Abstract

The structure of ZrO2–Sc2O3 powders in the composition range from 1 to 15 mol.% of Sc2O3 with the addition of 0.1 mol.% Eu2O3 as a spectroscopic probe was studied. The powders were obtained by the coprecipitation method and subsequent heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1200°C. The crystal structure was identified through x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The local structure was evaluated based on the spectral and luminescent properties of the Eu3+ ion in the powder samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, we provide the first experimental evidence that colloidal hydrophilic magnetite nanoparticles can penetrate through bilayer lipid membrane in a non-uniform stationary magnetic field. Hydrophilic ligand-free cationic colloidal magnetite nanoparticles with an average diameter of 4 nm were added to the surrounding aqueous solution on one side of the azolectin membrane. An external non-uniform magnetic field ensured the attraction of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles to the membrane, resulting in the formation of a near-membrane charged layer of cationic nanoparticles resulting in the initial polarization of the membrane. As a result of the passage of magnetite nanoparticles through the membrane, the polarization of the membrane decreases, and the membrane becomes depolarized. Independent methods were used to detect magnetite nanoparticles that passed through the lipid membrane including transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The discovered effect may be due to the following factors and interactions of nanoparticles. Interaction of magnetic nanoparticles with external inhomogeneous magnetic field provides localization of nanoparticles on the membrane surface. Collective interactions between nanoparticles, as well as their interactions with external electric and magnetic fields, lead to the formation of magnetite nanoparticle aggregates. Interaction of nanoparticles with the membrane lipid matrix leads to the formation of organic–inorganic complexes in which the polar surface of nanoparticles is enveloped by a lipid layer. The penetration of nanoparticles through the membrane is caused by the interaction of organic–inorganic complexes of nanoparticles and their aggregates with local intramembrane and near-membrane electric and magnetic fields. Abstract

Sour ales, traditionally produced in Belgium, Britain, and Germany, have gained wide popularity in America, Europe, and Russia. The paper provides generalized and systematized scientific data related to the technological and biotechnological characteristics of raw materials used in sour ales. The study featured malt, grain products (wheat, corn, rice, barley, rye, and oats), hop, Lactobacillus lactic-acid bacteria, Saccharomyces cerevisiae brewer’s yeast, and Brettanomyces yeast. Sour ales are usually prepared from a combination of different malts, such as Pilsner, Vienna, and Munich. Pilsner is used for malt type, while Munich is mostly employed as a basisfor dark varieties of sour ales. The review presents some of the flavor characteristics of malt types, as well as their recommended content. Unmalted grain products have a significant impact on the technological process and the organoleptic characteristics of acid ales. Unmalted wheat is used for Belgian sour ales, such as Lambic, Fruit Lambic, and Gueuze, in the amount of 30–40%, while 50 % are used in the German variety of Berliner Weiss. In general, the degree of wort pitching for sour ales should not exceed 8-15 IBU, since hop acids kill lactic-acid bacteria. Common hop varieties with a low or medium content of α-acids were found optimal for sour ale production. For example, for Flanders Red Ale, producers most often use one of the best traditional European varieties, namely Saazer (Zatetsky).The following types of homo- and heterofermentative lactic-acid bacteria are recommended for ale production technology: Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus fermentum, and Lactobacillus plantarum. The aromatic characteristics of the wort fermented with lactic acid bacteria are described in the following terms: bread, yeast, honey, oil, cider, etc. Lactic acid bacteria are used in sour ales production, as well as Brettanomyces yeasts. Currently, brewing widely employstwo types of yeast: Brettanomyces bruxellensis and Brettanomyces anomalus. They give the drink a specific taste and aroma, due to hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) and esters (ethyl acetate, ethyl lactate, phenylacetate, etc.). The paper contains some practical recommendations on the use of specific types of raw materials to produce sour ales with a given sensory profile.

Abstract

Sour ales have become widely spread in Europe since XVII century. These drinks are still popular in Germany, Belgium, England and other European countries. Interest in sour ales has been growing steadily in Russia. The purpose of this work was to systematize and generalize scientific data and the results of practical use of lactic acid bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus in sour ales production technology and in the formation of the ready beverage flavor profile. The subjects of the research were biochemical and biotechnological properties of lactic acid bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus frequently used in sour ales production, namely, L. delbrueckii, L. brevis, L. buchneri, L. fermentum, L. plantarum. The results of studying sour ales composition by means of gas chromatography, solid phase microextraction, liquid chromatography, and mass spectroscopy show that they have complex compositions. Thus, sour ales of Lambic and Gueuze groups have 64 volatile compounds. Taste and aroma of sour ales are mostly formed by the most important components synthesized during lactic-acid fermentation. They are higher alcohols, complex esters, organic acids, dimethyl sulfide and diacetyl. Concentration of these components is mainly determined by the type of lactic acid bacteria. The article generalizes and systematizes scientific data concerning biochemical and biotechnological properties of different types of lactic acid bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus used for sour ale production. The article reveals concentrations of the main products and by-products synthesized by the given types of lactic acid bacteria during fermentation. The author points out corresponding taste and aroma sensations according to terminology used in European Brewing Convention (EBC).

Abstract

Dark matter lighter than 10 GeV/c2 encompasses a promising range of candidates. A conceptual design for a new detector, DarkSide-LowMass, is presented, based on the DarkSide-50 detector and progress toward DarkSide-20k, optimized for a low-threshold electron-counting measurement. Sensitivity to light dark matter is explored for various potential energy thresholds and background rates. These studies show that DarkSide-LowMass can achieve sensitivity to light dark matter down to the solar neutrino fog for GeV-scale masses and significant sensitivity down to 10 MeV/c2 considering the Migdal effect or interactions with electrons. Requirements for optimizing the detector’s sensitivity are explored, as are potential sensitivity gains from modeling and mitigating spurious electron backgrounds that may dominate the signal at the lowest energies. Abstract

The recent studies of electroluminescence (EL) properties in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches have revealed the presence of unusual delayed pulses in the EL signal in the form of two slow components with time constants of about 5 and 50 $\mu$s. These components were shown to be present in the charge signal itself, which clearly indicates that drifting electrons are temporarily trapped on two states of metastable negative argon ions which have never been observed before. In this work, using the pressure dependence of the ratio of slow component contributions measured in experiment, it is shown that these states are those of two types of metastable negative molecular ions, $\mathrm{Ar}_2^{*-}(b \ ^4\Sigma_u^-)$ and $\mathrm{Ar}_2^{*-}(a \ ^4\Sigma_g^+)$ for the higher and lower energy level respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Recent discovery of additional mechanism of electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases due to neutral bremsstrahlung (NBrS) effect led to a prediction that NBrS EL should be present in noble liquids as well. A rigorous theory of NBrS EL in noble liquids was developed accordingly in the framework of Cohen-Lekner and Atrazhev approach. In this work, we confirm this prediction: for the first time, visible-range EL has been observed in liquid Ar at electric fields reaching 90~kV/cm, using Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Thick GEM (THGEM) structures. Absolute light yields of the EL were measured and found to be in excellent agreement with the theory, provided that momentum-transfer cross section of electron-atom scattering (instead of energy-transfer one) is used for calculation of NBrS cross section., 6 pages, 4 figures
