he structure functions g1p and g1n have been measured over the range 0.014 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q2 < 40 GeV2 using deep-inelastic scattering of 48 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We find that the Q2 dependence of g1p (g1n) at fixed x is very similar to that of the spin-averaged structure function F1p (F1n). From a NLO QCD fit to all available data we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n =0.176 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.007$ at Q2=5 GeV2, in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction of 0.182 \pm 0.005.

New measurements are reported on the deuteron spin structure function g_1^d. These results were obtained from deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV electrons on polarized deuterons in the kinematic range 0.01 < x < 0.9 and 1 < Q^2 < 40 (GeV/c)^2. These are the first high dose electron scattering data obtained using lithium deuteride (6Li2H) as the target material. Extrapolations of the data were performed to obtain moments of g_1^d, including Gamma_1^d, and the net quark polarization Delta Sigma.

The inclusive A(e,e'') cross section for x similar or equal to 1 was measured on H-2, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q(2) from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)(2). The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit xi scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

The cross section for quasielastic C-12(e, e''p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q2 is observed.

15. Single spin asymmetry in open charm photoproduction and decay as a test of pQCD

We analyze the possibility of measuring the single spin asymmetry (SSA) in open charm production by linearly polarized photons in the planned E160/E161 experiments at SLAC using the inclusive spectra of secondary (decay) leptons. In leading order pQCD, the SSA in the azimuthal distribution of the charged decay lepton is predicted to be about
0.2 for SLAC kinematics. Our calculations show that the SSA in the decay lepton distribution is well defined in pQCD: it is stable both perturbatively and parametrically, and practically insensitive to theoretical uncertainties in the charm semileptonic decays. Nonperturbative contributions to the leptonic SSA due to the gluon transverse motion in the target, heavy quark fragmentation and Fermi motion of thec -quark inside theD -meson are predicted to be about10% . We conclude that measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry in the secondary lepton distribution would provide a good test of the applicability of pQCD to open charm production at energies of fixed target experiments. Our analysis of the SLAC experimental conditions shows that this SSA can be measured in E160/E161 with an accuracy of about ten percent. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published
