A deep ultraviolet femtosecond laser was employed to turn phase and birefringence errors in silica planar lightwave circuits. A permanent refractive index change of ∼3.8 × 10-4 and a birefringence change of 1.0 × 10-4 were induced in hydrogen-free Mach-Zehnder planar waveguide circuits. The ultrafast laser enhances the ultraviolet photo- sensitivity response in silica waveguides by two orders of magnitude greater than that of a nanosecond 248 nm KrF excimer laser. Even though the high melting point of sapphire fibers offers the potential for applications in temperatures as high as 1800 °C, the absence of an effective and stable cladding has been a major hurdle in utilizing single-crystal fibers for harsh environment sensing applications. This work discusses the development of a high temperature stable magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl 2 O 4) cladding for sapphire fibers using wet chemical methods. Stability of spinel coatings on sapphire substrates has been demonstrated up to 1400 °C. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate clear film-substrate boundary, suggesting very limited solid-state reaction. 125 µm sapphire optical fiber with 340 nm thick spinel cladding exhibited improved protection from contamination under different application relevant gas environments at elevated temperatures. The primary challenge in diagnosing ocular diseases in canines based on images lies in developing an accurate and reliable machine learning method capable of effectively segmenting and diagnosing these conditions through image analysis. Addressing this challenge, the study focuses on developing and rigorously evaluating a machine learning model for diagnosing ocular diseases in canines, employing the U-Net neural network architecture as a foundational element of this investigation. Through this extensive evaluation, the authors identified a model that exhibited good reliability, achieving prediction scores with an Intersection over Union (IoU) exceeding 80 %, as measured by the Jaccard index. The research methodology encompassed a systematic exploration of various neural network backbones (VGG, ResNet, Inception, EfficientNet) and the U-Net model, combined with an extensive model selection process and an in-depth analysis of a custom training dataset consisting of historical images of different medical symptoms and diseases in dog eyes. The results indicate a fairly high degree of accuracy in the segmentation and diagnosis of ocular diseases in canines, demonstrating the model's effectiveness in real-world applications. In conclusion, this potentially makes a significant contribution to the field by utilizing advanced machine-learning techniques to develop image-based diagnostic routines in veterinary ophthalmology. The development of advanced distributed optical fiber sensing systems that are capable of performing accurate and spatially resolved multiparameter measurements is of great interest to a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a wavelength diversity based advanced distributed optical fiber sensor system to accomplish multiparameter sensing while greatly enhancing measurement accuracy. A suite of deep neural network (DNN) algorithms are developed and verified for data denoising, rapid Brillouin frequency shift estimation, and vibration data event classification. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed advanced wavelength diversity distributed fiber sensor system assisted by DNN for simultaneous, independent measurements of static strain, temperature, and acoustic vibrations over a 25 km long sensing fiber at 3 m spatial resolution. The horse is central to many Indigenous cultures across the American Southwest and the Great Plains. However, when and how horses were first integrated into Indigenous lifeways remain contentious, with extant models derived largely from colonial records. We conducted an interdisciplinary study of an assemblage of historic archaeological horse remains, integrating genomic, isotopic, radiocarbon, and paleopathological evidence. Archaeological and modern North American horses show strong Iberian genetic affinities, with later influx from British sources, but no Viking proximity. Horses rapidly spread from the south into the northern Rockies and central plains by the first half of the 17th century CE, likely through Indigenous exchange networks. They were deeply integrated into Indigenous societies before the arrival of 18th-century European observers, as reflected in herd management, ceremonial practices, and culture.

This paper studies the use of MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) as a super-resolution algorithm to improve demodulation results for intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (IFPI) sensor arrays. Through distinction between noise and signal subspaces in an observation matrix, this paper shows that a 38-fold improvement in the full width at half maximum (FWHM) estimation of IFPI optical path differences (OPD) can be achieved using this algorithm. Based on this improved method, this paper demonstrates that a tunable laser with a 1.3-nm tuning range can achieve the same sensor demodulation performance as a tunable laser with a 50-nm tuning range if a conventional Fourier transform-based algorithm is used. This paper presents a new approach to analyzing optical signals produced by multiple multiplexed interferometers with similar OPDs with potential applications for both single-mode and multiple-mode devices.

The effects of chloridazon (Ch) and its metabolite chloridazon-desphenyl (Ch-D) at the environmentally relevant concentrations of 0.45 µg/L and 2.7 µg/L on signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus were assessed in a 30-day exposure followed by a 15-day depuration period. Locomotion, biochemical haemolymph profile, oxidative and antioxidant parameters, and histopathology were evaluated. Crayfish exposed to Ch at 0.45 µg/L and 2.7 µg/L showed significantly (p < 0.01) higher CAT activity and GSH level in hepatopancreas and gill compared to controls. The concentration of Ch at 2.7 µg/L was associated with significantly (p < 0.01) higher levels of GLU, LACT, ALT, AST in haemolymph compared to controls. Chloridazon-desphenyl exposure at both tested concentrations caused significantly higher (p < 0.01) GLU, LACT, ALT, AST, NH 3 , and Ca in haemolymph; lipid peroxidation (TBARS) levels in hepatopancreas; and CAT activity and GSH level in hepatopancreas and gill. Alterations of structure including focal dilatation of tubules, increased number of fibrillar cells, and haemocyte infiltration in the interstitium were observed with 2.7 µg/L Ch and with both Ch-D exposures. Locomotion patterns did not vary significantly among groups. A 15-day recovery period was insufficient to restore normal physiological parameters in exposed groups. The effects of chloridazon exposure at concentrations of 2.7 μg/L (maximal real environmental concentration in the Czech Republic), 27 μg/L, 135 μg/L and 270 μg/L on early life stages of marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) were evaluated. Significantly higher glutathione S-transferase activity and reduced glutathione level was observed at all tested concentrations of chloridazon compared with the control. Chloridazon in concentrations 27, 135 and 270 μg/L caused delay ontogenetic development and slower growth. Histopathological changes in hepathopancreas were found in two highest tested concentrations (135 μg/L and 270 μg/L). The effects of the herbicide metazachlor and its major metabolite metazachlor OA at two concentrations, including environmentally relevant concentrations of metazachlor (0.0115 µmol/l and 0.0790 µmol/l) and metazachlor OA (0.0117 µmol/l and 0.0805 µmol/l), respectively, were evaluated on early ontogeny, growth, behaviour, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme levels, histology, and mortality of marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis. Both tested concentrations of metazachlor and metazachlor OA were associated with significantly lower growth and delayed ontogenetic development compared to controls. Exposure of metazachlor at 0.0115 µmol/l and metazachlor OA at 0.0117 µmol/l and 0.0805 µmol/l resulted in significantly lower activity of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione s-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), and reduced glutathione (GSH) compared with control and resulted in gill anomalies ranging from wall thinning to focal disintegration of branchial structure. Metazachlor at the environmentally relevant concentration of 0.0790 µmol/l was associated with significant alterations of crayfish distance moved and walking speed. The potential risk associated with metazachlor use in agriculture related to effects on non-target aquatic organisms.

Increasing production of energy crops in Europe, mainly maize and rapeseed, has altered patterns of pesticide use in recent decades. The long-term effects of S-metolachlor (S-M) and of its metabolite metolachlor OA (M-OA) at the environmentally relevant concentration of 4.2 μg L -1 and at 42 μg L -1 (ten-fold concentration) on marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) were evaluated in a 28-day exposure and after a subsequent 28-day recovery period. Indicators assessed were behaviour; biochemical haemolymph profile; oxidative and antioxidant parameters of gill, hepatopancreas, and muscle; and histology of hepatopancreas and gill. Results showed biochemical haemolymph profile (lactate, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, inorganic phosphate), lipid peroxidation in hepatopancreas, and antioxidant parameters (catalase, reduced glutathione, glutathione S-transferase) of hepatopancreas and gill of crayfish exposed to S-M and M-OA to significantly differ from controls (P < 0.01). Antioxidant biomarker levels remained different from controls after a 28-day recovery period. Differences in behaviour including speed of movement and velocity, and histopathological damage to gill and hepatopancreas were associated with S-M and M-OA exposure and persisted after 28 days in S-M- and M-OA-free water. Results suggest harmful effects of low concentrations of S-M and its metabolite M-OA on non-target organisms and provide information for assessing their effects at environmentally relevant concentrations., (Copyright © 2019. Background: UV exposure is strongly associated with the incidence of non melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), both basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The aim of our study was to analyze risk perception, UV exposure, preventive habits, and occupation in 126 subjects affected by NMSC and 187 controls., Methods: Consecutive cases with incident NMSC were recruited in Dermatologic Unit at University of Trieste; controls were recruited in Unit of Occupational Medicine. All had a medical examination to define Fitzpatrick skin type and skin lesions, and filled a standardized questionnaire on sun exposure habits, sun protection, occupational exposures, and sunburns in adulthood and childhood., Results: In multivariate regression analysis, NMSC resulted significantly associated with age (OR: 1.03; 95% CI 1.01-1.05), with a positive feeling for tan (OR: 1.10; 95% CI 1.01-1.20), and sunbath numbers per year (OR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.001-1.03). A protective effect was demonstrated for Fitzpatrick phototypes III-IV compared to I and II (OR: 0.31; 95% CI: 0.18-0.55), sunscreen use (OR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.22-0.58), and risk perception (OR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97-0.99). In univariate analysis, we demonstrated an increased risk for fishermen, sailors, and lifeguards (OR: 4.3; 95% CI: 1.1-16.4); foundry and metallurgy workers (OR: 5.58; 95% CI: 1.14-27.3); and mechanics, fixers, and welders (OR: 8.2; 95% CI: 1.76-37.9)., Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that protective behavior must be implemented in people living in Trieste. Workers must avoid direct UV exposure and must use protective equipment. The effects of s-metolachlor chronic exposure at concentrations of 1.1 μg/L (maximal real environmental concentration in the Czech Republic), 11 μg/L (environmental relevant concentration) and 110 μg/L on early life stages of marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) was evaluated under laboratory conditions. All s-metolachlor exposures resulted in higher mortality, delay ontogenetic development with accompanied slower growth and excited behaviour (increase of total distance moved and walking speed). Significantly lower superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase activity and reduced glutathione level was observed at two higher tested concentrations (11 and 110 μg/L) of s-metolachlor compared with the control. S-metolachlor in concentrations 110 μg/L showed alteration of the tubular system of hepatopancreas including focal disintegration of tubular epithelium and notable reduction in epithelial cells number, especially B-cells. In conclusion, potential risk associated with using of s-metolachlor in agriculture, due to effects on non-target aquatic organisms as documented on early life stages of marbled crayfish in this study, should be taken into account., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. The metolachlor OA is a metabolite of herbicide metolachlor and s-metolachlor. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect metolachlor OA on early life stages of marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis). The early life stages of marbled crayfish were exposed for 45 days to three concentrations of metolachlor OA: 4.2 μg/L (environmentally relevant concentration, E1), 42 μg/L (E2) and 420 μg/L (E3) under laboratory conditions. The effects were assessed on the basis of mortality, growth, ontogenetic development, behaviour, oxidative stress, antioxidant biomarkers and histopathology. Metolachlor OA caused significantly lower growth, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione s-transferase activity in all tested concentrations. Metolachlor OA in higher concentrations (42 and 420 μg/L) resulted in significantly delayed ontogenetic development, lower reduced glutathione level and lipid peroxidation. Metolachlor OA has not significant effect on behaviour (activity, total distance moved and walking speed). Histological examination revealed alteration of hepatopancreas and gills in crayfish exposed to two higher tested concentrations. Hepatopancreas reflected histomorphological structural changes of individual cell types. Changes of gills included focal hemocytic infiltration together with enlargement of intralamellar space packed with granular substance. This paper reports a technique to enhance the magnitude and high-temperature stability of Rayleigh back-scattering signals in silica fibers for distributed sensing applications. With femtosecond laser radiation, more than 40-dB enhancement of Rayleigh backscattering signal was generated in silica fibers using 300-nJ laser pulses at 250 kHz repetition rate. The laser-induced Rayleigh scattering defects were found to be stable from the room temperature to 800 °C in hydrogen gas. The Rayleigh scatter at high temperatures was correlated to the formation and modification of nanogratings in the fiber core. Using optical fibers with enhanced Rayleigh backscattering profiles as distributed temperature sensors, we demonstrated real-time monitoring of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operations with 5-mm spatial resolution at 800 °C. Information gathered by these fiber sensor tools can be used to verify simulation results or operated in a process-control system to improve the operational efficiency and longevity of SOFC-based energy generation systems.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has the propensity to affect non-lymphoid tissue including oral tissue. Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the mandible mistreated as chronic periodontitis with diffuse enlargement of the mandibular canal and ice-cold numbness is very rarely described in English medical literature. A 57-year-old patient presented with a painful swelling on the left side of the mandible with a clinically chronic periodontitis associated with ice-cold numbness. A panoramic radiograph showed a diffuse uniform enlargement of the mandibular canal. Histological examination showed that the lesion was a primary intraosseous non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the mandible. Immunohistochemical examination showed a positive reaction for CD20+, Ki-67+. Seven months after chemotherapy the patient was observed for possible life-threatening propagation of the disease. In conclusion, primary (extra-nodal) non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the mandible usually clinically presents with bone swelling, teeth mobility and neurological disturbance. Radiographic features presenting as diffuse enlargement of the mandibular canal could be considered as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The North American spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus (Cambaridae), endangered in its native range, is a widespread invasive species in European waters and conservationally important carrier of crayfish plague. However, its population structure is poorly known, and no informative genetic markers for the species are available. We tested cross-species transfer of microsatellite loci to spiny-cheek crayfish from 5 other crayfish species. Variability of 10 successfully amplifying loci derived from 4 species was then tested in 60 individuals of O. limosus originating from 3 natural populations: the river Danube at Bogyiszló in Hungary, a pond in Starý Klíèov, and the brook Eernovický, both in the Czech Republic. The allele number within the populations ranged from 4 to 10 alleles per locus, while heterozygosity levels varied from 0.650 to 0.900 for H(o) and from 0.660 to 0.890 for H(e). No linkage disequilibrium and no null alleles were detected. The selected markers are useful for assessing population structure, intraspecific variation, and paternity studies in spiny-cheek crayfish.

This paper demonstrates, for the first time to our best knowledge, the application of a tunable external-cavity fiber Bragg grating diode laser in spectroscopic chemical sensing. A tunable fiber Bragg grating external-cavity semiconductor laser is demonstrated with over 10 nm of tuning range. A piezo-actuator was implemented to stretch the grating for rapid wavelength tuning of the laser. The application of such low-cost tunable FBG lasers in spectroscopic chemical sensing was demonstrated in acetylene gas with a wavelength modulation spectroscopy technique.
