We investigate the driving mechanism leading to charge-density-wave transition in 1T-TiSe2 single crystals. Our results show that both exciton instability and phonons cooperate to develop the charge ordered phase below 202 K.

Abstract

By introducing derivative transient absorption spectroscopy, we obtain rate constants for backward and forward energy transfer between LH1 and LH2 complexes in purple bacterial membranes. We find that backward energy transfer is strongly reduced in membranes grown under low irradiation conditions, compared to high light grown ones. We conclude that backward energy transfer is managed actively by the bacteria to avoid LH1 exciton deactivation under high irradiation conditions. The analytical method is generally applicable to excitonically coupled systems.

Abstract

We report on coherent synthesis of outputs from two ultra-broadband optical parametric amplifiers; their timing is locked to sub-30-as by a balanced cross-correlator. Synthesised pulses have octave-spanning (500-1000 nm) spectra and nearly single-cycle 3.8-fs duration.

We temporally resolved energy transfer kinetics in an artificial light-harvesting dyad composed of a phthalocyanine covalently linked to a carotenoid. Upon carotenoid photo-excitation, energy transfers within ≈100fs (≈52% efficiency) to the phthalocyanine.

We demonstrate ultrafast coherent manipulation of the normal mode splitting in metal/molecular-aggregate nanostructures by real-time observation of Rabi oscillations between excitons and surface-plasmon-polaritons. Oscillations in exciton density on a 10-fs timescale control the Rabi splitting.

Abstract

We study an organic semiconductor microcavity operating in the strong-coupling regime using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. By probing the photo-induced absorption bands, we characterize the time-dependent population densities of states in the two polariton branches. We found evidence of a scattering process from the upper-branch cavity polaritons to the exciton reservoir having a rate of (150 fs)-1. A slower process similarly populates lower-branch polaritons with a rate of around (3ps)-1

Abstract

Non‐linear excitation microscopy offers several advantages for in‐vivo imaging compared to conventional confocal techniques. However, tissue penetration can still be an issue due to scattering and spherical aberrations induced on focused beams by the tissue. The use of low numerical aperture objectives to pass through the outer layers of the skin, together with high dioptric power microlenses implanted in‐vivo close to the observation volume, can be beneficial to the reduction of optical aberrations. Here, Fibroblast cell culture plano‐convex microlenses to be used for non‐linear imaging of biological tissue are developed and tested. The microlenses can be used as single lenses or multiplexed in an array. A thorough test of the lenses wavefront is reported together with the modulation transfer function and wavefront profile. Magnified fluorescence images can be retrieved through the microlenses coupled to commercial confocal and two‐photon excitation scanning microscopes. The signal‐to‐noise ratio of the images is not substantially affected by the use of the microlenses and the magnification can be adjusted by changing the relative position of the microlens array to the microscope objective and the immersion medium. These results are opening the way to the application of implanted micro‐optics for optical in‐vivo inspection of biological processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new technique is demonstrated for the study of vibrational coherence in organic molecules, based on stimulated emission pumping using a sequence of three pulses. The methodology is applied to a substituted oligo(phenylene vinylene) in solution, and a complex vibrational response consisting of contributions from a number of active normal modes is observed.

Abstract

1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ is host to coexisting strongly-correlated phases including charge density waves (CDWs) and an unusual Mott transition at low temperature. Here, we investigate coherent phonon oscillations in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ using a combination of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) and time-resolved reflectivity (TRR). Perturbation by a femtosecond laser pulse triggers a modulation of the valence band binding energy at the $\Gamma$-point, related to the Mott gap, that is consistent with the in-plane CDW amplitude mode frequency. By contrast, TRR measurements show a modulation of the differential reflectivity comprised of multiple frequencies belonging to the distorted CDW lattice modes. Comparison of the temperature dependence of coherent and spontaneous phonons across the CDW transition shows that the amplitude mode intensity is more easily suppressed during perturbation of the CDW state by the optical excitation compared to other modes. Our results clearly identify the relationship of the in-plane CDW amplitude mode with the Mott phase in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ and highlight the importance of lattice degrees of freedom., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material

Abstract

Understanding the complex interactions associated with charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom is fundamental for emerging applications of quantum materials. In this context, ultrafast optical spectroscopy systems are promising tools to study the origin of complex orders. Here, an intense optical pulse brings the system out-of-equilibrium, providing an excellent opportunity to distinguish the dynamics of each subsystem. Using ultrafast techniques, we investigated charge density wave (CDW) behavior in transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) after photo-excitation and during the relaxation time. To unravel the mechanisms underlying the correlations in CDW systems, we combined time resolved re ectivity (TRR) and time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TARPES). Our approach provides clear evidence of the phononic contribution to CDW phenomena in 1T-TiSe2.

In Broadband Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy, the intrinsic limit given by the laser shot noise is seldom reached due to the electronic noise of the front-end amplifier and the intensity fluctuations of the laser source. Abstract

We demonstrate quantum control of $^9$Be$^+$ ions directly implemented by an optical frequency comb. Based on numerical simulations of the relevant processes in $^9$Be$^+$ for different magnetic field regimes, we demonstrate a wide applicability when controlling the comb's spectral properties. We introduce a novel technique for the selective and efficient generation of a spectrally tailored narrow-bandwidth optical frequency comb near 313 nm. We experimentally demonstrate internal state control and internal-motional state coupling of $^9$Be$^+$ ions implemented by stimulated-Raman manipulation using a spectrally optimized optical frequency comb. Abstract

Minimizing the CEP jitter of isolated attosecond pulses (IAP) will be important for future applications. This jitter is experimentally and theoretically investigated and can be minimized when the driving pulse is near its Fourier limit but with slightly negative chirp. Thus, understanding and characterization of the CEP jitter of IAPs is a first step towards exact control of the electric field of IAP pulses.
