Scedosporium spp. and Lomentospora prolificans are emerging non-Aspergillus filamentous fungi. The Scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis Observational Study we previously conducted reported frequent fungal vascular involvement, including aortitis and peripheral arteritis. For this article, we reviewed 7 cases of Scedosporium spp. and L. prolificans arteritis from the Scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis Observational Study and 13 cases from published literature. Underlying immunosuppression was reported in 70% (14/20) of case-patients, mainly those who had solid organ transplants (10/14). Osteoarticular localization of infection was observed in 50% (10/20) of cases; infections were frequently (7/10) contiguous with vascular infection sites. Scedosporium spp./Lomentospora prolificans infections were diagnosed in 9 of 20 patients ≈3 months after completing treatment for nonvascular scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis. Aneurysms were found in 8/11 aortitis and 6/10 peripheral arteritis cases. Invasive fungal disease­–related deaths were high (12/18 [67%]). The vascular tropism of Scedosporium spp. and L. prolificans indicates vascular imaging, such as computed tomography angiography, is needed to manage infections, especially for osteoarticular locations.

Background Brain injury is one of the most serious complications after cardiac arrest (CA). To prevent this phenomenon, rapid cooling with total liquid ventilation (TLV) has been proposed in small animal models of CA (rabbits and piglets). Here, we aimed to determine whether hypothermic TLV can also offer neuroprotection and mitigate cerebral inflammatory response in large animals. Methods and Results Anesthetized pigs were subjected to 14 minutes of ventricular fibrillation followed by cardiopulmonary resuscitation. After return of spontaneous circulation, animals were randomly subjected to normothermia (control group, n=8) or ultrafast cooling with TLV (TLV group, n=8). In the latter group, TLV was initiated within a window of 15 minutes after return of spontaneous circulation and allowed to reduce tympanic, esophageal, and bladder temperature to the 32 to 34 °C range within 30 minutes. After 45 minutes of TLV, gas ventilation was resumed, and hypothermia was maintained externally until 3 hours after CA, before rewarming using heat pads (0.5 °C–1 °C/h). After an additional period of progressive rewarming for 3 hours, animals were euthanized for brain withdrawal and histological analysis. At the end of the follow‐up (ie, 6 hours after CA), histology showed reduced brain injury as witnessed by the reduced number of Fluroro‐Jade C‐positive cerebral degenerating neurons in TLV versus control. IL (interleukin)‐1ra and IL‐8 levels were also significantly reduced in the cerebrospinal fluid in TLV versus control along with cerebral infiltration by CD3+ cells. Conversely, circulating levels of cytokines were not different among groups, suggesting a discrepancy between local and systemic inflammatory levels. Conclusions Ultrafast cooling with TLV mitigates neuroinflammation and attenuates acute brain lesions in the early phase following resuscitation in large animals subjected to CA.

Abstract Tissue engineering is a promising alternative to current full thickness circumferential esophageal replacement methods. The aim of our study was to develop a clinical grade Decellularized Human Esophagus (DHE) for future clinical applications. After decontamination, human esophagi from deceased donors were placed in a bioreactor and decellularized with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ethylendiaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for 3 days. The esophagi were then rinsed in sterile water and SDS was eliminated by filtration on an activated charcoal cartridge for 3 days. DNA was removed by a 3-hour incubation with DNase. A cryopreservation protocol was evaluated at the end of the process to create a DHE cryobank. The decellularization was efficient as no cells and nuclei were observed in the DHE. Sterility of the esophagi was obtained at the end of the process. The general structure of the DHE was preserved according to immunohistochemical and scanning electron microscopy images. SDS was efficiently removed, confirmed by a colorimetric dosage, lack of cytotoxicity on Balb/3T3 cells and mesenchymal stromal cell long term culture. Furthermore, DHE did not induce lymphocyte proliferation in-vitro. The cryopreservation protocol was safe and did not affect the tissue, preserving the biomechanical properties of the DHE. Our decellularization protocol allowed to develop the first clinical grade human decellularized and cryopreserved esophagus.

Abstract Endothelial cells cover the lining of different blood vessels and lymph nodes, and have major functions including the transport of blood, vessel homeostasis, inflammatory responses, control of transendothelial migration of circulating cells into the tissues, and formation of new blood vessels. Therefore, understanding these cells is of major interest. The morphological features, phenotype and function of endothelial cells varies according to the vascular bed examined. The sialomucin, CD34, is widely used as an endothelial marker. However, CD34 is differentially expressed on endothelial cells in different organs and in pathological conditions. Little is known about regulation of endothelial CD34 expression or function. Expression of CD34 is also strongly regulated in-vitro in endothelial cell models, including human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and endothelial colony forming cells (ECFC). We have therefore analysed the expression and function of CD34 by comparing CD34high and CD34low endothelial cell subpopulations. Transcriptomic analysis showed that CD34 gene and protein expressions are highly correlated, that CD34high cells proliferate less but express higher levels of IL-33 and Angiopoietin 2, compared with CD34low cells. Higher secretion levels of IL-33 and Angiopoietin 2 by CD34high HUVECs was confirmed by ELISA. Finally, when endothelial cells were allowed to interact with peripheral blood mononuclear cells, CD34high endothelial cells activated stronger proliferation of regulatory T lymphocytes (Tregs) compared to CD34low cells whereas expansion of other CD4+-T cell subsets was equivalent. These results suggest that CD34 expression by endothelial cells in-vitro associates with their ability to proliferate and with an immunogenic ability that favours the tolerogenic response.

Abstract Caspase recruitment-domain containing protein 9 (CARD9) is a key signaling pathway in macrophages but its role in atherosclerosis is still poorly understood. Global deletion of Card9 in Apoe -/- mice as well as hematopoietic deletion in Ldlr -/- mice increases atherosclerosis. The acceleration of atherosclerosis is also observed in Apoe -/- Rag2 -/- Card9 -/- mice, ruling out a role for the adaptive immune system in the vascular phenotype of Card9 deficient mice. Card9 deficiency alters macrophage phenotype through CD36 overexpression with increased IL-1β production, increased lipid uptake, higher cell death susceptibility and defective autophagy. Rapamycin or metformin, two autophagy inducers, abolish intracellular lipid overload, restore macrophage survival and autophagy flux in vitro and finally abolish the pro-atherogenic effects of Card9 deficiency in vivo. Transcriptomic analysis of human CARD9-deficient monocytes confirms the pathogenic signature identified in murine models. In summary, CARD9 is a key protective pathway in atherosclerosis, modulating macrophage CD36-dependent inflammatory responses, lipid uptake and autophagy.

Abstract Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a stress-induced cardiovascular disease with symptoms comparable to those of an acute coronary syndrome but without coronary obstruction. Takotsubo was initially considered spontaneously reversible, but epidemiological studies revealed significant long-term morbidity and mortality, the reason for which is unknown. Here, we show in a female rodent model that a single pharmacological challenge creates a stress-induced cardiomyopathy similar to Takotsubo. The acute response involves changes in blood and tissue biomarkers and in cardiac in vivo imaging acquired with ultrasound, magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography. Longitudinal follow up using in vivo imaging, histochemistry, protein and proteomics analyses evidences a continued metabolic reprogramming of the heart towards metabolic malfunction, eventually leading to irreversible damage in cardiac function and structure. The results combat the supposed reversibility of Takotsubo, point to dysregulation of glucose metabolic pathways as a main cause of long-term cardiac disease and support early therapeutic management of Takotsubo.

Here, Manriquez et al. use a humanized mouse model to show that pathogen colonization of capillaries and arterioles creates an intravascular niche that precludes an effective action of neutrophils.

Abstract In recent years, 3D cell culture models such as spheroid or organoid technologies have known important developments. Many studies have shown that 3D cultures exhibit better biomimetic properties compared to 2D cultures. These properties are important for in-vitro modeling systems, as well as for in-vivo cell therapies and tissue engineering approaches. A reliable use of 3D cellular models still requires standardized protocols with well-controlled and reproducible parameters. To address this challenge, a robust and scaffold-free approach is proposed, which relies on multi-trap acoustic levitation. This technology is successfully applied to Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) maintained in acoustic levitation over a 24-h period. During the culture, MSCs spontaneously self-organized from cell sheets to cell spheroids with a characteristic time of about 10 h. Each acoustofluidic chip could contain up to 30 spheroids in acoustic levitation and four chips could be ran in parallel, leading to the production of 120 spheroids per experiment. Various biological characterizations showed that the cells inside the spheroids were viable, maintained the expression of their cell surface markers and had a higher differentiation capacity compared to standard 2D culture conditions. These results open the path to long-time cell culture in acoustic levitation of cell sheets or spheroids for any type of cells.

Immune cells contribute to adverse remodeling following myocardial infarction. Here the authors show in mice and pigs that CD8+ lymphocytes release Granzyme B in the infarcted heart leading to cardiomyocyte death, enhanced inflammation and deterioration of cardiac function.

Transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPVI) is indicated for use in the management of failing pulmonary valves in humans. We report here the long-term follow-up of the first documented transcatheter pulmonary valve implanted in a client-owned dog. A one-year-old Beagle dog with severe congenital type A valvular pulmonic stenosis first underwent percutaneous balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty, leading two years later to severe pulmonary regurgitation. A TPVI using a Melody™ bioprosthetic valve was then successfully performed, with normalization of the right heart cavities. Repeated two- and three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiographic examinations combined with Doppler modes confirmed the appropriate position and function of the valve for four years. Mitral myxomatous valvular degeneration led to refractory left-sided congestive heart failure, and the dog was humanely euthanized. After postmortem examination, X-ray imaging and histopathological evaluation of the stent and the valve were performed. Ex-vivo imaging of the implanted valve using a Faxitron® Path radiography system and microscopic evaluation of the implanted stent and bioprosthetic leaflets did not show any relevant leaflet or stent alterations. This case provides a proof of concept in interventional veterinary cardiology, showing that TPVI can be performed in dogs with subsequent long-term maintaining normal pulmonary valve function. We use the GW100 benchmark set to systematically judge the quality of several perturbation theories against high-level quantum chemistry methods. First of all, we revisit the reference CCSD(T) ionization potentials for this popular benchmark set and establish a revised set of CCSD(T) results. Then, for all of these 100 molecules, we calculate the HOMO energy within second and third-order perturbation theory (PT2 and PT3), and, GW as post-Hartree-Fock methods. We found GW to be the most accurate of these three approximations for the ionization potential, by far. Going beyond GW by adding more diagrams is a tedious and dangerous activity: We tried to complement GW with second-order exchange (SOX), with second-order screened exchange (SOSEX), with interacting electron-hole pairs (WTDHF), and with a GW density-matrix (γGW). Only the γGW result has a positive impact. Finally using an improved hybrid functional for the non-interacting Green’s function, considering it as a cheap way to approximate self-consistency, the accuracy of the simplest GW approximation improves even more. We conclude that GW is a miracle: Its subtle balance makes GW both accurate and fast.

‘Missing self’ is a mode of natural killer (NK) cell activation aimed to detect the lack of HLA-I molecules on infected or neoplastic cells. Here, the authors show that mismatch between donor HLA-I and cognate receptors on recipient NK cells mediates microvascular inflammation-associated graft rejection, a pathology that is preventable by mTOR inhibition.

In both focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and crescentic glomerulonephritis (CGN), kidney injury is characterised by the invasion of glomerular tufts by parietal epithelial cells (PECs). Here Lazareth et al. identify the tetraspanin CD9 as a key regulator of PEC migration, and find its upregulation in FSGS and CGN contributes to kidney injury in both diseases.

Aim: To validate a photoacoustic imaging (PAI) system, for the identification of intraplaque hemorrhage, comparing it with MRI and histology (gold standard). Methods: 25 patients with carotid stenosis >70% and clinical indication to tromboendoarterectomy were recruited. Angio-MRI for intraplaque hemorrhage assessment (Cube sequence) was performed. PAI clips (5 seconds, Frame rate 1000/sec, 3 to 15 per patient) were acquired. Each clip was scored for the presence of PAI signal by means of an integrated scoring system (semiquantitative, from 0 to 12). Semiquantitative grading scales were used to assess plaque histological features of hemorrhage and vulnerability. Results: 18 patients had no missing MRI, PAI and histology data and were included in this analysis. Mean age was 73 ± 8 years, 60% men, 80% Caucasians, 92% hypertensives, 60% with a previous stroke. At histology, only 3 plaques out of 21 showed no signs of intraplaque hemorrhage, 4 showed small hemorrhage, while 14 (67%) showed large hemorrhages. PAI score (best cut-off ≥ 4) correctly classified 14 out of 18 patients (Sensitivity = 73.3%, specificity = 100%, AUC = 0.867). MRI performance was substantially similar, with 12 patients correctly classified (sensitivity = 60%, specificity = 100%, AUC = 0.800), with a non-significant difference in AUC compared to PAI (p = 0.420). Conclusions: In this first in-vivo human study, PAI is able to identify histological intraplaque hemorrhage with an excellent specificity and acceptable sensitivity, equivalent to MRI. The very high specificity, with a low number of false positives, make PAI a good candidate for evaluation of plaques prior to surgery to i.e. reinforce the decision to perform surgery.

Background Absolute hyperemic coronary blood flow and microvascular resistances can be measured by continuous thermodilution with a dedicated infusion catheter. We aimed to determine the mechanisms of this hyperemic response in animal. Methods and Results Twenty open chest pigs were instrumented with flow probes on coronary arteries. The following possible mechanisms of saline‐induced hyperemia were explored compared with maximal hyperemia achieve with adenosine by testing: (1) various infusion rates; (2) various infusion content and temperature; (3) NO production inhibition with L‐arginine methyl ester and endothelial denudation; (4) effects of vibrations generated by rotational atherectomy and of infusion through one end‐hole versus side‐holes. Saline infusion rates of 5, 10 and 15 mL/min did not reach maximal hyperemia as compared with adenosine. Percentage of coronary blood flow expressed in percent of the coronary blood flow after adenosine were 48±17% at baseline, 57±18% at 5 mL/min, 65±17% at 10 mL/min, 82±26% at 15 mL/min and 107±18% at 20 mL/min. Maximal hyperemia was observed during infusion of both saline at body temperature and glucose 5%, after endothelial denudation, l‐arginine methyl ester administration, and after stent implantation. The activation of a Rota burr in the first millimeters of the epicardial artery also induced maximal hyperemia. Maximal hyperemia was achieved by infusion through lateral side‐holes but not through an end‐hole catheter. Conclusions Infusion of saline at 20 mL/min through a catheter with side holes in the first millimeters of the epicardial artery induces maximal hyperemia. The data indicate that this vasodilation is related neither to the composition/temperature of the indicator nor is it endothelial mediated. It is suggested that it could be elicited by epicardial wall vibrations.

ObjectiveThe degree of stenosis of a carotid plaque is a well-established risk factor for ischemic stroke. Nevertheless, the risk of ipsilateral stroke in asymptomatic carotid stenosis remains low and new imaging markers are needed to better target which patients would benefit most from endarterectomy or intensive medical therapy. Ultrafast ultrasound imaging offers parameters helping at characterizing the carotid plaque by shear wave elastography and Ultrafast Doppler (UFD). We aimed at using these techniques to characterize 3 different ultrasound biomarkers: plaque stiffness heterogeneity, wall shear stress (WSS) and intraplaque micro-flows and to correlate these biomarkers with findings on computed tomography angiography (CTA) and the pathological examination.MethodsWe present the case of a multimodal evaluation of a carotid plaque using ultrasound. Elastography has been coupled to the WSS assessment and the detection of intraplaque micro-flows by UFD. The data have been compared to CTA and to the pathology examination of the tissue after carotid endarterectomy.ResultsElastography allowed at identifying stiff areas corresponding to calcifications, as well as a soft area corresponding to an intraplaque hemorrhage. The flow evaluation with UFD showed an increase of the WSS along the plaque and identified the presence of a plaque rupture, confirmed by the pathologist.ConclusionUltrafast ultrasound imaging is an innovative, easily accessible technique that provides imaging modalities on top of the conventional B-mode. Ultrafast ultrasound biomarkers such as plaque stiffness heterogeneity, WSS and intraplaque micro-flows could help to define the vulnerability of the carotid plaque in order to stratify patients that could benefit most from endarterectomy or intensive medical therapy.

Background: Total liquid ventilation (TLV) of the lungs could provide radically new benefits in critically ill patients requiring lung lavage or ultra-fast cooling after cardiac arrest. It consists in an initial filling of the lungs with perfluorocarbons and subsequent tidal ventilation using a dedicated liquid ventilator. Here, we propose a new paradigm for a lung-conservative TLV using pulmonary volumes of perfluorocarbons below functional residual capacity (FRC). Methods and findings: Using a dedicated technology, we showed that perfluorocarbon end-expiratory volumes could be maintained below expected FRC and lead to better respiratory recovery, preserved lung structure and accelerated evaporation of liquid residues as compared to complete lung filling in piglets. Such TLV below FRC prevented volutrauma through preservation of alveolar recruitment reserve. When used with temperature-controlled perfluorocarbons, this lung-conservative approach provided neuroprotective ultra-fast cooling in a model of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The scale-up and automating of the technology confirmed that incomplete initial lung filling during TLV was beneficial in human adult-sized pigs, despite larger size and maturity of the lungs. Our results were confirmed in aged non-human primates, confirming the safety of this lung-conservative approach. Interpretation: This study demonstrated that TLV with an accurate control of perfluorocarbon volume below FRC could provide the full potential of TLV in an innovative and safe manner. This constitutes a new paradigm through the tidal liquid ventilation of incompletely filled lungs, which strongly differs from the previously known TLV approach, opening promising perspectives for a safer clinical translation. Abstract Background Ultrafast cooling by total liquid ventilation (TLV) provides potent cardio- and neuroprotection after experimental cardiac arrest. However, this was evaluated in animals with no initial lung injury, whereas out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is frequently associated with early-onset pneumonia, which may lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Here, our objective was to determine whether hypothermic TLV could be safe or even beneficial in an aspiration-associated ARDS animal model. Methods ARDS was induced in anesthetized rabbits through a two-hits model including the intra-tracheal administration of a pH = 1 solution mimicking gastric content and subsequent gaseous non-protective ventilation during 90 min (tidal volume [Vt] = 10 ml/kg with positive end-expiration pressure [PEEP] = 0 cmH2O). After this initial period, animals either received lung protective gas ventilation (LPV; Vt = 8 ml/kg and PEEP = 5 cmH2O) under normothermic conditions, or hypothermic TLV (TLV; Vt = 8 ml/kg and end-expiratory volume = 15 ml/kg). Both strategies were applied for 120 min with a continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular parameters. Animals were then euthanized for pulmonary histological analyses. Results Eight rabbits were included in each group. Before randomization, all animals elicited ARDS with arterial oxygen partial pressure over inhaled oxygen fraction ratios (PaO2/FiO2) below 100 mmHg, as well as decreased lung compliance. After randomization, body temperature rapidly decreased in TLV versus LPV group (32.6 ± 0.6 vs. 38.2 ± 0.4 °C after 15 min). Static lung compliance and gas exchanges were not significantly different in the TLV versus LPV group (PaO2/FiO2 = 62 ± 4 vs. 52 ± 8 mmHg at the end of the procedure, respectively). Mean arterial pressure and arterial bicarbonates levels were significantly higher in TLV versus LPV. Histological analysis also showed significantly lower inflammation in TLV versus LPV group (median histological score = 3 vs. 4.5/5, respectively; p = 0.03). Conclusion Hypothermic TLV can be safely induced in rabbits during aspiration-associated ARDS. It modified neither gas exchanges nor respiratory mechanics but reduced lung inflammation and hemodynamic failure in comparison with LPV. Since hypothermic TLV was previously shown to provide neuro- and cardio protective effects after cardiac arrest, these findings suggest a possible use of TLV in the settings of cardiac arrest-associated ARDS.

Here Henique et al. demonstrate that inhibition of miRNA-92a prevents kidney failure by promoting the expression of CDK inhibitor p57Kip2 that regulates podocyte cell cycle.

The authors propose a novel noninvasive therapeutic approach for degenerative calcified bioprosthetic heart valves based on pulsed cavitational ultrasound (PCU) to improve the valvular function by remotely softening calcified stiff cusps. This study aims to demonstrate both in vivo, using an ovine model with implanted human calcified bioprosthesis, and in vitro that PCU can significantly improve the bioprosthesis function. A 50% decrease of the transvalvular gradient was found, demonstrating a strong improvement of the valve opening function. This new noninvasive approach has the potential to improve the outcomes of patients with severe bioprosthesis stenosis.

Abstract The assessment of myocardial fiber disarray is of major interest for the study of the progression of myocardial disease. However, time-resolved imaging of the myocardial structure remains unavailable in clinical practice. In this study, we introduce 3D Backscatter Tensor Imaging (3D-BTI), an entirely novel ultrasound-based imaging technique that can map the myocardial fibers orientation and its dynamics with a temporal resolution of 10 ms during a single cardiac cycle, non-invasively and in vivo in entire volumes. 3D-BTI is based on ultrafast volumetric ultrasound acquisitions, which are used to quantify the spatial coherence of backscattered echoes at each point of the volume. The capability of 3D-BTI to map the fibers orientation was evaluated in vitro in 5 myocardial samples. The helicoidal transmural variation of fiber angles was in good agreement with the one obtained by histological analysis. 3D-BTI was then performed to map the fiber orientation dynamics in vivo in the beating heart of an open-chest sheep at a volume rate of 90 volumes/s. Finally, the clinical feasibility of 3D-BTI was shown on a healthy volunteer. These initial results indicate that 3D-BTI could become a fully non-invasive technique to assess myocardial disarray at the bedside of patients.

Multi-spectral photoacoustic imaging (MSPAI) is promising for morphology assessment of carotid plaques; however, obtaining unique spectral characteristics of chromophores is cumbersome. We used MSPAI and non-negative independent component analysis (ICA) to unmix distinct signal sources in human carotid plaques blindly. The feasibility of the method was demonstrated on a plaque phantom with hemorrhage and cholesterol inclusions, and plaque endarterectomy samples ex vivo. Furthermore, the results were verified with histology using Masson's trichrome staining. Results showed that ICA could separate recent hemorrhages from old hemorrhages. Additionally, the signatures of cholesterol inclusion were also captured for the phantom experiment. Artifacts were successfully removed from signal sources. Histologic examinations showed high resemblance with the unmixed components and confirmed the morphologic distinction between recent and mature hemorrhages. In future pre-clinical studies, unmixing could be used for morphology assessment of intact human plaque samples. Purpose of the ReviewBicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is associated with a significant risk of development of aneurysm and dissection of the ascending thoracic aorta. Development of what is called BAV associated aortopathy is particularly heterogeneous with an uncertain prognosis and with no prognostic biomarkers except for the aortic diameter. This situation leads to an important variability of the therapeutic strategy of this aortopathy. By reviewing the literature on aortic stiffness in the case of BAV, we aimed at evaluating its potential prognostic role in the development of aortic dilatation.Recent FindingsStudies evaluating aortic stiffness, with ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging, converge toward the description of an increased segmental aortic stiffness in BAV patients regardless of age, diameter or aortic level, from the root to the arch. Even though there is a lack of longitudinal studies evaluating the progression of aortic dilatation, new data have recently shown the potential prognostic role of the maximal rate of systolic distension of the aortic wall with magnetic resonance imaging.SummaryAlthough the use of aortic distensibility calculation is a simple evaluation of stiffness that could be easily transposed in daily practice, its interpretation remains uncertain. New arterial stiffening indicators seem more promising but need a stronger validation.

Argon inhalation attenuates multiorgan failure (MOF) after experimental ischemic injury. We hypothesized that this protection could involve decreased High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) systemic release. We investigated this issue in an animal model of MOF induced by aortic cross-clamping. Anesthetized rabbits were submitted to supra-coeliac aortic cross-clamping for 30 min, followed by 300 min of reperfusion. They were randomly divided into three groups (n = 7/group). The Control group inhaled nitrogen (70%) and oxygen (30%). The Argon group was exposed to a mixture of argon (70%) and oxygen (30%). The last group inhaled nitrogen/oxygen (70/30%) with an administration of the HMGB1 inhibitor glycyrrhizin (4 mg/kg i.v.) 5 min before aortic unclamping. At the end of follow-up, cardiac output was significantly higher in Argon and Glycyrrhizin vs. Control (60 ± 4 and 49 ± 4 vs. 33 ± 8 mL/kg/min, respectively). Metabolic acidosis was attenuated in Argon and Glycyrrhizin vs. Control, along with reduced amount of norepinephrine to reverse arterial hypotension. This was associated with reduced interleukin-6 and HMGB1 plasma concentration in Argon and Glycyrrhizin vs. Control. End-organ damages were also attenuated in the liver and kidney in Argon and Glycyrrhizin vs. Control, respectively. Argon inhalation reduced HMGB1 blood level after experimental aortic cross-clamping and provided similar benefits to direct HMGB1 inhibition.
