Abstract

The interaction of relativistically intense lasers with opaque targets represents a highly non-linear, multi-dimensional parameter space. This limits the utility of sequential 1D scanning of experimental parameters for the optimisation of secondary radiation, although to-date this has been the accepted methodology due to low data acquisition rates. High repetition-rate (HRR) lasers augmented by machine learning present a valuable opportunity for efficient source optimisation. Here, an automated, HRR-compatible system produced high fidelity parameter scans, revealing the influence of laser intensity on target pre-heating and proton generation. A closed-loop Bayesian optimisation of maximum proton energy, through control of the laser wavefront and target position, produced proton beams with equivalent maximum energy to manually-optimized laser pulses but using only 60% of the laser energy. This demonstration of automated optimisation of laser-driven proton beams is a crucial step towards deeper physical insight and the construction of future radiation sources., 11 pages

Abstract

Laser wakefield accelerators commonly produce on-axis, low-divergence, high-energy electron beams. However, a high charge, annular shaped beam can be trapped outside the bubble and accelerated to high energies. Here we present a parametric study on the production of low-energy-spread, ultra-relativistic electron ring beams in a two-stage gas cell. Ring-shaped beams with energies higher than 750 MeV are observed simultaneously with on axis, continuously injected electrons. Often multiple ring shaped beams with different energies are produced and parametric studies to control the generation and properties of these structures were conducted. Particle tracking and particle-in-cell simulations are used to determine properties of these beams and investigate how they are formed and trapped outside the bubble by the wake produced by on-axis injected electrons. These unusual femtosecond duration, high-charge, high-energy, ring electron beams may find use in beam driven plasma wakefield accelerators and radiation sources.

Abstract

We present the development and characterization of a high-stability, multi-material, multi-thickness tape-drive target for laser-driven acceleration at repetition rates of up to 100 Hz. The tape surface position was measured to be stable on the sub-micrometre scale, compatible with the high-numerical aperture focusing geometries required to achieve relativistic intensity interactions with the pulse energy available in current multi-Hz and near-future higher repetition-rate lasers (>kHz). Long-term drift was characterized at 100 Hz demonstrating suitability for operation over extended periods. The target was continuously operated at up to 5 Hz in a recent experiment for 70,000 shots without intervention by the experimental team, with the exception of tape replacement, producing the largest data-set of relativistically intense laser--solid foil measurements to date. This tape drive provides robust targetry for the generation and study of high-repetition-rate ion beams using next-generation high-power laser systems, also enabling wider applications of laser-driven proton sources. Abstract

A machine learning model was created to predict the electron spectrum generated by a GeV-class laser wakefield accelerator. The model was constructed from variational convolutional neural networks, which mapped the results of secondary laser and plasma diagnostics to the generated electron spectrum. An ensemble of trained networks was used to predict the electron spectrum and to provide an estimation of the uncertainty of that prediction. Abstract

Since the first demonstration of chirped pulse amplification (CPA) in the mid-1980s, ultrashort pulse, high-peak-power lasers have been key to advancing research, often with societal importance. The next-generation facilities, such as Apollon, the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF) [3] and the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI), are based on 10s PW laser systems. These facilities will provide high-energy charged particle and photon beams that will be used as powerful time resolved research tools for the development of new technologies, such as novel cancer therapy, and probing dense matter for border security and the nuclear industry. A significant challenge in the design and operation of high-power laser facilities is the robustness of their optical components, which have damage thresholds on the order of 1 J cm−2 , which makes them bulky and expensive. Damage to these sensitive components can lead to costly maintenance and downtime that can severely disrupt facility operation. Plasma is an optically active medium, with the potential to replace optical components of high power lasers. It has a damage threshold several orders of magnitude greater than any solid state device, and is readily replenishable at the laser repetition rate. Numerous plasma-based optical device schemes have been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. For example, Raman and Brillouin amplification can yield high gain in probing laser pulses. Plasma mirrors are commonly used to increase the temporal contrast of intense laser pulses used for studying laser-solid interactions. Plasma waveguides are routinely used to guide high-power laser pulses and solid density plasma has been used as a source of high-harmonics. Plasma holograms have been used to manipulate the mode structure of laser beams.

Abstract

We address the scattering of a high energy laser pulse on a large wavelength acoustic turbulence of relevance for Laser M'egajoule or National Ignition Facility-class experiments. Both kinetic and hydrodynamic frameworks are adopted and combined with a linearized description of the laser propagation. The resulting dispersion relations display important kinetic contributions to the growth of the forward Brillouin instability. Moreover, proof is made that the spatial incoherence often used in high energy laser facilities is, for cold enough plasmas or in the multi-ion species case, not enough to reach full control of the laser filamentation. Comparisons with experimental results and dedicated hydrodynamic simulations confirm our results. The derived dispersion relations present new tools for assessing the propagation quality and energy deposition region of high energy laser pulses. They also underline the importance of accounting for kinetic effects, even in the millimeter and nanosecond scale of many inertial confinement fusion or high-energy-density experiments.

Abstract

We report the results of the analyses of the cosmic ray data collected with a 4 tonne (3×1×1 m3) active mass (volume) Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) operated in a dual-phase mode. We present a detailed study of the TPC's response, its main detector parameters and performance. The results are important for the understanding and further developments of the dual-phase technology, thanks to the verification of key aspects, such as the extraction of electrons from liquid to gas and their amplification through the entire one square metre readout plain, gain stability, purity and charge sharing between readout views. Abstract

We report on the characterisation of an x-ray source, generated by a laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerator. The spectrum of the optimised source was consistent with an on-axis synchrotron spectrum with a critical energy of keV and the number of photons per pulse generated above 1 keV was calculated to be. The x-ray beam was used to image a resolution grid placed 37 cm from the source, which gave a measured spatial resolution of 4 µm × 5 µm. The inferred emission region had a radius and length of 0.5 ± 0.2 µm and 3.2 ± 0.9 mm respectively. It was also observed that laser damage to the exit aperture of the gas cell led to a reduction in the accelerated electron beam charge and a corresponding reduction in x-ray flux due to the change in the plasma density profile. Applied physics letters 112(24), 244101 (2018). doi:10.1063/1.5027297, We describe how active feedback routines can be applied at limited repetition rate (5 Hz) to optimize high-power >10 TW) laser interactions with clustered gases. Optimization of x-ray production from an argon cluster jet, using a genetic algorithm, approximately doubled the measured energy through temporal modification of the 150 mJ driving laser pulse. This approach achieved an increased radiation yield through exploration of a multi-dimensional parameter space, without requiring detailed a priori knowledge of the complex cluster dynamics. The optimized laser pulses exhibited a slow rising edge to the intensity profile, which enhanced the laser energy coupling into the cluster medium, compared to the optimally compressed FWHM pulse (40 fs).
