first-principles calculations, we give a full account of this observation by considering the effect of the electrons donated by the K atom on the charge transfer gap, which establishes a promising tool for engineering Dirac states at surfaces, interfaces, and heterostructures.

Optical response of crystalline solids is to a large extent driven by excitations that promote electrons among individual bands. This allows one to apply optical and magneto-optical methods to determine experimentally the energy band gap -a fundamental property crucial to our understanding of any solid-with a great precision. Here it is shown that such conventional methods, applied with great success to many materials in the past, do not work in topological Dirac semimetals with a dispersive nodal line. There, the optically deduced band gap depends on how the magnetic field is oriented with respect to the crystal axes. Such highly unusual behavior is explained in terms of band-gap renormalization driven by Lorentz boosts which results from the Lorentz-covariant form of the Dirac Hamiltonian relevant for the nodal line at low energies., (© 2022 The Authors. Dirac fermions play a central role in the study of topological phases, for they can generate a variety of exotic states, such as Weyl semimetals and topological insulators. The control and manipulation of Dirac fermions constitute a fundamental step toward the realization of novel concepts of electronic devices and quantum computation. By means of Angle-Resolved Photo-Emission Spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments and ab initio simulations, here, we show that Dirac states can be effectively tuned by doping a transition metal sulfide, [Formula: see text], through Co/Ni substitution. The symmetry and chemical characteristics of this material, combined with the modification of the charge-transfer gap of [Formula: see text] across its phase diagram, lead to the formation of Dirac lines, whose position in k-space can be displaced along the [Formula: see text] symmetry direction and their form reshaped. Not only does the doping x tailor the location and shape of the Dirac bands, but it also controls the metal-insulator transition in the same compound, making [Formula: see text] a model system to functionalize Dirac materials by varying the strength of electron correlations., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

There has been increasing interest in materials where relativistic effects induce non-trivial electronic states with promise for spintronics applications. One example is the splitting of bands with opposite spin chirality produced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in asymmetric potentials. Sizable splittings have been hitherto obtained using either heavy elements, where this coupling is intrinsically strong, or large surface electric fields. Here by means of angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we give evidence of a large Rashba coupling of 0.25 eV Å, leading to a remarkable band splitting up to 0.15 eV with hidden spin-chiral polarization in centrosymmetric BaNiS2. This is explained by a huge staggered crystal field of 1.4 V Å(-1), produced by a gliding plane symmetry, that breaks inversion symmetry at the Ni site. This unexpected result in the absence of heavy elements demonstrates an effective mechanism of Rashba coupling amplification that may foster spin-orbit band engineering.

Range shifts are of great importance as a response for species facing climate change. In the light of current ocean-surface warming, many studies have focused on the capacity of marine ectotherms to shift their ranges latitudinally. Bathymetric range shifts offer an important alternative, and may be the sole option for species already at high latitudes or those within enclosed seas; yet relevant data are scant. Hydrostatic pressure (HP) and temperature have wide ranging effects on physiology, importantly acting in synergy thermodynamically, and therefore represent key environmental constraints to bathymetric migration. We present data on transcriptional regulation in a shallow-water marine crustacean (Palaemonetes varians) at atmospheric and high HP following 168-h exposures at three temperatures across the organisms' thermal scope, to establish the potential physiological limit to bathymetric migration by neritic fauna. We observe changes in gene expression indicative of cellular macromolecular damage, disturbances in metabolic pathways and a lack of acclimation after prolonged exposure to high HP. Importantly, these effects are ameliorated (less deleterious) at higher temperatures, and exacerbated at lower temperatures. These data, alongside previously published behavioural and heat-shock analyses, have important implications for our understanding of the potential for climate-driven bathymetric range shifts.

Temperature is one of the main abiotic factors influencing the distribution and abundance of organisms. In the Rhône River Valley, populations of the crustacean Gammarus pulex are distributed along a 5 °C thermal gradient from the North to the South of the valley. In this present work, we investigated the heat shock response of G. pulex according to latitudinal distribution (northern vs. southern populations) and ontogeny (adults vs. embryos from early stages). We isolated two isoforms (one constitutive hsc70 and one inducible hsp70) of heat shock proteins 70 (HSP70) and quantitatively compared their amounts of mRNA after heat shocks, using real-time PCR. Whereas the hsc70 (constitutive) gene did not vary between the two populations, a significant effect of the population was observed on the expression of the hsp70 (inducible) gene in adult specimens. The northern population of amphipods showed a greater magnitude of induction and a 2 °C lower onset temperature when compared to the southern population, suggesting that the northern population is more affected by elevated temperature than the southern one. We demonstrated that the expression of hsp70 may play a crucial role in the persistence of biogeographical patterns of G. pulex, since it reflects the natural distribution of this species along the latitudinal thermal gradient. A differential regulation of hsc70 gene was also observed according to the ontogenetic stage, with a switch from heat inducible in early life stages to constitutively and highly expressed in adults. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering the entire life cycle to better understand the adaptive response to thermal stress.

Fluctuations in the stress level of an organism are expressed in behavioural and molecular changes that can affect its ecology and survival. Our knowledge of thermal adaptations in deep-sea organisms is very limited, and this study investigates the critical thermal maximum (CTmax) and the heat-shock response (HSR) in the deep-sea crab Chaceon affinis commonly found in waters of the North East Atlantic. A mild but significant HSR in C. affinis was noted and one of the lowest CTmax known amongst Crustacea was revealed (27.5 °C at 0.1 MPa; 28.5 °C at 10 MPa). The thermal sensitivity of this species appears to be reduced at in situ pressure (10 MPa), given the slightly higher CTmax and the significant 3-fold induction of stress genes hsp70 form 1 and hsp70 form 2. Although C. affinis deep-sea habitat is characterized by overall low temperature this species appears to have retained its ability to induce a HSR. This capability may be linked with C. affinis' occasional exploitation of warmer and thermally instable hydrothermal vent fields, where it has been found foraging for food., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. The effect of selenium substitution by sulphur on the structural and physical properties of antiferromagnetic TlFe1.6+δSe2 has been investigated via neutron, x-ray and electron diffraction, and transport measurements. The √5a×√5a×c super-cell related to the iron vacancy ordering found in the pure TlFe1.6Se2 selenide is also present in the S-doped TlFe1.6+δ(Se1-xSx)2 compounds. Neutron scattering experiments show the occurrence of the same long range magnetic ordering in the whole series i.e. the 'block checkerboard' antiferromagnetic structure. In particular, this is the first detailed study where the crystal structure and the √5a×√5a antiferromagnetic structure is characterized by neutron powder diffraction for the pure TlFe1.6+δS2 sulphide over a large temperature range. We demonstrate the strong correlation between occupancies of the crystallographic iron sites, the level of iron vacancy ordering and the occurrence of block antiferromagnetism in the sulphur series. Introducing S into the Se sites also increases the Fe content in TlFe1.6+δ(Se1-xSx)2 which in turn leads to the disappearance of the Fe vacancy ordering at x = 0.5 ± 0.15. However, by reducing the nominal Fe content, the same √5a×√5a×c vacancy ordering and antiferromagnetic order can be recovered also in the pure TlFe1.6+δS2 sulphide with a simultaneous reduction in the Néel temperature from 435 K in the selenide TlFe1.75Se2 to 330 K in the sulphide TlFe1.5S2. The magnetic moment remains high at low temperature throughout the full substitution range, which contributes to the absence of superconductivity in these compounds.

The effect of selenium substitution by sulfur in the Tl(1-y)Fe(2-z)Se(2) antiferromagnet was studied by x-ray and electron diffraction, magnetization and transport measurements. Tl(0.8)Fe(1.5)(Se(1-x)S(x))(2) (nominal composition) solid solution was synthesized in the full x range (0 ≤ x(S) ≤ 1) using the sealed tube technique. No superconductivity was found down to 4.2 K in the series despite the fact that the optimal crystallographic parameters, determined by Rietveld refinements, are reached in the series (i.e. the Fe-(Se, S) interplane height and (Se, S)-Fe-(Se, S) angle for which the critical superconducting transition T(c) is usually maximal in pnictides). A quasi-full Tl site (y ~ 0.05) compared to significant alkaline deficiency (y = 0.2-0.3) in analogous A(1-y)Fe(2-z)Se(2) (A = K, Rb, Cs), and the resulting differences in iron valency, density of states and doping, are suggested as an explanation for this absence of superconductivity. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the existence of an ordered iron vacancies network in the samples of the Tl(0.8)Fe(1.5)(Se(1-x)S(x))(2) series in the form of the tetragonal √5a × √5a × c superstructure (I4/m). The Néel temperature (T(N)) indicating the onset of antiferromagnetism order in this √5a × √5a × c supercell is found to decrease from 450 K in the selenide (x = 0) to 330 K in the sulfide (x = 1). Finally, we demonstrate a direct linear relationship between T(N) and the Fe-(Se, S) bond length (or Fe-(Se, S) height).

We investigated the tolerance of adult specimens of the shallow-water shrimp Palaemonetes varians to sustained high hydrostatic pressure (10 MPa) across its thermal tolerance window (from 5 to 27 °C) using both behavioural (survival and activity) and molecular (hsp70 gene expression) approaches. To our knowledge, this paper reports the longest elevated hydrostatic pressure exposures ever performed on a shallow-water marine organism. Behavioural analysis showed a 100% survival rate of P. varians after 7 days at 10 MPa and 5 or 10 °C, whilst cannibalism was observed at elevated temperature (27 °C), suggesting no impairment of specific dynamic action. A significant interaction of pressure and temperature was observed for both behavioural and molecular responses. Elevated pressure was found to exacerbate the effect of temperature on the behaviour of the animals by reducing activity at low temperature and by increasing activity at high temperature. In contrast, only high pressure combined with low temperature increased the expression of hsp70 genes. We suggest that the impressive tolerance of P. varians to sustained elevated pressure may reflect the physiological capability of an ancestral species to colonise the deep sea. In the global warming context, we compared the thermal tolerance of several populations of the crustacean Gammarus pulex (Amphipoda: Gammaridae) along a latitudinal thermal gradient in the Rhône Valley. To disentangle the effect of regional (North vs. South) and local (site-specific) factors, the ecophysiological responses of populations were investigated at two levels of biological organisation: whole organism level considering body size [critical thermal maximum (CTmax), mean speed of locomotion (MS), time mobile (TM)] and organelle function level [mitochondrial respiratory control ratios (RCRs)]. CTmax and RCRs, but not MS and TM, revealed a significantly higher thermal tolerance in southern populations compared to northern ones. Nevertheless, temperatures ≥ 30°C were deleterious for all populations, suggesting that populations located in the warmer limit of the species distribution will be more threatened by climate change as they live closer to their upper thermal limits. The strong differences observed between populations indicate that the species-level thermal tolerance used in predictive models may not be informative enough to study the impact of global warming on species distributions. This work also reveals that an appropriate choice of indicators is essential to study the consequences of global warming since the response of organisms at the whole body level can be influenced by local conditions.

Electron beam of a transmission electron microscope can be used to alter the morphology of graphene nanoribbons and create atomically sharp edges required for applications of graphene in nanoelectronics. Using density-functional-theory-based simulations, we study the radiation hardness of graphene edges and show that the response of the ribbons to irradiation is not determined by the equilibrium energetics as assumed in previous experiments, but by kinetic effects associated with the dynamics of the edge atoms after impacts of energetic electrons. We report an unexpectedly high stability of armchair edges, comparable to that of pristine graphene, and demonstrate that the electron energy should be below ~50 keV to minimize the knock-on damage., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

The deep-sea vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata dominates the vagile megafauna at most vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This shrimp swarms around the hot end of the hydrothermal biotope where temperature can exceed its critical maximal temperature (33-38.5 ± 2°C). It may therefore be subjected to a thermal regime that is assumed to be stressful for animals. In this study, we used a global transcriptomic approach by constructing suppression subtractive hybridization cDNA libraries in order to identify specific up- and down-regulated genes in R. exoculata exposed to a severe heat stress (1h at 30°C). A total of 218 sequences representing potentially highly expressed genes in thermally stressed shrimp were obtained. Expression of 11 genes involved in various cell functions was quantified in control and heat shocked specimens using real-time PCR. Differential expression was observed for some specific genes such as mannose receptor C1, metalloprotease, histone H1, and hemocyanin with a strong up-regulation of several genes encoding heat shock proteins. These results suggest that R. exoculata is affected at both cellular and molecular levels by sustained exposure at 30°C. The annelid Paralvinella grasslei is a deep-sea vent endemic species that colonizes the wall of active chimneys. We report here the first data on its thermal biology based on in vivo experiments in pressurized aquaria. Our results demonstrate that P. grasslei survives a 30 min exposure at 30 degrees C, and suggest that the upper thermal limit of this species is slightly above this temperature. The first signs of stress were noticed at 30 degrees C, such as a significant increase in the animal's activity and the expression of HSP70 stress proteins. A preliminary investigation of the kinetics of stress protein expression surprisingly showed high levels of HSP70 proteins as late as 3.5 h after the heat shock. Finally, we provide here the first sequences for vent annelid hsp70 (P. grasslei, Hesiolyra bergi and Alvinella pompejana). These constitute valuable tools for future studies on the thermal biology of these annelids.

The shrimp Mirocaris fortunata is a hydrothermal vent species that is found at most vent-sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This endemic species is found across a hydrothermal gradient, with thermal conditions ranging from 2-9 degrees C in ambient seawater to fairly warm values of about 25 degrees C. We performed in vivo experiments on M. fortunata specimens originating from different sites and depths (850 m to 2300 m), both at atmospheric pressure and in pressurized aquaria, to characterise the upper thermal limits of this species. Atmospheric pressure results show that thermal physiology should be studied at each population's native pressure. At in situ pressure, shrimps from Menez Gwen (850 m depth) and Lucky Strike (1700 m depth) do not survive temperatures of 39 degrees C, and the 'loss of equilibrium' response suggests that their critical thermal maximum (Ctmax), is about 36+/-1 degrees C for both sites. This value is similar to those found for another vent shrimp, Rimicaris exoculata, which is thought to be a more temperature-resistant organism, so temperature resistance does not appear to be a crucial factor for explaining differences in distribution of shrimp species in a given vent site. Finally, the data for both vent shrimps are also comparable to those of other non-vent tropical caridean species.
