Abstract

Laser Plasma Accelerators (LPAs), harnessing gigavolt-per-centimeter accelerating fields, can generate high peak current, low emittance and GeV class electron beams paving the way for the realization of future compact free-electron lasers (FELs). Here, we report on the commissioning of the COXINEL beamline driven by the HZDR plasma accelerator and experimental demonstration of FEL lasing at 270 nm in a seeded configuration. Control over the radiation wavelength is achieved with an improved bandwidth stability. Furthermore, the appearance of interference fringes, resulting from the interaction between the phase-locked emitted radiation and the seed, confirms longitudinal coherence, representing a key feature of such a seeded FEL. These results are cross-checked with simulations, ELEGANT for beam optics and GENESIS for FEL radiation. We anticipate a navigable pathway toward smaller-scale free-electron lasers at extreme ultra-violet wavelengths.

Abstract

Standardization of the robot brand Over the large range of industrial robot brands, the Stäubli robot was chosen as suitable to address SOLEIL needs. Experimental platform Figure 4 shows the experimental platform with the 2-circles diffractometer and the robot Stäubli TX2-60L. The robot, whose main characteristics are indicated in Table 1, is mounted on a mobile chassis integrating the robot controller Cs9, the electrical rack, the fluid panel, and the input/output modules. Abstract

Short period, high field undulators are used to produce hard X-rays on synchrotron radiation based storage ring facilities of intermediate energy and enable short wavelength Free Electron Laser. Cryogenic permanent magnet undulators take benefit from improved magnetic properties of RE2Fe14B (Rare Earth based magnets) at low temperatures for achieving short period, high magnetic field and high coercivity. Using Pr2Fe14B instead of Nd2Fe14B, which is generally employed for undulators, avoids the limitation caused by the Spin Reorientation Transition phenomenon, and simplifies the cooling system by allowing the working temperature of the undulator to be directly at the liquid nitrogen one (77 K). We describe here the development of a full scale (2 m), 18 mm period Pr2Fe14B cryogenic permanent magnet undulator (U18). The design, construction and optimization, as well as magnetic measurements and shimming at low temperature are presented. The commissioning and operation of the undulator with the electron beam and spectrum measurement using the Nanoscopmium beamline at SOLEIL are also reported., To be submitted to PRAB

Abstract

Since the laser invention [1, 2], the advent of Free Electron Lasers (FEL) [3, 4] in the X-ray domain half a century later, has opened new areas for matter investigation with higher temporal resolution. In parallel, the development of laser plasma acceleration (LPA) [5] that delivers today several GeV beam acceleration [6] in a short distance appears also very promising. The qualification of the LPA for FEL application can thus be viewed as an important challenge [7]. Nevertheless, present LPA electron beam parameters (e. g. energy spread and beam divergence) do not meet conventional accelerator state-of-the-art performance and FEL application requires a specific beam handling. In such a prospect, the COXINEL beam manipulation line [8, 9] using variable permanent magnet quadrupoles for emittance growth mitigation and de-mixing chicane for the energy spread handling developed at SOLEIL has been installed for using electrons produced with an intense laser of Laboratoire d’Optique Appliquee (LOA). ´ Strategies for controlling electron beam position and dispersion have been elaborated and demonstrated [10]. Abstract

With gigaelectron-volts per centimetre energy gains and femtosecond electron beams, laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) is a promising candidate for applications, such as ultrafast electron diffraction, multistaged colliders and radiation sources (betatron, compton, undulator, free electron laser). However, for some of these applications, the beam performance, for example, energy spread, divergence and shot-to-shot fluctuations, need a drastic improvement. Here, we show that, using a dedicated transport line, we can mitigate these initial weaknesses. We demonstrate that we can manipulate the beam longitudinal and transverse phase-space of the presently available LWFA beams. Indeed, we separately correct orbit mis-steerings and minimise dispersion thanks to specially designed variable strength quadrupoles, and select the useful energy range passing through a slit in a magnetic chicane. Therefore, this matched electron beam leads to the successful observation of undulator synchrotron radiation after an 8 m transport path. Abstract

Short period high field undulators are of interest for X-ray brilliance enhancement in synchrotron radiation applications and for compact Free Electron Lasers. Cryogenic in-vacuum undulators [1] are one of the possible solutions. At SOLEIL, PrFeB magnets were directly chosen, even if still under development at that time. Indeed, they enable to avoid the spin transition reorientation phenomenon which occurs with NdFeB magnets [2] and the magnets can be cooled down directly at 77 K. The first selected grade CR53 from Hitachi presents a remanence of 1.35 T at 293 K and 1.57 T at 77 K, with a coercivity of 1355 kA/m at 293 K and 6000 kA/m at 77 K. A 2 m long cryogenic undulator of period 18 mm was first built in-house, with a specific Hall probe bench directly installed in the final vacuum chamber. This first cryogenic undulator has been in operation on the storage ring for 4 years [3]. A second U18 cryo-ready undulator using a slightly different magnet grade with a higher coercivity and modules with magnets surrounded by two half poles for easier magnetic optimization is under construction. A third 3 m long cryo-ready undulator U15 with a period of 15 mm is under development. It will be first used for the LUNEX5 FEL [4, 5] project (COXINEL demonstration of FEL amplification with a laser wakefield acceleration [6]). Abstract

More than 50 years after the laser discovery, X-ray free electron lasers (FEL), the first powerful tuneable, short pulse lasers in the X-ray spectral range, are now blooming in the world, enabling new discoveries on the ultra-fast dynamics of excited systems and imaging. LUNEX5 demonstrator project aims at investigating paths towards advanced and compact FELs. Two strategies are adopted. The first one concerns the FEL line where seeding and echo harmonic generation are implemented together with compact cryogenic in-vacuum undulators. In the second one, the electron beam is no longer provided by a conventional linear accelerator but by a laser plasma process, while a necessary particular electron beam manipulation is required to handle the electron properties to enable FEL amplification. Abstract

The SOLEIL storage ring presents a very high fraction of its circumference dedicated to accommodate Insertion Devices (ID). Over the 25 presently planned insertion devices presenting a large variety of systems, 16 have been already installed and commissioned in September 2009. The UV-VUV region is covered with electromagnetic devices, offering tuneable polarisations. An electromagnet/permanent magnet undulator using copper sheets coils for fast switching of the helicity is under construction. 13 APPLE-II type undulators, with period ranging from 80 down to 36 mm, provide photons in the 0.1–10 keV region, some of them featuring tapering or quasi-periodicity. Five U20 in vacuum undulators cover typically the 3–30 keV range whereas an in vacuum wiggler, with compensation of the magnetic forces via adequate springs will cover the 10–50 keV spectral domain. R&D on cryogenic in-vacuum undulator is also under progress. A magnetic chicane using permanent magnet dipoles has also been designed in order to accommodate two canted undulators on the same straight section. Abstract

Three elliptical undulators HU256 of electromagnetic type were produced, tested and magnetically measured by the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (Russia) for Synchrotron Soleil (France). The undulators have a new design of a Bx & Bz closed structure for insertion vacuum chamber. In the elliptical undulator HU256 with period of the magnetic fields of 256 mm, the vertical magnetic field (Bzmax=0.44 T) formed by 27 Bz laminated dipole magnets is symmetric, and the horizontal magnetic field (Bxmax=0.33 T) formed by 28 Bx laminated dipole magnets is asymmetric. The undulator can work in standard mode as well as in a quasi-periodical mode. The vertical magnetic field may be modulated by switching on the modulation coils placed on the Bz dipoles. Two power supply systems allow us to modulate the horizontal magnetic field, and change the radiation spectrum. The magnetic calculations of the individual dipoles and dipoles in “undulator” environment were executed by means of Mermaid 3D Code. The magnetic measurements of the individual dipoles had confirmed the magnetic calculations. On basis of semiempirical dependences from the mechanical characteristics the estimates of the magnetic parameters for all dipoles were calculated. Sorting of dipoles in the undulators have been done, and it has improved the magnetic parameters of the assembled undulators in comparison with the statistical estimations. The magnetic measurements of the undulators HU256 were carried out at Budker INP by Hall probes and at Soleil by Hall probes and Stretched Wire. Abstract

The magnetic calculations of the individual dipoles and dipoles in “undulator environment” were executed by means of Mermaid 3D Code and these results were confirmed by magnetic measurements of the individual dipoles and the assembled undulators. The magnetic parameters of all dipoles were estimated on basis of the mechanical measurement of the dipole characteristics (pole gap, yoke width, coil position) and the main dependences obtained from magnetic calculations and measurements. These parameters were used for optimal placing of the dipoles in undulators (sorting). The special Hall probe system was designed and manufactured for magnetic measurements of the undulators. It allowed us to observe the inner structure of the magnetic fields. At a magnetic field measurement accuracy of ± 15 μT the accuracy of the 1st integral calculated on the basis of the measured magnetic fields is ∼ 50 μTm. The paper describes the design, magnetic computations and measurements of the elliptical undulator HU256 for Synchrotron Soleil (France): the new technology for insertion vacuum chamber has permitted the design of a Bx & Bz dipole closed structure for an electromagnetic undulator. This magnetic design has been realized on the basis of the 2-D, 3-D modeling (Mermaid and RADIA codes), and dependence's of the magnetic field integrals from the main macroscopic parameters have been obtained. Abstract

Free-electron lasers generate high-brilliance coherent radiation at wavelengths spanning from the infrared to the X-ray domains. The recent development of short-wavelength seeded free-electron lasers now allows for unprecedented levels of control on longitudinal coherence[1], opening new scientific avenues as ultra-fast dynamics on complex systems and X-ray nonlinear optics. While those devices rely on state-of-the-art large-scale accelerators, advancements on laser-plasma accelerators, which harness giga-volt-per-centimeter accelerating fields, showcase a promising technology as compact drivers for free-electron lasers. Using such miniaturized accelerators, exponential amplification of a shot-noise type of radiation in a self-amplified spontaneous emission configuration was recently achieved [2]. However, employing this compact approach for the delivery of temporally coherent pulses in a controlled manner remained a major challenge. Here, we present the experimental demonstration of a laser-plasma accelerator driven free-electron laser in a seeded configuration, where control over the radiation wavelength is accomplished. Furthermore, the appearance of interference fringes, resulting from the interaction between the phase-locked emitted radiation and the seed, confirms longitudinal coherence. Building on our scientific achievements, we anticipate a straightforward scaling to extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths, paving the way towards university-scale free-electron lasers, unique tools for a multitude of applications. Abstract

European physical journal special topics 229(24), 3675 - 4284 (2020). doi:10.1140/epjst/e2020-000127-8, This report presents the conceptual design of a new European research infrastructure EuPRAXIA. The concept has been established over the last four years in a unique collaboration of 41 laboratories within a Horizon 2020 design study funded by the European Union. EuPRAXIA is the first European project that develops a dedicated particle accelerator research infrastructure based on novel plasma acceleration concepts and laser technology. It focuses on the development of electron accelerators and underlying technologies, their user communities, and the exploitation of existing accelerator infrastructures in Europe. EuPRAXIA has involved, amongst others, the international laser community and industry to build links and bridges with accelerator science — through realising synergies, identifying disruptive ideas, innovating, and fostering knowledge exchange. The Eu-PRAXIA project aims at the construction of an innovative electron accelerator using laser- and electron-beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration that offers a significant reduction in size and possible savings in cost over current state-of-the-art radiofrequency-based accelerators. The foreseen electron energy range of one to five gigaelectronvolts (GeV) and its performance goals will enable versatile applications in various domains, e.g. as a compact free-electron laser (FEL), compact sources for medical imaging and positron generation, table-top test beams for particle detectors, as well as deeply penetrating X-ray and gamma-ray sources for material testing. EuPRAXIA is designed to be the required stepping stone to possible future plasma-based facilities, such as linear colliders at the high-energy physics (HEP) energy frontier. Consistent with a high-confidence approach, the project includes measures to retire risk by establishing scaled technology demonstrators. Abstract

Higher order harmonic generation in a free-electron laser amplifier operating in the superradiant regime [R.H. Dicke, Phys. Rev. 93, 99 (1954).] has been observed. Superradiance has been induced by seeding a single-pass amplifier with the second harmonic of a Ti:sapphire laser, generated in a /3-Barium borate crystal, at seed intensities comparable to the free-electron laser saturation intensity. Abstract

We report the first experimental implementation of a method based on simultaneous use of an energy chirp in the electron beam and a tapered undulator, for the generation of ultrashort pulses in a self-amplified spontaneous emission mode free-electron laser (SASE FEL). The experiment, performed at the SPARC FEL test facility, demonstrates the possibility of compensating the nominally detrimental effect of the chirp by a proper taper of the undulator gaps. An increase of more than 1 order of magnitude in the pulse energy is observed in comparison to the untapered case, accompanied by FEL spectra where the typical SASE spiking is suppressed.
