2. A Workshop to Build Community and Broaden Participation in Mathematics: Reflections on the Mathematics Project at Minnesota

Abstract

We detail our experience running an annual four-day workshop at the University of Minnesota, called the Mathematics Project at Minnesota (MPM). The workshop is for undergraduates who come from groups underrepresented in mathematics and aims to increase the participation and success of such groups in the mathematics major at the University. In this paper, we explain how MPM is organized, discuss its objectives, and highlight some of the sessions that we feel are emblematic of the program's success. The paper concludes with an analysis of achievements and obstacles in the programs' first three years. 5. Where Are They Now? What States' Studies of People Who Left Welfare Tell Us. Assessing the New Federalism. An Urban Institute Program To Assess Changing Social Policies. Series A, No. A-32.

Abstract

This review attempts to consider all publicly available studies that examine employment outcomes for people who have left welfare. Only studies that describe their methodology clearly and report survey response rates of 50% or higher are included, for a total of 11 studies reviewed. These studies cover various geographic areas, labor market conditions, and welfare reform policies. Some general patterns emerge. The majority of welfare leavers are working. Shortly after leaving welfare for any reason, including sanction, half to two-thirds of welfare leavers were employed after a specific period of time. Those who remain off welfare tend to have higher employment rates than those who return to welfare, and those who left as a result of sanction have lower employment rates. Leavers usually have low-wage jobs, however, so their earnings remain low, despite high employment rates and number of hours worked. The average welfare leaver's earnings are below the poverty level, and most leavers report incomes that are lower than or similar to their combined earnings and benefits before leaving welfare. One-half to two-thirds of welfare leavers continue to receive Medicaid, while about half receive food stamps. Most families believe they are better off leaving welfare, but about a third report problems providing food, paying utility bills, and paying rent. A few studies found significant reliance on friends and family as a means of additional support. (Contains 10 end notes and 9 tables.) (SLD)

6. A simplified presentation of Specht modules.

Abstract

Fulton and Kraskiewicz gave a presentation of Specht modules as a quotient of the space of column tabloids by dual Garnir relations. We simplify this presentation by showing that it can be generated by a single relation for each pair of columns of a tableau with ordered columns, thereby significantly reducing the number of generators given in the original construction. Our presentation applies to all Specht modules, and is of a similar nature to a recent result by Friedmann-Hanlon-Stanley-Wachs that applies to staircase partitions. We show that our presentation implies the Friedmann-Hanlon-Stanley-Wachs presentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We use detailed measures of social change over time, the proliferation of specific family planning and other health services, and couple’s fertility behaviors to document the independent effects of specific dimensions of health services on fertility limitation. Our investigation focuses on a setting in rural Nepal that experienced a transition from virtually no use of birth control in 1945 to the widespread use of birth control to limit fertility by 1995. Findings show that both provision of contraceptive methods and maternal and child health services have independent effects on the rate of ending childbearing. These results provide important new information about the consequences of specific dimensions of family planning and health services, and the relationship of those consequences to other simultaneous dimensions of social change. 8. Use of Family Planning Services and Contraception at First Intercourse: Insights from a Social Psychological Framework.

Abstract

This study applies Ajzen?s theory of planned behavior to the question of how receipt of family planning services influences young, U.S. women?s contraceptive behavior at first intercourse. Competing risk hazard models are estimated using data from the National Survey of Family Growth Cycle V. Findings show that receipt of family planning services at least one year before first intercourse increases the rate of contraceptive use at first sex. Receipt of family planning services does not affect the rate of having sex. Furthermore, these findings support the inclusion of both perceived and actual behavior control in behavioral models.
