Study population: The database population consists of patients who were admitted to a geriatric hospital unit. Geriatric patients cannot be defined by specific diagnoses. A geriatric patient is typically a frail multimorbid elderly patient with decreasing functional ability and social challenges. The database includes 14–15,000 admissions per year, and the database completeness has been stable at 90% during the past 5 years. Main variables: An important part of the geriatric approach is the interdisciplinary collaboration. Indicators, therefore, reflect the combined efforts directed toward the geriatric patient. The indicators include Barthel index, body mass index, de Morton Mobility Index, Chair Stand, percentage of discharges with a rehabilitation plan, and the part of cases where an interdisciplinary conference has taken place. Data are recorded by doctors, nurses, and therapists in a database and linked to the Danish National Patient Register. Descriptive data: Descriptive patient-related data include information about home, mobility aid, need of fall and/or cognitive diagnosing, and categorization of cause (general geriatric, orthogeriatric, or neurogeriatric). Conclusion: The National Database of Geriatrics covers ~90% of geriatric admissions in Danish hospitals and provides valuable information about a large and increasing patient population in the health care system. DGCD also records detailed data on the diagnostic measures for gynecological cancer. Study population: DGCD was initiated January 1, 2005, and includes all patients treated at Danish hospitals for cancer of the ovaries, peritoneum, fallopian tubes, cervix, vulva, vagina, and uterus, including rare histological types. Main variables: DGCD data are organized within separate data forms as follows: clinical data, surgery, pathology, pre- and postoperative care, complications, follow-up visits, and final quality check. DGCD is linked with additional data from the Danish "Pathology Registry", the "National Patient Registry", and the "Cause of Death Registry" using the unique Danish personal identification number (CPR number). Descriptive data: Data from DGCD and registers are available online in the Statistical Analysis Software portal. The DGCD forms cover almost all possible clinical variables used to describe gynecological cancer courses. The only limitation is the registration of oncological treatment data, which is incomplete for a large number of patients. Conclusion: The very complete collection of available data from more registries form one of the unique strengths of DGCD compared to many other clinical databases, and provides unique possibilities for validation and completeness of data. The success of the DGCD is illustrated through annual reports, high coverage, and several peer-reviewed DGCD-based publications. The local parameters for kerosene-water upward flow are measured in a vertical pipe of 77.8 mm inner diameter at 4200 mm from the inlet ( L/ D = 54) using hot-film and dual optical probes. The effect of superficial water velocity and volumetric quality on radial distribution of two-phase flow parameters is investigated. The results show the following: (i) the profiles of volume fraction and drop frequency are very similar, and increasing superficial water velocity at low volumetric qualities (<18.6%) change the profile from a convex shape with peak at the pipe centreline to uniform then to concave shape with peak near the wall; (ii) the profiles of drop cut chord change from a parabolic shape with peak at centreline for low superficial water velocities to a flat shape at higher superficial water velocity, and the area-averaged drop diameter decreases with higher superficial water velocities for all volumetric qualities; (iii) velocity profiles for both phases have shapes similar to single phase flow, flatter at higher values of superficial water velocity and volumetric quality and centreline peaked at low superficial water velocities and volumetric qualities; (iv) the slip velocity decreases with radial distance having a peak at centreline and zero values near the wall; (v) introducing kerosene drops into single phase water flow results in a sharp increase in turbulent intensity, particularly at low water velocity, and the difference between the single phase and two-phase flow turbulence intensities decreases with higher superficial water velocities and (vi) the results show that interfacial area concentration increased with higher volumetric quality and higher number of bubbles thereby increases the contact area between the two phases. © 2012 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of kerosene-water up-flow in a vertical pipe of 77.8 mm inner diameter and 4500 mm, length downstream of a 90° bend, has been investigated using a Pitot tube and dual optical probe. The CFD ANSYS Fluent 12.0 is used to model the flow and the results are compared with experimental data. The CFD provides detailed information on flow structure which is difficult to obtain in experiments. The experimental measurements of the local parameters demonstrate that the single phase and two-phase flows reached the fully developed axisymmetrical conditions at L/ D = 54. These results also show the severe asymmetry distributions of the two-phase flow parameters at the entrance region ( L/ D = 1). The predictions from Fluent are found to be in close agreement with experimental data for L/ D ≥ 16 but there is a significant discrepancy at L/ D = 1. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical pluralism is a common feature in most health care systems. In this system integration and exchanges between sectors are common, thus forming complex and hybrid systems. This paper analyses such a pluralistic system, and is based on an anthropological study involving participant observation and ethnographic interviews. The research focuses on a group of healers--Los Naturistas from urban Bolivia. They are Mestizos and serve the Indian and Indian Mestizo population. The study findings suggest they integrate explanatory models from both the traditional Andean medicine and biomedicine, but are selective in the sicknesses they treat. They predominantly use herbal medicine. As a group of healers Los Naturistas are establishing their specific place in the Bolivian health care system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIMS:To measure the refractive index distribution in porcine eye lenses for two wavelengths from the visible spectrum: 532 and 633?nm, in order to determine whether there are any discernible wavelength dependent differences in the shape of the profile and in the magnitude of refractive index. METHODS:Rays were traced through 17 porcine lenses of the same age group and of similar size. Ray trace parameters were used to calculate the refractive index distributions for 633?nm light in all 17 lenses and for 532?nm light in 10 lenses. The effect of the refractive index at the edge of the lens, on the rest of the profile, was considered because the mismatch between refractive index at the lens edge and the refractive index of the surrounding gel necessitated a further step in calculations. RESULTS:The shape of the refractive index distributions is parabolic. There is a small wavelength dependent difference in the magnitude of the refractive index across the profile and this increases very slightly into the centre of the lens. The value of the refractive index at the edge of the lens does not appreciably affect the index profile. The role of values is a central feature in Weber's methodology, and the strong influence of Heinrich Rickert on Weber in this respect, is usually taken for granted. Basing itself on coments by Weber on Rickert in a number of, mostly unpublished, manuscript sources this paper re-assesses Weber's dependence on Rickert's concept of 'value-relation'. The paper demonstrates that Weber distances himself from Rickert's terminology and from its philosophical implications, stressing instead the active aspect of commitment in the concept of 'value'. The paper further argues that Weber sees his concept of the ideal type as a methodological tool more useful in practice, and more liable to safeguard the 'value freedom' of social science, than the concept of 'value relation'.
