Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are by far the most common form of DNA polymorphism in a genome. The objectives of this study were to discover SNPs in common bean ( L.) by comparing sequences from coding and noncoding regions obtained from the GenBank and genomic DNA and to compare sequencing results with those obtained using single base extension (SBE) assays on the Luminex-100 system for use in high-throughput germplasm evaluation. We assessed the frequency of SNPs in 47 fragments of common bean DNA, using SBE as the evaluation methodology. We conducted a sequence analysis of 10 genotypes of cultivated and wild beans belonging to the Mesoamerican and Andean genetic pools of . For the 10 genotypes evaluated, a total of 20,964 bp of sequence were analyzed in each genotype and compared, resulting in the discovery of 239 SNPs and 133 InDels, giving an average SNP frequency of one per 88 bp and an InDel frequency of one per 157 bp. This is the equivalent of a nucleotide diversity (θ) of 6.27 × 10. Comparisons with the SNP genotypes previously obtained by direct sequencing showed that the SBE assays on the Luminex-100 were accurate, with 2.5% being miscalled and 1% showing no signal. These results indicate that the Luminex-100 provides a high-throughput system that can be used to analyze SNPs in large samples of genotypes both for purposes of assessing diversity and also for mapping studies.

Abstract Introduction Enteric methane (CH4) emissions are one of the largest components of the anthropogenic CH4 budget, and with accelerating climatic changes, there are calls to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Certain seaweeds fed as supplements can reduce enteric CH4 emissions from ruminant animals by as much as 80%; however, these studies have yet to analyze downstream impacts that may arise from the deposit of affected manures on pastures or agricultural fields. Materials and Methods Here we conducted a 28‐day soil and manure incubation utilizing manures collected from dairy cows in a seaweed feeding trial to analyze the impacts of manure on greenhouse gas fluxes and nutrient cycling. Cows were fed different diets with a control group (no seaweed supplementation), and a 3% and 6% by dry‐weight seaweed (Chondrus crispus) supplementation. Three soil moisture treatments were also tested, with a field moist capacity [67% gravimetric water content (GWC)], a drier group (50% GWC), and a saturated treatment (84% GWC). Results We found that manure from seaweed‐fed cows reduced emissions of carbon dioxide and had similar emissions of methane and nitrous oxide to the control. Higher moisture levels increased CH4 emissions and nitrous oxide emissions with CH4 emissions trending higher in seaweed supplements trending higher in. Inorganic nitrogen turnover varied more based on moisture levels than seaweed supplements, as did the magnitude of methane and nitrous oxide emissions. Total carbon and nitrogen mostly decreased except in the 3% seaweed supplementation, which increased carbon and nitrogen with a drop in C:N in the 50% GWC group. Conclusion Seaweed supplements may partially reduce climate impacts of manures from cows fed seaweed supplements or at least not cause harm or impact manure quality. Given feeds may reduce enteric CH4 emissions, they may be a part of a successful strategy to reduce climate impacts of cattle.

The intertidal zone often has varying levels of environmental stresses (desiccation, temperature, light) that result in highly stress-tolerant macrobiota occupying the upper zone while less tolerant species occupy the lower zone, but little comparative information is available for intertidal bacteria. Here we describe natural (unmanipulated) bacterial communities of three Fucus congeners (F. spiralis, high zone; F. vesiculosus, mid zone; F. distichus, low zone) as well as those of F. vesiculosus transplanted to the high zone (Dry and Watered treatments) and to the mid zone (Procedural Control) during summer in Maine (United States). We predicted that bacterial communities would be different among the differently zoned natural congeners, and that higher levels of desiccation stress in the high zone would cause bacterial communities of Dry transplants to become similar to F. spiralis, whereas relieving desiccation stress on Watered transplants would maintain the mid-zone F. vesiculosus bacterial community. Bacteria were identified as amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) after sequencing the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene. Microbiome composition and structure were significantly different between the differently zoned congeners at each tissue type (holdfasts, receptacles, vegetative tips). ASVs significantly associated with the mid-zone congener were frequently also present on the high-zone or low-zone congener, whereas overlap in ASVs between the high-zone and low-zone congeners was rare. Only 7 of 6,320 total ASVs were shared among tissues over all congeners and transplant treatments. Holdfast bacterial community composition of Dry transplants was not significantly different from that of F. spiralis, but Watered holdfast communities were significantly different from those of F. spiralis and not significantly different from those of procedural controls. Additional stressor(s) appeared important, because bacterial communities of Dry and Watered transplants were only marginally different from each other (p = 0.059). The relative abundance of Rhodobacteraceae associated with holdfasts generally correlated with environmental stress with highest abundance associated with F. spiralis and the two high-zone transplant treatments. These findings suggest that the abiotic stressors that shape distributional patterns of host species also affect their bacterial communities.

Context. Leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant smooth muscle tumors that may arise in any organ or tissue that contains smooth muscle, commonly within the gastrointestinal tract. They are most often found in the stomach, large and small intestines, and retroperitoneum. Primary pancreatic leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare, and to the best of our knowledge only 30 cases have been reported in the world literature since 1951. Our case represents the first to have a clear origin from the main pancreatic duct. Case Report. This case was diagnosed in a large, tertiary care center in Tampa, Florida. Pertinent information was obtained from chart review and interdepartmental collaboration. A mass in the tail of the pancreas was identified with large pleomorphic and spindle-shaped cells. Immunohistochemistry for vimentin, smooth muscle actin, and desmin was positive. All remaining immunohistochemical markers performed were negative. The tumor clearly originated from the pancreatic duct wall, filled and expanded the duct lumen, and was covered with a layer of benign biliary epithelium. Conclusion. Leiomyosarcoma of the pancreas is an extremely rare malignancy with few reported cases in the literature. The prognosis is poor, and treatment consists of alleviating symptoms and pain management. To our knowledge, this represents the first reported case demonstrating clear origin of a leiomyosarcoma from the pancreatic duct.

We believe the switch to a digital pathology (DP) workflow is imminent and it is essential to understand the economic implications of conversion. Many aspects of the adoption of DP will be disruptive and have a direct financial impact, both in short term costs, such as investment in equipment and personnel, and long term revenue potential, such as improved productivity and novel tests. The focus of this whitepaper is to educate pathologists, laboratorians and other stakeholders about the business and monetary considerations of converting to a digital pathology workflow. The components of a DP business plan will be thoroughly summarized, and guidance will be provided on how to build a case for adoption and implementation as well as a roadmap for transitioning from an analog to a digital pathology workflow in various laboratory settings. It is important to clarify that this publication is not intended to list prices although some financials will be mentioned as examples. The authors encourage readers who are evaluating conversion to a DP workflow to use this paper as a foundational guide for conducting a thorough and complete assessment while incorporating in current market pricing. Contributors to this paper analyzed peer-reviewed literature and data collected from various institutions, some of which are mentioned. Digital pathology will change the way we practice through facilitating patient access to expert pathology services and enabling image analysis tools and assays to aid in diagnosis, prognosis, risk stratification and therapeutic selection. Together, they will result in the delivery of valuable information from which to make better decisions and improve the health of patients.

Hydrogel scleral buckles are a hydrophilic explant that may lead to significant delayed complications. They can insidiously enlarge over decades and may mimic an orbital tumor or cyst. The authors report a case of an expansive hydrogel scleral explant in a previously eviscerated socket. A 58-year-old male presented with a 2-week history of severe pain in his left anophthalmic socket. And 31 years prior, he had sustained OS trauma and undergone a series of surgeries. Details of these procedures were unavailable; however, he had ultimately proceeded to globe evisceration. MRI revealed a large lobulated cyst-like orbital mass with internal calcification, which had expanded the left orbit with erosion of the medial wall, lateral wall, and roof. It extended to involve the ethmoid and frontal paranasal sinuses. He proceeded to a lateral orbitotomy, revealing the lesion to be an expanded hydrogel scleral buckle explant. Tear inflammatory cytokines are a novel biomarker studied in a range of ocular surface diseases, periorbital and orbital conditions. This single-centre prospective study between 2022 to 2024 aims to characterise tear cytokine profiles (Interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-2, IL-6, Interferon-γ [IFN-γ] and Tumour Necrosis Factor-α [TNF- α]) in orbital inflammatory disease (OID). OID patients had pre-treatment tear collection via micropipette, and cytokine analysis via multiplex bead array analysis. Thirteen healthy controls with no prior ophthalmic history were enrolled for comparison. Eighteen tear specimens from seventeen OID patients (6 males; mean age: 52.1±17.1-years-old), with one repeat tear sample taken for recurrent contralateral orbital inflammation. Diagnoses included non-specific orbital inflammation (47.1%), IgG4-related orbital disease (17.6%), orbital granulomatosis with polyangiitis (5.9%), giant cell arteritis (5.9%), herpes zoster ophthalmicus with orbital apex inflammation (5.9%), viral dacryoadenitis (5.9%), bacterial dacryoadenitis (5.9%) and orbital inflammation of uncertain cause (5.9%). Overall, OID patients, and specifically those with dacryoadenitis, had greater IL-6 levels compared to controls (P=0.038 and 0.002, respectively). OID with dacryoadenitis had higher IL-1β levels compared to those without (P=0.029). Higher IL-6 levels were observed in idiopathic dacryoadenitis compared to healthy controls (P= 0.008, respectively). There is significant variability in tear inflammatory cytokines profiles observed in OID. IL-1β and IL-6 levels may be non-specific markers of dacryoadenitis and may be particularly elevated in idiopathic dacryoadenitis. Tear cytokines may be affected by severity, localisation and pattern of inflammation. Introduction: Involutional ptosis repair is the signature procedure of Oculoplastic surgeons, with significant variation in approach. We aimed to assess the surgical approach currently used by BOPSS members for routine involutional ptosis repair., Methods: A prospective 7-question survey was carried out of BOPSS members, assessing for prevalence of anterior- versus posterior-approach, bilateral simultaneous versus staged surgery, and approach to clinical photography., Results: Of the respondents (n = 73), for routine involutional ptosis repair, 66% perform predominantly anterior-approach ptosis repair, 18% perform a mix of either anterior or posterior approach depending on the patient, and 16% perform predominantly posterior-approach ptosis repair. In bilateral ptosis, most respondents (84.9%) perform bilateral simultaneous surgery in one sitting, versus performing staged surgery (15.1%). Clinical photography is routinely obtained pre-operatively by most respondents (74%). Respondents varied in time post completion of training (CCT); the largest group (35.6%) had >15 years post certificate of (CCT) experience. Approach was not associated with experience., Conclusions: Anterior-approach ptosis repair remains the most common approach to ptosis repair in this cohort, though posterior approach is increasing in popularity. Background: Rotavirus was the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis among US children until vaccine introduction in 2006, after which, substantial declines in severe rotavirus disease occurred. We evaluated rotavirus vaccine effectiveness (VE) over 13 years (2009-2022)., Methods: We analyzed data from the New Vaccine Surveillance Network using a test-negative case-control design to estimate rotavirus VE against laboratory-confirmed rotavirus infections among children seeking care for acute gastroenteritis (≥3 diarrhea or ≥1 vomiting episodes within 24 hours) in the emergency department (ED) or hospital. Case-patients and control-patients were children whose stool specimens tested rotavirus positive or negative, respectively, by enzyme immunoassay or polymerase chain reaction assays. VE was calculated as (1-adjusted odds ratio)×100%. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated by multivariable unconditional logistic regression., Results: Among 16 188 enrolled children age 8 to 59 months, 1720 (11%) tested positive for rotavirus. Case-patients were less often vaccinated against rotavirus than control-patients (62% versus 88%). VE for receiving ≥1 dose against rotavirus-associated ED visits or hospitalization was 78% (95% confidence interval [CI] 75%-80%). Stratifying by a modified Vesikari Severity Score, VE was 59% (95% CI 49%-67%), 80% (95% CI 77%-83%), and 94% (95% CI 90%-97%) against mild, moderately severe, and very severe disease, respectively. Rotavirus vaccines conferred protection against common circulating genotypes (G1P[8], G2P[4], G3P[8], G9P[8], and G12[P8]). The optic nerve sheath is a rare site for schwannoma, to our knowledge 19 optic nerve sheath schwannoma (ONSS) cases have been reported. Difficulty can arise in diagnosis as imaging findings can be relatively non-specific. We describe a case of ONSS that mimicked orbital cavernous venous malformation pre-operatively. A 43-year-old woman presented with right subacute visual loss, reduced vision to 6/48 and signs of optic neuropathy. Endocapsular excision of the mass, which was adherent to the optic nerve, was accomplished from an endoscopic endonasal approach utilizing a 5-hand technique of retrocaruncular dissection. Histology showed spindle-shaped tumour cells with S100 positivity, consistent with ONSS. At 6 months post-operatively vision had improved to 6/6. We show that an endoscopic endonasal approach, augmented by transcaruncular retraction, can be utilized to excise ONSS with an excellent outcome. SoySNP50K and SoySNP6K are commonly used for soybean (Glycine max) genotyping. The SoySNP50K assay has been used to genetically analyze the entire USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection, while the SoySNP6K assay, containing a subset of 6000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from SoySNP50K, has been used for quantitative trait loci mapping of different traits. To meet the needs for genomic selection, selection of parents for crosses, and characterization of breeding populations, especially early selection of ideal offspring from thousands of lines, we developed two assays, SoySNP3K and SoySNP1K, containing 3072 and 1252 SNPs, respectively, based on SoySNP50K and SoySNP6K mark sets. These two assays also contained the trait markers reported or contributed by soybean breeders. The SNPs in the SoySNP3K are a subset from SoySNP6K, while the SNPs in the SoySNP1K are a subset from SoySNP3K. These SNPs were chosen to reduce the SNP number in the large linkage blocks while capturing as much of the haplotype diversity as possible. They are highly polymorphic and of high quality. The mean minor allele frequencies of the SNPs in the southern and northern US elites were 0.25 and 0.27 for SoySNP3K, respectively, and 0.29 and 0.33 for SoySNP1K. The selected SNPs are a valuable source for developing targeted amplicon sequencing assay or beadchip assay in soybean. SoySNP3K and SoySNP1K assays are commercialized by Illumina Inc. and AgriPlex Genomics, respectively. Myxoma is a rare tumor that can be challenging to diagnose, with imaging findings that can be nonspecific. We present a case of a 21-year-old man who presented with a subacute history of right visual deterioration and proptosis. Imaging showed a large right superomedial orbital mass of 43 × 31 × 24 mm, which enhanced heterogeneously and was eroding the adjacent orbital roof and medial wall. An excisional biopsy was performed via a lid crease approach under transorbital endoscopic guidance. We review the clinical, radiological, and histological characteristics of myxoma. Objectives: 1) Map FaME delivery across the UK, 2) explore and understand delivery of the FaME programme in practice., Methods: Sequential exploratory mixed methods. 1) survey of n=247 Postural Stability Instructor (PSIs) across the UK, 2) purposively sampled n=23 PSIs to take part in interviews. Quantitative data was described descriptively due to low sample size, and qualitative data coded using thematic analysis., Results: Instructors pre-dominantly delivered classes in a community-setting, were mostly White British females with a range of experience. Most respondents were exercise instructors, physiotherapists, or therapist assistants. Only 136 (55.1%) respondents currently delivered the programme. The essential components of the FaME programme that instructors did not implement routinely were backward chaining, floorwork and Tai Chi. Five main themes emerged from qualitative data: individual, delivery and set-up, evidence-based delivery, motivational strategies, and instructor-based factors. Most instructors reported fidelity to most components of FaME and shared barriers and facilitators to delivering classes., Conclusion: This study gives a UK overview of the implementation of FaME. Social perception relies on different sensory channels, including vision and audition, which are specifically important for judgements of appearance. Therefore, to understand multimodal integration in person perception, it is important to study both face and voice in a synchronized form. We introduce the Vienna Talking Faces (ViTaFa) database, a high-quality audiovisual database focused on multimodal research of social perception. ViTaFa includes different stimulus modalities: audiovisual dynamic, visual dynamic, visual static, and auditory dynamic. Stimuli were recorded and edited under highly standardized conditions and were collected from 40 real individuals, and the sample matches typical student samples in psychological research (young individuals aged 18 to 45). Stimuli include sequences of various types of spoken content from each person, including German sentences, words, reading passages, vowels, and language-unrelated pseudo-words. Recordings were made with different emotional expressions (neutral, happy, angry, sad, and flirtatious). ViTaFa is freely accessible for academic non-profit research after signing a confidentiality agreement form via https://osf.io/9jtzx/ and stands out from other databases due to its multimodal format, high quality, and comprehensive quantification of stimulus features and human judgements related to attractiveness. Background: We investigated Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) families for variation in peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and perfusion, and associated optic nerve dysfunction., Method: A group of LHON-affected patients (n=12) and their asymptomatic maternal relatives (n=16) underwent examination including visual acuity (VA), visual-evoked-potential and optic nerve imaging including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL). A control sample was also examined (n=10). The software imageJ was used to measure perfusion by assessing vessel density (VD), and statistical software 'R' was used to analyse data., Results: The LHON-affected group (n=12) had significantly reduced peripapillary VD (median 7.9%, p=0.046). Overall, the LHON asymptomatic relatives (n=16) had no significant change in peripapillary VD (p=0.166), though three eyes had VD which fell below the derived normal range at 6% each, with variable VA from normal to blindness; LogMAR median 0, range 0-2.4. In contrast, RNFL thickness was significantly reduced in the LHON-affected group (median 51 µm, p=0.003), and in asymptomatic relatives (median 90 µm, p=0.01), compared with controls (median 101 µm). RNFL thinning had greater specificity compared with reduced perfusion for optic nerve dysfunction in asymptomatic carriers (92% vs 66%)., Conclusion: Overall, reduced peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer perfusion was observed in those affected by LHON but was not reduced in their asymptomatic relatives, unlike RNFL thinning which was significantly reduced in both groups versus controls. Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of hospitalization in US infants. Accurate estimates of severe RSV disease inform policy decisions for RSV prevention., Methods: We conducted prospective surveillance for children <5 years old with acute respiratory illness from 2016 to 2020 at 7 pediatric hospitals. We interviewed parents, reviewed medical records, and tested midturbinate nasal ± throat swabs by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for RSV and other respiratory viruses. We describe characteristics of children hospitalized with RSV, risk factors for ICU admission, and estimate RSV-associated hospitalization rates., Results: Among 13 524 acute respiratory illness inpatients <5 years old, 4243 (31.4%) were RSV-positive; 2751 (64.8%) of RSV-positive children had no underlying condition or history of prematurity. The average annual RSV-associated hospitalization rate was 4.0 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.8-4.1) per 1000 children <5 years, was highest among children 0 to 2 months old (23.8 [95% CI: 22.5-25.2] per 1000) and decreased with increasing age. Higher RSV-associated hospitalization rates were found in premature versus term children (rate ratio = 1.95 [95% CI: 1.76-2.11]). Risk factors for ICU admission among RSV-positive inpatients included: age 0 to 2 and 3 to 5 months (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.97 [95% CI: 1.54-2.52] and aOR = 1.56 [95% CI: 1.18-2.06], respectively, compared with 24-59 months), prematurity (aOR = 1.32 [95% CI: 1.08-1.60]) and comorbid conditions (aOR = 1.35 [95% CI: 1.10-1.66])., Conclusions: Younger infants and premature children experienced the highest rates of RSV-associated hospitalization and had increased risk of ICU admission. Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) enabled by Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) has potential to change future transport systems. The findings from previous studies suggest that these technologies will improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and delays. Furthermore, these CAVs will be safer compared to existing vehicles. As these vehicles may have the ability to travel at a higher speed and with shorter headways, it has been argued that infrastructure-based measures are required to optimise traffic flow and road user comfort. One of these measures is the use of a dedicated lane for CAVs on urban highways and arterials and constitutes the focus of this research. As the potential impact on safety is unclear, the present study aims to evaluate the safety impacts of dedicated lanes for CAVs. A calibrated and validated microsimulation model developed in AIMSUN was used to simulate and produce safety results. These results were analysed with the help of the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM). The model includes human-driven vehicles (HDVs), 1st generation and 2nd generation autonomous vehicles (AVs) with different sets of parameters leading to different movement behaviour. The model uses a variety of cases in which a dedicated lane is provided at different type of lanes (inner and outer) of highways to understand the safety effects. The model also tries to understand the minimum required market penetration rate (MPR) of CAVs for a better movement of traffic on dedicated lanes. It was observed in the models that although at low penetration rates of CAVs (around 20%) dedicated lanes might not be advantageous, a reduction of 53% to 58% in traffic conflicts is achieved with the introduction of dedicated lanes in high CAV MPRs. In addition, traffic crashes estimated from traffic conflicts are reduced up to 48% with the CAVs. The simulation results revealed that with dedicated lane, the combination of 40-40-20 (i.e., 40% human-driven - 40% 1st generation AVs- 20% 2nd generation AVs) could be the optimum MPR for CAVs to achieve the best safety benefits. Purpose: To evaluate socket outcomes of enucleation for uveal melanoma., Methods: This study was a retrospective chart review conducted in December 2022 of all patients who underwent enucleation surgery for uveal melanoma between 2010 and 2015 in the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, to evaluate socket outcomes including completion of revision surgery, type of surgery, and completion of multiple revision surgeries, and potential associations., Results: Between June 2010 and December 2015, 72 patients underwent enucleation for uveal melanoma in the ocular oncology service, including 25 females and 47 males, mean age 65, range 11-91 years old. There were 68 primary enucleations and 4 secondary enucleations. Complete follow-up data was available for mean 4 years, range 1-11 years. Fourteen patients underwent further surgery, including one exenteration for local recurrence. Oculoplastic surgery (n = 6, 8%), implant exposure repair (n = 3, 6%), and orbit volume expanding surgery (n = 4, 6%) were also performed. Eight patients (11%) underwent one further surgery and five patients (7%) underwent a series of procedures. There was a significant association with younger age at enucleation (age <65) with undergoing further surgery (p = 0.03, Fisher's Exact Test (FET)), and also an association of younger age with undergoing multiple further surgeries (p = 0.02, FET). There was no association found with other predictor variables, including primary versus secondary enucleation status. Most patients (75%) with PESS underwent more than one surgery., Conclusion: Post enucleation surgery 82% of patients did not undergo further surgery, but younger patients were more likely to undergo anophthalmic socket revision or oculoplastic surgery. The Skin and UV Neoplasia Transplant Risk Assessment Calculator (SUNTRAC) is a tool that can be used to decide when to first screen for skin cancer in organ transplant recipients (OTRs). The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of this tool in thoracic OTRs. Based on data from patient files, the OTRs were categorized into four risk groups according to the SUNTRAC tool. The time of the first post-transplant skin cancer in each OTR was recorded. The proportion of OTRs with post-transplant skin cancer in the low-, medium-, high- and very high-risk groups was 0%, 28.3%, 58.3% and 100%, respectively. Breeding for increased protein without a reduction in oil content in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a challenge for soybean breeders but an expected goal. Many efforts have been made to develop new soybean varieties with high yield in combination with desirable protein and/or oil traits. An elite line, R05-1415, was reported to be high yielding, high protein, and low oil. Several significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) for protein and oil were reported in this line, but many of them were unstable across environments or genetic backgrounds. Thus, a new study under multiple field environments using the Infinium BARCSoySNP6K BeadChips was conducted to detect and confirm stable genomic loci for these traits. Genetic analyses consistently detected a single major genomic locus conveying these two traits with remarkably high phenotypic variation explained (R 2 ), varying between 24.2% and 43.5%. This new genomic locus is located between 25.0 and 26.7 Mb, distant from the previously reported QTL and did not overlap with other commonly reported QTL and the recently cloned gene Glyma.20G085100. Homolog analysis indicated that this QTL did not result from the paracentric chromosome inversion with an adjacent genomic fragment that harbors the reported QTL. The pleiotropic effect of this QTL could be a challenge for improving protein and oil simultaneously; however, a further study of four candidate genes with significant expressions in the seed developmental stages coupled with haplotype analysis may be able to pinpoint causative genes. Background: One of the core aims of the European Union of Medical Specialists is to harmonize training across Europe by creating European Training Requirements for all medical specialties including Ophthalmology. The theoretical part is already defined by the EBO, however as ophthalmology also includes surgical skills, we herein propose a surgical minimum curriculum for ophthalmology residents in Europe., Methods: National and international ophthalmic training curricula which are publicly available in English were reviewed and compared. The final proposal was created from 5 criteria: 1. Disease prevalence; 2. Patient safety; 3. Case-trainee ratio; 4. Skill transfer; and 5. Technical difficulty., Results: In total 7 different training curricula from across the world were compared. Among the surgical procedures, cataract surgery has the highest median number of procedures required to be completed during residency: 86 procedures (50-350). Followed by oculoplastics: 28 procedures (10-40) and panretinal photocoagulation: 27.5 procedures (10-49) Full procedural competence is proposed in 9 surgical skills, including YAG laser posterior capsulotomy, retinal argon laser, intravitreal injection, corneal foreign body removal, removal of corneal sutures, facial and periocular laceration repair, eyelid laceration repair, minor eyelid procedures, and punctal occlusion. These procedures are deemed essential and feasible for all ophthalmology residents in Europe to perform independently upon completion of their training., Conclusion: This proposal should be regarded as a recommendation based on comparable surgical curricula in use worldwide to establish standards across European countries and may serve as valuable insight to those responsible for compiling ETRs for ophthalmology, or their national curriculums., (© 2023. Introduction: There is a growing interest in utilizing seaweed in ruminant diets for mitigating enteric methane (CH 4 ) emissions while improving animal health. Chondrus crispus is a red seaweed that grows in the Gulf of Maine (United States) and has shown to suppress CH 4 production in vitro . Organic dairy producers in Maine are currently feeding seaweed due to herd health promoting benefits. However, large-scale adoption depends on technical and financial factors, as well as validation from pilot studies., Methods: A survey was developed to identify barriers and drivers towards the adoption of CH 4 -reducing algal-based feeds. Concurrently, a randomized complete block design study was conducted to investigate the effect of C. crispus on enteric CH 4 emissions and milk production in a typical Maine organic dairy farm. Twenty-two organically certified Holstein and Jersey cows averaging 29 ± 6.8 kg of milk/d and 150 ± 69 days in milk, were blocked and randomly assigned to a control diet without C. crispus (0CC), or with 6% [dry matter (DM) basis] C. crispus (6CC). Samples were collected on the last week of the 2-wk covariate period, and wk 3, 5, 8, and 10 after initiation of treatments for a total of 12 weeks. Gaseous emissions were measured using a GreenFeed unit. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS with repeated measures over time., Results: All survey respondents ( n = 35; 54% response rate) were familiar with seaweeds as feed, and 34% were already users. Producers who were willing to pay 0.64 USD/cow/d on average for a CH 4 -reducing algal-based feed, also stated the need for co-benefits in terms of cattle health and performance as a requirement for adoption. Feeding 6CC decreased enteric CH 4 production by 13.9% compared with 0CC (401 vs. 466 g/d). Further, milk yield (mean = 27.1 kg/d), CH 4 intensity (mean = 15.2 g of CH 4 /kg of energy corrected milk), and concentrations and yields of milk fat and true protein were not affected by treatments., Discussion: Producer receptiveness to CH 4 -reducing algal-based feeds will not only be dependent on purchase price, but also on co-benefits and simplicity of integration into existing feed practices. Feeding C. crispus at 6% of the diet DM decreased CH 4 production in dairy cows by 13.9% without negative effects on milk yield and composition. Some multimodal signals-that is, occurring in more than one sensory modality-appear to carry additional information which is not present when component signals are presented separately. To understand the function of male ring dove's (Streptopelia risoria) multimodal courtship, we used audiovisual playback of male displays to investigate female response to stimuli differing in their audiovisual timing. From natural courtship recordings, we created a shifted stimulus where audio was shifted relative to video by a fixed value and a jittered stimulus, where each call was moved randomly along the visual channel. We presented 3 groups of females with the same stimulus type, that is, control, shifted, and jittered, for 7 days. We recorded their behavior and assessed pre- and post-test blood estradiol concentration. We found that playback exposure increased estradiol levels, confirming that this technique can be efficiently used to study doves' sexual communication. Additionally, chasing behavior (indicating sexual stimulation) increased over experimental days only in the control condition, suggesting a role of multimodal timing on female response. This stresses the importance of signal configuration in multimodal communication, as additional information is likely to be contained in the temporal association between modalities., (© 2022 The Authors. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring mucopolysaccharide that, due to its inherent bioactivity and extracellular matrix-like structure, has the potential to be utilised extensively in tissue engineering. However, this glycosaminoglycan lacks the properties required for cellular adhesion and photo-crosslinking by UV light, which significantly hinders this polymers applicability. This research presents a method for modifying hyaluronic acid via thiolation and methacrylation to generate a novel photo-crosslinkable polymer with improved physicochemical properties, biocompatibility and the potential to customize biodegradability according to the ratio of monomers used. A decrease in stiffness proportional to increasing thiol concentration was observed when testing the compressive strength of hydrogels. Conversely, it was noted that the storage moduli of hydrogels increased proportionally to thiol concentration indicating a greater degree of cross-linking with the addition of thiol. The addition of thiol to HA increased the biocompatibility of the material in both neuronal and glial cell lines and improved the degradability of methacrylated HA. The heritability of intelligence or general cognitive ability is estimated at 41% and 66% in children and adults respectively. Many rare copy number variants are associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions (ND-CNV), including schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders, and may contribute to the observed variability in cognitive ability. Here, we reviewed studies of intelligence quotient or cognitive function in ND-CNV carriers, from both general population and clinical cohorts, to understand the cognitive impact of ND-CNV in both contexts and identify potential genotype-specific cognitive phenotypes. We reviewed aggregate studies of sets ND-CNV broadly linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions, and genotype-first studies of a subset of 12 ND-CNV robustly associated with schizophrenia and autism. Cognitive impacts were observed across ND-CNV in both general population and clinical cohorts, with reports of phenotypic heterogeneity. Evidence for ND-CNV-specific impacts were limited by a small number of studies and samples sizes. A comprehensive understanding of the cognitive impact of ND-CNVs would be clinically informative and could identify potential educational needs for ND-CNV carriers. This review describes recent advances and current trends in fire debris analysis from 2014 to 2021. Onsite analytical techniques used for fire scene investigation, identifying samples of interest for later analysis as well as onsite confirmatory techniques are examined. Laboratory techniques are reviewed both from a perspective of instrumentation and data analysis. Advances in analytical techniques include GC x GC-TOFMS, DART-MS, HS-GC-IMS. New and emerging methods of data analysis including those using machine learning are assessed. Each aspect is essential for forensic scientists to obtain the correct conclusion when collecting, examining, analysing, and interpreting fire debris. We present a case of bilateral interstitial keratitis leading to perforation in a woman with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). A woman in her mid-20s with a history of HS and Grave's disease was referred to the corneal service with loss of vision and pain in both eyes since childhood. She was found to have circumferential thinning and steepening affecting her peripheral cornea bilaterally. Corrected distance visual acuity with spectacles was in the right eye 6/7.5, and in the left 6/30, with local thinnest area of 209 and 217 µm in the right and left eyes, respectively. She experienced recurring episodes of redness and irritation, and perforation occurred. The corneal perforation was managed with cyanoacrylate glueing, followed by a local conjunctival flap. Systemic immunosuppression with mycophenolate mofetil and adalimumab was commenced, with improvement after 18 months of treatment. Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) affects a minority of carriers of causative mitochondrial DNA mutations. We investigated a cohort of patients with LHON, including m.11778G>A, m.3460G>A, m.14484T>C and DNAJC30 c.152A>G variants, and their asymptomatic maternal carrier relatives for additional potential associations with vision loss. We assessed visual acuity, optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL), visually evoked potential including P-100 latency, and full mitochondrial genome sequencing. Comparison was made with a reference standard for OCT; European Descent, Heidelberg Engineering ©; and electrophysiology measurements with in-house normative ranges. RNFL was thinned overall in LHON patients (n = 12); median global RNFL −54 μm in the right eye (RE) and −50 μm in the left eye (LE) versus normal, and was found to be normal overall in asymptomatic carriers at +1 μm RE and −2 μm LE (n = 16). In four asymptomatic carriers there was RNFL thinning found either unilaterally or bilaterally; these cases were associated with isolated delay in P-100 latency (25%), delay and reduced visual acuity (50%), or reduced visual acuity without P-100 latency delay (25%). Optic nerve dysfunction was associated with mitochondrial haplogroup H and HV, versus non-H haplogroups, in the asymptomatic carriers (Fisher’s exact test, p = 0.05). Our findings suggest that optic nerve abnormalities may be identified in asymptomatic LHON mitochondrial mutation carriers, which may be associated with optic nerve dysfunction. For asymptomatic carriers these findings were associated with mitochondrial haplogroup H and HV.

Purpose: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia may predispose to thromboembolic disease, including after the acute phase. We report on a unique case of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) occurring eight months after diagnosis of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia in a likely case of post-COVID-19 syndrome., Case Report: A 42-year-old man developed blurred vision in his right eye eight months after symptoms of pneumonia. He had no underlying medical conditions, but experienced exertional chest pain since diagnosis of COVID-19 was confirmed by detection of SARS-CoV-2 on nasopharyngeal swab and was also seeing cardiology for management of myocarditis. His best-corrected visual acuity on snellen chart testing was reduced to 6/18 in the affected right eye, and dilated fundal examination revealed a non-ischaemic CRVO., Conclusion: The thromboembolic complications of COVID-19 may extend to CRVO, which in this case presented months after onset of symptoms of pneumonia, in association with myocarditis.

Vocal and facial cues typically co-occur in natural settings, and multisensory processing of voice and face relies on their synchronous presentation. Psychological research has examined various facial and vocal cues to attractiveness as well as to judgements of sexual dimorphism, health, and age. However, few studies have investigated the interaction of vocal and facial cues in attractiveness judgments under naturalistic conditions using dynamic, ecologically valid stimuli. Here, we used short videos or audio tracks of females speaking full sentences and used a manipulation of voice pitch to investigate cross-modal interactions of voice pitch on facial attractiveness and related ratings. Male participants had to rate attractiveness, femininity, age, and health of synchronized audio-video recordings or voices only, with either original or modified voice pitch. We expected audio stimuli with increased voice pitch to be rated as more attractive, more feminine, healthier, and younger. If auditory judgements cross-modally influence judgements of facial attributes, we additionally expected the voice pitch manipulation to affect ratings of audiovisual stimulus material. We tested 106 male participants in a within-subject design in two sessions. Analyses revealed that voice recordings with increased voice pitch were perceived to be more feminine and younger, but not more attractive or healthier. When coupled with video recordings, increased pitch lowered perceived age of faces, but did not significantly influence perceived attractiveness, femininity, or health. Understanding consciousness is a major frontier in the natural sciences. However, given the nuanced and ambiguous sets of conditions regarding how and when consciousness appears to manifest, it is also one of the most elusive topics for investigation. In this context, we argue that research in empirical aesthetics-specifically on the experience of art-holds strong potential for this research area. We suggest that empirical aesthetics of art provides a more exhaustive description of conscious perception than standard laboratory studies or investigations of the less artificial, more ecological perceptual conditions that dominate this research, leading to novel and better suited designs for natural science research on consciousness. Specifically, we discuss whether empirical aesthetics of art could be used for a more adequate picture of an observer's attributions in the context of conscious perception. We point out that attributions in the course of conscious perception to (distal) objects versus to media (proximal objects) as origins of the contents of consciousness are typically swift and automatic. However, unconventional or novel object-media relations used in art can bring these attributions to the foreground of the observer's conscious reflection. This is the reason that art may be ideally suited to study human attributions in conscious perception compared to protocols dedicated only to the most common and conventional perceptual abilities observed under standard laboratory or "natural"/ecological conditions alone. We also conclude that art provides an enormous stock of such unconventional and novel object-media relations, allowing more systematic falsification of tentative conclusions about conscious perception versus research protocols covering more conventional (ecological) perception only.
