The FIELDS instrumentation suite on the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission provides comprehensive measurements of the full vector magnetic and electric fields in the reconnection regions investigated by MMS, including the dayside magnetopause and the night-side magnetotail acceleration regions out to 25 Re. Six sensors on each of the four MMS spacecraft provide overlapping measurements of these fields with sensitive cross-calibrations both before and after launch. The FIELDS magnetic sensors consist of redundant flux-gate magnetometers (AFG and DFG) over the frequency range from DC to 64 Hz, a search coil magnetometer (SCM) providing AC measurements over the full whistler mode spectrum expected to be seen on MMS, and an Electron Drift Instrument (EDI) that calibrates offsets for the magnetometers. The FIELDS three-axis electric field measurements are provided by two sets of biased double-probe sensors (SDP and ADP) operating in a highly symmetric spacecraft environment to reduce significantly electrostatic errors. These sensors are complemented with the EDI electric measurements that are free from all local spacecraft perturbations. Cross-calibrated vector electric field measurements are thus produced from DC to 100 kHz, well beyond the upper hybrid resonance whose frequency provides an accurate determination of the local electron density. Due to its very large geometric factor, EDI also provides very high time resolution (∼1 ms) ambient electron flux measurements at a few selected energies near 1 keV. This paper provides an overview of the FIELDS suite, its science objectives and measurement requirements, and its performance as verified in calibration and cross-calibration procedures that result in anticipated errors less than 0.1 nT in B and 0.5 mV/m in E. Summaries of data products that result from FIELDS are also described, as well as algorithms for cross-calibration. Details of the design and performance characteristics of AFG/DFG, SCM, ADP, SDP, and EDI are provided in five companion papers.

The Geoelectrodynamics and Electro-Optical Detection of Electron and SuprathermalIon Currents (GEODESIC) sounding rocket encountered more than 100 filamentary densitycavities associated with enhanced plasma waves at ELF (3 kHz) and VLF (310 kHz)frequencies and at altitudes of 800990 km during an auroral substorm. These cavities weresimilar in size (20 m diameter in most cases) to so-called lower-hybrid cavities (LHCs)observed by previous sounding rockets and satellites; however, in contrast, many of theGEODESIC cavities exhibited up to tenfold enhancements in magnetic wave powerthroughout the VLF band. GEODESIC also observed enhancements of ELF and VLFelectric fields both parallel and perpendicular to the geomagnetic field B0 within cavities,though the VLF E field increases were often not as large proportionally as seen in themagnetic fields. This behavior is opposite to that predicted by previously published theoriesof LHCs based on passive scattering of externally incident auroral hiss. We argue thatthe GEODESIC cavities are active wave generation sites capable of radiating VLF wavesinto the surrounding plasma and producing VLF saucers, with energy supplied by cold,upward flowing electron beams composing the auroral return current. This interpretation issupported by the observation that the most intense waves, both inside and outside cavities,occurred in regions where energetic electron precipitation was largely inhibited orabsent altogether. We suggest that the wave-enhanced cavities encountered by GEODESICwere qualitatively different from those observed by earlier spacecraft because of thefortuitous timing of the GEODESIC launch, which placed the payload at apogee within asubstorm-related return current during its most intense phase, lasting only a few minutes.

The Auroral Current and Electrodynamics Structure (ACES) mission consisted of two sounding rockets launched nearly simultaneously from Poker Flat Research Range, AK on January 29, 2009 into a dynamic multiple-arc aurora. The ACES rocket mission was designed to observe electrodynamic and plasma parameters above and within the current closure region of the auroral ionosphere. Two well instrumented payloads were flown along very similar magnetic field footprints, at different altitudes, with small temporal separation between both payloads. The higher altitude payload (apogee 360 km), obtained in-situ measurements of electrodynamic and plasma parameters above the current closure region to determine the input signature. The low altitude payload (apogee 130 km), made similar observations within the current closure region. Results are presented comparing observations of the electric fields, magnetic components, and the differential electron energy flux at magnetic footpoints common to both payloads. In situ data is compared to the ground based all-sky imager data, which presents the evolution of the auroral event as the payloads traversed through magnetically similar regions. Current measurements derived from the magnetometers on the high altitude payload observed upward and downward field-aligned currents. The effect of collisions with the neutral atmosphere is investigated to determine if it is a significant mechanism to explain discrepancies in the low energy electron flux. The high altitude payload also observed time-dispersed arrivals in the electron flux and perturbations in the electric and magnetic field components, which are indicative of Alfven waves.

In-situ observations of a moderately strong mid-latitude sporadic-E layer show a separation in altitude between distinct sublayers composed of Fe(+), Mg(+), and NO(+). From these observations it is possible to estimate the zonal wind field consistent with diffusive equilibrium near the altitude of the layer. The amplitude of the zonal wind necessary to sustain the layer against diffusive effects is less than 10 meters per second, and the vertical wavelength is less than 10 km.

The Dipper satellite will carry out an unprecedented, systematic, and focused in-situ exploration of the Earth's lower ionosphere and thermosphere below 200 km that will produce a pivotal base of knowledge that will significantly advance our understanding of knowledge that will significantly advance our understanding of how our near-space environment works. The satellite will carry comprehensive in-situ probes to measure vector electric and magnetic fields, plasma density and temperature, ion velocities, ion and neutral composition and winds, energetic particles including suprathermal electrons, gravity waves, and lightning bursts. The satellite will include a propulsion system and tapered body that will provide over 10,000 excursions to altitudes below 200 km with over 3000 dips to altitudes below 150 km. With this instrument complement, spacecraft, and orbit, the Dipper mission will gather the necessary combined electrodynamics and neutral dynamics measurements to provide an understanding of the Earth's critical boundary region where the ionized gases of space and the neutral gases of the atmosphere are coupled, and where impinging forces and momentum are deposited from the magnetosphere above and from the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere below. In exploring those physical processes in the lower ionosphere which can only be measured in-situ, the Dipper mission addresses four main science objectives. The Dipper will: 1) reveal how ion-neutral coupling creates a global system of dynamo electric fields and currents; 2) provide first-hand understanding of how magnetospheric currents close in the ionosphere and reveal the effects on the upper atmosphere of magnetospheric energy and momentum deposition; 3) discover the degree of upwards coupling and energy deposition due to thunderstorm electric fields and determine their significance; 4) determine the dynamics and composition of the Earth's lower thermosphere, including its response to gravity, tidal, and planetary waves on a range of spatial scales. A proposal to design, build, operate, and analyze data from instruments on the Dipper spacecraft within the schedule and budget constraints of NASA's MIDEX program was submitted to NASA in 1998. This presentation summarizes the main features of the mission.

Two Black Brant IX sounding rockets were launched into the dark, dayside cusp near magnetic noon on December 2 and 3, 1997, from Ny Alesund, Spitzbergen at 79degN reaching altitudes of approximately 450 km. Real-time ground-based and Wind (interplanetary magnetic field) IMF data were used to determine the launch conditions. The first launch, with Bz north conditions, crossed into and back out of an open field region with merging poleward of the projected trajectory. The second flight, into Bz south conditions, was timed to coincide with an enhancement in the merging rate from a increase in the negative Bz, while the (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) DMSP F13 satellite was situated slightly to the north of the rocket trajectory. Each payload returned DC electric and magnetic fields, plasma waves, energetic particles, photometer data, and thermal plasma data. Data from both flights will be shown, with an emphasis on the DC electric field results. In particular, the data gathered on December 2, 1997 will be used to discuss ionospheric signatures of merging and the open/closed character of the the cusp/low latitude boundary layer. In contrast, the data gathered on December 3, 1997 shows evidence of pulsed electric field structures which will be examined in the context of cusp plasma entry processes. Both data sets returned a rich variety of plasma waves, as well as optical emissions and thermal plasma data.

In order to investigate the complex electrodynamics and neutral-plasma coupling inherent to sporadic-E layers in the earth's mid-latitude ionosphere, a series of rocket/radar experiments were planned as part of the NASA El Coqui H Campaign from Tortuguero Launch Range, Puerto Rico, in March-April, 1998. The rocket experiments consisted of two pairs of "mother-daughter" payloads with limited apogees so that the payloads "hovered" in the sporadic-E region (95-125 km). Each payload pair included vector DC and AC electric field detectors, a highly accurate flux-gate DC magnetometer, an ion mass spectrometer, an ionization gauge, and spaced-electric field receivers to measure the wavelength and phase velocity of the unstable plasma waves. Separate rockets were included to simultaneously carry aloft TMA trails to measure the neutral wind and its velocity shear, believed responsible for the sporadic-E layer formation. In addition to the rocket experiments, incoherent scatter radar measurements of plasma density and drift velocity were gathered almost every night during the 3 week campaign. Continuous VHF backscatter radar operations were carried out from a site near Salinas, Puerto Rico, where 3-m backscatter echoes were observed associated with sporadic-E and other types of low altitude ionospheric layers. Other radars that operated during the campaign included an HF backscatter system near Ponce, Puerto Rico, and a second VHF backscatter radar set up near Aguadila Puerto Rico. On 24 March 1998, one of the instrumented rockets was launched, attaining an apogee of 129 km. The payloads successfully pierced an intense sporadic-E layer observed by both the Arecibo radar and the in-situ density and ion mass spectrometer probes. In-situ DC electric fields revealed very low (about 1-2 mV/m) ambient fields with small amplitude structures of the same order. No high frequency (short scale) waves were observed, consistent with the VHF backscatter observations at the time of the launch. An overview of the observations will be presented.
